Never Mind the Terrible Twos: Beware the Fearsome Fours!

I remember a long time ago, when I was pregnant with my first child, being warned by all of my parent friends about what was to come. ā€œEnjoy them while they are young,ā€ they would say, ā€œOnce they hit the terrible twos, you will know about it!ā€ I nodded and smiled, and made sympathetic noises, but I never really believed any of those horror stories.

My baby was going to be a little angel, the darling model child that would charm everybody. And she was. She did everything she was supposed to, at exactly the right times, and with only a few small niggles along the way. Even as a toddler, she was adorable. Most of the time.

Beware the Fearsome Fours!

Now, I am well and truly eating humble pie, and boy am I sorry for being such a smug so-and-so around my friends whose children were, shall we say, rather difficult to handle as toddlers! My daughter is four now, and she is a little diva. I don’t know what happened. Her birthday was in January, so her behaviour has taken a while to change. But now she shouts, she stamps her feet, she slams doors, and she even smacks me in sheer frustration and anger when she gets really worked up. I have seen her push her baby sister over, drag her away from toys, snatch things away from her, and as for our dog, well, he can do nothing right when she is in one of her moods.

I think it must be related to her growing up. We are talking about going to ā€˜big’ school in September, and only last week did we discover who her new teachers will be, when her dad and I visited the school for our very first parents’ evening (that’s a topic for another post). She is aware that her routine is about to change quite dramatically, and naturally she is a little anxious about it. She is also exerting her independence, and quite frankly, a lot of the time she just does it for attention. The shouting and stamping helps her to release whatever is bothering her emotionally, and afterwards we have kisses and cuddles, and I have my darling child back for a while. Until the process begins again, usually at mealtimes.

The Terrible Twos is not a thing!

Oh, and the terrible twos? That does happen. It is happening right now, with my younger daughter. Just last week I had to deal with a double meltdown (tantrums, tears and screaming), when we walked through the front door after a day at preschool and dance class. The four year-old was clowning around, fell over and banged her knees hard on the metal door strip as I opened the door. The dog ran away when I unclipped his lead, and he took himself for a walk up the road. Our toddler tried to follow him out of the door, and she screamed when I picked her up and said no. Cue twenty minutes of chaos while I tried to decide which child to comfort first, and whether I should go and retrieve the dog. He came back soon enough. We all calmed down. Life goes on…

#WearItWild for 5 Years of Marriage!

Today is my 5th wedding anniversary. Happy Anniversary, Daniel! We have had a rather difficult transition during recent years, but I think I can safely say we are over the worst of it (for now).

A lesson I have had to accept is that there is no such thing as the perfect marriage. And there is definitely no such thing as the perfect relationship. Why should there be? If it was, we would just get bored. My husband is a very smart, very caring, and often very frustrating man. He has an obsessive personality, which at the moment is fully focused on his career in environmental waste management. He is on a mission to save the world, single-handedly it would seem!

#WearItWild for 5 Years of Marriage!

Which ties in nicely to another exciting event today, #WearItWild. Have you heard about it? The huge animal charity, WWF, decided to stage a massive event whereby they invite anyone and everyone to dress up as a wild animal in the name of conservation. When I received the email invitation, and I saw that it fell on my wedding anniversary, I got very excited. I mean, my wardrobe already consists of rather a lot of leopard print stuff, so a costume was very easy to create. My daughters even got onboard with the idea, and both are sporting their favourite flamingo-themed clothes today. I look forward to seeing everybody’s photos on the social networks later, to see what wild and wonderful creations came about…

And do you know where I got married? At Chester Zoo! Yes, I know, what a cool venue! It all came about because my husband and I wanted a place that reflected our interests and personalities. As I mentioned before, he is dedicating his career to saving the planet through effective waste management systems. I simply love animals. And Chester Zoo is one of our favourite places to visit. It was a fabulous setting for our wedding, and I still feel the butterflies in my tummy whenever I remember that wonderfully exciting day, when I committed my life to the man that I love. For better, and for worse. I love you, Daniel Green.

Tough Love with a Toddler

What I am about to share may well attract mixed responses from readers. The title says it all, really. Some of you may be aware of the struggle I have had with my second child, who is almost 2 years old.

She is the complete opposite of her older sister in terms of behaviour, and she has not slept properly since before she was born, up until about two weeks ago. The reason for her sudden change in sleeping behaviour seems to be my ā€˜tough love’ approach.

Having fun on holiday

Tough Love with a Toddler

I had tried everything. I breastfeed my daughter, and somehow she had grown accustomed to feeding twice at night, usually between 11pm and 12am, and then again between 3am and 4am. She refused to be settled with cuddles, a bottle of milk, a cup of water, or a dummy. Her dad wasn’t good enough. If he tried to comfort her, she screamed and fought until he brought her to me in desperation. I made sure she had a full tummy before bed, she was warm and comfortable, and everything else that I could think of. I tried various suggestions from health advisors and fellow mothers. Nothing worked. Both me and my daughter were exhausted, and grumpy.

It all reached breaking point. I was frustrated, angry, and fed up. By this time I was sleeping for around four hours at night, and that was broken sleep. I would lie awake in bed, because I knew that my daughter would wake soon and need feeding. She shares a bedroom with her older sister, and I think that because I was always so anxious not to wake the sleeping child with the crying from the younger one, perhaps I reinforced this bad habit from an early age. The toddler knew that I would hurry in to appease her, so that we didn’t wake her sister.

She knew what she was doing

One night, she woke as predicted for the second time. As I approached her bedroom door, she stopped crying. When I opened the door, she was sitting in her cot, she looked at me, and she giggled. There was no distress. She was not hungry. She was using me as a human dummy. That was the final straw. From then on, I vowed to treat her with tough love. I would not give in to her false cries. I would teach her to sleep all through the night. I had to, for my own sanity. The first two nights were stressful. She cried and screamed for almost half an hour while I sat on the edge of my bed in the dark, fighting the urge to run to her. In the morning, she was cheerful and happy. And on the third night, she slept all the way through. Amazing! This has carried on for the past two weeks, with only a couple of incidents where she woke up and I had to attend to her.

I know that many parents, and parenting experts, are against the idea of using ā€˜tough love.’ Believe me, it was not an easy decision to make, and certainly not easy to implement. But I stand by my actions as the best solution in this particular instance. We have to do what works for our family. My family need a mother that is rested, so that her patience returns and she can still do all of the daily chores that are required. My toddler needs her sleep, so that she can grow and develop into a healthy child. Here marks the end (I hope), of a very traumatic two years.

ā€œPut Your Children into Nursery and Go Out to Work!ā€ Says the Prime Minister

All of this talk about the general election, and everything that I am seeing in the culture of UK politics at the moment, is giving me a lot to think about.

I never really got involved with politics before I became a mother. In fact, I didn’t really think about a lot of important stuff, because it never seemed relevant. I was too busy working full time, and sleeping or spending time with my family at weekends.

My job became all-consuming, and resulted in me developing stress and anxiety, and almost having a nervous breakdown. But I’m not talking about that today.

UK Work Ethic

I am feeling increasingly agitated about the work ethic in our country. And I am only just beginning to realise the level of inequality there is in our society. When I was younger, I was led to believe that we should allow the ā€˜men in suits’ to run our country and tell us what to do. We should never question the elite authority, because we knew nothing about what they did. Well, we still don’t know much about what they do, but now I realise that the collective ā€˜they’ should be held to account. Yes, David Cameron, I am talking about you and your cronies!

So, back to my issue. I am currently unable to earn a wage. I am attempting to work from home as a writer, but silly me, I chose a career that doesn’t pay, at least when you come from a working class background and have no connection to London. I chose to give up full time office work, and I took on a part-time retail job in order to spend some time developing my career as a freelance writer. I have plenty of experience. Now, I cannot find a job that will actually pay. You know, like real money? That stuff that apparently makes the world go round? Yes, that.

I shouldn’t have fallen in love

You see, I also made the mistake of falling in love and getting married. And that resulted in my getting pregnant and having two children. Yes, I know, silly me. How could I possibly think procreating was a good idea? Anyway, it happened, and we decided that my husband should be the breadwinner because he works in a highly skilled sector (environmental waste management), and he can earn a decent wage to support the family. If I were to apply for a job elsewhere, my options are limited to low level office work or shop floor retail. Minimum wage.

But my problem is further exacerbated by several factors. First of all, I am actually reasonably well educated. I graduated with a 2.1 BA Hons Degree. I am a competent, literate, intelligent writer. But the jobs are not forthcoming. At least not those that I could physically attend. My husband and I could not afford to put our children into full-time childcare so that I can go out to work. We do not have any spare cash. And we could also not afford a second car, which would be another requirement based on our home town and its lack of available jobs within easy reach.

I don’t want to put my children in Nursery

But there is one more factor. I actually do not want to put my children into full-time day care. I want to spend time with them. Why can we not set up our working lives to incorporate families with young children? Surely, in the 21st century, we can be more flexible? I mean, we do have this fantastic thing called the internet, don’t we? Come on, politicians, get with the program. Let us set up the UK to be a global business player, using the best of modern technology and allowing our hidden talent to shine through. We are waiting. Will you answer the call?

“Poldark with Fangs!” How one Book Review means the World to an Indie Author

Check out my book review where an unknown reader compared my LGBT fantasy novel to the famous fictional Cornish character Poldark (well, the series is set in Cornwall).

Read my blog post to see how just one book review can make a world of difference to an indie author.

How one Book Review means the World to an Indie Author

I am so excited! And it took just one new review for my debut novel, Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel), to set me off. We writers are a sensitive breed. We thrive on compliments, much like the rest of the world, I suppose, but for me this has been the boost I needed after more ups and downs in the world of writing and marketing.

My latest 5 star review comes from a reader who took my novel on holiday. And now she wants more. Hooray! She called the story, “Poldark with Fangs,” which I think is absolutely brilliant, and why didn’t I think of that? I mean, I watched Poldark because of Aidan Turner, because I first discovered him as the vampire John Mitchell in Being Human that was shown on BBC3, and I fell head over heels in lust for the boy. I even pictured him as a candidate for Detective Jack Mason in an upcoming television series or film franchise…

Thrive on dreams and possibilities

Hey, we thrive on dreams and possibilities! Anyway, I just wanted to share my excitement, and my dreams, and I hope that if you haven’t picked up the Redcliffe novels yet, then it will encourage you to do so. Put it this way: if you love Aidan Turner, if you loved him in Poldark, if you love sexy, smouldering alpha males with strong female characters in a picturesque Cornwall location, you will not be disappointed. Thank you!

Are You a Tactical Voter? Or is it Time to Change?

I must admit I am a little excited about the General Election in the UK this year. Politics has always been something of a mystery to me. When I was younger I didn’t understand it at all.

Why Should I Vote?

My parents told me I should vote because it is important, and I always have done, but try as I might, none of it seemed to make much sense. I think perhaps I never really considered the importance of policies and practices. I mean, I drifted from high school into college, all paid for, and then I went to university, blithely ignoring the huge debt I had accepted in order to continue my education. I thought that everything would be fine and I would walk into a well-paid job once I was a graduate.

Well, I was completely wrong, and very naĆÆve. I know that now. Since graduating I have taken a lot more notice of politics, I have tried to learn more about what each party is offering, and my voting has reflected that. Up until this point I have been what is known as a tactical voter. In the UK we are ruled by two major parties: Labour and the Conservatives. None of the others ever really had a look in when it comes to running the country and taking important seats in parliament. So, back in 2010, I used my vote tactically, and I am sorry to say that yes, I did vote Conservative, because I honestly thought they could make an improvement in my life. They didn’t.

Now I have made a decision. I will not be voting tactically in the 2015 general election. From what I see in the media, voting and politics is finally becoming something that is relevant to our younger generation. Students in particular are speaking out, learning about politics, and making their own decisions about their lives. That didn’t happen when I left school. We were the lost generation, if you like. We didn’t take an interest, and we were not really encouraged to do so. Government was run by posh men in suits, down in the faraway capital city, and had no real relevance in our lives. Or so we thought.

The Green Party Sounds Good

At the moment I am leaning towards voting for the Green Party. I always liked their ideas, but I thought they were too small a party to really make a difference in parliament. However, since the emergence of UKIP, and of course the coalition government, the game has opened up dramatically. I believe that more people are considering politics than ever before, and these people are prepared to make a real change in their lives and those of their peers. Will you be voting in the general election? Please, do share your insight. We need to discuss politics, civilly and honestly, so that we can all broaden our horizons and make the right decisions for ourselves.

Happy Easter!

Hello my friends, and Happy Easter to you all! Today has been busy but fun, with two Easter egg hunts, tonnes of chocolate, and two very tired and happy little girls. We are having sleepovers with Grandma, family fun time at a local pub, and then off to the seaside for a few days with friends.

I am really ready for a holiday now. I am also a bit poorly, with swollen glands and a painful sore throat, slightly infected, but that is slowly healing. I’m sure chocolate will be the cure…

Welcome, Ostara! Pagan Fertility Festival with Catherine Green of SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.

Happy Easter!

You will notice my absence over here during the month of April. That is because I am focusing attention on my author blog, as I participate in the #AtoZChallenge. Pop over and take a look if you want to read about the paranormal aspects of my Redcliffe novels, with snippets about my ghost hunting past, and what led me into my writing career. I trust that your Bank Holiday weekend is just as fun and filled with love as mine is. Blessed Be!

A Preview of the #AtoZChallenge

The clock is ticking. The #AtoZChallenge 2015 is imminent. I am frantically researching my subjects, writing my blog posts, and collecting suitable images. I feel a bit flustered with it this year, because I seem to have lost a month somewhere.

I mean, one minute I was congratulating myself that I could finish off my first draft of Eye of the Tiger (Redcliffe book 4) before I write my A-Z blog posts, and then all of a sudden, here we are. It starts THIS WEEK! How did that happen???

A Preview of the #AtoZChallenge

Anyway, I have decided to write my blog posts on the theme of paranormal aspects in my novels. For the first day, on 1st April, I will allocate the letter A to Alpha werewolves. I chose this because for some strange reason, and even though I have always been a vampire lover, the Redcliffe werewolf pack have become very strong, and very forceful, characters in my Redcliffe novels series. And indeed, Eye of the Tiger (A Redcliffe Novel) promises to be the most exciting adventure with the alpha wolves yet… it is dangerous, exhilarating, violent and passionate. Got your attention yet? Excellent! Make sure you follow my author blog so you can see what I have to share on the subject of the paranormal…

If you are interested in seeing other participants for the #AtoZChallenge, check them out on the official website. We have everything from book stuff, to cooking, to photography, to travel, and everything in-between. Happy April!
