Tandem Breastfeeding and Attachment Parenting

I have become a bit of an advocate for breastfeeding. It started with the birth of my eldest daughter in 2011, at a time when my close friend was training to be a breastfeeding counsellor with the National Childbirth Trust. She shared her training experience with me, and I had watched her breastfeed her own son a few years before, so she was essentially my mentor in the whole process.

Tandem Breastfeeding and Attachment Parenting

Before I got pregnant, breastfeeding was not something I really thought about. I know that my mother breastfed me for a short time as a baby, but I also know that my generation was largely formula fed, because that was the recommended way to feed babies. It seems that now there are huge divisions between mothers who do breastfeed and those who do not. I am not here to be judgemental, because I know how hard it can be, and I have friends who have been unable to breastfeed and subsequently feel guilty for resorting to formula. We are very lucky to have access to healthy feeding alternatives when the need arises, and I appreciate that.

Ultimately I will always recommend breastfeeding when people ask. I happily breastfeed my children in public, although I am discreet about it. I have never encountered any negative responses from strangers as I know other mothers have. In fact, on several occasions I have been approached by strangers who commended me for openly breastfeeding my child and doing what comes naturally. It is a wonderful, nurturing process, and I thoroughly enjoy being able to provide for my babies in the most important way.

Breastfeeding two children at the same time

Now, following the birth of my second daughter, I am experiencing a whole new aspect of breastfeeding. My eldest daughter is two and a half, and she is still breastfeeding. This is beginning to bring a few comments from my family, although mostly they are all very supportive of my decision to continue. People ask me when I will stop feeding my older daughter, and I simply tell them that it is her decision. She still needs my milk, and I am happy to provide it for her. She is healthy, she eats solid food very well, and she doesn’t feed from me very often any more. She simply takes a little milk for comfort once or twice a day.

Last weekend I had my first experience of ‘tandem feeding.’ I had my newborn daughter on one breast, and my toddler on the other. It was bizarre, and strangely exhilarating! Yes, I am exhausted. It takes a lot of energy for my body to produce so much milk, and I feel physically sore and uncomfortable as a result. But I wouldn’t change it. For me breastfeeding my children is a very important part of their development, and my own well-being. We all thrive as a result of my natural mothering capability.

Come on Baby, We Want to See You!

I am still waiting. At almost 40 weeks pregnant, struggling through the biggest heatwave to hit the UK for 7 years, and feeling the biggest, heaviest, and most uncomfortable I have ever been in my life, I have just about had enough.

And then the royal baby makes his appearance. I am so envious of the new royal parents right now, because for them at least, that particular hurdle is passed!

Come on Baby, We Want to See You!

My 2 year-old daughter was born at 38 weeks, so this time around I and most of my family and friends thought it would be a similar scenario. Apparently not. My baby boy/girl (we don’t know yet) is either being stubborn, lazy or is just too darn comfortable in there! I have tried all the tricks suggested to bring on labour. Nothing is working. I am finding no reprieve from the oppressive, sticky heat of our unusual British summer, and now I have even lost the energy to write or do any work.

That was my update, sorry about the grumbling. I just have to get it all out. My daughter said it perfectly the other day. She sat next to me on her bed, put her hands on my bump, and said, “Come on baby, we want to see you!”

Meet the author

Hi,
My name is Tom Ufert, and I am here to talk a little about life and the challenges it presents us with. My grandmother always told me that adversity builds character… boy, was she ever right about that.
You see, when I was told that I had MS, the same condition I watched my mother struggle with, I vowed to fight it. A short time later, when I was involved in a car accident and paralyzed from the waist down as a result, I vowed to fight it. When I was told, upon waking after my accident that I had contracted HIV, I vowed to stay strong, and to fight it.
My grandmother’s words echoed through my head as I lie there, allowing everything to ‘sink in.’ I refused to allow these conditions to define me.
Twenty years later, I am here to talk about my book, Adversity Builds Character, and to hopefully show people who you can live your life with honor and dignity even in the gravest of moments.
My tale is a personal one, but what I hope people will take from it is the message. Even when faced with the greatest of adversities, the human spirit can prevail.
Life will hit you with everything it has and will keep doing so unless you make the effort to change it. In my novel, Adversity Builds Character, I talk about my own struggles, how I came to terms with the truth over my own sexuality, and stood up to the demons of my past. I took life’s punches; I got knocked down and came back up.
I wrote Adversity Builds Character not for your pity or for your charity. In fact, I donate a portion of every sale to a number of charities that are of a personal significance to me. No, I wrote my book to show it can be done. To tell others out there who are fighting their own battles that they are not alone. There is always a reason to push on. Big or small, every personal confrontation is of the ultimate importance to the one struggling against it
Thank you.

When Life Gets in the Way

It has been a very strange week! I am now in my 37th week of pregnancy, and officially I could expect to go into labour at any time. My daughter was born at 38 weeks, and so I am becoming increasingly nervous and excited with every twinge, every cramp, and every strange sensation I feel in my stomach and lower body.

I really feel I have bonded with this pregnancy experience more than I did with my first, and it has been a wonderful adventure. Now I am ready to receive my baby, and I crave the newborn in my arms. I also want to be able to pick up my daughter and sit her on my lap properly again, instead of constantly reminding her to be careful with Mummy’s tummy.

When Life Gets in the Way

My husband, however, managed to give me a shock on Monday. I cannot give too much detail, suffice to say he had an accident while at work. It involved machinery, there is now an investigation underway, and he is at home with 11 stitches in his left arm, swelling and muscle damage. I  got the phone call late in the afternoon on the day it happened, and was informed that my husband was waiting for an ambulance. I then had to dispatch our daughter to our neighbour’s house, and call on my sister for a lift to the hospital, which happened to be 30 miles away from home, in the city where my husband works.

I haven’t yet properly acknowledged the severity of his accident. I think I am so focused on expecting my new baby, and trying to keep up a normal routine for my toddler, that I am literally running on auto mode. My husband was extremely lucky to come away with his arm mostly intact. He will  heal fairly soon, he has no tendon or bone damage, and the whole incident has been an important lesson for him and his work colleagues. The impact will be widely felt throughout the company it seems. It could have been a lot worse. He could have lost more than his arm, and that is something I have yet to process.

I will now be Nurse and Mother

For now, I am happy to have him at home (even though I have to be nurse as well as mother), and to enjoy some family time while we can. I am sort of expecting my baby to make a move this weekend, so if I go quiet online, that might explain it! Of course, the baby might yet decide it is comfortable in my womb, and it may even be late. Who knows? Life is a challenge at the moment, but it is exciting and never a dull moment.

The Challenge of the Stay at Home Mom

I recently found time to catch up on reading a few magazines that I subscribe to. I was intrigued by a snippet in the May edition of Mother and Baby magazine.

It said that according to a recent survey (carried out by Warburtons), between 7:17am and 8:30am, busy mums tackle almost ten different challenges. This is more than double the amount carried out by senior executives in the first hour of their working day. Not very surprising, but it made me feel good. In fact, I felt quite proud of myself for the achievements.

The Challenge of the Stay at Home Mom

The issue of being a stay at home mum is very prevalent right now. This year we celebrate the centenary of the suffragette movement, there is pressure on high-ranking businesses to employ more female executives, and of course, there is a royal baby expected in the middle of July. I am still bemused that I managed to fall pregnant at around the same time as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, even though I am not especially a follower of the royal family. Still, it makes my pregnancy all the more memorable!

I am a stay at home mother. I am also a working mother. My work is my writing, but I cannot develop it into a fully sustainable business until my children are older and I can get into a regular and workable routine. Our household income is purely from my husband, who works long hours and several days per week at the moment, beginning anywhere between 4am and 7am, and not finishing until 8pm or 9pm. We had to give up my car to reduce costs, and so I only have access to the family car when my husband is off work. Or, on occasion, I can take him to work and collect him, but it is a hefty commute and I don’t generally like to be up and around that early in the morning.

Daily achievements of the mother

Returning to the aforementioned survey, I totally understand the achievements that mothers manage every morning. I remember when my daughter was newborn, how I began to get quite dispirited because I never got dressed before midday, and most days passed in a blur of mucky nappies, breastfeeding, cuddling a crying baby, and trying to find time for eating and sleeping. It was even an achievement if I managed to have a shower during those first weeks, and that is something I am approaching with a little trepidation as my second child prepares for birth.

How different will my routine be with a baby and a toddler? I am still breastfeeding my two year-old, though not as frequently as before, so it will be interesting to see how she reacts to sharing her mother’s milk with a sibling. My daughter is almost fully potty trained now, and she took to it very well, so hopefully that particular issue won’t cause too many problems. I have decided to resort to Internet grocery shopping in the beginning, until I figure out how to navigate a supermarket with two small children and a pushchair.

Making sacrifices for our children

And as for my writing? Well, that is another sacrifice I will make because despite the stress of being a parent, I wouldn’t have my life any other way. OK, I will happily accept a hefty book deal from a big publisher, and maybe some movie rights for the Redcliffe novels… There is plenty of time left to achieve all of these targets!

Today I Will Mostly Walk Like a Penguin

No, I am not going crazy (at least, that’s what my invisible friends tell me)! I am now approaching my final weeks of pregnancy, and what a strange one it has been.

I really don’t remember as much from my first pregnancy, or perhaps I was just distracted by the completion and submission to publishers of my debut novel. I don’t know.

Whatever the reason, my second pregnancy has really been a cause for confusion, intrigue and a curious delight as I experienced every twinge, every ache, every swollen limb and lots more.

Today I Will Mostly Walk Like a Penguin

The reason for my title is because I have noticed a change in my walking habits. At almost 36 weeks pregnant, and expecting my baby to arrive any time now since my first child was born 2 weeks early, my body is struggling to cope with the weight. I am not a big person anyway. At just over 5’ tall, my husband affectionately calls me his ‘midget.’ Looking at me from behind, you wouldn’t even tell I was pregnant, according to my family and friends. And these are the reasons why my body has struggled to carry an ever-increasing burden of a growing baby.

I have found that whenever I stand up, I walk like a penguin for a while before I can right myself and regain my balance. You know what I mean. I sort of sway from side to side, and waddle around, creaking and groaning as I move. It must be quite amusing to watch, but it is very awkward and just a little painful. I also noticed that I was waddling up the road on my way home from the shops recently. I’m sure that’s an attractive sight for fellow pedestrians and people in passing vehicles! Especially when I have to push my daughter’s stroller up the hill, and I have to adopt a sort of leaning forward, huffing and puffing gait because I have no extra strength left.

A pregnancy of pain and humour

Yes, this pregnancy has been a cause for both pain and humour. I have loved every moment of carrying my growing baby, but my favourite times have been the recent ones where I can physically see my belly bounce up and down as the baby kicks and wriggles. This child is very active, which is fantastic, but also warns me that I am about to be run ragged by two little monkeys when I find myself home alone with the children and dog…Happy days!

Everybody Needs Good Neighbours

Sorry if I have put the famous Australian soap opera theme tune into your head, but I couldn’t resist! This is just a little message to say thank you to my wonderful neighbours, Gail and Charles Wilkinson and their daughter Mollie, for all the support and friendship they continue to give to me, my husband and daughter.

I like to show appreciation for people and things, and often I do not know quite how to show it properly. Well, I am a writer, I have a platform, I might as well use it!

Everybody Needs Good Neighbours

I love my neighbours. They are supportive, helpful, and always there if we need them. It is great to know that I have back-up babysitters at short notice, and of course, that me and my husband can offer the same favour if needed. Our families do not live close enough for frequent visits, although they are only a short car journey away. In the 21st century we seem to have lost a lot of the community spirit that was so well documented throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Back in those days people didn’t move away from home very often, or if they did, it was only by a few streets at most. Communities revolved around family units, where parents, grandparents, children, aunts, uncles and cousins could see each other frequently.

Our family units have changed now. We rely more on friends, and often we make those friends when we move into new towns and cities. It was the same for me and my husband. We moved into our town about 7 years ago, and we didn’t know anybody here. It is a commuter town, ideally placed next to the M6 motorway, with transport links to Chester, Manchester, Liverpool and Stoke-on-Trent. That was the reason for our move. Both my husband and I were working full time jobs in Manchester, but we couldn’t afford to buy a house in the city, at least not in a place where we felt comfortable. So we moved out to a small rural canal town, and we love it here!

A wonderful relationship

Anyway, I digress. We have developed a wonderful relationship with our next door neighbours, and for that I am eternally grateful and appreciative. We are also fortunate to be friendly with other neighbours on our street, although not as personally close to them. We live in a nice, quiet, friendly neighbourhood. It is a great place to raise our children, and I look forward to many more happy years ahead. Thank you, Gail and Charles!

The Duchess Considers Hypnobirthing: I Totally Advocate It!

I have just reached 34 weeks in my pregnancy, and so my thoughts are turning towards the impending birth, the agony of labour, and the fact that I haven’t prepared anything for my baby yet, whoops!

Actually, I feel quite relaxed about the whole thing. My daughter was born after a labour of approximately 13 hours, and although it ended in a forceps delivery and episiotomy (which I do not wish to suffer again), I felt pretty good about the whole experience.

The Duchess Considers Hypnobirthing: I Totally Advocate It!

While I was pregnant for my first time, I attended pregnancy yoga classes. They were fabulous. Not only did they give me a couple of hours of ‘me’ time once a week in the company of other women with shared experiences, but they prepared me for labour. The teacher is a wonderful lady who was very relaxed, helpful and taught from experience. Alongside the women-only classes, I took my husband to a couple of workshops designed to prepare us for the labour itself, and my husband enjoyed that opportunity to be involved and learn about his role in the process.

I don’t know much about hypnobirthing, but an article in the Huffington Post caught my attention. Apparently the Duchess of Cambridge is considering hypnobirthing for her royal delivery. It sounds very similar to the yoga breathing exercises I used during labour. There is no mystery and magic about natural labour. We have become a society where we focus only on pain and discomfort. We forget that the more we focus on pain, the more we feel it. Our mind and body will manifest whatever we think about the most, whether that be a delightful experience, or a difficult one. This concept might be hard to accept if you are a person that has suffered negative experiences, but it is something I believe in wholeheartedly.

In agony with pregnancy contractions

When my waters broke, I was nervous, and when my contractions started, I was in agony. There is no other way to describe it. However, rather than waste all my energy screaming and shouting, I calmed my mind by breathing deeply and I focused on letting the contractions run their course. It didn’t take away the pain, but it did help me to work through it calmly and effectively. Once I was in established labour, my husband took charge of playing the meditation CDs I had chosen for the event, he helped me to count down my breathing patterns, and he was on hand to offer food and drink throughout. In fact, I couldn’t have done it without him. He may not realise this, but he was a key factor in helping me through what is a painful and intense process.

Ultimately, we women have lots of choices for giving birth here in the Western world. We are very lucky to have the facilities of decent hospitals, specialist birthing centres, and the option for home birth if we prefer. My midwife has suggested I try a water birth for my second baby, or even a home birth, but personally it doesn’t appeal to me. My hospital is easily accessible, and I would rather give birth in the hospital than at home, more for the practicalities than anything. My husband has said that this time he is choosing our music, because my daughter appeared to fall asleep during labour, which is why the surgeons had to intervene. Apparently now we will have no relaxation music, but we might have a bit of heavy metal… oh dear!

A FAB Weekend at the Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival

It has been another beautiful weekend! I have done no work, but that doesn’t matter, because instead I took time out with family and friends to enjoy the annual Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival. I love this event, and have attended every year since we moved to Middlewich back in 2006 (I think).

This year it seemed bigger and busier than ever, and the atmosphere was amazing. We saw lots of brightly coloured boats, both vintage and new, we enjoyed the dancing and music, and we browsed the assorted stalls selling anything from handcrafted wooden trinkets, to ethical clothing, to handbags made from recycled pallet straps.

A FAB Weekend at the Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival

I love the week leading up to the Folk and Boat festival. It is great fun walking along the canal on our daily constitutional and seeing the boats arrive. This year there was a boat selling sweets, which I enjoyed immensely! I also like watching the construction of the marquees around town, because the atmosphere is excitable and anticipatory. The whole town comes alive. There are posters in all the shop windows, bunting strung out across the streets, and lots of activity around the town wharf, the canal, and the festival field.

This weekend was a bit more difficult for me in my heavily pregnant state, but we managed. Fortunately I had plenty of people to help out! We enjoyed the Rose fete parade on Saturday morning, and my 2 year-old daughter was intrigued with the brightly coloured dresses worn by the girls in the procession. I enjoyed watching the Morris dancers come past, but my poor dog was frightened by the Black Stone Crows when they ran at the audience as part of their performance. It was very funny to watch my ‘big hard Staffie’ jump and hide behind Mummy’s legs!

Great community spirit

All in all, it was another fabulous weekend. This is what I love especially about living in Middlewich, Cheshire. The town has a great community spirit, and there are always various activities happening that bring people together. The Folk and Boat festival is our biggest annual event. There are also less frequent events like the Roman festival, the military festival, the transport festival, and odd community events hosted by the churches and local organisations throughout the year. My aim is to become more involved with these events as my children grown older, because I love an excuse to dress up and indulge in some local heritage celebration.
