How to Cleanse Your Room

Cleansing the room is an important ritual for me as an energy practitioner. During my years of meditating, working with other empaths and mediums, and connecting with reiki healing energy I have learned how it feels when a room needs cleansing.

Have you ever walked into a house and felt oddly subdued or depressed? Maybe it felt dark and dreary. Perhaps the space was cluttered with junk and you came away feeling jittery. These are all examples of space that needs cleansing. Sometimes it goes beyond the act of vacuuming and dusting furniture. You need to clean the energy, open up the space, and make it easier to breath and relax.

How to Cleanse Your Room

My easiest way to cleanse a room is using incense. I have incense sticks of various different scents, and I used them depending on my needs. For example, I will burn lavender incense to relax people and aid with meditation and self-care. I might burn sandalwood to help me feel more energized and connected to Spirit. I would burn a citrus incense to make the area feel physically clean and healthy. There are lots of different scents available, and you can buy incense cones or sticks. I like to burn a white sage smudge stick for what I call “deep cleansing.” I might do this once a week, or sometimes more frequently if we have been dealing with challenges at home. White sage is known for its healing and cleansing properties, and I have read in some medical journals that it has health benefits. Another favourite of mine is Palo Santo wood. These little sticks smell sweet and invigorating, and I feel that they help liven up the energy in a room if it feels stale.

Probably the most popular way of cleansing your room is using scented oils. A simple oil burner is great for this job. Add a few drops of essential oil to a small amount of water, pop a tealight candle underneath, and your room will soon feel and smell fresher than it did before, depending on the oil that you use. One of my fellow reiki students has been using frankincense oil and rosemary oil to help her husband recover from serious illness, and she highly recommends them. I decided to get some of these oils since I haven’t used them before. Do you use incense, smudge sticks and essential oils for cleansing? Please share your recommendations in the comments.

Settling a New Rescue Dog at Home

You may have seen my earlier blog posts about the struggle we faced when trying to re-home a dog late last year. Our beloved Staffy X rescue dog died peacefully last August having spent a wonderful eleven years in our care.

My husband and I vaguely remembered the early days with Baxter when he was about three years old. Although he was house-trained, he had clearly been badly mistreated, leaving us with a dog that had panic attacks if you mentioned the word “bath,” hyperventilated if the smoke alarm went off or he heard a similar high-pitched sound, and never could resist the urge to steal food and scavenge on the streets.

Back then it was just the three of us, with no young children or children’s toys to protect. We had time to work closely with Baxter and help him overcome his fears and settle in with his new family. Settling a new rescue dog is hard work! It feels very like having a baby, where you muddle through each day and learn on the job.

Settling a New Rescue Dog at Home

After several disappointing responses from rescue centres and re-homing charities, most of whom refuse to consider re-homing a Staffy dog breed with young children despite our experience, I found a charity that was very willing to consider our family for one of their dogs. Warrington Animal Welfare met us a few times when we visited a couple of dogs in their care. They listened to our story, they accepted that we wanted a Staffy crossbreed dog because Baxter left such a big impression on our lives, but they were not pushy when we took a little time to consider if we could give the dogs what they needed.

Eventually we found Marley, a two-year-old Pomeranian-Staffy X. Yes, I know, I thought it was a strange mix as well, but a breeder did this deliberately! Marley had not been mistreated. He had lived in an apartment with a young couple, and while he came to us slightly overweight and under-exercised, he was and is a very happy and friendly dog. He simply needs some training, lots of outdoor activity, and something to keep his brain busy. But he is hard work. He barks every time someone walks along the pavement past our house. He doesn’t travel well in the car. He has slipped out of his harness a few times, and he can jump over the fence and wall in our garden. He’s a Houdini dog!

He ate the children’s toys

Marley is also partial to the children’s toys, and has already eaten three or four dolls, several Lego pieces, and even a USB cable (thankfully not while it was plugged in). We are having to relearn life with a young dog and make our adjustments accordingly. This week I have someone making my garden Marley-proof. I am also contacting a local dog training facility for advice. Despite the extra expense and the stress, I love my new boy very much, he has settled in with our family very quickly, and he is adorable. Thank you, Warrington Animal Welfare for matching us with our new baby.

Reconnecting with the Spirit World

Did you see something? A shadow, over there, in the corner! As you look towards it the apparition vanishes, and you think your eyes are playing tricks on you.

Then you hear a strange sound, maybe laughter drifting down the stairs, but you are alone in the house. It could be the neighbours or someone walking past outside… or maybe it was a ghost!

Image of a dark, spooky room with a wooden chair in front of an old fireplace, ghostly shadows reflecting from a dimly lit electric light candelabra. Reconnecting with the Spirit World

That was my lived experience up until sometime in the past year or so. Growing up I always sensed something “other” around me, but I could never explain what it was. The adults I spoke to always said I had a vivid imagination, and it was probably all those books I read playing tricks with my mind. But I knew that I could feel something different.

I didn’t always see ghosts, but I knew when they were around me. I could list hundreds of small experiences across the years, but for now I want to talk about the experience of being a psychic sensitive. I am not a medium. I don’t see spirits and ghosts as physical beings like you see on TV. They speak to me silently, through music, odd sounds, and whispered words in my mind. They manifest as shadows and sensations, or an eerie cold patch in a warm place. They show themselves as an image in my mind. At least, they used to do that. Now my world is silent, and I feel lonely.

My spirit sense disappeared

I am not sure what happened to me in 2019. It wasn’t a brilliant year, but I wouldn’t call it a bad year, despite the death of our beloved family dog. People and animals grow old and eventually we know that we must say goodbye. I experienced loss of people and animals last year. It was only in December that I realised I had been living alone. My spirit sense had disappeared. Or maybe it lies dormant, like a muscle that has wasted away. I became so wrapped up in the mundanity of life and domestic chores that I forgot to speak to Spirit, and so they left me alone. Why would they hang around someone who ignores them?

There are lots of other sensitive people in the world that would welcome their company and their presence. Or perhaps they still wait in the shadows, knowing that I will search for them soon and they can return to me. There have been a few occasions recently where I felt a familiar shiver down my spine, and I knew I was not truly alone. I am here, my ethereal friends. And I would love to see you again, my beloved Baxter-Boy.

My Top 3 Professional Goals for 2020

I wanted to write something inspirational and motivational today. This is our first day back at school after the Christmas holidays, and for many people it is also the first day back at work.

My Top 3 Professional Goals for 2020

My Top 3 Professional Goals for 2020

I know a few people who are planning career changes in 2020, but for me there is a sense of, well, nothing, to be honest. I usually start a new year raring to go, with lots of plans for how to grow my blog, how to increase my subscriber numbers, and crucially, how to sell my novels. But none of it works. I simply do not have the time or the resources to make it happen. So then I get cross with myself and start searching for work from home jobs on my preferred jobs websites. Then I get frustrated because it takes me away from working on my freelance business, and the whole cycle turns inwards. This year I am breaking that pattern.

Here are my top 3 professional goals for 2020:

1, Be realistic. I have been trying to earn money from my published novels and freelance writing for the past eight years, and I still do not earn a regular liveable wage. It simply isn’t happening for me. I need to lower my expectations, accept that I am just an average human, and keep trying to learn and grown in the best way that I can. I do not have access to business training courses, and I cannot pay for a mentor to guide me through the process. I have no money for PR or advertising, so I cannot build my author brand quickly. I can only take each day as it comes.

2, Be flexible. I have been applying for “regular jobs” for most of my adult life. Back when I worked a full-time office job, I was applying for work within the media industry, desperately looking for that big break so I could move into broadcasting and TV. But it was not my career, nor was it meant to be. I am a creative writer. I love words. But now I am struggling to get into the very closed and unwelcoming literary industry. I’m just a boring white girl from an average family. I have no special back story that will propel me to literary fame, and nobody has heard of my self-published novels. So I will apply for part-time jobs in my local area and be open to suggestions about how to earn a decent wage while still caring for my family.

3, Be kind to myself. There is no point in me getting upset and frustrated every time I hit the proverbial brick wall. It is an old pattern of behaviour and I am ready to move on. There is clearly a reason why I am not selected or considered for the jobs I apply for, whether they are freelance writing jobs, or regular day jobs. I do not desperately need the money. I want it for a bit of financial independence, but I am in a strong marriage, and my husband has a good, reliable job. He works in waste management; he will always find work. The work that I do is important but largely unrecognised in modern society. I know how valuable I am. I know my worth. And I will not settle for second best. I would rather be “unemployed” than make myself ill trying to juggle a job I despise with childcare and all the other domestic commitments on my time.

What are your plans and professional goals for 2020? Have you instigated a big career change, or are you happy and settled with your lot? I wish you a healthy, happy and prosperous new decade!

Happy New Year!

We made it! Today we welcome in a brand-new year and a brand-new decade. The past ten years have been busy, as I got married, had two children, began my professional writing career, published several novels, suffered bereavements, and worked through the issues caused by my father-in-law’s life-changing cycling accident.

Then there are the still ongoing mental health challenges with my husband, which he managed to hide from me pretty much up until we got married, despite living together for a few years. I was oblivious to his struggles until I saw the change in his behaviour, but back then we were both working full time jobs and had separate social lives.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

The past ten years for me has been mostly about staying home with the children and trying to find a little independence. I admire women who manage to have children and still work their full-time jobs alongside it. I don’t know how they do it. I have been searching for work that I can fit around childcare, but mostly the wages don’t cover the costs of paid childminders, so I don’t see the point in applying for the jobs. And the jobs that I like the look of I am unsuccessful in receiving offers for because guess what, I don’t have relevant recent experience. Talk about catch-22. I would far prefer to remain self-employed and work to my own schedule, but realistically I need money. My savings account is not filling up very fast, I have no disposable income, and I am relying on my husband to pay for the household expenses and luxuries like holidays and a new car. And he refuses to take holidays, so guess what, we don’t go very far! That is something I want to change going forward.

I decided not to make any fixed New Year resolutions, because right now I don’t need that kind of pressure. I have decided to try something more manageable, like get back to reading properly. And finish writing the novel I have been working on for the past two years. But my most sensible and practical resolution needs to be finding a part-time job. My freelance work is too sporadic and unpredictable. I just need to find something that brings a regular, reliable income so I can take my children on holidays and save up for bigger projects. And I need to restart my pension account, which stopped when I left full-time employment. It might sound quite heavy and worrying, but I’m not concerned. For now I am happy to be here with my family, safe and healthy. Happy New Year, my friends!

A Painful End to a Traumatic Year

I joined the social network for A Chronic Voice earlier this year because I needed to find people who understand what life is like with chronic pain.

Today I have written a post using the December link-up prompts, to show my experience of living with a chronic pain disorder. Click here to find other blog posts from fellow chronic pain sufferers, or #spoonies as we call ourselves online.

A Painful End to a Traumatic Year

Travelling

This month I have travelled home to Stoke-on-Trent for very painful reasons. At the beginning of December, I drove to the city hospital to visit my Grandad, who was admitted just days before my uncle passed away in a hospice nearby. That journey was emotional. Just last week I drove home to attend my uncle’s funeral. I did not want to drive myself, but needs must, and I was alone. My eyes were surprisingly pain free that morning, only dry as usual, until I started crying. It was the light that blinded me that day. In the morning, the winter sun hurt. In the afternoon, at dusk, I drove home with a dirty windscreen (my washers had blown a fuse), blinded by the LED lights of oncoming vehicles, and barely able to see the road in front of me. It was a very difficult journey.

Bonding

In the midst of family grief, I made a more exciting journey to collect our new family dog at the beginning of December. Marley is a 2-year-old bundle of chaos. He is a Staffy-Pomeranian crossbreed, and he is just the little mischievous character that we have missed around the house these past three months or so. We will never forget our beloved Baxter, who died in August, but now we will take time over Christmas to bond with Marley, our new boy. He is already becoming my little shadow, and we have been making memories together as we get to know each other.

Warming

We will enjoy the warmth of our multi-fuel stove in the living room this Christmas. I made the executive decision in summer that we should do something with the gaping hole in our fireplace where the old back boiler used to be. I am very pleased with my choice, and so is my husband, despite his initial reluctance. The stove has warmed our family during recent frosty weather, and we will enjoy snuggling on the sofa together as we watch Christmas TV shows and eat junk food.

Coping

This is another Christmas where I find myself coping with grief, and our trauma is not yet over. My Grandad is very frail and while he is at home with my Nan (also frail), he is receiving daily care from a team of district nurses, local doctors and professional care workers to try and ease the pain of growing old. He knows he doesn’t have long left in this world, and so do we, his family. We do not know how this will affect our Nan. All we know is that we are grieving for our lost uncle, brother and son, and we wait to see what happens with our elderly family members. We grieve together, as a family. We are strong.

Ending

And so, we approach the end of the year. 2019 has been a year for big changes in my family, and of loss. In Spring my youngest daughter grieved for the loss of a school friend who died of complications from a rare chromosome disorder. The little girl was only 4 years old, in the Reception class at school, and she will always be remembered by her siblings and her friends. Then my husband lost his job, although the redundancy had been a long time coming. At around the same time, his beloved car finally gave up and went to the scrap yard. My husband moved almost effortlessly into a much better job that came with a company car, but that brought with it a return to his old ways of anxiety and OCD. Our family dog died in August, and now my uncle in December. I hope that 2020 brings change for the better, and a fresh, happy start for our family. Merry Christmas, fellow Spoonies.

A Not so Blessed Yule

It is the season of Yule, a time of year when I am usually happy and excited for Christmas with my children. Unfortunately this Yule I am feeling emotional, angry and frustrated. This week we buried my uncle, who died at the age of 63 following a battle with cancer. I am blessed to be in a large and loving family, and it was great to spend time with my aunts, my uncle and my cousins again.

We celebrated the life of our uncle, brother and son, and we were thankful to be together. We are left to worry about the ill health of our grandparents, who outlived their son and are struggling every day. I know it is nature and they cannot live forever, but the little girl in me cannot face the changes that are to come. I am nostalgic for the good old days, and those childhood family Christmases full of chaos and joy.

A Not so Blessed Yule

Which brings me closer to home. Yule is a festival of change. We are celebrating the end of dark days and welcoming back the light as winter begins the descent. I have learned some big lessons about people and human nature during the past few weeks, and they leave a bitter taste in my mouth. Not everyone has the same attitude towards family that I do, and some that are closer to me have put a wedge between us that I feel will not be easily removed.

I feel that I need to move away from something that I have been clinging desperately to. I have to let go for my own sanity. But I don’t know how. For now all I can do is rest during the school Christmas holidays, and be cheerful for my daughters. They deserve a happy Christmas, and I will give it to them. Yule Blessings, my friends. May we all find our way through the dark days and welcome back the light.

Solid Wood Flooring makes a Pet Friendly Home

You might remember that I am currently in the process of modernising our home. Our last big job was the installation of a multi-fuel stove and solid oak beam mantel shelf in the living room.

We now have half-stripped walls, since I started my redecorating full of vigour, and quickly ran out of steam (literally, I broke the steamer 3 times!).

#MummyMonday Solid Wood Flooring makes a Pet Friendly Home by Catherine Green of SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
#MummyMonday Solid Wood Flooring makes a Pet Friendly Home

Solid Wood Flooring makes a Pet Friendly Home

One bugbear for me right now is the grotty old carpet in our living room. It is dated and worn thin, decorated in a lovely brown and orange floral pattern that I believe is what you might call an acquired taste. I hated it when we moved in about eighteen months ago, and now it is sort of growing on me, but what I really want is to reveal the solid wood flooring that lies beneath this late twentieth century monstrosity. I have discovered that we have original parquet flooring underneath the old carpet, and I want it on display, but my husband is refusing. He says it will make the room cold. We have a brand-new log-burning stove and brand-new central heating system, these rooms are not going to be cold!

My concern is that the parquet flooring appears to be cracked in places. I cannot fully investigate until we remove the carpet, which I plan to do early next year, but the floor makes odd sounds when you step in certain areas. I wonder if the parquet tiles have simply come loose and can be re-glued, or if we will have to replace sections of the floor. I would love to have wood flooring rather than carpet because I like the effect. It makes the room look cosy, you can put rugs down and change them when you want to, and it is easy to clean when the dog runs in from the garden with muddy paws.

Make it dog-friendly

Ah yes, the dog! Because our carpet is such a dark, murky colour, we cannot see when he leaves toys lying around, especially his rawhide bone. We regularly trip over the bone, step on soggy remnants, and let’s not mention the occasional toilet accident. He is still settling in, after all. Wood flooring is so much easier to keep clean when you have a pet. You can sweep over it to collect pet hair, you can easily mop it and leave it smelling fresh, and you won’t have to untangle clumps of hair and bits of chew toys from the carpet fibres.

Yes, I would far rather have my sold wood flooring on display and remove my grotty, old carpet. Let’s see how we get on in the New Year, shall we? How about you? Do you have plans for home improvements in 2020, or do you already have solid wood flooring and want to tell me how great it is? Let’s compare notes.

Keep Calm and Wrap Christmas Gifts

I am starting to panic now. My children finish school in just three days, and I haven’t even written all my Christmas cards, or wrapped all my gifts.

Usually I like to be organised and have everything finished before they break up for the Christmas holiday, but time has run away with me, and I’ve been busy with other demands. Christmas is such an emotional drain on mothers!

Keep Calm and Wrap Christmas Gifts with SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Keep Calm and Wrap Christmas Gifts

Keep Calm and Wrap Christmas Gifts

My husband is happily spending 12+ hours per day at work, expecting Christmas to happen as if by magic. Meanwhile I am frantically ordering gifts, trying to be at home for parcel deliveries, trying to settle the new dog in, trying to be present for our daughters’ various festive events, and trying to do all those little things that make Christmas special. And I have a family funeral to attend next week, so you can understand why I am feeling a little overwhelmed. December has been a very strange month so far, and try as I might, I cannot muster the Christmas spirit. But I will, because my children need me to.

I am relieved to have the convenience of online shopping for my family’s gifts. I shopped locally for my parents, my in-laws and my sister. My brother requested a shirt from a company called Father Sons that I had never heard of before. Their website looks pretty good, actually, and the order process was efficient. I might go back to them for birthday presents next year. I combined my daughters’ Christmas shopping with a mixture of online and local second-hand shops.

We don’t need extravagant gifts

My family has agreed that we don’t need extravagant gifts for Christmas, and I have kept within a tight budget. Despite this, I have amassed quite a collection of presents. Now I just need to find time to wrap all these gifts! As for the Christmas cards, I have started writing them, and I will distribute them during the next week or so. When you look at the bigger picture, you see that Christmas really isn’t so stressful as we like to believe.

Ultimately, all we need is to spend quality time with family and friends that we are unable to see quite so often due to work and life commitments. Of course, if you find it stressful to be around certain family members or friends, then you should take time for yourself. Christmas should be a time to rest, relax, and refresh before the onslaught of a new year and new life adventures. Merry Christmas!
