When Doctors don’t know what’s Wrong

I am a medical mystery. All my life I have lived with a chronic disease called Lymphedema Distichiasis.

It took many years for my parents to get a proper diagnosis, and my younger brother has the same condition. It is congenital. Oddly, our sister does not have the disease, nor has she ever exhibited symptoms. We were born with it.

Living with Undiagnosed Illness by SpookyMrsGreen.com pagan lifestyle blog.
Living with Undiagnosed Illness

When Doctors don’t know what’s Wrong

My illness manifests in the eyes. I regularly remove ingrowing eyelashes that grow on the wrong part of the eyelid and scratch the cornea. I use a selection of daily eye drops and ointments to soothe the pain of old scars, inflammation, blepharitis, and severe Dry Eye Syndrome. It is horrible. Living with undiagnosed illness causes a lot of mental and emotional stress, and when I was younger, this was not a consideration. I was expected to live a normal life, because I wasn’t really ill, never mind the fact that most of the time I couldn’t see clearly. The medical profession had no idea of the complexities of my congenital disease, and it is only in recent years that doctors have listened to my feelings and emotions regarding the situation. There is still a long way to go, and there will never be a cure for this. It hurts, in more ways than the physical.

Last week I took myself to hospital on doctor’s advice when I woke up with severe chest pain one morning. I thought it was stress. The doctors thought differently. They were concerned about my rapid heartbeat and the results they saw from my blood tests. They sent me for a CT scan. They discovered a nodule in my lung cavity. It looks benign and I don’t have any underlying health symptoms that would be connected to it. My congenital condition is completely separate, according to the doctors. They have requested advice from external agencies because they don’t want to interfere medically if that could potentially make me ill. I am left wondering what to do now. They wanted to admit me to hospital last week but decided I was safer at home due to the risk of contracting Covid-19. I was not specifically told to rest, and there is no medication because there is nothing to treat. All I have is a bit of mild pain and the sensation of a bubble in my chest when I breathe in. I don’t know how long it has been there, or if it has changed in size recently, causing the pain I experienced.

Message from my body

I have decided that this is a message from my body that I need to accept. No one knows what’s wrong with me. It would take a long time to explain almost twenty years of being with a man who professes to love me but has no idea how to care for me. There are personal issues, a broken family, unrecognised trauma from many years ago, and probably a lot more stuff that I have yet to uncover in my quest for optimum health. I have decided to take a holistic approach to health. It won’t take medicine, or a surgical procedure, or even a prolonged period of rest to make me better. I need to change my diet, my exercise plan, my daily lifestyle habits. I need to stop giving all of myself to people that give nothing or very little in return. I need to practice self-care. And that is what I’m going to do. Who is with me on this exciting journey towards good health and acceptance of what we cannot influence?

Craft Activities for Kids #CraftingWithViking

Do you need suggestions for simple craft ideas with household items?

We are deep into our third month in lockdown here in the UK, and trust me, I am feeling the strain of keeping the children entertained at home. Never mind the fact that they get bored easily, they eat everything in sight, and they have so much pent-up energy, but now we have to give them something to do!

Craft Activities for Kids

We had all but used up our craft stash, and then I had an email from Viking Direct. I have heard of Viking office supplies, but I didn’t realise that they offer so much more for the home office and home school. Viking Direct sell stationery and craft supplies (we got Sharpies!), and most important right now, they sell cleaning products. If you are like me, and you refused to join the madness of hoarding toilet rolls and hand sanitiser back in April, you are probably still searching for supplies. You can order them from Viking Direct!

Online Craft Event

I was incredibly pleased to receive a box full of goodies from Viking Direct that we were going to use in an online craft event. The workshop was hosted by Jane from Tea & Crafting, and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We made toilet roll dragons, bubble wrap chocolate and moving feet using packaging tape! It was awfully hard not to eat the Aero chocolate bars that were included, but I hid them in the salad drawer in the fridge, so we still had them in time for the Zoom event. Jane led the workshop very well and we will try these crafts again, maybe on a rainy day. Here is the list of craft projects, with instructions so you can try them at home:

Three Great Craft Activities for Kids from Viking

Finding activities to keep the kids entertained that don’t involve a games console or staring at television can be tough. At Viking, we’ve got three great ideas to beat the boredom with crafty and creative ideas.

Fire Breathing Dragon

  1. Clean your working area and wash your hands or use some hand sanitiser before starting.
  2. Take a sheet of A4 paper. Measure how high your toilet roll tube is and then cut a strip of paper along the long side of the A4 using that measurement.
  3. Spread glue over your toilet roll holder and then glue your paper to the toilet roll tube and cut where the paper overlaps. Trim off any edges that overlap the opening if needed.
  4. Add eyes and a nose to your dragon’s body, do this by using a Sharpie to draw the eyes and then draw a little square under your eye. This square will fold back and be glued down so that the dragon eyes stay upright. Do the same for the nose and glue the eyes and nose down.
  5. Cut tissue paper into strips no longer than about 10cm in length and about a finger’s width. Glue the strips to the top (this would be where the dragon eyes and nose are placed) and bottom of the inside of the toilet roll tube. There’s no need to add tissue paper to the sides of the toilet roll, at this point it’s fine if the tissue paper overlaps.
  6. Hold your dragon at an angle in front of you and breathe into the toilet roll tube – you’ll see its tissue paper fire breath come to life!

Chocolate Bubble Wrap

  1. We loved using Aero chocolate for this activity as it was so easy for little hands to break this apart. It just crumbled with little pressure, making it the perfect chocolate to use.
  2. As we’ll be touching food products everyone should wash their hands or use some hand sanitiser.
  3. Clean your working area thoroughly.
  4. Cut a small piece of bubble wrap about A4 size and just give it a quick wash and dry it.
  5. Crumble about 3-4 chocolate bars into a small bowl using your fingers to squash the Aero and watch it crumble beautifully into the bowl.
  6. Wash your hands to clean away all the chocolate bits left on your hand.
  7. Melt in the microwave at 30 second increments. Ensure you stir after each 30 second blast, so you can evenly distribute the heat and help it melt quicker.
  8. Pour the melted chocolate onto the bubble wrap and then spread it over evenly with a spatula or knife, making sure it’s not too thinly spread.
  9. Pop it into the fridge for about 30 minutes to set.
  10. Whilst the chocolate is setting clean your working area again wiping away any spilt chocolate etc.
  11. After its set peel back the bubble wrap from the chocolate and be amazed at your homemade chocolate bubble wrap.

Parcel Tape Feet

Make sure to clean your working area and wash your hands before starting on this activity.

  1. Cut a straw in half and tape it (using the parcel tape) to the inside of the parcel tape roll making sure the straws stick out of the edge of the tape on opposite sides (i.e. left and right) and that they are placed on opposite ends (i.e. top and bottom) inside the parcel tape roll. Take a look at the image to help you place the straws. You only need a finger’s width of straw coming out of the tube so trim off any excess.
  2. Remove the cotton wool from the cotton buds on both ends. If you’re using a kebab stick, there’s no need to trim at all.
  3. Take a sheet of A4 paper and fold it half. Then trace around your child’s foot or get siblings to help each other to do this. Cut two little feet out of the paper.
  4. Place your feet (ensuring it’s a left and right foot side by side) and tape the cotton bud to the inside of each foot (using image as a guide).
  5. Slot the cotton buds into the straw, roll the parcel tape and watch your feet walk!

Searching for Hope during Lockdown

I joined the social network for A Chronic Voice because I needed to find people who understand what life is like with chronic pain. Today I have written a post using the June link-up prompts, to show my experience of living with a chronic pain disorder.

Searching for Hope during Lockdown

Searching

Life in lockdown has settled into a strange and slow routine. I have gone through lots of emotions, mood swings, ups and downs during the past couple of months. I finally asked myself, “What am I searching for here?” My response was, “I don’t know.” I was in a state of flux before the pandemic hit. There was a niggling voice telling me that I need something more for myself. After ten years of marriage I have fallen into the rut of caring for the children and the home, and I feel like we have slipped back into the 1950s as a family model. That is not what I want for myself or my children. I am searching for a way to change my routine and my life.

Hoping

At this point in time, my hope has all but faded. My marriage is in serious trouble and I am not going to smile and nod and pretend everything is fine. I have tried every possible route to saving our marriage. We have had counselling, we have tried talking to each other, we have argued, we have ignored. Now my husband has completely buried himself in work, and I believe that he is hoping I will forget about my complaints and that eventually we will fall back into a happy state where I am compliant and giving, always doing everything for him in the home. I give all of myself to my family. Now I hope that I can find some time for me.

Traumatising

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a lot of trauma all around the world. While my family have so far emerged unscathed, I have friends who were not so lucky. I am surrounded by grief and turmoil, and because I am an empath, I feel it very deeply. I have not seen my mum since March, and that hurts. She is still trying to stay home as much as possible, which she did before the pandemic because she is disabled and has chronic illness. Her immune system is weak, so my siblings and I have been careful not to see her, because we don’t want to risk spreading the virus if we happen to be carrying it. I miss our Saturday afternoons at Mum’s house, enjoying a takeaway tea together. I only recently recognised that this lack of family interaction has had a traumatising effect on me.

Honouring

Here in the UK we are slowly starting to ease lockdown restrictions, although many people think is too soon and we are still very much a high-risk nation. I have mixed feelings about it all. I have now resigned myself to the fact that my children will not return to school until at least September, a fact which makes us all feel sad. This week our non-essential shops and theme parks are allowed to reopen, but I feel no desire to rush out and visit them. There is a small local shopping village that I will visit, but otherwise I will continue to honour the reasons behind lockdown and stay home as much as possible. My children and I have no need to leave home anyway, except to walk the dog.

Responding

Where do we go from here? How do I respond to the myriad niggles and worries that continue to trouble me? My eyes are still a problem. During lockdown I have been able to source my eyedrops and ointments so that was a relief, but I have also been left to care for two young children and a dog by myself, even on days when I have blurred vision and am left feeling grumpy and tired because the eye pain is so intense. All I can do is practice my reiki meditation even just for five minutes here and there, try to keep my children motivated and happy, and wait to see if my husband responds to his family. I won’t hold my breath.

#BookTalk: “Vampire of Blackpool” by Catherine Green

The vampire, the witch, and the hunter battle it out in a contemporary Gothic adventure in Northern England.

Meredith Hanson lives in Blackpool, the former Victorian holiday hotspot of Northern England. She masquerades as a reclusive author, feeding on the blood of unsuspecting tourists without remorse. Her life takes on new meaning when she meets a young witch in a local pub one evening.

Despite Meredith’s cold demeanour, she finds herself oddly fascinated with Samantha Morris, and falls into an accidental relationship with the girl. It is at this time that a vampire hunter arrives in Blackpool. He is tough, he is determined, and his next target is an ancient vampire that has been spotted in the tourist town. He intends to bring her down and destroy her to save the lives of innocent humans. Will he succeed? Or will the experienced vampire seductress be the cause of his undoing?

“What are you doing here, Meredith?” Samantha asked.

I smiled but said nothing. Samantha looked at Ryan James. She frowned.

“Did you do this to him?” she asked, moving forward but keeping the bed as a barrier between me and her.

She leaned forward, appraising her patient with a professional eye. She took in the sling on his arm, the cuts and bruises all over his skin, and the large bandage on his left shoulder. She reached over and carefully lifted a corner of it, and her eyes widened. She knew the truth.

“Why did you do this?” she asked, “And why are you here now?”

It’s my Wedding Anniversary!

Today is my tenth wedding anniversary. I married my husband at Chester Zoo ten years ago, and it was a wonderful day. I wore a beautiful dress and felt like a princess.

Our family and friends came to celebrate with us, and we went on honeymoon in North Yorkshire. We took our dog, Baxter, because my husband could not put him into kennels and go abroad for a honeymoon. I found us a beautiful holiday cottage on the coast near to Whitby, and we visited the famous Whitby Abbey so that I could indulge in my Gothic fascination.

Two days before our wedding, we discovered I was pregnant, which came as a surprise but a very welcome one. Our honeymoon was spent mostly staring at my stomach in wonder thinking, “How are we going to be parents?!”

Image of a bride and groom at Chester Zoo wedding. It's my Wedding Anniversary! at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog
It’s my Wedding Anniversary!

It’s my Wedding Anniversary!

I had hoped that my husband might take half a day to work from home on our anniversary, or at least try to finish work on time instead of returning home around 10pm. He has no such intentions, however. Why should he spend time with his wife on our ten-year wedding anniversary? His reasoning is that we can’t go anywhere because of lockdown, so we should do something later in the year instead. I explained that I just want some time with him at home, with his family. We have barely seen him for the past three months as he is so engrossed in his work. His one day off is usually spent doing personal admin, small DIY projects, and sleeping. We have had no quality time since New Year’s Day.

I have mixed feelings about my husband’s complete disregard for our milestone anniversary. We have now been together as a couple for twenty years, which is more than half of our lives. And yet we do not share our lives. We are married but we do not really live together. His life revolves around work, and it always has done. I didn’t notice before we got married because I worked full time and spent my weekends on overnight ghost hunts. I only began to realise that he had anxiety and depression after we were married. He never made it clear to me, and his parents didn’t try to prepare me. Indeed, it is only this year that I found out he has had mental health problems all his life. I knew it was inherited from his mother, as this became apparent during the past ten years.

I am basically a single parent

I have been left to parent our two children completely alone for the past two months while in lockdown, and train our rescue dog, who we adopted in December last year. My marriage has been a lonely one so far, but I still believe it has been mostly happy. I can see the bigger picture, and I am more than capable of looking after myself and my children. We take our holidays with friends when we can, we have outings and parties without my husband, and that’s just the way it is. Maybe he will decide to join us eventually. Today I will celebrate my wedding anniversary with my daughters. They suggested we have a little tea party at home, and that is what we will do. Happy Anniversary, Daniel. Hopefully, we will see you soon

#BookTalk: “The Darkness of Love” by Catherine Green

“The Darkness of Love” by Catherine Green

Lord Gregory Stockton is a powerful and respected businessman embracing the modern era of the Victorian industrial revolution. His young wife is infatuated with the stable boy, much to Gregory’s amusement. He hatches a plan to bring the would-be lovers together, and then cruelly tear them apart as he continues to build his empire and secure his power base in the south of England. The humans are pawns in the vampire’s game of lust, love and control.

Excerpt from “The Darkness of Love”

Amelia picked up her glass and took a long sip of the rich red wine.  When she spoke again her eyes were glowing and her fangs had extended delicately.  Gregory felt her energy filling the room, and he smiled, responding with a lash of his own cold power.  He possessed the energy and strength of diamonds, hard and impenetrable.  Amelia shivered, her lips curling in a hiss, and wrapped her violet sparks around him in a cold, sharp embrace.  To a human there was nothing unusual in this room, but to a vampire, it was electric and very exciting.  They played a fine line between safety and danger, and Amelia thrived on danger.

“You wish for me to seduce this young man at your party next week?” Amelia asked, still caressing Gregory with her power, while she stood like a marble statue in front of the fireplace.

Gregory nodded, keeping his cool silver gaze fixed on her black eyes.  He tried so hard to ignore his Mistress’ advances, but he could never refuse her.  He belonged to her, and he was not strong enough to break free.

“Yes,” he said, “I am sure he will be compliant, for he is a man with vigorous appetites, or so I hear from the villagers.  He has a reputation among the workers’ daughters.”

Amelia smiled and nodded, her eyes glowing with excitement.  She licked her lips, and her eyes showed a glimmer of fire, deep in the pupils.  She was a contradiction of everything the vampires knew about themselves.  She burned with both fire and ice, and no-one could escape her trap when she set it.

“I will not disappoint my oldest friend.” she said simply.
