My Fire Vision Quest Continues in Quiet Contemplation

As the night wore on I found myself sitting cross-legged staring down the hillside, feeling the chill creep in to my body. I was wrapped in my big purple furry blanket, with a poncho and an insulated waterproof jacket, thick jeans and walking boots. I began to feel restless and bored. I wanted to get up and walk about, but I was confined to my sacred space of 6 feet square until dawn. I was determined to finish my vision quest.

I focused again on the oak tree and the plants around me, conversing silently with each of them. Their voices returned, as they told me about their place in the world. I was struck by the importance of simply ‘being’ as opposed to ‘doing’ all the time. We humans have become arrogant, self-centred creatures. We create these games in which we must always strive to better ourselves in some way. But that’s all they are; games. Ultimately, we return to the land from where we came, and we continue the cycle of life.

I conversed with the Mother oak tree at my side, and the tall, proud thistle standing in front of me. I spoke to the animals that were hidden in the undergrowth. We were all connected, and I could feel the energy like a shimmering web of silver threads, joining each and every one of us in an elaborate family tree. The plants and animals reaffirmed my place among them, and my feeling of peace and contentment grew stronger.

There was a spirit person beside me

I became aware of a spirit person sitting beside me. I felt a comforting hand on my left shoulder, as I sat with my knees drawn up under my chin and my arms clasped around them. I knew the spirit person was a man but I didn’t turn my head to see. He was my guardian, my great-grandfather. I will know more about him when I am ready to search.

Earlier in the evening I had been aware of my animal guides joining me in my sacred space. There are lots of dogs in my family, pets from our childhood who have returned as guides from spirit. My two closest ones are an Alsatian crossbreed called Lucky and a Yorkshire terrier called Toby. Lucky was my grandparents’ dog when my sister was a baby, and the two were inseparable as Emily grew up. Toby was our family dog, and he came to us as a puppy when I was thirteen. Subsequently he became my baby, and eventually lived with my husband and me shortly before he died.

Spirits and animal guides

Lucky arrived with Toby, left him with me and then trotted down the hillside to sit with Emily as she experienced her own vision quest. My horse spirit guides, Drummerboy and Star, lay quietly beside me, as did Bobby, my little blue-skinned Chupacabra spirit. He is a cute little creature, vaguely resembling a gargoyle, and he is always cheerful and playful. He makes me giggle with his antics. They stayed with me all night, as I sat for six long hours beneath the stars on a hillside in Derbyshire. It was beautiful, intense, exciting and peaceful all at the same time.

The Shaman Path: My Fire Vision Quest Experience Continues through the Night

I have finally experienced my first proper vision quest.

My Fire Vision Quest Experience

As my fire vision quest continued through the night, I learned a lot about my place in the land around me. Rather than feeling detached, unsettled and confused, I am now completely aware of why I am here and what I am here to do. All my life I have wandered aimlessly, trying to fit in to a society that for the most part I struggled to understand. At school I was ‘the geek,’ the awkward teenager, the unpopular one who was bullied and shy and completely lacking in confidence. As I grew older I became the quiet, polite young woman. But I was never satisfied. And now I am finally beginning to understand why.

Back to the dark hillside in rural Derbyshire. I had been listening to the steady beating of drums all around me. I had slept in the embrace of our Great Mother, and woke feeling happy and at peace. I spoke to the grand old oak tree under which I sat. I spoke to a tall, proud thistle that stood just in front of my sacred space. I was aware of small wild animals snuffling around behind me, but none approached. I was aware of my fellow spiritual travellers each sitting in their own sacred spaces up and down the hill, but I couldn’t see any of them.

I heard Native American flute

At some point in the night I heard the sound of a Native American flute being played. The sound drifted up the hill, and I thought it came from a point lower down around where my sister and spiritual brother were sitting. I knew that neither of them had their flutes with them, but I clearly heard the soft, melodic, peaceful sound. Later in the night I heard voices chanting, like a sacred choir. Turning my head towards the empty field to my right, I saw no shadows and was not aware of any human presence. I knew the chanting wasn’t coming from our fire below, because everyone was in silence all night. It seemed that a spiritual choir had joined us, and their sound was beautiful. I was not the only person who heard it that night.

I slept again, this time curled on my side with my nose buried in the grass. I inhaled the fresh, clean smell of earth, and revelled in the freedom to partake of this sacred ceremony. Normally I would be afraid of touching a snail or a slug, or having a spider crawl over me, but tonight none of that mattered. Another time I lay flat on my back staring up at the stars after the clouds broke up. I saw my first shooting star, which was a very exciting moment. I saw the constellations, a rare treat nowadays. I don’t know their names, or which ones I saw, but I intend to further study the night sky in all its glory. I felt the energy of the Moon, although I couldn’t see it because the branches of the oak tree obscured it. I slept again.

The Shaman Path: My Fire Vision Quest Continues

My Fire Vision Quest Continues

Continuing from my previous post, I woke from sleep after around half an hour or so. I couldn’t see my watch because it was dark, although it wasn’t as pitch black as I had anticipated. In fact, I have sat for hours in pitch-black rooms before now, on my ghost hunt investigations over the years. Therefore, at this time, sitting comfortably on a hillside in rural Derbyshire in the middle of a summer’s night, was very relaxing and peaceful.

Sitting up and looking around, I heard the steady beat of the drum echoing through the hillside, pounding its heartbeat into each one of us. I was aware of my friend the oak tree at my side, her huge leafy branches overhanging me, sheltering me from the rain. We had only a small shower, and the rain was neither heavy nor unpleasant. In fact, I found it quite refreshing. I was dressed in jeans, walking boots, a waterproof jacket, and with a couple of blankets for warmth. I sat on a plastic bin bag that acted as a groundsheet.

See the world differently

As I looked all around me, turning my head from left to right, and shifting round in my square, I saw things that I take for granted every day. There were the trees bordering the hill. To my right was a thick hedge that formed the boundary between the next field, and behind me was another hedge with a gate leading into another field beyond. I was essentially sitting in the top corner of the farmer’s field, at the top of the hill, looking down on the site where our facilitators sat around the bonfire. I heard the river below, and to my right I realised there was another stream bubbling noisily. I hadn’t seen it earlier in the day.

Listening to the beat of the drum, I became aware of another sound coming from the field to my right. I thought there were people in there beating their own drums in tune to the central rhythm. But I knew this wasn’t true. Our facilitators were all sitting around the fire, with only one or two people at a time wandering around the two hills checking on my fellow spiritual travellers and me. Nobody had any need to enter the adjacent field, and there were no dwellings or gathering places in the vicinity. But there was definitely somebody in the field beside me. I wasn’t frightened. They were simply joining us with sound, enjoying the drums.

What does the water say?

As I listened, my senses focused on the bubbling stream beside me. I became aware of three gnomes, emerging from their underground homes in the riverbank. They marched solemnly up beside the stream, each beating their own drum, and I was aware of them walking steadily down the hill, to sit beside the fire and enjoy our party. I realised that they are very serious creatures, but not at all unfriendly. They simply live their own quiet lives, hidden from humans, and they don’t interfere unless they feel it is necessary.

Looking across at the darkened hill opposite, my eyes settled on the hedges and trees that bordered the field. I saw the shadow of a giant race down the hill, his legs stretching wide as he leaped forward. He kept close to the hedge and was very skinny. In fact he reminded me of the BFG, from the popular children’s story by Roald Dahl. He made me smile, and I was surprised, because I never expected to see giants and gnomes on my vision quest! All the while the drum beat steadily, and I continued to watch my surroundings in the dark blue of night.

To be continued…

The Shaman Path: A Fire Vision Quest

I have finally experienced my first proper vision quest. Admittedly it is not something I ever planned to do. All I knew about vision quests was that they are a shaman ritual, and I had seen vague references to them in the Simpson’s movie. Yes, I was very culturally ignorant before my spiritual weekend in June!

I was excited to participate, and I expected to receive lots of powerful energetic revelations during solo meditations on a remote Derbyshire hillside. As it was, my experience was totally different, but very special.

A Fire Vision Quest

It was called a fire vision quest because we were celebrating a fire festival on the Celtic calendar. It was shortly after Beltane, during the height of summer, when the days were longer than the nights, and everyone should be joyful and happy. The sun is generally shining at this time of year, although in the UK it has been rather sporadic of late. Anyway, on this weekend the weather had been a little bit murky, we had intermittent rain showers, and we knew the night would be cold even though it was midsummer.

Our facilitators set up a large bonfire in the grounds of the place where our spiritual retreat took place. The buildings and driveway are flanked on two sides by huge hills on which live sheep and other small wild animals. We were instructed to choose a sacred space on one of the hills in which to experience our vision quest. I had initially planned to visit the opposite hill to where I ended up. During the afternoon we all hiked up the hills to choose our spots, and marked them out with small wooden stakes. I found a huge, old oak tree that I felt compelled to step close to. She invited me to sit beneath her branches and do my quest, and I gladly accepted.

Gather around the bonfire

As the sun began to set, we gathered around the bonfire and Barbara, our High Priestess, officially opened the vision quest ceremony. I won’t go into detail, because it is a sacred ritual. Suffice to say the spirits of Earth and Sky welcomed us, and we sent out our personal requests for our spiritual journey. After confirming that we were sufficiently prepared for a night beneath the stars, our watchers took us up to our personal sites on the hills. From sunset to sunrise we were alone with our thoughts, silent and contemplative. We were totally alone with Nature.

I stepped into my sacred space and sat down with my legs stretched out in front. I could see down the hillside and across the narrow valley to the other hill on which sat my fellow spiritual travellers in their own spaces. I couldn’t see the fire properly through the trees but I could hear it crackling and snapping. It was comforting; strong and safe. Every so often I would see embers flying up into the sky, and I marvelled at their beauty and power. Somebody near the fire began to beat a large pow-wow drum. It pounded a steady, rhythmic beat which rumbled through the hillside and seemed to roll up from the centre of the Earth to fill my body with power.

Are you sitting comfortably?

I settled myself comfortably on the grass, marvelling at the lightness of the night sky. I thought about beginning with some meditation, and prepared myself, breathing slowly and evenly to slow my body and open my mind. Instead I received a visit from our Great Mother. Her warm, loving presence surrounded me. I felt her arms around my shoulders and she gently laid me down in the grass, whispering that I should sleep now. I had been busy for too long, lost in the chaos of mundane life. Now I needed rest. A feeling of total peace swept over me. I was safe. I was comfortable. I slept.

A Spiritual Awakening in the Pyramids

Have you experienced a spiritual awakening? It might happen during deep meditation, on a shamanic retreat, or could even be invoked when listening to music that touches you internally.

Read my blog post to see how I experienced a spiritual awakening in the pyramids while sitting on British soil surrounded by a loving tribe of people.

A Spiritual Awakening in the Pyramids

I was walking steadily along a grassy pathway, towards a huge temple that stood proud and strong before me. Flanked by my elders, there was nowhere else to go but forward. I walked upright, with my head held high and my body proud. This was my journey. I was about to become a woman, truly and spiritually. I was carrying a silver chalice filled with fragrant white flowers. It took both hands to carry, and it was a sacred gift. I carried it with reverence and honour.

My feet were bare; my dress was a simple tunic of lightweight white fabric. My long, black hair hung straight down my back, fine and glossy with good health. It had been carefully washed and combed in preparation for my awakening. Walking steadily forward, not looking anywhere but at the temple before me, I was aware of our tribe elders standing silently either side, watching my progress. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. The air was thick with anticipation, and my mind was carefully blank of all expectation of what was to come.

Climbing the stone steps

I reached the temple and climbed the high stone steps without difficulty, still holding my sacred chalice of flowers. The stone was a pale colour, not quite yellow and not quite orange, but somewhere in between. It felt dusty underfoot, but that was the texture of the rock, and the hot sun above warmed it. I was handed a flaming torch by a silent watcher at the door to the temple, and I held it in one hand, struggling to hold the chalice in my right hand, careful not to spill the precious flowers. In the dim passageway that stretched ahead, I could see pale golden sand on the floor, and I felt the weight of solid, powerful rock all around me. My time had come to enter the inner chamber of the pyramid.

I walked slowly along the dark passageway, totally alone. I carried my torch and my chalice of flowers. I felt no fear. It was my time to be initiated into the ways of our people. I was ready. I was strong. I walked into a large, cavernous room in the very heart of the pyramid. This was the temple of the Goddess. On this night She would push me to the limits of endurance, and if I survived, I would be awakened. There was no other option. I will no longer return to Spirit and repeat my lessons.

Ornate golden throne

In the centre of the room was an ornate golden throne. I set down my chalice of flowers on the floor beside it. They were an offering to the Goddess. I placed my torch in a holder beside the throne, and I sat down. The torchlight only illuminated a small circle. Beyond that was total darkness.

Almost immediately the room filled with shadows. I fought my fear and panic as the Dark Energies surrounded me. They wanted me. They would control me. I would not allow that. Breathing through my fear, I broke them down. Concentrating on my own inner strength, I fought the Dark Energies, willing them to be gone from my life and my awareness forever. One by one they disappeared, and suddenly the room filled with golden light.

I had conquered my demons. I had reclaimed my power. The Goddess was proud. She came and danced with me in that Golden Chamber. We laughed, we sang, we moved in joy and love and happiness. I had taken another step forward on my journey to living a life awake and aware.

Ghost Hunter Diaries: A Spooky Ghost Hunt at Bodelwyddan Castle in Wales

On a recent radio show I talked about my experiences as a ghost hunter with North West Spirit Seekers. Here is one report of an extremely lively event, where our team contacted a whole castle full of ghosts.

Ghost Hunt at Bodelwyddan Castle, North Wales

Wow!  This was one epic and exciting ghost hunt!  The castle itself is beautifully kept and a fantastic museum and antique centre.  And they have a second-hand bookshop in the grounds, which is just fantastic for a bookworm like me.  I could feel the Spirit energy building as I drove to the venue and it felt excited as though the ghosts were ready to play…

On the walk round I felt dizzy in the hallway by the main staircase.  I knew that it was an active area but couldn’t connect with any of the energies to identify them.  The Library was a very masculine room, both in decor and the general atmosphere.  The Dining Room felt more welcoming and a bit more feminine-influenced.  In the bedroom I sensed a female spirit who was a very pretty and delicate lady and she was immensely proud of this room.  She wanted us to admire it because it was modern and stylish.

A Ghost in the Library

In the Library we spoke to Alfred, his brother Thomas, and a man who called himself Jeffries.  This was all done using the planchette.  Jeffries said he had murdered Thomas out of jealousy and he wasn’t remorseful.  In fact he seemed quite proud of his crime.  Jeffries was very strong and he moved the planchette across the table so it had two wheels hanging over the edge.  Then he moved it around the edge of the table but he lost it on the corner and it fell to the floor.  I had never experienced this kind of movement before and was very impressed!

In the Dining Room we set up the glass and spoke to Margaret, who was Alfred’s wife.  She seemed very gentle and pleasant and told us she had three children, Alex, Jonathon and Alison.  We were about to ask her some more questions when Alfred came in and took over the glass, advising us that he had sent his family away and we should speak to him!  He was very protective and I got the impression he was well loved and respected by his wife and children, and vice-versa.

After that we spoke to George, who came across as a portly, jovial 18th Century gentleman who enjoyed his brandy and the ladies!  His son Henry also came onto the glass but wouldn’t speak to the women in our group.  He only answered questions from a man.  Apparently George had a mistress and an illegitimate daughter and it destroyed the family.  As a result of this Henry blamed the mistress and subsequently mistrusted women.

We then spoke to Bernadette, the illegitimate daughter.  She said we could call her Bernie, and explained that she and her mother were banished from the Castle after the truth of George’s affair came out.  Bernie’s mother resented her for spoiling everything and she had an unhappy childhood as a result.  We felt really sorry for Bernie!  But then she said that she had been happily married and had children of her own.  We even sympathized with Henry after he told us the story and he gradually began answering questions from one of the women in our group.  After a while we felt the strong presences of all these Spirits surrounding us and it made us feel quite uncomfortable so we ended the vigil and went for a break.

Ghost Hunters EVP Experiment

In the rear hallway we sat on the floor to try some EVP and Pete, our medium, became overwhelmed by a drunkard gamekeeper called James!  This man affected a couple of women in our group by making them feel dizzy and one even smelt alcohol fumes.  Pete then said that James was having lewd thoughts about us!  He had been a hard worker and a hard drinker during his life but he seemed harmless enough.  At the end of the hallway was a sofa and I could see a man sat on it watching our group.  He wasn’t the gamekeeper; I think he was a Gentleman, but I could get nothing from him.  He was simply observing but didn’t want to interact.  I also saw a lady in the hallway stood near our table.  She was curious about us but wouldn’t come any closer because she was afraid of James and what he might do!  She was tall and slender, with brown hair worn in an up-do, and she was wearing a pale blue dress.

We moved into the Main Hallway and found the other group with a tipping-table.  Paul (Medium) had contacted five young children and 14 year-old Patricia.  We started singing Ring O Roses and the table actually moved in time to the nursery rhyme!  It was amazing!  Then someone suggested we try a different song and the children joined in with Row Your Boat.  I was so impressed and excited because I’ve never seen this before and it was such a fantastic experience!

Later on we were doing EVP in the bedroom and we heard the sound of one of the toys being played in the Toy Room upstairs.  Two people went to investigate and couldn’t explain how it had happened.  We all hovered on the landing for a bit but it was quiet and when we moved away we heard it again, it was eerie!

Ghosts in the Cellar

In the cellar we had been told there was a man who had been affecting people in the other group earlier that night.  He is apparently a very mischievous Spirit who had tormented many people over the years to the point where the Bodelwyddan staff refer to him as ‘Cellar Man’ and are used to his presence.  So we went in search of him.  He moved the glass a little bit and said his name was Matthew but we didn’t believe him.  Eventually we got bored and left him. There was a table in the cellar that was used by the popular TV show Most Haunted. The crew kindly left their autographs:

Finally we spoke to Mary using the glass in the Library.  Apparently she was George’s sister and they were cousins with Alfred and Thomas.  Mary was married to Timothy and her children were Anne, Emily, Laura and Giles.  She seemed very happy and was strong and talkative.  In fact it was dawn outside when we finished speaking to her!  Mary told us that George’s wife was Margaret and his mistress was called Lillian.  Mary and George had a sister called Caroline.  Mary also told us that the man in the cellar was called Harold.

Bodelwyddan is certainly a home with a rich history and a large family.  I think we could compile a whole biography from these Spirits if we were to return with a list of questions and a bigger notebook…

The Diamond Jubilee Thames Pageant: Bringing People Together

I have never considered myself much of a royalist. I mean, yes, I admire the British royal family and am always interested to hear what is happening that might be relevant to myself as a Briton. But I didn’t quite understand what all the fuss was about the Jubilee celebration.

It all seemed a bit far-fetched and an expense that we, the tax-payers could do without.

Bringing People Together

However, I found myself watching the Thames Pageant, where the river Thames has become the centre of activity for the first time in many years. This time, the Thames is the sight of celebration and joy. In previous years it was the hub of the Industrial Revolution, the World Wars, and many other battles and challenges that have occurred throughout British history. Today I am very happy to see so many people simply having fun.

As usual, the weather is pretty dismal. No, the weather is very dismal! In true British tradition, the Powers that Be have gifted us with several weeks of scorching heat and beautiful sunshine, only to bring out the rain clouds when we are given a long weekend of celebration. Typical! But that will not deter us. We Brits are a tough nation, especially when it comes to our weather.

Watch it on the telly

I am sitting at home, dry and warm, watching the festivities on BBC television. I actually wish I was there in London, to truly be a part of the big celebration. It looks like a fabulous party, and I love watching boats go by. Indeed, living in a canal town, I always get excited when we go for our daily walk and I spot new boats on the water. I am also very excited about the upcoming Middlewich Folk and Boat festival.

So there we have it. There are many people with very contrasting views about the royal family and their position in society. I am sort of stuck in the middle, because my maternal siblings are very much in support of Her Majesty, since my grandfather is a Navy veteran. My in-laws on the other hand, are anti-monarchy, as is my husband. I just enjoy seeing the festivities, and I love it when people come together to simply have fun and forget about their troubles and woes for a few hours. Keep your chin up, Britain! Enjoy the big party!

A Few Jewellery Craft Projects of Mine

Before I set out on my author journey, I was a keen hobby crafter, and I enjoyed making greetings cards and bead jewellery. I produced lots of beautiful pieces and loved playing with pretty beads and bright colours.

Recently, my crafting took a back seat while I focused on my writing and being a new mother. Happily, I am slowly returning to my first love.

Here are some photos of jewellery I made last week.

Dragonfae Oracle Card Reading

Today I have conducted a quick Oracle card reading using Dragonfae oracle cards by Lucy Cavendish. These cards appeal to my Celtic nature, and they speak volumes to me about our heritage and ancient history as it reawakens in the twenty-first century.

Dragonfae Oracle Card Reading

This reading is for people like myself who are experiencing the shift in energy this year. You may be suffering from extreme mood swings, feeling elated one moment and depressed the next. You might just ‘feel’ something unusual that you can’t explain or describe. It is your natural sensitivity trying to alert you to your true purpose on Earth at this time. Will you accept the challenge?

The cards I pulled out were as follows:

The PendragonPure Male Energy
Dragonfae of RebirthWhole Again
DrystanLook Beneath the Surface
The Blue LadyNothing is Impossible
Queen MabYour Ancient Wisdom is awakening.

You feel different. Your life is crazy right now and you don’t know when it will stop and what lies ahead. That is because your future is unwritten. You chose this lifetime and this human experience, but you cannot forget your past. Awaken your true self.

Recognize yourself as a Warrior, a defender and a powerful being of pure Source energy. Remember your past lives and your past selves, and bring forward your strengths to use now, in this existence.

Do not accept everything at face value. You were raised with very specific beliefs and ideas, but many of these no longer feel right. You might be questioning everything you have ever been taught, and it could be an uncomfortable time as you begin to look beyond the organized and ordered life you were accustomed to. Do not fear it. Embrace it. Ask your questions, seek your answers, and always trust your intuition.
