My First Ghost Hunt: Ordsall Hall, Salford

Have you ever attended an overnight ghost hunt? I have!

Read my blog post to see what happened on my first ghost hunt at Ordsall Hall in Salford, UK.

My First Ghost Hunt

My very first overnight ghost hunt! I arrived at the site very excited and a little nervous, not least because I didn’t know anyone else there. I soon felt at ease with North West Spirit Seekers and was chatting with a couple of other first-time ghost hunters over a cup of hot coffee in the base room. We were all very impressed with the beauty of the Tudor building and couldn’t wait to explore.

Our investigation began in the kitchen. This is laid out in the medieval style, as it would have been back in the day. There is a huge fireplace with large pots and cauldrons, a tiled floor, and an enormous scrubbed table in the centre. Looking around you could almost smell the smoke from the fire and see the kitchen maids and cooks rolling pastry and carving meat to serve to the Lords and Ladies. Our group sensed movement in the inner chamber leading from the large room and we noticed that the herb rack hanging from the ceiling was swinging even though there was no breeze. Once we sat in a circle on the floor the rack became still as though someone was waiting for us to say something… The Medium could see a man and two children in the room with us but they seemed reluctant to communicate.

We then moved into the Tudor Room. Here we used glass divination and spoke to a man who claimed to be Sir John Radcliffe, his daughter Elizabeth and a maid named Jane. Sir John told us he died in battle at Crecy, his children died of illness when they were nine (Elizabeth) and eleven (his son). He told us that his wife committed suicide while consumed with grief and depression. The maid, Jane, knew the children as she was a carer during their lives and she appeared to be a kind, friendly woman. Sir John would only answer our questions when we addressed him correctly which we found quite amusing! Elizabeth seemed quite playful and jolly. Two members of our group had sensations of their hair being pulled and movement around them, which was very interesting. We also sensed a terrier running around us, possibly a former playmate for the children. Generally the atmosphere was happy and welcoming, a nice family home environment.

Ghosts in the Great Hall

Next was the Great Hall where there was a boy hiding behind the suit of armour near the large fireplace. He was afraid of a man in the house. He made contact with us via the glass but only for five minutes and he was very weak because of his fear. There was a spotlight on one wall, which flashed on and off, but we couldn’t get any information from the boy. He soon disappeared.

Our next room was the Star Chamber, which is a beautiful medieval bedroom with an original four-poster bed in the middle. It was named because of the lead stars set into the ceiling, which are very impressive to look at. We all sat on the floor, and suddenly we started giggling uncontrollably, almost like group hysteria! It wasn’t something I have experienced before but was quite funny! Then the atmosphere changed and became oppressive. We sensed an intimidating presence. The Medium told us it was a man near one of the doors and he was purposefully upsetting the women because we weren’t supposed to be in there. We found ourselves moving closer together so we were almost sitting on each other before our nerves failed and we all scarpered!

Grumpy ghost in the bedroom

We retreated upstairs into the Main Chamber. I liked the atmosphere here even less and everyone else agreed with me. Two people in our group felt physically sick and the Medium heard a man telling us to ‘f**k off’. He was a very grumpy man who did not like intruders in his house. A few braver people in our group attempted table tipping but I didn’t want to take part, as I was afraid of what would happen. I really did not feel comfortable in this part of the house.

I decided to return to the Star Chamber but positioned myself away from the door where we had sensed the nasty man before. I had my jacket zipped close around my neck and kept my back to the wall but I was determined to stick it out to the end! The Medium sensed a Lady Margaret trying to show herself in the darkened room and throughout the next hour we saw tiny twinkling lights around the room, shadows as it grew lighter and darker (even though the heavy curtains were drawn completely across the window) and we felt fluctuations in the temperature. At one point we sensed a hooded figure in front of us and I saw someone stood by the fireplace, possibly a man but all I could see was a silhouette. The terrier and the children from earlier came in and out at intervals and lightened the mood.

I left Ordsall Hall with a promise to myself that I would return one day (still waiting!) and the knowledge that ghost hunting is what I was born to do. It really is a beautiful and active building and I am really happy that its history still lives on even after so many centuries have passed.

What Does a Ghost Hunter Do? #paranormalinvestigation

Have you ever watched an episode of the popular TV show Most Haunted, or Ghost Adventures, and wondered just how accurate and true to life the events really are? Well, I am here to tell you the truth.

I am a ghost hunter. It is not glamorous, but it is one of the most exciting things I have ever done, and now I am eager to return to the hunts, after taking a break for a few years to have children.

Catherine Green the Ghost Hunter of SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.

What Does a Ghost Hunter Do?

I have decided to share with you some of my Ghost Hunter Diaries in the run up to Halloween. I will share reports of the first 3 hunts I ever did, and also the report of my treasured Halloween ghost hunt back in 2009. But perhaps first of all I should explain how it all works. What do I mean when I talk about ‘using the glass’ or ‘tipping the table?’

Glass divination simply involves an upturned glass, a sturdy table, and a small group of people. Four people is usually enough. You each place the tip of one index finger on the edge of the glass. You do not exert any pressure, you focus your collective psychic energy using deep breathing exercises and meditation, and then you ask questions. If there is a spirit presence in the room, they may use the collective group energy and push the glass around the table. You can then ask questions, and everything will follow naturally. It is a similar process for table tipping. This time each person will lightly touch the edge of the table with their finger tips, but they can use both hands. The spirit will use their energy to move the table, tipping it in response to questions.

I know what I have seen

I used to watch Most Haunted and I believed everything I saw. I couldn’t help it, I was sucked in by the action and drama on the screen before me. Now I can’t watch the show, because it literally makes me cringe. I mean, yes, it is very entertaining, and I believe parts of the stories must be true. But now that I have experienced séances, attended ghost hunts, and seen for myself just what happens, I know the difference between real and faked. I do not believe in antagonising spirits and ghosts by calling them out and being aggressive. I prefer to be polite, courteous, and respectful. All of the ghost hunts I attended were supervised and led by experienced mediums and paranormal investigators, and my own abilities grew over time as I also became more experienced and confident.

Ghosts do exist. I am certain of that fact. I believe the experiences I have shared with fellow ghost hunters. I have seen a white mist apparition. I have been on the receiving end of glass divination, table tipping, and other paranormal investigation tools (including the Ouija board). And now I will show you some of the results of these experiments. During the coming days in the approach to Halloween I will share some of my early ghost hunting experiences. I hope you enjoy reading them, and please do feel free to ask questions.

Catherine Green the Ghost Hunter

I have always been fascinated by the world of the supernatural and paranormal. It began as a child when I discovered books of ghost stories and tales of witches, vampires and werewolves. I would watch TV shows and documentaries about reported sightings of ghosts and other phenomena, and I was hooked.

This stayed with me into adulthood as I became an author, but before I reached that point, I found another way to satisfy my curiosity about the unexplained world. I became a ghost hunter.

Catherine Green the Ghost Hunter of SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Catherine Green the Ghost Hunter

My Childhood Spirit Friend

Although I had never displayed any obvious signs of mediumship, I did have strange experiences from time to time, and I would feel disconnected from people around me, as though I saw the world differently to everyone else. As a child I had an imaginary friend who just happened to be a large chestnut racing horse named Drummerboy! I thought I dreamt him up after reading a particularly good story in a magazine, but it was years later while in my mid twenties that he reappeared to me one night when I was driving along the motorway. Since then I have come to know him as my travelling companion, galloping along the hard shoulder, warning me of any erratic traffic and protecting me on dark roads.

Finding my Ghost Hunting Circle

It was the growth of the internet, and the beginnings of social media, that introduced me to other people who saw the world the way I do. Up until that point I had often felt lonely and disconnected, and I could never explain why. I have seen spirits in pubs and clubs while on nights out with my friends, but I have learned to whom I can reveal these experiences, and who would rather not know. Many of my friends are interested in ghost stories, but they prefer not to explore the hidden world. Some have joined investigations with me, and we have experienced many curious and fascinating events. Nowadays I am aware of spirit energy as I go about my daily life, and I accept it as normal. Sometimes I might speak to the spirits, and other times I am simply distracted, busy, or leave them alone.

I live in a Haunted House

My husband and I accept that our house is haunted, but there is nothing dangerous or frightening here. The house is old, built in 1896, and so we understand that there are bound to be memories of previous tenants. We find it comforting that the families who lived here are comfortable in their home and like to check up on it from time to time. Being a terraced house, I often discuss the paranormal activity with my neighbour, who is fully aware of the ghosts, and likes to communicate via me and my dowsing rods on regular occasions.

I know there are spirits almost everywhere we travel these days and that some are conscious manifestations while others are simply ‘photographs’ frozen in time that show themselves in the Earth domain to people who are receptive. A building or piece of land that has seen a lot of human activity during life cannot simply be abandoned when the human dies. I believe that at the very least their memory lives on to be seen as a ghost by people that cross their territory. It seems to me that spirits and ghosts are a part of life (or death) and I will continue to communicate with them until my time comes to join them on the other side!

Mental Health Awareness Week

This week is dedicated to sharing information and speaking out about Mental Health Awareness. The state of a human mind has always been of interest to me, as I tried to make sense of the paranormal world that I explored during recent years, and continue to do so. I am also mystified by people as individuals.

What makes us behave in the way that we do? How are our personalities shaped, and why do we go through phases of self sabotage or self destructive behaviour?

How to Hold Sacred Space for Yourself at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
How to Hold Sacred Space for Yourself

Why can’t we talk about it?

It turns out there are many varied and complex explanations. The human brain, and the human mind, are an eternal mystery. Yes, they have been allocated scientific names, doctors and professors dedicate their careers to research and experimenting, and psychiatrists have developed methods of treatment for people who ask for help. Yet still there are many individuals that go about their daily lives in a state of exhaustion and pain. And they cannot talk about it.

You cannot tell someone that you feel ill without displaying some sort of physical symptom. I know this from personal experience. I have manifested joint pain, sickness and general fatigue at various points in my life, when really it was simply because I was run down and in need of rest and respite. Now, personally I have never been diagnosed with a mental illness. I thought I had post natal depression late in 2013, but after visiting medical professionals it was decided that my problems lay elsewhere. They are related to mental health, but I will not disclose further details because the people in question are not comfortable discussing it publicly.

We need to talk about mental health

And there we have it. We cannot talk about mental health. It amazes me every day when I speak to friends and family members, and they tell me they are off work with severe stress and anxiety, or they constantly worry about every aspect of their lives; their work, their family life, their personal choices. So today I reach out to everyone who is feeling ill but cannot explain what it is or why. You are entitled to feel this way, and more importantly, you can move on from it. People are willing to help. Just ask. And know that you are loved by those you are close to. Always.

Vampire Tarot Reading

Following on from my previous post, The Vampire Tarot and Me, here is the Tarot reading in full that I did using The Vampires Tarot of the Eternal Night card deck.

Wooden Tarot box. Vampires Tarot of the Eternal Night Tarot cards Tarot card reading on purple cloth SpookyMrsGreen.com pagan lifestyle blog.
Vampires Tarot of the Eternal Night

Vampire Tarot Reading

Card 1 – The DevilFree will: Take responsibility for your own life. Draw out your inner demons, face them and diminish their power. Or you can remain in limbo, unhappy and unfulfilled. It is your choice.

Card 2 – Six of CupsNostalgia: You are still controlled by the memory of past events. Previous experiences and lifelong habits are hard to break. Yes, it is easy to wallow in self pity and reminiscences. However, now is the time to move on. Free yourself from the past. It is the only way forward.

Card 3 – Knave of PentaclesCompanion: A friend is offering something. Are you ready to receive? Perhaps you seek fulfillment elsewhere, when really your guide was here all along, waiting patiently in the shadows. Let them help you.

Card 4 – Two of PentaclesChoice: It is your choice. Everything is your choice, even when the options seem limited. Will you decide the future of your life, or will you allow someone else to do it for you?

Card 5 – Ace of PentaclesResources: Gather your resources, to equip you at this exciting and terrifying stage. Once you decide what you want to do, the means to create it are waiting to be claimed.

Card 6 – Five of PentaclesNeed: You feel totally alone and totally helpless. Life is hard, and at this stage you struggle to see beyond that. This is a low point, but now you can look up and begin to transform your state of mind.

Card 7 – Three of PentaclesDiscernment: Place your trust wisely in those you meet. Someone may offer the answer to your dreams, but it is a false hope. Think carefully before you act.

Card 8 – Six of PentaclesGift: If a trusted friend offers you a gift, accept it graciously and without guilt. Show your appreciation with kind gestures and words. Be wary of a gift bestowed by a stranger or a new ‘friend.’

Card 9 – Ten of CupsFamily: You may form an unlikely alliance with new (and old) friends. Enjoy the security, accept their support, and offer your own services in return. That is the model for a true family. The link is forged from more than blood and tradition.

The Vampire Tarot and Me: Embrace Your Shadows

“It is time to embrace the shadows, listen to their words, and move on towards the light with knowledge, peace and understanding.”

So begins my journey with The Vampires Tarot of the Eternal Night. I have had this deck of Tarot cards for over a year now, but have not really worked with them. Indeed, I have hardly worked with any of my Tarot cards this year. I have been rather distracted with my children and family dramas.

Anyway, today, being the beginning of October, seems a good time to start. And truthfully, I was drawn to work with the vampire Tarot cards today.

The Vampire Tarot and Me: Embrace Your Shadows

I will post a full reading separately, as there is lot to say in this instance. Suffice to say, if you are stuck in a difficult situation, and you are struggling to find your way out, then perhaps this will help. If not, please move on with love and compassion. The cards come to us when we need to hear their message.

Here is the reading in brief:

There is a sense that you are taking one step forward and two steps back at the moment. Life is hard. It would be easy to give up now, but you are not that kind of person. You have already overcome great struggles and challenges in your life. This one is weak in comparison. The choice is yours to make. Break free, move on, and embrace your true potential. Your guides are out there, and you know who they are. Ask them, and they will help, but only if they see you making the effort to help yourself.

Thank You My Friends #AttitudeOfGratitude

Today I start the week feeling refreshed and happy, and very grateful that I live within a wonderful community.

Just last week I broke out of my ‘Mummy trap’ and ventured to a local pub to meet a group of women from my home town. We have all lived here for several years, most of us originate elsewhere in the UK (and beyond), and now we are on a mission to make friends.

It all started via Facebook, that wonderful social network that creates such drama. I love it, since it brings me together with so many people in so many walks of life.

Thank You for Your Support! at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Thank You for Your Support!

Thank You My Friends

Anyway, our Facebook group originated from a simple question posted on our town’s community page (sort of the online notice board for the locality). One woman asked for suggestions of local groups she could join where she could make friends and be sociable away from her family. The response was immense! I joined in, along with about half of the town I think. We then arranged a pub outing, and now we have plans for parties, meals out, joint exercising ventures and lots more. I love it! I find it amazing that there were so many women in my town looking for friends, and we were all just sat at home or going about our daily business without ever finding an outlet to reach out and actually say hello.

Finally, I had the pleasure of yet another pub visit on Saturday, which is an extremely rare occurrence for me at the moment. My husband and I left our children with their grandmother, and out we went to celebrate a friend’s birthday. It was a bit of a nostalgia night really, because we went out in our childhood town. I visited pubs that my husband and I used to frequent when we were teenagers. Needless to say, the drinking has reduced dramatically nowadays!

Just another Mummy Monday

So here we are. Monday morning, and even though I had a slight disaster when I got up (my shower has broken), I feel happy and contended. Life for me is about the people we interact with, and the experiences we create. I now have lots of new experiences and adventures to look forward to, and I continue to enjoy being with my two oldest and closest friends whenever we are able. Today I am grateful for friends. Have a wonderful week everybody!

Are You a Human Being, or a Human Doing?

Today I am inspired to write about something that is always in the back of my mind, especially since I became a mother three years ago.

This morning I read an article in the Sept/Oct edition of Families Cheshire magazine, and the title was Mindfulness, the secret to happy parenting. It was advertising a local parental coaching company, but I totally agreed with the subject in question.

#MummyMonday Family Day Trip to York City Centre at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Family Day Trip to York City Centre

Are You a Human Being, or a Human Doing?

Many of my local parent friends have been struggling with feelings of guilt that they are not doing enough activities with their younger children as they did with their older ones. I also partially succumbed to these feelings, until I realized what was happening, took a deep breath, and reminded myself that it is not important. My baby daughter has plenty of time yet to play, explore, develop and grow. She does it every day, and she doesn’t care if we are at home playing with toys, in the park playing on the swings, or rushing about from one social activity to another. It’s all the same to a baby!

During recent months I have taken some time to consider my current position in life. I felt that I should be doing more about  my career. Then I felt that I should be returning to regular paid employment to help my husband pay off our combined debts and keep the household finance running smoothly. Then I worried that while I was busy trying to get a job/commuting to work/being tired from work and everything else that my mind conjured up, that I would neglect my children when they are at their most vulnerable. Phew! The human mind, and human emotions are very potent, and often very damaging tools.

Taking stock of my life

So now I am taking stock of my life. Yes, we could use more money in the family. So could millions of other people in the world. Yes, I want to develop my career further (and I refuse to give up on my dream of achieving a Big Book Deal resulting in a film franchise), but you know what? It doesn’t matter. Right now I enjoy cuddles and playtime with my girls. This morning I lifted my face to the sun and rejoiced in the clean, fresh air and the beautiful town in which I live. Right now I am a human being, and that is where I want to be.

How about you? Are you a human being, or are you a human doing?

My Spiritual Journey: Powered by the Supermoon

It has been a turbulent week here in the UK. We were battered by hurricane Bertha over the weekend, and I think we are still feeling her effects now, judging by the high winds and sharp rainstorms today. I also finally found time to reconnect my spiritual self.

During recent months I had become overwhelmed with domestic challenges, parental responsibilities, and various other minor issues that came together to distract me from my journey. Well, I say distract, but truthfully I know this is all part of the experience.

My Spiritual Journey: Powered by the Supermoon

On Monday night I put my children to bed, wandered downstairs, and noticed that I could see a beautiful large full moon from my front window. She caught my attention, and I found myself setting  up an unplanned meditation session. It was perfect, and just what I needed for some self reflection and to regain a sense of peace in my life. I took out my Tarot cards, did a Goddess card reading, and cleansed  my crystals under the light of the supermoon energy. And all to the tune of my favourite spiritual YouTube playlist.

For the rest of this week I have felt calm, collected and more like myself than I have in a long time. It’s funny how we allow ourselves to become so consumed in daily routine that we forget about ourselves and sort of drift away. Now I am allowing myself to do some things that make me happy, rather than dwelling on what I think I should be doing based on the opinions of my peers. Ultimately, we live our lives for a reason. And, as my spiritual brother is fond of saying, we are human beings, not human doings!

Have a fantastic week my friends!

It’s Been a Funny Sort of Month

It has been a funny sort of month. I have once again been very busy, but I can’t remember exactly what I have been doing.

It mainly revolves around breastfeeding, changing nappies, washing, cooking and cleaning, and entertaining a “threenager” and a baby. I can’t really call my elder daughter a toddler any more. For one thing, she is too tall and very articulate! She seems to have acquired her dad’s lanky physique, rather than my petite frame. She is a little whirlwind of chaos, and she has a fantastic imagination.

Busy Being Mother

My baby is also growing up fast. It is her 1st birthday tomorrow, 1st August. This time last year I was huge, hot and very grumpy, and desperate to birth my baby. Now, I keep telling her to stop growing because I want to enjoy her at this age forever… Of course I don’t mean it. I love my children unconditionally, but I admit that I will appreciate a little ‘me’ time when they are old enough to fend for themselves a little more. For now I am enjoying the experience of watching them grow and develop, and it is a novelty to see my baby crawling (her sister was a bum-shuffler).

I say it has been a funny sort of month mainly because I didn’t quite complete my plans. I signed up for a writing challenge called Camp NaNoWriMo, and set myself a word target of 25,000. So far I have almost 10,000 words in my teenage zombie romance novel. I am struggling with it, most probably because it is a new concept. I have never written about zombies before. In fact, I haven’t even read very many zombie stories, so perhaps I need a little more research…

I didn’t win, but it’s fine

Anyway, I end July feeling quite peaceful, because although I didn’t ‘win’ Camp NaNoWriMo, at least it got me writing again. The stories are beginning to roll around my mind, and I am slowly getting my work back on track. There are a few other personal challenges to contend with, and I am still trying to work out when and where I can take the children on holiday. It is all coming together slowly, so for now I will relax and enjoy a weekend of birthday celebration. See you later, everyone!
