How to Unlock Your Potential and Stop Unhealthy Behaviours

Navigating life beyond lockdown, mental illness and building a career while coping with a chronic pain disorder.

I joined the social network for A Chronic Voice because I needed to find people who understand what life is like with chronic illness, people like me. Today I have written a post using the August link-up prompts, to show my experience of living with a chronic pain disorder.

How to Unlock Your Potential and Stop Unhealthy Behaviours

Unlocking

I feel like I am finding myself again after a very long lockdown. For me it goes way beyond the pandemic. For the past ten years I have put the needs of my extended family before my own needs and have devoted very little time to myself. My career is stuttering along, but now I am taking steps towards unlocking my potential and realizing my dreams. They are small steps, but I feel better and I know that my life is improving. It also helps that I visited the beach with my children, that we can go to our local play park, and that we have the opportunity to socialize with friends.

Limiting

My big challenge right now is childcare. I am the sole carer for my children, since my husband refuses to work flexible hours or even take annual leave. I have full care of my children 24/7, and during lockdown we were together for three solid months with no respite. Last week they spent an afternoon with their grandparents alone for the first time since March, and I felt such relief to have a few precious hours of alone time. I got so much work done! Childcare has certainly limited my job prospects and will continue to do so until the children are old enough to be left alone.

Studying

My children and I took on the challenge of training our rescue dog during lockdown, with the help of a local dog training school. He came to us with no discipline and a big attitude, and at three years old, we needed to sort it out. We have made great improvements with his recall and manners, but now he needs to understand that people are allowed to visit our house without being jumped on. That is a work in progress. In other areas, I have continued to study and practice my reiki 3rd Degree Masters course, and I have tried to do some homeschooling with my children, although that wasn’t a success. I was not destined to be a schoolteacher!

Watching

I am watching my behaviour as I navigate the challenges of having a spouse with mental illness and suspected autism. I have been reading articles online and in magazines, watching short information videos, and trying to understand why he behaves the way that he does. Ultimately, I have learned that I cannot fix him, and he doesn’t want to be fixed. Therefore, I must watch my responses and think about myself and my children first. In other news, I have been watching Supernatural on Amazon Prime for the past couple of years, and now I am told it will leave Prime on 20th August. I am currently watching season 8, and there is no way I can afford to download the remaining five series. There will be some serious binge watching in the next few days!

Healing

Right now, I am focused on healing myself. For many years I have tried to heal my husband and other family members, only to realise that they don’t want to be healed. It just left me feeling drained and broken. My reiki therapy practice has taught me that we can only truly heal ourselves. We can use our connection to Source Energy to ease the pain and discomfort that other people might feel, but they will never truly recover unless they do the work for themselves. I am healing myself internally, and then I will be strong enough to support those around me that are ready to heal themselves.

#MoonpigMoments: Flower Arranging and Cocktail Making Masterclass

How to plan the perfect summer birthday party for your friends and family.

I recently had the pleasure of joining Moonpig in an online masterclass event where I learned about flower arranging and cocktail making. My fellow bloggers and I received some fabulous goodies to work with, including a luxurious Summer Bouquet and birthday balloons from Moonpig, a lovely birthday gift, and the ingredients and equipment to make some delicious summer cocktails.

A couple of days after the event we celebrated my younger daughter’s seventh birthday, and her friends were delighted when I made “mocktails” for their tea party!

#MoonpigMoments: Flower Arranging and Cocktail Making Masterclass

Jasper from Moonpig walked us through the Moonpig app and the features for personalising our birthday cards. Some features are sadly only available on iOS now but will hopefully be available on Android soon. I am an Android user so I was quite upset that I couldn’t use the awesome feature where you can visualise a card on your table using your phone. There is also a feature where you can write your own personalised message using an iOS tablet, again something I don’t have access to but would love to play around with.

Showing someone you care doesn’t have to be complicated. Moonpig makes being thoughtful super easy and convenient because you can craft the perfect birthday card wherever, whenever, with just a couple of clicks. I have friends in Australia and found Moonpig the perfect place to send cards from, as they always arrive on time and are very easy to order.

Over 10,000 cards to choose from

The Moonpig range of 10,000+ cards and intricate filters means you can easily find the perfect one to create that wow-factor. And when you add a heartfelt message inside that will blow them away, you’re giving them something nonpareil, something extraordinary.

If you use the Moonpig app you can get a limited time special offer. The code to use at check out (only possible via the app) is APP30ORDER and it gives you 30% off a card and a gift when buying together. The promotion ends on 26th August.

Cocktails Masterclass

James from Mix & Twist held the cocktail masterclass and here are the ingredients for each cocktail. Moonpig sells the vodka we used as part of their gift offering. Other spirits are available as well.

Summer Garden – 45ml Vodka, 25ml lime, 25ml sugar syrup, mint leaves, cucumber, 25ml elderflower soda – this was my favourite cocktail from the collection!

Strawberry Fizz – 45ml Vodka, 25ml lemon, 25ml sugar syrup, soda, strawberries, lemon

Passionfruit Martini – 45ml Vodka, 20ml lemon, 25ml passionfruit syrup, 60ml pineapple juice – I loved the fancy Martini glass we used for this one!

Flower Masterclass

Roxanne from Moonpig held the flower arranging class. Most of what she mentioned was be in the care booklet that came with my flowers. I really enjoyed the flower arranging class as I got to be creative but also learned some useful tips on how to preserve my flowers and keep them looking fabulous. You can see the range of Moonpig flowers and plants here.

Flowers are strongly tied to birthdays. Given our current situation, Moonpig want to remind people that something as simple as sending a birthday bouquet can be enough to totally change someone’s day. No matter the occasion, a bouquet’s job is to cheer people up, make people feel calm and add positivity. I completely agree with this, as I have made a point of displaying fresh flowers in my living room during lockdown to cheer me up on dark days. They make me smile, they brighten the room, and they smell wonderful!

Birthday Celebrations During Lockdown

This week we celebrate some very special birthdays. My elder daughter’s friends Sam and Mackenzie celebrate their ninth birthdays this week, and my younger daughter, Georgina, is seven on Saturday. She is very excited about her birthday, and while we couldn’t arrange a big party like we normally would, we have managed to plan a small tea party at home and a day trip to one of her favourite places, the Blue Planet Aquarium. Despite it being a rather low-key birthday this year, I have still been running around like crazy as I prepare her celebrations. I have bought birthday cards and gifts, wrapped the gifts, organised gifts from family members, baked birthday cake and cookies, stocked up on her favourite party snacks, and sourced balloons in her favourite colour. She has asked me to wear a dress on her birthday, instead of my usual jeans, which I think is rather cute. We are planning a special Mummy-Daughter-Daughter day out. Precious memories just waiting to be made! Happy Birthday, children. You are all amazing.

Tarot Reading: Leaving the Past Behind

Here is a Tarot reading to help you leave the past behind. Maybe you seek guidance around a challenging series of events. Perhaps you have decided to move on from a situation, but you need confirmation and a guiding hand. Here it is!

Tarot Reading – Leaving the Past Behind by Catherine Green

Tarot Reading: Leaving the Past Behind

1, What I Need to Leave Behind Me

Eight of Cups – “Leave those who would live in the dark and look towards the light.” You have been used and abused by people who claim to love you. Now you emerge emotionally exhausted, and yet you feel free. Cast off those chains and leave the dark-dwellers behind. You are a being of light.

2, What I Need to Take with Me

Death – Everything is temporary. You have learned a lot, grown and gained wisdom through your life experiences. Take the memories, good and bad, and prepare for new beginnings. Now it is time for your next adventure.

3, Negatives to Discard

The Empress – Sometimes you try to seek deep and meaningful answers to your problems. Remember that not all people are old souls. Some people are deeply embedded in someone else’s story. Some people do not dare seek a life beyond the physical. They will not share your journey. Leave them behind as you continue to grow.

4, Positives to Look Forward To

Ten of Cups – Your peaceful, happy place does exist, and you will find it. While you feel drained and exhausted now, you will soon settle down into a new routine, and it will feel safe and calm. Make peace with yourself and you will forget about those who hurt you. Spend time with those who really care about you.

5, Why a Fresh Start will be Good for Me

The Magician – You are a being with many gifts, and the magic is right there at your fingertips. Are you ready to unleash the beast? Let’s have some fun!

Why Self Care is Important when your Spouse is Depressed

Why Self Care is Important when your Spouse is Depressed

Bothering

For the past few months, my Chronic Voice blog posts have been decidedly depressing. Following a minor health scare in June, I was prompted to sit back and look at myself. I realized that I had not bothered about my self-care for an awfully long time, even for years before the pandemic. I had purposely kept myself busy with work and social activities, so that I could ignore the problems with my marriage. Now I have decided I need to bother more about myself.

Demanding

Life is demanding. I have two children under the age of 10, and while my daughters are incredibly resourceful and mature for their age, they still need physical and emotional care and attention. We adopted a rescue dog late last year, who it turns out is also high maintenance. During lockdown I was prompted to enroll on a dog training course, but we had to do the work at home with guidance from the instructor via social media. And then are the demands of my eye care. My chronic disease flares up routinely as the eyelashes insist on growing back in the wrong places, and I have to epilate myself (remove the ingrowing eyelashes with tweezers). It is a painful and frustrating task, and I do it at least once a week.

Nourishing

Once I realized what had dominated my time recently (an absent husband), I decided to change my attitudes. He will not go away. He will not change his behaviour. But I can change my mood. I returned to my reiki meditation practice. I got my children back into school for the last 4 weeks of summer term, and I enrolled in an online super conference where I could meet new practitioners and learn new attitudes towards mental and emotional self-care. As we approach school summer holidays and the prospect of being mostly alone, my daughters and I will do what nourishes us. We will play together, relax together, meet up with family and friends on limited occasions, and find our happy place.

Telecommunicating

I admit I am getting a little tired of conducting my social life via Zoom! Back in April my friends and I tried to do some family activities, and we tried to keep in touch, but gradually we all lost interest in telecommunications. Our lives are still busy as we struggle to work from home, cope with emergencies and crises, and find a new “normal” in the wake of the pandemic. We all agreed that we will keep in touch via our group messaging app, but we much prefer meeting in person when conditions allow. That said, I am incredibly grateful for the power of telecommunications, because they stopped me from losing the plot during my 3-month isolation. They kept my children in touch with their friends, and I was able to continue working and socializing under limited conditions. I will continue to rely on Zoom during the summer holidays, but I truly hope that our social venues can start to reopen in September.

Tolerating

What am I tolerating? Pain, and lots of it. I tolerate physical pain every day with my sore eyes and ingrowing eyelashes. I tolerate emotional pain resulting from my marriage breakdown. My husband refuses to separate despite working 100+ hours per week through choice. And I have nowhere else to go. I have explored all my options and decided that I am still happy at home with my children, and we can all tolerate this situation for a while longer. We are resilient, and we choose to be happy.

Daily Tarot Reading for My Life

Today I share a Tarot reading for my life situation. The past few months have been the culmination of a very trying cycle of events, and a few weeks ago I literally felt that I had reached rock bottom in terms of my relationship and my place in life. I was spent. I was exhausted. I was beaten.

Despite my best efforts, nothing seemed to work. My children were fed up and lonely in lockdown, my husband has abandoned us in favour of work, and my career is stuttering and stalling after it seemed to pick up last year. I needed help.

And just like that, the fates intervened, my spirit guides made their presence felt, and I found my way towards a healing process. It will take time, but I feel better already.

Daily Tarot Reading for My Life by Catherine Green

Daily Tarot Reading : What is my direction in life right now?

1, Works – Ace of Swords

This is the beginning of a new phase in your professional life. Forget what has passed, and accept that you are strong, and you are more than capable of meeting this challenge. Embrace both your masculine and feminine energies because you will succeed only if you acknowledge that they must work together. This is not a power battle. This is a team effort.

2, Home – Page of Wands

If you accept that you are entering a new phase in your life, then please also accept the challenges faced by those around you. They are being pushed way out of their comfort zone and made to face new responsibilities that they have so far managed to avoid. Perhaps you could be their guide, not their punisher. You are the compassionate being in this scenario.

3, Unexpected – Knight of Swords

The battle is not over yet, but then you already know that. Nothing about the pandemic has been easy, and it’s not just the health threat. Do not assume you must automatically go into fight mode. It is not as bad as it seems, certainly when you compare it to what you have battled before.

4, Your Role – Ace of Pentacles

You are the garden; life-giving, beautiful, and peaceful. You are the place where people retreat when the world is too difficult. They know that you hold a higher knowledge and a wisdom that goes beyond the mundane. Allow them to rest and share your wisdom when it feels right to do so.

5, Outcome – Two of Wands

There is life beyond your fortress, and finally you catch a glimpse of the infinite possibility for travel. Whether that is physical or ethereal remains to be seen. Perhaps you would benefit from venturing out into the world again. I heard a song when I viewed this card, and I’m sure many of you will know how it sounds. I have changed the “He” to a “She,” so it fits my perspective. “She’s got the whole world in Her hands, She’s got the whole world in Her hands…”

This Tarot reading resonates with me

Today’s Tarot card reading clearly resonates with me and my place in life, but I hope that you will find some guidance as well. We are all on the same path ultimately, we just choose different directions and experiences. We are all the same, deep down, regardless of how we feel about each other. I need to heal my emotional wounds and stop my ego from ruling the roost. I need to remember my Self, my truth, and my place in the universe, not just in my little corner of the world. What do you need to remember, and how will you set about healing from your recent traumas?

Find Your Way during Dark Times #WATWB

We Are the World BlogFest (#WATWB) celebrates special people and small stories of inspiration and hope in the world. Let’s face it, we need some inspiration and hope during this time of pandemic and social distancing.

I admit this month I am struggling to find a good news story I want to share with the world. I try to keep my news features relevant to me and my readers, covering local events and activities. Somehow, I am not feeling a sense of community with the wider world right now. Maybe that’s a reflection of my current mental state, which is fragile. Maybe I am beaten down by the people I have tried to help but who just don’t want to be helped.

Find Your Way during Dark Times #WATWB

I have decided I must return to my inward self. I cannot help those who refuse to help themselves. There are lots of people I know who are struggling with challenges. They are grieving, they are trying to keep a job and income for their family, they are coping with life-changing medical conditions and new diagnoses. Fortunately, my close circle of friends is always cheerful, even on the bad days. We rant to each other, we complain about the things we cannot change, we exchange virtual hugs, and then we move on. We always find something to smile about.

This week I sent my children back to school against my better judgement. I was not coping alone at home, and I needed some support. They are happier, and I now have time to take care of my personal health and the challenge that is my broken marriage. A friend gave me a couple of magazines that she thought I might find helpful. It was a small gesture, but it made a massive difference to me on a day when I felt totally alone. It means that people care. This friend hasn’t seen me for a long time, but she cared enough to ask why I had taken my children back to school, and she cared enough to offer a little something that might help me find my way. There is hope in these dark times. We just have to welcome it.

When Doctors don’t know what’s Wrong

I am a medical mystery. All my life I have lived with a chronic disease called Lymphedema Distichiasis.

It took many years for my parents to get a proper diagnosis, and my younger brother has the same condition. It is congenital. Oddly, our sister does not have the disease, nor has she ever exhibited symptoms. We were born with it.

Living with Undiagnosed Illness by SpookyMrsGreen.com pagan lifestyle blog.
Living with Undiagnosed Illness

When Doctors don’t know what’s Wrong

My illness manifests in the eyes. I regularly remove ingrowing eyelashes that grow on the wrong part of the eyelid and scratch the cornea. I use a selection of daily eye drops and ointments to soothe the pain of old scars, inflammation, blepharitis, and severe Dry Eye Syndrome. It is horrible. Living with undiagnosed illness causes a lot of mental and emotional stress, and when I was younger, this was not a consideration. I was expected to live a normal life, because I wasn’t really ill, never mind the fact that most of the time I couldn’t see clearly. The medical profession had no idea of the complexities of my congenital disease, and it is only in recent years that doctors have listened to my feelings and emotions regarding the situation. There is still a long way to go, and there will never be a cure for this. It hurts, in more ways than the physical.

Last week I took myself to hospital on doctor’s advice when I woke up with severe chest pain one morning. I thought it was stress. The doctors thought differently. They were concerned about my rapid heartbeat and the results they saw from my blood tests. They sent me for a CT scan. They discovered a nodule in my lung cavity. It looks benign and I don’t have any underlying health symptoms that would be connected to it. My congenital condition is completely separate, according to the doctors. They have requested advice from external agencies because they don’t want to interfere medically if that could potentially make me ill. I am left wondering what to do now. They wanted to admit me to hospital last week but decided I was safer at home due to the risk of contracting Covid-19. I was not specifically told to rest, and there is no medication because there is nothing to treat. All I have is a bit of mild pain and the sensation of a bubble in my chest when I breathe in. I don’t know how long it has been there, or if it has changed in size recently, causing the pain I experienced.

Message from my body

I have decided that this is a message from my body that I need to accept. No one knows what’s wrong with me. It would take a long time to explain almost twenty years of being with a man who professes to love me but has no idea how to care for me. There are personal issues, a broken family, unrecognised trauma from many years ago, and probably a lot more stuff that I have yet to uncover in my quest for optimum health. I have decided to take a holistic approach to health. It won’t take medicine, or a surgical procedure, or even a prolonged period of rest to make me better. I need to change my diet, my exercise plan, my daily lifestyle habits. I need to stop giving all of myself to people that give nothing or very little in return. I need to practice self-care. And that is what I’m going to do. Who is with me on this exciting journey towards good health and acceptance of what we cannot influence?

Craft Activities for Kids #CraftingWithViking

Do you need suggestions for simple craft ideas with household items?

We are deep into our third month in lockdown here in the UK, and trust me, I am feeling the strain of keeping the children entertained at home. Never mind the fact that they get bored easily, they eat everything in sight, and they have so much pent-up energy, but now we have to give them something to do!

Craft Activities for Kids

We had all but used up our craft stash, and then I had an email from Viking Direct. I have heard of Viking office supplies, but I didn’t realise that they offer so much more for the home office and home school. Viking Direct sell stationery and craft supplies (we got Sharpies!), and most important right now, they sell cleaning products. If you are like me, and you refused to join the madness of hoarding toilet rolls and hand sanitiser back in April, you are probably still searching for supplies. You can order them from Viking Direct!

Online Craft Event

I was incredibly pleased to receive a box full of goodies from Viking Direct that we were going to use in an online craft event. The workshop was hosted by Jane from Tea & Crafting, and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We made toilet roll dragons, bubble wrap chocolate and moving feet using packaging tape! It was awfully hard not to eat the Aero chocolate bars that were included, but I hid them in the salad drawer in the fridge, so we still had them in time for the Zoom event. Jane led the workshop very well and we will try these crafts again, maybe on a rainy day. Here is the list of craft projects, with instructions so you can try them at home:

Three Great Craft Activities for Kids from Viking

Finding activities to keep the kids entertained that don’t involve a games console or staring at television can be tough. At Viking, we’ve got three great ideas to beat the boredom with crafty and creative ideas.

Fire Breathing Dragon

  1. Clean your working area and wash your hands or use some hand sanitiser before starting.
  2. Take a sheet of A4 paper. Measure how high your toilet roll tube is and then cut a strip of paper along the long side of the A4 using that measurement.
  3. Spread glue over your toilet roll holder and then glue your paper to the toilet roll tube and cut where the paper overlaps. Trim off any edges that overlap the opening if needed.
  4. Add eyes and a nose to your dragon’s body, do this by using a Sharpie to draw the eyes and then draw a little square under your eye. This square will fold back and be glued down so that the dragon eyes stay upright. Do the same for the nose and glue the eyes and nose down.
  5. Cut tissue paper into strips no longer than about 10cm in length and about a finger’s width. Glue the strips to the top (this would be where the dragon eyes and nose are placed) and bottom of the inside of the toilet roll tube. There’s no need to add tissue paper to the sides of the toilet roll, at this point it’s fine if the tissue paper overlaps.
  6. Hold your dragon at an angle in front of you and breathe into the toilet roll tube – you’ll see its tissue paper fire breath come to life!

Chocolate Bubble Wrap

  1. We loved using Aero chocolate for this activity as it was so easy for little hands to break this apart. It just crumbled with little pressure, making it the perfect chocolate to use.
  2. As we’ll be touching food products everyone should wash their hands or use some hand sanitiser.
  3. Clean your working area thoroughly.
  4. Cut a small piece of bubble wrap about A4 size and just give it a quick wash and dry it.
  5. Crumble about 3-4 chocolate bars into a small bowl using your fingers to squash the Aero and watch it crumble beautifully into the bowl.
  6. Wash your hands to clean away all the chocolate bits left on your hand.
  7. Melt in the microwave at 30 second increments. Ensure you stir after each 30 second blast, so you can evenly distribute the heat and help it melt quicker.
  8. Pour the melted chocolate onto the bubble wrap and then spread it over evenly with a spatula or knife, making sure it’s not too thinly spread.
  9. Pop it into the fridge for about 30 minutes to set.

Parcel Tape Feet

Make sure to clean your working area and wash your hands before starting on this activity.

  1. Cut a straw in half and tape it (using the parcel tape) to the inside of the parcel tape roll making sure the straws stick out of the edge of the tape on opposite sides (i.e. left and right) and that they are placed on opposite ends (i.e. top and bottom) inside the parcel tape roll. Take a look at the image to help you place the straws. You only need a finger’s width of straw coming out of the tube so trim off any excess.
  2. Remove the cotton wool from the cotton buds on both ends. If you’re using a kebab stick, there’s no need to trim at all.
  3. Take a sheet of A4 paper and fold it half. Then trace around your child’s foot or get siblings to help each other to do this. Cut two little feet out of the paper.
  4. Place your feet (ensuring it’s a left and right foot side by side) and tape the cotton bud to the inside of each foot (using image as a guide).
  5. Slot the cotton buds into the straw, roll the parcel tape and watch your feet walk!

LGBT Fantasy Short Story “My New Master” inside The Mirador Fantasmagoria

Mirador Publishing invited submissions of short stories celebrating the Weird and the Wonderful. We were overwhelmed by the number and the quality of entries. Choosing the winners proved to be a monumental task. Our criteria centred on the gifts of storytelling and imagination. We believe these should be the overriding considerations, for the exploration of the human condition through the story telling process. We take great pleasure in presenting this selection by some of the world’s most promising new writers and we look forward to working with these immensely talented story tellers on future projects. Have fun and lose yourself in the wonderful Mirador Fantasmagoria.
