The Month of Madness has arrived: #NaNoWriMo

Oh yes, the time has come! We are fast approaching that marvellous month of madness and mayhem…it is time for National Novel Writing Month, 2015. And this year I am ready and raring to go.

There is one slight problem: I don’t have a clue what I am going to write! But that’s never stopped me before… and this year I have a team of writing buddies on hand to assist, which is fabulous. We are forming our own little NaNoWriMo group, just the three of us for now, although we may persuade a few more to join us as we progress.

The Month of Madness has arrived: #NaNoWriMo

Part of the joy of NaNoWriMo is the sense of community and comradeship that we find. Although I have not yet managed to attend local write-in sessions for our regional writing groups, I now have people in my home town that will participate this year, and we have a central venue in which to work together. Amazing! And then, of course, I will have all of my lovely supporters via Twitter and the NaNoWriMo forums. We are always there to console and cajole at odd hours of the day or night, such is the all-consuming madness of the month.

So, for the next couple of days, I must prepare my home and my family for the abandonment that is to come. Fortunately, my elder daughter is now in school, so she is happy to relax when she gets home in the evenings. My younger daughter attends preschool, so I do have at least two days in the week for solid writing sessions. And the rest, well, I will do what I can around the domestic responsibilities. November will be a month for ready meals (sorry kids!), a dusty house (nothing new there, then), and even less sleep than usual for me. But it is totally worth it! See you on the other side… with my brand new manuscript!

A Big Hug to all Parents with School Children

Phew! I was totally unprepared for the emotional rollercoaster that is my elder daughter’s first full week at school, and my younger daughter’s first week at preschool.

We started the term full of excitement, happiness, and a little anxiety. As this week has worn on, I have turned into what can only be described as an emotional wreck! I have swung from happy and free, to grumpy and stressed, and now I am quite simply exhausted. And I know I am not alone here. All around me are parents in exactly the same position, both mums and dads (and even grandparents and carers I presume).

A Big Hug to all Parents with School Children

Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we sail along in the blissfully ignorant belief that our child will be different, and that our experience will be better than what our parents described, or our peers? I think we are just stubborn. And I also believe that we put too many expectations upon ourselves. For example, I had planned to miraculously start cleaning our house, clearing out all our old toys and craft bits, and still find time to do my professional work. How the heck did I even think to accomplish such a task, when I’ve spent most of the week alternately crying, laughing hysterically, and worrying about my children? Aagghhh!!!

And, relax. Take a deep breath. Ready everyone? Breathe in… 1, 2, 3, 4, 5… Breathe out… 1, 2, 3, 4, 5… Our darlings are safe and supported. We are safe and supported. Everything works out as it is supposed to. We are free to be ourselves. We are allowed to care for ourselves. And in the spirit of self care, I am away now to cuddle my new amethyst crystal lamp, breathe in my incense, and rest. See you later, and big hugs for everyone!

A Poem for my Daughter, on Your First Day at School

The day has arrived. Today, my eldest daughter, Elliot, begins her new adventure at Big School.

I wanted to write something poignant, so here is a little poem, written from one proud Mummy to her baby:

A Poem for my Daughter, on Your First Day at School

Treasure your baby, they told me,
for time will fly as she grows.
Remember her joyful smiles
Tiny fingers and wiggling toes.
Yes, I know, I told them,
I know they grow up so fast
And I have treasured and cherished our time together
We played, we learned, we laughed.

Now you begin a new journey
And I will be there at your side,
I will take you to school every morning
And bring you home every night,
Your friends will be with you
To share learning and laughter,
I will always treasure our precious time
My sweetheart, my Elliot, my daughter.

I’m a #CampNaNoWriMo Winner!

I am so happy! My Muse has returned, and I have reached my target and won #CampNaNoWriMo for the first time. I attempted it in previous years and was unsuccessful, so this feels like a real achievement.

#CampNaNoWriMo differs from #NaNoWriMo because you choose the word count, and everything is more relaxed. I decided to aim for 25,000 words on my new novel, and I got there in 23 days, hooray!

And now I will continue writing, because the words are flowing again. Here is a synopsis of my new novel, Hunting the Hunted:

One day he discovers a vampire hunter watching him. He lures her underground to fight, but his control is lost when she brings backup in the form of  battle hardened twins William and Samantha. By a curious twist of fate, Frederick is saved by the intervention of an enchanting young female vampire. His lust for life awakened, he sets about seeking revenge from his attackers, taking pleasure wherever and whenever he chooses.

My Spiritual Journey: Manifesting my Desires #LawofAttraction

You may recall that I am currently in the process of revisiting old spiritual practices that I had fallen behind with due to various domestic distractions. I have been learning about, and practicing, Law of Attraction, for almost ten years now.

My journey began in a pretty Cornish tourist town called Looe (later to become the fictional home of my Redcliffe novels series). I found myself at a loose end one morning, wandering around the town alone. And I saw a pretty little angel shop, full of crystals, statues, butterflies and fairies, among other things. I bought some crystals, which began another adventure that I am still exploring,Ā and I bought a book called You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay.

#BookReview You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay

Manifesting my Desires

That book quite literally changed my life. I had believed people when they said that before. I mean, I love reading, but how can a book change your life? Well, evidently it can, and this one did. As I read the words, I began to feel a light dawning. The world suddenly began to make sense to me. Louise Hay’s words were very practical, very simple, and totally true. I returned home from that trip feeling invigorated and ready to take action to fix the ills of my life.

It was a slow process, because I had a lot to learn, and I still do. I find that working with the Law of Attraction can be quite tricky, because very often it goes against everything that I have been raised to believe and follow. It requires me to trust my instincts, to believe what my soul tells me, and that is sometimes challenging when I live in the ā€˜real world.’

Learning about Law of Attraction

After I read that first book, I was hooked. I went out and bought or borrowed as many more of these types of books as I could get my hands on. I found Sonia Choquette, Esther and Jerry Hicks with their Teachings of Abraham series, and a whole lot of other authors and teachers. I became addicted to Hay House Radio, and I started writing and speaking daily affirmations. I also made an effort to resume writing in my journal, although I didn’t update it every day. There was so much to explore.

I am still exploring now. And more recently, during the past eighteen months, I found a new teacher and inspirational person. I joined Google+ in an effort to build on my author platform, and found my way to the Hangout with Michael show. Michael Losier tells it like it is. He lives, breathes and teaches Law of Attraction, and he resonates with me very deeply. So, I am stepping out once again on my journey, continuing the quest, manifesting all of the happy things that I like to feel in my life. We can all do it, you know. Just allow!

Angel Therapy Oracle Card Reading for your Spiritual Healing

On the night of the full moon, right at the beginning of July, I felt compelled to perform an Angel Therapy Oracle Card reading. I asked for guidance on behalf of those who have lost their way in life.

Do you feel the need of a spiritual hand to guide and support you through these challenging times? Then this reading is for you:

Photo of assorted Tarot cards and crystals belonging to Catherine Green. Angel Therapy Oracle Card Reading for your Spiritual Healing

1. Be Willing to Forgive – You have been hurt by someone who you trusted and loved. Perhaps the blame does not lie entirely at their door. How does it feel, carrying the weight of pain and anger towards these loved ones? Do they even know how you feel? Are you ready to release it? Believe me when I say that you will feel physically and emotionally better once you consciously make an effort to disperse the feelings of pain, suffering and betrayal that you cling to so desperately. Free yourself of the burden.

2. Shield Yourself – The world is a frightening place. People are unpredictable and volatile. Every day you hear about a new disaster, or crime, or discord in your community. Do not believe everything you see in the news. There are always two sides to a story. Protect yourself and your sensitive energy by constructing a bubble of white light all around your body. This is your shield: it is your power, your sacred space. Ask Archangel Michael for help if you feel the need. He will come to you in spirit, offering strength and support as your silent guardian. Hear his messages, and know that you are safe.

3. You are a Powerful Lightworker – Now is a good time to embrace the power that you feel within. You came into this life with a purpose, but you got a little distracted by human urges. Do not worry. This was all part of your experience. Now you can move forward, to wherever your soul is calling. There you can perfect the art of your Craft. Maybe you feel compelled to explore holistic health. Perhaps your interests and sympathies are in more counselling-oriented arenas. Or perhaps yours is a journey of exploration, where you might walk a new path, share a new vision, and build a network of healers and lightworkers just like you. What is calling you right now? Explore it. See where it takes you.

4. Solar Plexus Chakra – It is safe for you to be powerful, and to take charge of your life in positive ways. Release the fear. You are no longer a victim. You have no need of guilt, or pain, or hatred towards others. You are the creator of your life experience, and you may lead by example. Be honest with yourself. Be true.

5. Crown Chakra – Pay attention to your ideas, as they are messages of true Divine guidance sent in answer to your prayers. Do these ideas sound crazy, wild, or unattainable? They are not. Anything is possible. Simply ask your spirit guides for help and they will show you the way. Perhaps it will take longer than you would like. Do it anyway. At least then you can enjoy the adventure, and who knows where it might lead?

I hope you find some encouragement in this reading, my friends. Now is the time to embrace light and love, and move our people forward, into our true existence.

Blessed Be, and Infinite Love, my friends.

What does a Writer really Think?

The sun was setting on a late June day in the North of England. I had gone upstairs to get ready for bed, and as I closed my bedroom curtains, I paused and stared thoughtfully ahead.

My bedroom looks out over the quiet street that is our cul-de-sac, bordered by a freight railway line. Across the road there is a row of semi detached bungalows. Behind them to my right I can see the roofs of the row of Victorian terraced houses on our neighbouring street. To my left I can see a new housing estate, consisting of several blocks of flats. This is where my attention was drawn that night.

What does a Writer really Think?

I saw a man on the balcony of a top floor apartment. He was far enough away that I could not see his features clearly, only that he is white, of average build, with dark hair. He might be a similar age to me, early to mid-thirties. He was bathed in the orange glow of electric light from the room behind, and he was talking to someone on his mobile phone. Nothing special there, you might think. But for some reason, I stopped and watched him, partially concealed behind my black curtains with silver foil print gargoyles. This man fascinated me. I could make use of him… why was he on the phone? Who was he speaking to? Was there a specific reason for a phone call at this hour of the night, almost 10 o’clock, middle of the working week?

In my mind he became a creature of the night. Perhaps he is a were-animal, and this suburban apartment is his link to the human world. Maybe he was dealing with pack business, and when darkness fell, he disappeared into the night, intent on resolving the issues or patrolling his territory. Ah, yes, he could be a very convincing black leopard, perhaps. Or maybe he is a vampire, and he was making arrangements to meet friends or ambush a known vampire hunter in the area, thus protecting himself and his kind. Or, he could be a witch, planning a coven meeting, or preparing for the summer harvest celebrations… the possibilities are endless.

The trait of the writer

All this flashed through my mind in the space of about 3 minutes, as I watched my unsuspecting character going about his innocent (I hope!) human business. He never saw me. I am adept at concealing myself when I want to people watch. I think this is the trait of a writer. We are always working, whether that work translates onto paper or computer, or not. We observe, we gather stories, we embellish. We are always creating.

I Need a Writing Retreat: Hello #CampNaNoWriMo!

My writing has not been forthcoming of late. It is all my own fault.

I have allowed myself to stray from the path. I have become too easily distracted by domestic activities, holidays, social events and the like. At the moment the only writing I manage to do on a regular basis is for my blogs, and even that is becoming sketchy during recent weeks.

Life is getting in the way, as the old saying goes. I need a break. I need… #CampNaNoWriMo.

Where is my Muse?

My main problem with writing is that I flutter about and do not immerse myself fully in my work at the moment. It was easier when I was writing the first three instalments of the Redcliffe novels. Back then I would put my daughter to bed at night and settle down for three-five hours of solid writing. And it was brilliant. I thrived on it. The story burst forth from my mind, the characters leaped onto the page, and my Muse was alive and vibrant. And then something happened. It was around the time I became pregnant with my second child. My Muse went on strike. And she has not yet properly returned.

I have had flashes of inspiration, but nothing that gives me the incentive to sit down at my computer and just write. I have had a couple of evenings where I managed an hour here and there. I have a couple of completed manuscripts that need further editing so that I can send them to publishers. I also have a complete edited novel that has so far not been snapped up by a publisher or agent. I cannot imagine why. Who wouldn’t want to publish a novel called The Vampire of Blackpool?

I need to write

Anyway, I am fed up with procrastinating. I need to write. I need to write properly. And for that I need deadlines, encouragement, a sense of purpose. And here comes #CampNaNoWriMo. Perfect! For the whole month of July I can immerse myself in a virtual log cabin in the wilderness of the wild and distant Internet, and I can write my story, whatever that may be. I think this one is about a lone vampire lurking beneath the streets in Manchester. I am not sure. I will ask my Muse for help. Perhaps she will be coaxed out by the promise of a hot chocolate with marshmallows… Who is with me? See you later, campers!

They Grow Up Too Fast!

Not so long ago I was complaining about always being told to cherish every moment with my children while they are young, because they grow up quickly and soon it will all be gone. Well, now I am feeling that anxiety, that nostalgia, that emotion that I scoffed at before.

It is true what they say: you can never understand something other people tell you about, until you experience it for yourself.

Image of a woman wearing sunglasses smiling and holding a baby girl in her arms, with a preschool girl beside her wearing a hippo cap. #MummyMonday SpookyMrsGreen with her Children copyright Catherine Green of SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.

They Grow Up Too Fast!

My eldest daughter is about to enter the education system. Yes, she is starting at Big School. And that is a Very Big Thing to us emotionally charged mothers. After all, we have spent the past 5 years nurturing these babies (if you include their time in the womb). We fed them, changed their nappies, witnessed their milestone achievements, introduced discipline, routine, playtime and boundaries for safety and morality. And we will continue to do so. It is our job, along with our husbands, partners or the children’s fathers.

But right now I am focusing on the emotion. As I write this, I contemplate the fact that tomorrow morning I will drop my daughter off at Big School, and leave her there for two whole hours. Now, she has been at pre-school for three days every week for the past two years. You would think I would be used to it. But this is different. This is Big School. This means a new routine for all of us, including me, her younger sister, and our dog. Now we will have to prepare to leave the house earlier and walk to school every day for five days. I will have to prepare her uniform, help with school projects, arrange her attendance in any clubs she might express an interest in. And I might also (gulp) be coerced into joining the PTA… Phew!

The start of a new adventure

So there we are. Tomorrow is the start of a whole new adventure. She will have her first taster of school life. I will have my first trial of the school run (minus the dog, to begin with; he can get a bit over-excited around new people, and I can do without the added stress of wrestling an exuberant Staffie X while trying to keep it all together and not cry in front of the other parents, teachers and children). But I do feel anxious. I am excited. I am…unsure. Please, parents, do share your own feelings about this new adventure. Perhaps you remember how it was for you and your children. Or maybe you are experiencing it right now, just like me… We can do this!

My Spiritual Journey: The Power of Positive Thinking

I am in the middle of a huge personal change. Outwardly, nothing is different. I am still your average mother and housewife, running around with the children, doing the chores, managing the house, and all the other nuances of a mundane life.

But inwardly, well, everything is changing. And the reason for this is that I actively chose to step away from the dark, consuming, terrifying depression that threatened to engulf me, and I chose instead to focus my thoughts and energies on healing and being healed.

Inspirational Quote with SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Inspirational Quote

My Spiritual Journey

Ha, you might scoff, that is not depression. How dare you trivialize such a serious and dangerous illness? Well, I can assure that I am not. True, I have not received an official, medical diagnosis from my local GP. I have visited my doctor’s surgery several times during the past two years, all for stress-related ailments and problems. One time I was referred to another medical unit for assessment. They simply advised me to get external marriage counselling, and they sent me away. My subsequent visits yielded nothing more than a vague suggestion to get some rest and take paracetamol for my aches and pains. Yeah, because I can rest when I am home alone with two small children, all day every day!

Anyway, the whole situation seemed to engulf me, but it took a while for me to understand. You see, my husband lives with a very severe anxiety disorder, and it manifests in his inability to break away from being in the workplace. I put all of my attention into supporting him, and caring for our children and our home, but I forgot to pay attention to myself. I fell into the classic trap. We care for everyone around us, and we forget that we, as individuals, need care and attention too. And often it all comes to a point where we go beyond coping, we fall apart, and everything is plunged into chaos.

Law of Attraction

Fortunately for me, I already practise Law of Attraction, the power of positive thinking, mindfulness and meditation. My problem was that I had let my self care program slip while I became absorbed in my family’s needs. I stopped meditating. I stopped studying holistic health. I even slowed right down in my personal interests such as reading books, doing crafts, and socialising with friends. I was too tired. I had given it all up. I had become a machine, and I was all out of gas. And I crashed. I spent all of last week in a haze of misery, self pity, aching and sore, feeling completely exhausted.

And then, I snapped out of it. Well, sort of, I mean, it’s not that easy, is it? I took some time to think very carefully about my situation, my place in life, and where I was heading. I made a decision. I made several decisions. And then I started meditating again. I performed some proper space clearing rituals in my home, and around my body. I am still doing it now, since this program has to be continuous if it is to be effective. That’s the point, you see.

We have to accept ourselves, and care for ourselves, before we can care for those around us. So I am doing just that. I will make arrangements for other people to have my children so that I can have a break. I have already resumed my crafting hobbies, and that alone has really cheered me up. And the rest? Well, we have to take each day as it comes. But the point is, I refuse to sink right into the depression that beckoned so temptingly. No. I remain focused on a higher energy vibration. I am a positive person. I am making positive changes in my life. I am. Are you?
