What Will You Be When You Grow Up?

This is a question that echoes in my mind almost every day. It has become something of a mantra I suppose, and I am not even conscious of it most of the time.

What will you be when you grow up? Join the conversation here at SpookyMrsGreen.com and let’s see who has already chosen their career path, and who is still learning what they want to be when they grow up.

What will you be when you grow up?

What Will You Be When You Grow Up?

When I was at school I was constantly told by the ‘grown-ups’ that I must choose a career and work towards achieving that. There could only be one job for me apparently. I wanted to be an author when I was young, but as I grew older I lacked confidence in my abilities and so I abandoned that plan. Then I wanted to be a TV broadcaster. More specifically I wanted to become a presenter on the children’s television channel Nickelodeon. I watched this channel all through my teenage years and into my early twenties whenever I returned home during university holidays. Then I moved into my own place and couldn’t afford Sky TV.

Keeping in mind my career aspiration, I chose to study Media at college and then went on to do a university degree in Film and Media Studies. I freely admit now that I went off the rails a bit while at college and my A-Level results were subsequently very poor by my high standards. I barely scraped through because I would skive off from lessons and spent a lot of time in the local pub playing pool with my friends. There were other factors involved of which I need not describe here, suffice to say it was a time of me being the ‘rebellious teenager’ and finding my place in the world.

The ‘burger bar’ degree

Moving on to university and I was very naïve in my choice of educational establishment. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved my time at University of Wales, Lampeter (now renamed as Trinity St David’s university). It is a beautiful small town hidden in mid Wales. But therein lies the problem. The only way in and out of town was via bus or car, and the bus journey was convoluted since it travelled through lots of small villages and remote countryside before reaching either Aberystwyth or Carmarthen depending on which direction wanted to travel. I didn’t have my own car at the time, so it was a very insular existence. We also didn’t have social media back then, and I was still learning about the internet and what I could do with it.

I quickly gave up on my plans to be a TV broadcaster when I realised that I am just not that kind of person. I am naturally very quiet and shy, and I struggle to articulate my feelings. I am one of those people that thinks of the perfect response to a discussion about half an hour after the event. I certainly could not fill airtime with pointless chatter or cheerful anecdotes, and I am not very good at giving interviews. I worry about being too nosy with people. No, I am far better suited to being a writer. If only I had known this sooner and had the confidence to pursue it, I might already be an international bestseller by now. But that was clearly not my path to take.

Why should we choose to be one thing?

My observation here is all about the idea that we can only be one thing in this world. We have to be a ‘successful’ career person, with lots of money and high status in big business, in order to be perceived as anything of worth by our peers. I don’t know when this pattern was first developed, but I do know that is has been in place for centuries. It is only during the past one hundred years that women have begun to assert their place in this business world, and to step out from the domestic world of our genetic heritage. I love being a mother. I am not so keen on being a housewife. I love being a writer. Nowadays, I do not classify myself as one thing or another, although when filling out official forms I have to put ‘unemployed’ or ‘stay at home mother’ because that is my main (albeit unpaid) profession.

Why must we be defined only by our place of work or the job that we do? So many people do so many things, and it has taken me almost 30 years to learn this fact. I know people who work in retail or administration and they enjoy their jobs, even though they are considered fairly lowly in the hierarchy. For these people the joy in life comes from their personal interests. They might have hobbies such as sports, arts, music or volunteering. They might be the people that organise festivals and events in their communities, but they are never recognised because it doesn’t earn them any money. When will we change this mindset, and when will we teach our children that they can do lots of different things with their lives? I intend to do it now, while my daughters are very young. They can do and be whatever they want, but I will teach them the basic premise of right and wrong as I perceive it. That is ultimately all we can do.

Book Signing and Breastfeeding: All in a Day’s Work!

Last weekend I officially launched my new novel “The Darkness of Love.” I didn’t have a big fancy launch party or anything, mainly because I simply haven’t had the time to organize such an event what with having a baby only three months ago and being a work at home mother of two young children plus dog.

Anyway, the event took place in my local café, Drinks and Bites at 35, and I want to say a big thank you to Holly and Gemma for very kindly offering up some space and time for me to occupy in order to launch my new book.

Book Signing and Breastfeeding: All in a Day’s Work!

I planned the event on my husband’s day off from work, so that he could care for the children in my absence. He works shifts, so everything has to be planned around his rota. I thought he would drop me off and be my ‘hired muscle’ for carrying books, but he decided to stick around for the whole three hours, and it was quite nice. A little support from your loved ones goes a long way, as I am learning from experience during my adventures into being a career writer with domestic responsibilities. The only downside was that my baby needed to be fed while we were out and we had left a bottle of expressed breastmilk in the fridge at home, since I had expected my husband to return home with the girls after leaving me. I hope I didn’t put off too many people when I sat behind my book desk with a baby attached to me!

It was lovely to see so many of my friends as well, and a big thank you goes out to you guys, you know who you are! While the event was fairly small and quiet, we at least got me out from behind the computer and into the public domain. I am venturing out, putting myself before the people, and waiting for my adoring audience to assemble and realise the genius of my Redcliffe novels series. Yes, I am confident in the quality of my work. I am a damn good writer, and I know that. Now I just need to show other people, and wait for the old fashioned word-of-mouth marketing technique to pay off. I’m not very good at waiting for things to happen, but I am learning to be…

National Novel Writing Month (again)

Right now I am in the throes of writer passion as I once again participate in National Novel Writing Month. So far I have only written 4000 words, which gives me an estimated finish date somewhere in the middle of December. It may take a few sleepless nights, lots of convenience food for family meals, and my being practically a recluse for a few weeks, but I am determined to succeed. Redcliffe book 4 must be written. It is now or never!

Introducing Dan Weatherer Horror Author

Today I have the pleasure of showcasing the work of a fellow local author, Dan Weatherer. He writes horror stories and is from my part of the UK, the Staffordshire Moorlands, and we even crossed paths when we both worked at the famous Alton Towers theme park back in our younger days!

Dan Weatherer’s debut horror collection The Soul That Screamed discusses the curiosity of man. Whether exploring the origins of local legend or dabbling with the dark arts, the unforeseen and often terrifying effects of our ignorant actions are laid bare inside.

Tales that include the terrifying origins of a mysterious chained Oak, a pensioner with murderous intentions, a young girl lost in death , the ignorance of a charlatan, a box that should remain unopened, a misguided pact with a demon, a cave harbouring a gruesome secret and more lay within these pages of Dan Weatherer’s debut collection The Soul That Screamed.

Being a Housewife is Hard Work

You might have a little understanding of where my mind is at the moment, based on recent blog posts. I am totally immersed in motherhood, and I find that it naturally connects with the traditional idea of being a housewife. This is where I begin to squirm.

I do not like calling myself a housewife, and I always used to say that I would never become one. The role seemed boring, unrewarding, and indeed, under-appreciated, and so that would never be my place in life. Oh how the tables have turned!

Being a Housewife is Hard Work

I am now fully ensconced as a housewife, and get this, it was my choice! What compelled me to give up a full-time paid office job and stay at home with no income to call my own? Initially I cut down to part time work in retail, to free up time for my writing before I published my novels. Then I got pregnant and we started our family. It seemed natural therefore that I would stay at home with the children while my husband continued to work full time and develop his career. After all, I could never earn the same money as him doing the jobs I was able to obtain. My career is developing far more slowly, but at least it is developing, and I am proud of my achievements so far.

But back to the housewife issue. This article was prompted by a piece I found on the website of the UK newspaper The Telegraph. It is a reliable broadsheet newspaper with a reputation for decent journalism. I find it quite amusing that there is a specific section on the website entitled ‘Women.’ I suppose it is a compliment really, that women get a whole section of newspaper space dedicated to topics of their interest. Or is it? To be discussed…

Do mummies work?

The article I read was originally written in March 2013 and I found it quite by accident. Its title is Mind the career gap: The scheme helping mothers return to the City. Apparently the Bank of America is running free workshops for mothers to enable them to return to work in the City (London to us ‘poor insignificant’ Northerners!) I think the workshops sound really good actually, a great opportunity for networking and a chance for women to feel validated again.

And that is my problem with the whole title of ‘housewife.’ Despite women’s liberation, the feminist movement, and any number of high profile media campaigns throughout the last century, women are still considered to be second-class citizens if they don’t work full time outside of the home. Never mind the hours we spend nurturing our children, cleaning our homes, organizing our families, and all the associated tasks and chores. None of this is important apparently. We do not work, unless we work for someone else or some big corporation. That is the myth of the housewife.

One line in particular struck me in the Telegraph article: One of the mothers interviewed said that her four year-old daughters asked, “Do mummies work?”

Enough said.

Meditation for Busy Mothers (or Fathers)

I would like to share a little advice about meditation when you have small children. This is something I am just learning to deal with. I got into meditation several years ago when I properly embraced my spiritual path.

I used to think that to meditate properly you had to sit on an upright chair in a quiet room, perhaps with some soft music playing or a guidance CD, and you had to use incense and crystals to enhance the situation. Gradually I began to realise that this simply wasn’t true.

I began to meditate while driving home from work during rush hour, on the regular occasions when I was stuck in traffic. Those meditations would be brief but important, and I would always have a conscious connection with my responsibility to drive safely.

#WitchyWednesday Cloudy Sky over Rocks in the Sea copyright Catherine Green of SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
#WitchyWednesday Cloudy Sky over Rocks in the Sea

Meditation for Busy Mothers (or Fathers)

Now my challenge is how to maintain the meditation practice while being a mother to two small children. My eldest daughter is 2 years old. My youngest is 9 weeks. I also have a boisterous dog that needs regular walks and playtime to keep him occupied. And then there are the two pet turtles, but they only need feeding and cleaning out, nothing too strenuous. I realised during my clearing energy work over the weekend of the Dark Moon that actually I do meditate every day. I just do it a little differently than I used to.

Nowadays I will wear a crystal pendant or my pentacle necklace as a means to stay connected to Spirit and Source energy. When I have a shower, however brief it might be, I take time to be thankful for the cleansing water and the experiences I have enjoyed with my family and friends. While out for a walk I will look at the trees and plants around me, and I will connect with the river near our home by using silent greetings and salutations. Standing at the kitchen sink washing dishes, I will stare out of the window and slip into the world of Spirit, sometimes communicating with those that reside in our house. And every time I peg out washing on the line, I am aware of the air outside, the grass in our garden, and the trees behind our house.

How to meditate in a practical way

It is all very well to wear flamboyant clothes, to pile on the spiritual jewellery, and to always use an instrument, wand, staff or collection of tools to ritualise our meditations. But as a busy mother it is just not practical. I live in jeans and t-shirts, and my jewellery is minimal because my children are likely to get tangled in it and cause us all an injury.

I will save my ‘flowing gowns’ for special days when I can attend specific rituals and gatherings of my pagan brethren. But the spiritual intent, the connection with Mother Earth, and the eternal quest and thirst for more experience and knowledge; that is all within, hidden beneath my calm and composed exterior, to be demonstrated through my words and eventually and occasionally through my actions. Blessed Be, my Friends.

An Attitude of Gratitude #Mabon

I write this post during what seems like a continuous cycle of domestic stress recently. Of course I should expect it. After all, I was daft enough to get pregnant for a second time; I knew what to expect.

But of course, I forgot how demanding a newborn baby can be, and more importantly I am only now learning how even more demanding a toddler can be.

An Attitude of Gratitude

My children are central to my life. I will never deny my love for them, and I will always put them at the top of my priorities list (including the dog, who is also my child). However, that does not stop me from wanting to indulge in a little ‘me time.’ At the moment that means time to write, to network, to build a fanbase for my novels. It is a very long and slow process simply because I cannot find time to devote to the necessary work.

We recently celebrated the pagan festival Mabon. It is the second harvest and a time to give thanks for a fruitful summer, and to request a quiet and peaceful winter season where we can rest and recuperate, along with the ground from which our crops will grow. I was unable to fit in a specific ritual this time, but I did decide to do some baking, which doesn’t happen very often. I baked a delicious apple and cinnamon cake, using apples collected from a tree near the marina where my sister lives. She gifted the apples to me, and we enjoyed sharing the cake afterwards.

In closing, I would like to express my gratitude for having a wonderful, loving family. Yes I am experiencing stress and frustration, not least with my husband and children, but I love them unconditionally nonetheless and I know they love me too. Now, back to the madness…

“The Darkness of Love” by Catherine Green

Lord Gregory Stockton is a powerful and respected businessman embracing the modern era of the Victorian industrial revolution. He has a grand and beautiful manor house complete with a repertoire of servants, and his young wife is charming, attractive, and the perfect lady to his gentleman. The only thing they lack is an heir to the family estate. Lord Gregory knows he can never produce a child, for he is a vampire, although his wife and servants know nothing of his secrets. There are other ways to provide heirs for his estate, however, and Lord Gregory has noticed the romantic attraction between his wife and the young stable hand Marcus Scott. He hatches a plan to bring the would-be lovers together, and then cruelly tear them apart as he continues to build his empire and secure his power base in the south of England. The humans are pawns in the vampire’s game of lust, love and control.

Getting Back to Work

This week sees the return of the new school year for our children in the UK. For me it is the start of the preschool term for my eldest daughter, and I have to say I am glad to see it!

The summer has been a crazy time for us as we settled in to life with the new baby while trying to ensure that our eldest daughter didn’t feel neglected or forgotten. She actually told me she missed her friends at playschool, although she did see a few of them during the holidays. Anyway, now she is back and we are beginning to get back into our work routine.

Getting Back to Work

First I have an exciting announcement to make. My fourth novel, “The Darkness of Love,” will be released on 15th October, hooray! It was originally planned for release in September, but had to be postponed due to the aforementioned newborn baby. Still, since it is a Victorian vampire love story, I think it will fit nicely into the Halloween season for promotions and marketing. I will do a cover reveal shortly, and look out for updates as I embark on my media networking campaign to spread the word about this hot new paranormal romance novel…

Aside from promotions for “The Darkness of Love,” I plan to return to a manuscript I had previously stalled on while still pregnant. I am beginning to gather new ideas and plot fillers for my vampire hunter novel, so I am confident that I can rescue it from the doldrums and turn it into another masterpiece. It will just take a little time to perfect. I also plan to participate in NaNoWriMo 2013 this year, and I intend to use the challenge as a motivation to begin writing book 4 in the Redcliffe novels series. This will be an adventure, since I have no idea what is in store for Jessica, Jack and Danny on their next adventure… All I know is that it will be very exciting, dramatic, and fraught with emotion!

Day Out on the Peppa Pig Express!

We recently took a family day trip on the Peppa Pig Express Train at the Churnet Valley railway in Staffordshire.

It was a lovely day out, with nice sunny weather, and lots of activities for our elder daughter, Elliot to enjoy.

Our newborn baby, Georgina, was just 2 weeks old at the time, but she was cuddled all afternoon by her doting granddad who was able to join us for the day. Here are some of my favourite photographs:

Reusable Nappies are Easier than you Think

My husband and I decided to use washable nappies for our children. When I was pregnant with my eldest daughter, I struggled to find enough guidance and advice about how to use such nappies, and indeed which ones to use.

It was very much a trial and error process for me during her first few months, but now I am confident with the nappies, and we know what works for us. We use a combination of traditional Terry nappies, and more modern shaped ‘2-piece’ ones.

My Cloth Nappy Makes Me Happy article about how to use cloth nappies by Catherine Green for SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
My Cloth Nappy Makes Me Happy

Reusable Nappies are Easier than you Think

It was the description of ‘1-piece,’ ‘2-piece’ and even ‘3-piece’ nappies that caused much confusion for me in those early days. I had to deal with lots of leaky nappies and numerous changes of clothes and bedding as I learned by experience just exactly what I had to use, and how. Quite simply, a 1-piece nappy is one that has a built-in waterproof covering over a fleece or cloth lining. You simply put the nappy on in the same way you would a disposable and away you go. A 2-piece nappy is a cloth or fleece nappy that you have to cover with a waterproof wrap. And a 3-piece is a cloth or fleece nappy that you cover with a waterproof wrap, and you also use a separate liner inside the nappy to catch any solid mess from your baby.

There are lots of different brands to choose from, and I found this quite overwhelming. I have now settled on my personal favourites. For our newborn daughter I use Totsbots fluffy nappies, with either a Totsbots wrap or a Nature Babies one. I also use Lollipop fleece nappies, which are smaller and thinner, and easier to pop in your changing bag and use while out and about. When my daughter is a little bigger I will use Kushies nappies as well. These are the 1-piece nappies that have a waterproof cover over a cloth inner part, and again are easy when out travelling.

I like to use Terry nappies

I also use Terry nappies, which I prefer to use overnight because they provide more absorbency and last longer between changes. There are different ways you can fold a Terry nappy, and I found some instructions online when I was doing my research. I then had to ask my mum for help, and fortunately she remembered how to fold the nappies after almost 30 years, so she sorted us out! I favour the ‘newborn fold’ or the ‘kite fold’ for my children. With a Terry nappy you must remember to use a waterproof wrap, but I find that they all fit quite easily anyway so I don’t need specific types.

One issue that people seem concerned about is washing the nappies. Some people are squeamish about dealing with all the mess, and some say that surely it uses more energy because you have to use the washing machine so frequently. Actually, we wash all the nappies on a 40C cycle, and dry them on the washing line where possible because the outside air softens the fibres nicely. The sun is also a natural way to kill off any bacteria from the nappies, so it’s an added bonus. And yes, I know in the UK we don’t get much sun, but we have enough to dry our nappies in! I have a bucket with a lid in which to store the dirty nappies, and I only tend to soak them if they are particularly dirty or smelly. Usually I just ‘dry pail’ them and wash a load either every day or every other day as required.

There we go. Feel free to ask any questions or recommend your own brands of cloth nappies, or indeed share your experiences. I want to encourage more people to give up disposables and ease the burden on our waste industry (you can thank my husband for this; he is a Chartered Waste Manager).
