3 Worries That Families Can Solve Together

Families can go through a lot of challenges. However, one of the most difficult situations that families can experience is when one member refuses to share their worries. There is a lot that can be said about sharing your problems with others.

First of all, a problem shared is indeed a problem halved. Of course, it doesn’t make issues disappear. However, when the whole family stands as one against the issue, it becomes a lot easier to tackle and overcome.

Secondly, a lot of people fail to consider the disruptive and destructive influence of stress on the family. Stress is a force of darkness that can tear your family apart. When you go through a lot of pressure without letting your loved ones know, you can become distant, irritable, and prone to losing your temper. Families who can’t share their problems tend to fall apart over time. Of course, all issues are worth sharing. Even if your family can’t help, they can try to support you through the hardship. But, what you need to share in priority is the big worries: Finance, citizen rights, health. Here’s how working as a family can help.

Reiki precept: "Just for Today... Do not worry." at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Reiki precept: “Just for Today… Do not worry.”

Achieve financial stability

Financial stability is something to aspire to, not just as an individual but as a family. As such, you need to discuss money problems as a whole, even if you might be the only one struggling with debt. Ensuring your family knows and understands your issues can be crucial to creating a family budget. You can learn together to cut down unnecessary expenses and save more. Additionally, you can also share costs more effectively. If one partner struggles with money problems, it can be a good idea to create a financial plan that gives them some breathing room to recover their debt. For example, if you need to cancel kids private lessons for a few months, why not look at cost-effective alternatives together?

Ensure you won’t be separated

Most partners don’t have to worry about unwanted separation. However, if one of the partners is an EU citizen, they may be concerned about their right to remain in the UK after Brexit. Rather than worrying alone, they can share their fears with the family. A foreign-born citizen can apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK. Bering married to a British citizen doesn’t grant automatic British citizenship. However, it can make the process smoother as spouses can support each other and help to gather documentation.

Improve overall health

Most family members tend to share significant health issues with their loved ones. However, when the health issue is no reason for immediate concern, such as trying to lose weight, they often choose to keep the matter private. Unfortunately, even minor problems can be a source of stress. Someone who is trying to lose weight can struggle with low self-esteem, which can affect their relationship. The bottom line: don’t bottle it up. Share your goals and needs with your family. It’s an excellent excuse to introduce healthy routines into the household and create a plan to get fit together.

Families who work through their worries together tend to stay together. They build a strong and meaningful bond while solving each other’s issues. In short, a problem shared is a bonus for your relationship and your mental health. Shared problems benefit all.

3 Ways To Help Your Children Deal With the Moving Process

As far as moving to another country is concerned, we may have made our minds up, but when we have family members in tow, there’s a lot more to it than just what we want. Helping your children to cope with the idea of relocating is not just about making them feel at home in this new place, but it’s about ensuring they get that same sense of excitement that we do.

How can you help your children cope with relocating, especially when it can be so stressful for us adults?

Do Not Let Your Children See You Stressing Out About the Process

The fact of the matter is that moving is one of those overwhelming tasks that requires us to deal with visas, immigration issues, not to mention the finances. And of course, while there are lawyers to help with immigration and professional help at every turn, you can easily feel overwhelmed by the process. If your children are already struggling to come to terms with the idea of moving, them seeing you at the end of your tether will not help. It’s important to learn how to calm down, but also remember that while these little stresses can be frustrating in the short-term, they are serving a much bigger purpose. Keep your perspective.

Paint the Picture for Them

One of the hardest things we can do in life is move, because, in so many ways, we are taking a leap of faith or going into the unknown. If we want our children to come around to our way of thinking, we’ve got to make sure that they see the bigger picture. They may not care that it’s for their own good in the long run, or that they will have a better life when they leave school, but what you can do at this point is make it look better for them now in comparison to their current life. Yes, they will be missing their friends, but when you start to show your children what options they have available to them, such as the opportunity to mix with other children or help them to choose the school they want to go to, these are all things that can give them some peace of mind in the process.

Maintain Strong Ties With Your Family Back Home

One of the biggest lessons we can all learn from when we are moving is that, for our children, they need to not feel like it’s a massive upheaval. This is easier said than done, but when we are keeping the family and friend ties strong, this is going to make them feel that connection to back home, but we have to also be aware that they cannot just stay stuck in a homesick frame of mind. It’s crucial to remember that everybody comes around to it in their own time. You set the example, but also make sure that you have an abundance of skills in terms of coping. While this can be a short-term stress, you need to remember that moving will improve your family life in so many fantastic ways.

5 Common Misconceptions About Pagans

It is human nature to fear and judge the things in life that we do not understand fully. One example of this is paganism. Pagans are not a new thing in the world; however, even though they have been around for some time, it seems that they are still one of the most misunderstood groups in the world.

Want to make sure that you understand as much about paganism as you can? Have a pagan in your life you want to make sure feels understood and appreciated? If you do, you should look at our guide to the five common misconceptions about pagans.

Pexels – CCO Licence

1. Pagans and Demonic Magick are not the same

One common misconception about pagans is that their beliefs are the same as that used in demonic magick, satanism and various other shall we say what are perceived to be ‘darker’ religions. However, this is not the case. Those who believe in the pagan religion do not believe in the devil, and these two beliefs are not linked.

In fact, not only do pagans not believe in the devil, but they also do not believe in there being one God. Instead, they think that several gods and goddesses have their own part to play in the world’s harmony.

This can be compared somewhat to Buddhists and Hindus too.  On the whole, paganism is a peaceful religion that worships nature and all of the good things in life.

2. It is an ancient religion

Paganism has some foundations that date back a considerable amount of time; however, it is still very much a living religion with millions of followers worldwide. It has also gone on to spawn modern religions like Wicca, which was invented by Gerald Gardener in the 1950s, and which owes a great debt to ancient pagan practices.

Gerald was an anthropologist and, according to many sources, he is the one who founded Wicca off the back of many pagans who came before him.

3. It isn’t a real religion

One question that often comes up when it comes to pagans is whether or not they actually believe in a real religion. Paganism is recognised as a religion, meaning those who celebrate the events throughout the year can actually do so as and when they wish, and they have the right to do so under religious freedom laws

It really depends on the part of the world that you live in as to whether or not those holidays are allowable away from work or whether they are something that you just have to celebrate within normal everyday life. Some pagans are forced to book holidays from work to celebrate important events in the Pagan calendar, such as Lammas, but that’s modern life for you!

4. There is animal sacrifice

Another misconception that can be linked to the dark religion misconception is whether or not pagans sacrifice any animals during their rituals. This may have been a popular practice, carried out by many religions in the deep and distant past, however, it is not the case today. In fact, paganism in its many forms is a celebration of nature and all the living things that call this planet their home.

Pagans love animals and do not want ever to feel that they need to harm them or kill them as a part of a rite. Sure, there are going to be offerings as a part of the ceremonies, but these will be of bread, fruit and wine, never anything living.

5. There is a dark bible

There is no book that pagans follow as a part of their religion, let alone a dark bible that can be used for evil purposes. Paganism is usually learnt from person to person and is passed down as someone joins a particular group.

Depending on the person, they may decide to write their own pagan book, with all the essential things they believe and follow. However, rather than including dark spells or evil doings, they are much more likely to include records of the person’s dreams and any herbal remedies that they may make and use on a regular basis.

I hope that this blog post has helped you understand more about the pagan religion and how it is all too easy to judge their beliefs and approaches without thoroughly learning about them and what they mean to each individual.

The important thing, like so many things in life, is that you take the time to learn and to show your understanding, as this will, in turn, allow you to improve yourself and the world around you too. Something that pagans themselves believe and put out into the universe.

Reflections on a School Year during the Covid-19 Pandemic

We have reached the end of another school year. This was yet again a school year like no other. We spent two months in lockdown doing home-schooling at the start of 2021.

We adhere to new regulations, restrictions and practices. My children have lost out on so much. But we made it through.

Reflections on a School Year during the Covid-19 Pandemic

How has your school year been from 2020-21? My daughters were in Year 3 and Year 5, and both missed out on residential trips that they had been looking forward to. My younger daughter has lost out on experiences that my elder daughter enjoyed when she was in Year 3. My elder daughter lost out on experiences that should have given her more independence as a child in an older year group. Instead, she is left feeling unsure about doing things by herself, she is not ready to go far from my side, and her mental health has taken a hit. Both daughters have felt the sting of the pandemic.

This week I received my daughters’ school reports, and they were both excellent as always. Yes, there are areas that need improvement, but the overall report is more than satisfactory. I know that my girls can do what they need to, they are articulate and intelligent. What I want them to experience is the wider world, meet different people, try different things. Unfortunately, our small world has closed down even more due to the pandemic, and we have had to go along with it. They are not allowed to interact with each other at school because they are in class bubbles, and that has been hard for my younger daughter who looks up to her big sister and looks to her for help when she needs it.

We are feeling fed-up

We end the year feeling tired, a bit fed-up with the pandemic situation, and ready for some time out. It should look and feel more normal when we return in September, but then I will have the emotional challenge of applying for high school. I’m not ready! I am so proud of my daughters for facing the challenges and smiling throughout everything. They have gone through a lot of upheaval during the past eighteen months, certainly something I never experienced at their age. They deserve a treat. And I know just what that will be! Here’s to a fun, relaxing, and loving summer holiday.

Five Ways To Up Your Meditation Practice To The Next Level

Meditation is a practice that’s seen a huge surge in popularity recently and it’s no mystery as to why. After the last year and a bit that we’ve been through, many of us have spent some time working on improving our mental states and doing some well-deserved introspection.

Meditation isn’t easy, however. Getting the most out of your meditative state requires a certain clearness of mind that can be somewhat elusive – especially if you’re prone to wandering. Luckily, there are a few things you can try that might entirely transform your meditative process, or even your entire relationship with mindfulness.

Practicing mindfulness is something we can all benefit from, no matter what age or gender you might be. With that in mind, here are a handful of helpful tricks that might help you form that connection with meditation that might just change your life.

Image by Oluremi Adebayo on Pexels

1. Carry out a mundane task in the meantime

Have you ever been in the middle of a routine task and found your body on autopilot while your brain’s checked out? That might be the key to finally helping you get some mindfulness in.

For a lot of people who want to get started with meditation but might not know where to start, the silence and stillness of the routine can be quite imposing. Not many of us relish the opportunity to sit quietly with nothing to do; that’s when the boredom and frustration might start to creep in. Any meditative practice that inspires negative feelings is – as you might guess – counterproductive and should be avoided at all costs.

Giving your hands something to fidget with can help guide your mind into a comfortable state more inclined to relaxing. Consider utilising a fidget toy or similar sort of gadget that doesn’t require much mental attention to use.

2. Try giving yourself a tarot reading

While this one might require some homework before you’ve got it figured out fully, the end result can be incredibly rewarding. Tarot reading might even change the way you view yourself and the world around you.

Tarot reading is a practice that was developed in the 1430s in Italy. The art of tarot denotes the practice of dealing a deck of 78 specialised tarot cards, and closely examining (or ‘reading’) the resultant narrative that emerges from the draw. Each card is unique and has a distinct set of properties, emotions, and symbols attached to it.

If you take the time to get a feel for the individual cards’ various meanings (which isn’t as hard as it seems – there’s a pattern to it that can be taught) you can start to draw cards for yourself.

Historically, tarot was thought of as a tool for telling the future. Whether you believe in the possibility of fortune telling or not, tarot is actually an incredibly useful tool for you to pause and reflect on your life. As the various images of the deck present themselves to you, it’s interesting to see what your brain thinks of in response. It can help you identify areas of your life you might not be satisfied with, and even help to illuminate some paths you hadn’t previously considered as possible.

3. Use visual stimuli

Giving your eyes something to focus on that doesn’t require the help of the brain can be a great method of helping your mind slip into the state of relaxation necessary to truly get the most out of meditation. Finding some ambient visuals can help alleviate some of the restlessness that many people feel when they first decide to give meditation a try.

If you engage your eyes by watching a piece of repetitive visual stimulus, your brain might find it easier to let go of some of the latent stress you might be carrying with you.

As we go about our daily lives, we don’t even realise the level of tension we may be holding on to. Meditation is the key to easing some of that burden, and visuals might be the step needed to help it go to the next level.

4. Listen to ambient noise

Ambient noise has the ability to completely transport you to another place mentally. If the silence aspect of meditation is something that you might struggle with, then this is something to strongly consider. Sometimes, when we’re presented with a scenario with a lack of stimulation (audio, visual, or otherwise) we can respond with an automatic level of unease – the opposite of what we want when we’re meditating.

There’s nothing wrong with playing some rain or ocean sounds in the background to soften the harsh environment a little bit. That being said, it’s often best to stay away from music as this can start to stray into the territory of distraction. At the end of the day, if you’re focusing on your meditation, you should avoid surrounding yourself with any other input that’s likely to ground you in the physical world.

White noise machines can also be useful for this purpose, as they can remove the discomfort of complete silence without relying on environmental noise like rain, which some might still find distracting.

Ultimately, give a few options a try until you find something that clicks for you. Everyone is different, which means there are no one-size-fits-all solutions. Give it enough time, and eventually you’ll make a breakthrough that’ll help you learn more about yourself.

5. Don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself!

It’s important not to let this be the pinnacle of your self care. There are a huge number of ways to treat yourself – if meditation doesn’t work for you, give other methods of self-care a try!
Consider taking up a new hobby, buying yourself a new treat, or trying lucky charms. As with all things, if you proceed with caution and do what’s best for your body, you’ll find that your mindset will improve. It may take some time, effort, and dedication but it’ll be worth it in the end.

Chronic Voice Link-up: Suffering Again but Moving Forward

Welcome to July and our monthly A Chronic Voice blog link-up. My mood has been wild for the past month. I have gone from extreme down in the dumps to wild elation, all due to my chronic pain condition and the way I respond to it.

Read on for my take on the July prompts.

Chronic Voice blog link-up for July by Catherine Green of SpookyMrsGreen.com pagan lifestyle blog.
Chronic Voice blog link-up for July

AGING: I am fast approaching middle age and recently the consequence of aging has been forefront in my mind. While I am not quite 40, I have been thinking about whether my chronic pain condition will develop more symptoms as I get older. During the past month I have had an ECG because my new ophthalmologist wanted to ensure my heart is healthy as this could be affected by the FOXC2 gene that I carry. I have heard nothing since the ECG, so I presume my heart is fine. Still, will this deteriorate as I grow older? I don’t know.

SUFFERING: Right now, I am suffering again. For the past six months or so my focus has been on managing severe Dry Eye Syndrome. I changed my eyedrops, switched to a new eyelid care regime and moved to a new hospital. Now my ingrowing eyelashes are growing again, and nobody will help. I am left to remove the eyelashes with tweezers myself, and it hurts. Then I have to live with pain from the scratches that they cause on my corneas. And the dry skin around my eyes because they water due to the foreign body sensation. I hate it.

TRANSFORMING: In other news, and away from my chronic pain condition, I feel that my life is transforming and evolving into something better and more positive. The eye problems will always be there. I just learn new ways to cope. My reiki business is growing nicely and while I am practicing reiki healing on clients, I am also healing myself with the universal energy. Win-win! My children are growing older and moving up in school years, so now we have the task of choosing a high school for my elder daughter. It is bittersweet knowing that she is growing more independent and needs less physical support from me. I have more time to myself which I do enjoy, but I miss caring for my babies.

NAVIGATING: We finish school for summer holidays later this week, and I will be navigating a whole new set of emotions relating to the high school situation and my girls growing older. I have lined up a distraction, however. We are looking to adopt two kittens so they should soothe my maternal instincts for the rest of the year! I’m not sure how our dog will respond but we plan to navigate the transition slowly and carefully. Hopefully, he will make friends with his feline siblings. Fingers crossed!

VISUALISING: I have been visualising for many years during my meditation practice and use of affirmations for wellbeing and selfcare. I find the process relaxing and helpful for my needs. I have a vivid imagination, so it is easy for me to visualise different scenarios. Right now, I am visualising my new autologous serum eyedrops being delivered sooner rather than later. The doctor seems convinced that they will ease my eye pain. I need them now.

Chronic Voice Link-Up

I joined the social network for A Chronic Voice because I needed to find people who understand what life is like with chronic illness, people like me. Today I have written a post using the July link-up prompts, to show my experience of living with a chronic pain disorder. Shall We Get a Kitten?

I have always considered myself a dog person, but recently the opportunity arose for me to adopt a kitten (or two) and now I am thinking about the implications of my decision.

I welcome any advice in the comments below!

#MummyMonday Shall We Get a Kitten? by SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
#MummyMonday Shall We Get a Kitten?

Shall We Get a Kitten?

My youngest daughter has always loved cats. She had a special relationship with her grandma’s cat as a toddler and has been asking for one for years. We have always had dogs. We now have a rescued Staffy X who is 4 years old and full of attitude. My husband thinks that he will eat a kitten. I am not so sure. I believe that if we introduce the dog and the kittens carefully, maintaining safe distances and never leaving them unsupervised together, we can all learn to live together happily. It might even calm the dog down, once he knows he is not king of the household.

I borrowed some books from our local library for advice and have been reading them with my children. We have a room that can become a temporary nursery while the kittens are young, we have time to devote to them, and I think they will provide a good distraction from the outside world as we continue to navigate through the pandemic. I would rather have my children at home playing with kittens this summer if I’m honest, and we have no big plans for holidays away from home.

The final push for me was that the kittens we are looking to adopt will be ready to leave their mother at around the time of my daughter’s birthday at the beginning of August. It’s a sign! Oh, and they are black cats, so they will make perfect familiars for me and my little witchlings
Ok, I don’t need convincing. Call me cat and dog Mom!

When we built our first cutting machine, we saw the potential for a simple yet powerful tool to completely transform the way people think about crafting, designing, and making. Since then, we’ve continued to innovate with new machines, materials, and tools, and Cricut users worldwide continue to amaze us with the personal, meaningful, and unique things that they make.
