The April A-Z Blog Hop #AtoZChallenge

One of my new year’s resolutions for 2013 was to be more active on my blog sites, and post decent quality, interesting articles on a regular basis.

So far I think it is working out fairly well, but I needed a little help with inspiration for subject matter. We writers have a lot to say but it often gets jumbled up in our minds, and we sometimes need a little help to coax it out into a coherent format!

The April A-Z Blog Hop

Anyway, I decided to join some blog hops. These are organised events where people sign up to write about a particular topic, for example, books and writing. A date is set, and we prepare our material. The idea is that our blogs operate as a networking tool to get our message across to a wider audience. People visit their favourite blogs, see the links for the blog hops their writers have joined, and voila, they hop along to your site and hopefully stick around for a while!

I got very ambitious and signed up for the April A-Z Blog Hop challenge. During the month of April I have to write a post every day (except Sundays), and each day you write about something relating to a letter of the alphabet, in ascending order. I joined the category of books, because I thought that would give me greater scope for the imagination.

I have decided to write specifically about my Redcliffe novels LGBT fantasy book series. Every day I will talk about a different aspect of the novels, be it characters, location, settings, plot, or even the themes that crop up in the stories. I hope it will be exciting and interesting, and that if you haven’t yet read Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel), Love Kills (A Redcliffe Novel) or Love Redeems (A Redcliffe Novel), it will inspire you to try them out… Enjoy!

Big Dogs Gone Bad: the Dangerous Dogs Discussion

Today the UK headlines are dominated by the tragic story of a schoolgirl from Greater Manchester who was possibly mauled to death by four or five dogs in a private residence.

I have only heard the story on BBC Radio 5 Live so far, and each time it is discussed the broadcasters are quick to reiterate that nothing is certain about the girl’s cause of death. For all we know it could have been something totally different. We are the outsiders, once again peering into another person’s life and making assumptions about what might have happened to them.

Big Dogs Gone Bad: the Dangerous Dogs Discussion

Personally I feel very sad for the poor dogs that were shot dead at the scene, as well as for the girl and her family. I am sure that if the dogs were involved in her death, they were acting on instinct or by their own sense of action. News reports suggest that the dogs never caused any concern in the local neighbourhood previously, and we don’t seem to be clear on where the owners were at the time, or why the girl was left alone in the house.

Naturally the debate has turned to the issue of dangerous dogs and what should be done about them. I am pleased to hear a majority of people are keen to promote responsible dog ownership, rather than blame the animals themselves. I think it is a flaw in the human character that we seem to expect animals to behave in the way that we would. We seem to forget that we are totally different species, and that all dogs have different thought processes that dictate their actions.

No doubt the issue will run for a few more days in the immediate aftermath of this tragedy. There seems to be no definitive answer to the problem. I am not sure there are sufficient levels of attacks to prompt the government into action in terms of legislating against irresponsible ownership or dangerous dogs. It seems that all we can do is try to encourage people to think very carefully before taking on the responsibility of owning dogs, large and small.

I have a rescue dog

I have a rescue dog who is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross. He is the most loving, caring and even-tempered dog I have ever owned. He was house trained before he became a stray, and he is intelligent and resourceful. Yes, he has his faults, just like humans. The fact is that I and my husband are confident in our trusting relationship with him. We consider ourselves responsible dog owners, although I am sure there are people that would criticize from the outside.

Before our Staffie, I had a Yorkshire Terrier who was our family dog as a puppy. He was far more unpredictable and I wouldn’t have trusted him with children. I would consider him more dangerous than our Staffie, although of course the larger dog is capable of causing more serious physical damage to a person. So what can we do? Keep discussing the issue? Force a change born of knee-jerk reactions and public coercion? I don’t think there is a suitable answer to this issue. For now, we have to trust in dog owners and their pets on an individual basis.

Celebrating Ostara and the Beginning of Spring

We will soon be celebrating the Christian festival of Easter, but at this time of year we also recognise the change of season as we move from Winter into Spring.

Traditionally this was the time when country dwellers would step out of their homes and rejoice as the sunshine and warmer weather returned after a long, cold winter. Farmers begin to tend their fields to nurture the new crops for the year, and animals begin to produce offspring.

Welcome, Ostara! Pagan Fertility Festival with Catherine Green of SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Welcome, Ostara! Pagan Fertility Festival

Celebrating Ostara and the Beginning of Spring

Easter seems to have become something of a commercial gimmick in the Western world. People are coerced into believing they must buy and consume huge chocolate eggs, which while being very tasty, are clearly also very unhealthy in such quantities. However, I admit I do indulge in the practise myself, because I do love chocolate! The religious implications of Easter are to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and a symbol of new hope to people who have lived through a long, hard struggle.

I suppose we could apply the season to our current economic climate. There is a lot of doom and gloom, largely perpetuated by the media, that encourages people to look at the darker side of life. We have just received the annual budget forecast here in the UK, and actually not a lot has changed really. Of course the media and many people will focus on the negative side of the budget, because that seems to be human nature. But really, we are not in such a bad situation. At the end of the day, we live in a society where people can get help from others when they need it, no matter how desperate things seem.

Celebrate the good things in life

I am celebrating all the good things in life at the moment. Yes, I admit, I have my struggles. Finances aren’t brilliant in my household, but we are by no means poor. We have a few minor health niggles, but again, nothing that can’t be handled. I feel happy and positive because we have a bright, cheerful, Spring and Summer season ahead of us where we can get outside and enjoy long walks in the countryside and by the sea. My baby is due to be born in July, so I am essentially the representation of fertile Ostara at the moment! Life is good. Let us celebrate, and welcome the sunshine.

A Lesson in Business Networking

I have taken several huge steps in the development of my small freelance business. One of these was to get outside my home office, away from the computer, and to network with real people in real time, as opposed to relying solely on social networks.

So far I have had some fantastic experiences, and I eagerly await my next attendance at a networking event.

A Lesson in Business Networking

It has taken a lot of courage on my part to even consider attending these events. Not because I was afraid of meeting new people. The fear came from my lack of confidence in my own business idea. Would people really want my services as a copy writer and editor? Could I follow through with my promises? Can I make it work? The answer to all these is yes, of course, but I had to convince myself. Silly, eh!

Anyway, once I ‘sucked it up’ to quote an American phrase, I really embraced the idea and practise of business networking. My first tentative attempts came in 2012 when I was introduced to women in business events taking place in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. This was my home city and a place that was familiar, so it was good to start there I thought. It is also fairly local to where I live now, and therefore an excellent base to build my contacts and clients.

Business Networking in Stoke-on-Trent

During the last month or so I have attended two more events. The first was very local. It was called Building Business in Middlewich and is something I am very keen to promote and be involved with. I want to work with local businesses, become a solid and active member of my local community, and give something back. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting people at this event and I look forward to the next one taking place in April.

The second, and more recent, event I attended was just last week, at the Moat House Hotel in Stoke-on-Trent. Again it was a familiar venue, although my last visits there were for a family wedding and a staff party! This time it was a business speed networking event, hosted by Lexus of Stoke. I thought it was a great idea. Lexus wanted to showcase their new cars and explain why they are of benefit to people from these local companies. We, the attendees, wanted to meet new people and make new contacts. It was a win-win situation.

I Need to get Better at Networking

One thing I learned from these business networking events was the process of the networking. The aim is not to go in and directly acquire customers or clients. The aim is to go in, meet people, share your skills and experience, and nurture the relationships that are formed as a result. Since attending these events I have kept in contact with a few specific people, and we will in turn help each other in our respective business endeavours.

I have found people that can act as informal mentors in business networking, both physically and across social networks. That to me is incredibly valuable, because I have a lot to learn. I want to extend my thanks now to Chalky White of the Chalis Partnership, for his help and advice in particular. Here’s to our continued business success!

UK Budget Day and the Aspiration Nation

Today was Budget Day in the UK. We listened to George Osborne set out his plans to develop more state assistance for working parents, reduce the handouts given to those perceived as ‘unworthy,’ and raise charges on various other sundries and services.

I missed the actual speech, but I listen to BBC radio 5 Live, and so I heard the gist of what was happening.

#MummyMonday Reflections on the Government Budget 2013 with SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
#MummyMonday Reflections on the Government Budget 2013

UK Budget Day and the Aspiration Nation

My main concern is the topic of the 5 Live Your Call phone-in at 9am this morning. The Conservative (sorry, coalition) government want to offer incentives for parents of young children, to encourage them back into the workplace. More specifically this is aimed at women, and I say this based on personal experience. In my social circles it is largely the men that work full time and the women who either stay home with the children, or juggle part time or full time jobs around childcare.

This is the issue that upsets me. All I heard on the radio this morning was that stay at home mothers are demanding handouts and they don’t deserve them. How dare people say such things, and actually mean it! I am at cross purposes at the moment. I was a stay at home mother for the past 18 months when my maternity leave expired and I chose not to return to my minimum wage part-time job. But I work from home developing my business as a freelance writer, and it is a very slow and tedious process.

Respect the Stay at home Mother

I have said before that I despise the term ‘stay at home mother.’ It implies that we, the childminders and domestic cleaners, do not work. There is no respect in the UK for people, and I say again, women (with the odd rare househusband) who make the tough decision not to return to paid employment. We don’t take the easy option. Far from it. We take responsibility for our own children, at the expense of our financial independence and future pension benefits. We have to rely fully on our husbands or partners for financial support, and that to me is very difficult.

I do not expect handouts from the tax payer. I loathed paying such high taxes when I was in full time employment for several years. We all do. From what I have learned, back in the rose-tinted post-war years when women returned to the home and men to the office, housewives would receive an allowance from their husbands. This, in effect, was their salary. It seems that nowadays many families simply do not have the spare cash after they have paid the household bills and transport costs. And then there is childcare if both parents are working away from home.

We need support

All I want, and what so many of my friends and acquaintances want, is a little understanding. We need respect and support for the job that we do as housewife, mother, domestic slave. It takes a lot of courage I think to give up a regular job and rely solely on another person for your home and board. It also takes the patience of a saint to raise children and teach them decent values and morals so that they grow up to be well-adjusted members of society. These are our future carers, providers and pioneers. Why should we damage them at a young age because we are coerced into accepting thankless jobs in faceless corporations? We should not.

Sickness Bugs and Sleepless Nights

Good morning! Wow, it has been almost a week since I posted on here, and what a week it has been.

My toddler experienced her first sickness bug last week. It began on Monday morning, quite without warning, She was playing happily with her dolls’ house, and suddenly she threw up all over it! Not the best start to a morning, and it got steadily worse.

Sickness Bugs and Sleepless Nights

She was ill again just an hour later, at which point I realised she was unfit to attend pre-school. And that was my week. For the first two days we were shut in at home. My daughter alternately slept, had cuddles, and brought up whatever food and drink she tried to eat. I managed to do a little work around her naptimes, alongside scrubbing the carpets and sofa and washing practically all of her clothes as they got soiled very frequently.

I had a couple of days reprieve when my husband finished his work shift and was at home while I went out to do some pre-planned activities. I am so glad I had that opportunity. I would have gone quite mad if I had spent the whole five days shut in at home with a sick toddler! We managed a couple of walks out with the dog, with my daughter tucked up warmly in her pushchair.

Still a productive week

Despite everything, I think it was quite a productive week. My husband and I began to feel a little ill towards the end of it, and on Saturday night we were all in bed for 8:30pm, which is practically unheard of for me! So far we seem to have escaped the mystery bug, and today normal service will resume. Phew! Stay tuned for updates on my first experiences of speed networking.

Showcasing the Talent of the Mumpreneur!

I have recently adopted the new popular term Mumpreneur as part of my vocabulary. I think it is quite witty, quite appropriate, and very cute! The term is an interesting one really.

After all the talk of International Women’s Day  last week, and my own personal experiences of being a woman in small business, I find that I am not alone. During recent years there has been an increase in mothers who take control of their careers and in many cases reinvent themselves in a manner that is fulfilling, rewarding, and most importantly that fits in with the family model.

Women working Part-Time

It is a curious thing that women still seem to take the brunt of responsibility for children. In my immediate social circles the reason is largely financial. Our husbands and partners generally earn more money than we do, and so it makes sense for them to keep the full time jobs while we juggle work and childcare. It isn’t exactly a fair deal, but we have to make it work. I also realise that many women prefer to work part time or not at all, because family is the most important aspect for them. That is very admirable, and I mean that sincerely.

For me personally, being a ‘stay at home mother’ (a term I dislike immensely) cannot be an option. Yes I am at home. But I am working. My daughter attends pre-school three days a week, which gives me some time to dedicate to writing projects and freelance work. I have chosen to become a Mumpreneur for a few reasons. The main one is financial. We are beginning to struggle on a singular household wage, and we do not qualify for enough state benefits that would make us comfortable (not that we want to be that way). I also need to work for my own sense of purpose and satisfaction. I have to feed my ego, and fulfil myself as an individual. I adore being a mother. I truly appreciate the wonder of my family. But I need a little something to call my own.

Mumpreneurs I admire

I am not alone in this. I can showcase 2 women in particular who are currently displaying their own talents and skills as successful Mumpreneurs. The first is a lady from the Middlewich area, and I met her when our children were babies and we began attending local social groups and classes together. She decided not to return to work because her previous occupation was very time-consuming and not at all child friendly. She decided instead to utilise her talent for crafts, and she successfully launched the Little Lotty Shop.

The second Mumpreneur is a close personal friend that I met at university several years ago. Natalie has a passion for photography, and so she decided to set up Jolley Tots Photography shortly after the birth of her daughter, and now she is expanding into other areas of the business. She offers family photo shoots using delightful and whimsical props, and she can also do maternity boudoir photography for something a little bit different and special. You can see examples of Natalie’s work on her blog.

I know there are many other wonderful women around the UK who are making excellent use of their talents and skills. I salute you all, and we should come together united in our sisterhood. Our children will be proud, and we will be fulfilled and happy in our endeavours. Hooray for the Mumpreneur!

A Very Lovely Mother’s Day

Yesterday we celebrated Mother’s Day in the UK. I hadn’t planned anything special since my husband was at work all weekend and we only have one car between us. My daughter is only 2, so I couldn’t exactly take a day off.

As it was, we had a lovely day out with my sister and her partner. We visited a local craft and antique centre called Dagfields. It is a wonderful cornucopia of crafts, antiques and delicious food, and it also houses my favourite local second-hand bookshop, Booklore.

A Very Lovely Mother’s Day

My husband decided he was off the hook from the traditional Mother’s Day card and gift when we collected our daughter from pre-school last week and she presented me with a beautiful hand crafted card and some home made peppermint creams. I was delighted because I wasn’t expecting it. Having only recently enrolled her at pre-school, I take great pleasure in seeing the paintings and creations she produces after her sessions. Here is her Mother’s Day gift for me, what do you think?

Oh, and my husband didn’t get out of it totally. Last week when I visited a spa I had a foot massage as my Mother’s Day gift. He also surprised me last night by returning home from work and brandishing a box of Cadbury’s Milk Tray chocolates. He knows how to keep his pregnant wife happy!
