Helping Your Child Get Back to the Classroom

Returning to school after being at home can be a nerve-wracking time for children. Even if they’re excited to see their friends again, it can be tough for them to get back to the routine of going to school every day. On top of that, their school routine might not be the same as it was before.

A lot of children have had to return to school after a long period of home-schooling this year, and it can be stressful for everyone involved. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to help make the transition easier for your child.

Discuss Your Child’s Feelings

It’s important to make sure your child has the opportunity to express their feelings about going back to school. Some children will share more easily than others, so be sure to make it clear that you’re here to listen. Asking your child questions about how they’re feeling and what it’s like being back at school can help them to express themselves and discuss how things are going. It’s also helpful to name your child’s emotions if you can see that they’re struggling. Sometimes they don’t have the words to say how they’re feeling, so you can help them out.

Talk About Changes at School

When things have changed at school, it can make it more difficult to go back. Things aren’t the same as before, which can make it harder to settle back in. Children might be in temporary classrooms or dealing with various social distancing rules. Talking about the things that have changed and reassuring your child can make it easier for them to process everything. Discuss why the measures are in place and how they’re helping everyone to stay safe. Try to find out what measures are being taken at your child’s school so that you can talk about them.

Catch Up with Teachers

It can be useful to try to catch up with your child’s teacher or teachers before they go back to school, or even after. A catch-up call gives you the opportunity to discuss how your child is feeling and any difficulties that they might be having. It could also give your child a chance to say hello and express any worries that they might have to their teacher. As well as a phone call, any other form of communication could be helpful, such as an email or letter.

Give Your Child Some Control

When something is happening that might make your child feel out of control, you can help them to feel more in control. There might be some things that you don’t have much control over, but you can let your child make choices about some parts of their routine. You might let them pick what to have for their lunch, help them to choose their own school supplies, or allow them to have a bit more control over what they do outside of school.

Getting back to the classroom after time away might be hard on your child, but you can help to make it a more comfortable experience.

Excerpt from “Love Kills (A Redcliffe Novel)” by Catherine Green

We were back in the entrance hallway, the one where I had almost died. I stopped in the middle of the room, staring down at a dark stain on the flags. This was my blood.  I had lain here, bleeding from the neck and stomach, when Danny had fought Seamus Tully to the death. Closing my eyes I could hear the dim sounds of snarls and growls, turning to howls as wolves were slain. Simon and Sally had been injured but they healed quickly, so when they visited me in hospital it seemed like I was the only one to suffer. I took a few deep breaths, and when I opened my eyes Danny was standing silently beside me. I hadn’t even felt his presence.

“The floor has been cleaned several times.” Danny said, looking down at the stain.

“A permanent reminder I suppose.” I said lightly, though my voice quivered.

“Come, Jessica, let us return to the pub.” Danny said, taking my hand and gently leading me towards the door across the room.

I nodded.

“Yes,” I said, “I need a drink.”

#TheRedcliffeNovels Series

The Redcliffe novels series follow the adventures of bookshop owner Jessica Stone as she meets a man and falls in love, only to discover the hidden werewolf secrets of her close friends. That includes Simon Bunce, manager of the Ship Inn, who turns out to be lieutenant to the Redcliffe werewolf pack, and lover to the wolf alpha Danny Mason. He fights to protect his master from the ethereal animal familiar who threatens to claim their pack. Who knew the Cornish coast could be so deadly?

Sink your teeth into the enchanting world of vampires and werewolves with Catherine Green’s LGBT fantasy series! Book 2, “Love Kills (The Redcliffe Novels),” awaits your embrace.

5 Top Tips on How to Care for Yourself

How do you feel today? Are you busy working, parenting, doing jobs for friends and family members, chasing appointments, deliveries, caring for pets, cleaning the house, tidying the garden… the list goes on.

When did you last do something just for you? I don’t mean going to bed early. I mean proper self-care. If we don’t care for ourselves, we cannot care for other people. I learned that the hard way and I knew I was on a self-destruct pathway a good few years ago. I got myself stuck in a rut that I never intended to fall into, and then I couldn’t get out. The answer for me was reiki self-healing therapy. It might be the answer for you, but then there might be other paths. Let’s explore your options.

5 Top Tips on How to Care for Yourself

1, Take a holiday. I don’t mean pack your suitcase and fly away to an exotic island, as tempting as that may be. Life is too uncertain in these times of pandemic and travel restrictions. What I mean is try and allow yourself a week, or at least a few days. Book time off work, try to arrange childcare to ease the burden, arrange to do something relaxing with a friend. Stay at home and rest. Do nothing. You will feel better.

2, Learn to listen to your body. When was the last time you looked in the mirror and properly saw yourself? Stop what you are doing now and focus on your body. Do you feel pain anywhere? Are your shoulders hunched? Do you feel heavy, achy, overwhelmed? Once we engage with our bodies, we can learn what needs to change. Take time to sit by yourself and look within. Be honest about how you feel. Write it in a journal if it helps. Record it on your phone. Make a conscious effort to look after yourself.

3, Have a good night’s sleep. Do you struggle to sleep for more than 6 hours at night? Do you wake up regularly and struggle to settle? Perhaps you would benefit from some sleeping aids. Try not to be on your devices in the hour before you plan to go to bed. Try sitting or lying in bed and play relaxing music in the background so that you can drift off gently. Remember not to eat junk food close to bedtime because it will stimulate your body so that you can’t relax. This can help you in so many ways, from helping you feel alert the next day to even protecting you while driving thanks to how focused and present you feel. This can help you avoid unnecessary problems that may require a car accident lawyer, for instance, and it can help you focus on your professional duties more capably.

4, Try complementary therapy to improve your physical and mental health. I mentioned reiki self-healing therapy before, and it has worked wonders for me. Since learning to practise reiki for self-healing I have now set up a business offering relaxing reiki treatments to other people. I do this because it works. It helps to relieve the effects of physical illness, it improves my mental health, and it helps to stabilise my emotions. I am a lot less angry these days! There are other complementary therapies available that work just as well. Try full body massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, meditation, or crystal therapy. There is something for everyone. Find your therapy today.

5, Drink water and eat a balanced diet. I am my own worst enemy on this front, I admit. I am a coffee drinker, and I know I need to drink more water. I am trying, and that’s the main thing. We need water to survive. We also need nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. I love junk food and I’m not about to cut it from my diet. I do try to balance what I consume, and I try to eat healthier meals wherever possible. I also try to avoid snacking too much, especially late at night which is my habit. We can learn to change our habits once we acknowledge them.

Tarot Card Reading for Guidance in Relationships

Today I share a Tarot card reading for June, and this one is hosted by the Vampires Tarot of Eternal Night. I love this deck because it is dark and gothic and appeals to my spooky nature. Does it appeal to you?

The spread I used is called The Cross, and the reading was quite deep in the end, featuring three cards from the Major Arcana which corresponds to big events or news. Read on and see if the Tarot card reading resonates with you.

Tarot Card Reading for Guidance in Relationships

1, Yesterday: What led to the current situation – The High Priestess – Divine Connection

You led us to this situation. There is something missing from your life and while you desperately seek this mysterious higher realm, you distance yourself from those you once felt close to. They simply don’t understand how you feel. Do you understand how you feel? You are now adrift from everything, trapped between worlds.

2, Tomorrow: The immediate future – Knight of Wands – Observe

Someone is aware of you. They see your ability and they recognise your value. You may not know them personally, but they will show themselves when they feel ready. Did you apply for a new job? Your luck may be about to turn.

3, What is Hidden: Events or facts that you are not aware of – The Magician – Control

Have you complained that other people are controlling your life? Maybe you feel trapped by your partner, or your children, or even trapped in your job. Remember that you created all these relationships. You nurtured them. You decide what is worth keeping and what needs to go. Take back control.

4, What is Known: Events or facts that you are aware of – Wheel of Fortune – Cycles

It is time to step back from the chaos. The situation you have been dealing with is beyond your control, and deep down you always knew it. Now is a good time to step away and leave the others to find their own path through the storm. You always knew how it would play out. Let it reach a natural conclusion.

5, The Path: The Tarot’s Advice – Eight of Swords – Bound

If you really want to resolve the situation then you must make sacrifices. You want to be free in a world that doesn’t understand you. Perhaps you will find it easier if you restrain the aspects of yourself that don’t quite fit with your current place.

6, The Truth: The Response – Ten of Swords – Dreams

Your time has come, and there is nothing more to say. You really did try to fix it. There are happy memories to cherish and a lot of good came from your union. But now it is over. Do not try to move on. Simply accept, grieve, and wait for a new day.

Summary

The vampires tell it like it is. There is no gentle way out for you. There is pain and unhappiness, but you do remember the good times. While I am confused about why the Tarot would advise one to hide themselves or make themselves fit in with others, I suppose it is trying to say that we choose where we want to be. If we want to be in a certain lifestyle, or a certain environment, we may have to adapt to fit that environment. Alternatively, we keep searching for a place that fits us. When you are ready to move on you will be ready for a new cycle.

#BookTalk: Vampire Hunter meets the Vampire of Blackpool

Happy Hump Day! I am looking forward to visiting my favourite seaside town, Blackpool, when pandemic restrictions are eased in the next month or so.

For now, I share an excerpt from LGBT fantasy book “Vampire of Blackpool” for your reading pleasure.

Image of a female vampire facing a vampire hunter man who has his back to the viewer and is holding a knife behind his back. You can see Blackpool Tower and Blackpool Illuminations in the foreground. 3D book cover image for “Vampire of Blackpool” fantasy novel by LGBT fantasy book writer Catherine Green including phone and iPad download images for tablet, iPhone, and android book readers.

Excerpt from Vampire of Blackpool by Catherine Green

“I know you are up there,” the man said suddenly, and I stifled a gasp, crouching still and silent, “Come out and face me, vampire.”

He was a hunter. I knew immediately by the bitter tone of his voice, and the courageous nature of his words. For the first time in over seventy years, I was facing a vampire hunter who wanted my head on his sword. I felt nothing. I could easily dispatch of him. I had done so with all the other vampire hunters throughout the centuries. In the early years they truly believed in the power of crosses, holy water and garlic. At first these tools had caused a little discomfort, but I had learned to overcome them. Wooden stakes were still a problem. There was something about wood that simply disagreed with a vampire’s body. It was one of the few materials from which we could only heal at human speed, unless it pierced our heart, in which case it killed. We had the same problem with pure silver. The metal contained a natural repellent, and it worked for both vampires and shape shifters. We were still unsure of the reasons why. Our ancient texts and teachers believed it was all tied to the magic of the moon. All I knew was that I avoided coming into contact with wood and silver at all costs.

The man paced a few steps in a tight circle, looking up to where I crouched in the shadows. He knew I was here. He was not about to give up. I found myself intrigued.  I could descend upon him now and kill him immediately. I would drop his body into the ocean, and nobody would be any the wiser. But I still smarted from Samantha’s attack earlier that evening. Despite my crazed feeding in the nightclubs, I felt weakened, exposed. I was also angry. How dare such a young upstart as her do that to me? I warned her that she was in danger, and still she pursued me. It was her fault.  She brought it on herself. The anger that had been bubbling just below the surface suddenly burst forward, and I hissed, leaping down from my perch and aiming for the vampire hunter. I landed on his shoulders almost immediately and he crumpled to the floor with a shout, sprawling in the soft, dry sand at the very edge of the beach.

How the Mum Checklist Changes as Your Kids grow Older

I am feeling a strange transition in my mothering journey. My youngest daughter will soon celebrate her eighth birthday and my elder daughter is about to enter her last year at primary school. We have been invited to open days at our local high schools, eek!

A few years ago, I wrote a Mum checklist based on having babies and toddlers. I think it’s time I updated that to reflect my current situation. Feel free to suggest more checklist items in the comments. It really is never-ending with these kids.

Photo of Catherine Green with her daughters on Central Pier at Blackpool with Blackpool Tower in the background. Copyright Catherine Green at SpookyMrsGreen.com pagan lifestyle blog.

The Mum Checklist

1, Do their clothes and shoes still fit? My daughters are growing so fast, especially their feet, that I can barely keep up with them. We had just replaced old boots and shoes when we realised they needed sandals for summer. It seems to be an endless cycle of removing old clothes and acquiring new ones in bigger sizes.

2, Are they eating properly? When they were younger it was my job to feed the children, ensure they ate regular meals and snacks and drank plenty of fluid. Now they are older they are more capable of finding food, they can reach the fridge, and they can generally fetch their own drinks and snacks. My job now is to ensure they eat a balanced diet, to limit the amount of junk food they eat, and continue to teach them the importance of vitamins and minerals. It is a hard battle.

3, What do they need for school? Now we are back at school following lockdowns I am conscious that my children need uniform that fits. We have new rules post-Covid that mean they must wear PE kits all day on PE days, so I must ensure they have the right clothes on the right days. It is confusing! My girls also take packed lunches as they refuse to eat school dinners, so I am always thinking about what food I can put in a lunchbox that will remain edible on a hot day, that won’t be too messy, that will fill them up, that is as healthy as I can manage, and that they will actually eat. Food is big issue in our house.

Then I must remember my elder daughter’s musical instrument on a Friday, make sure I have sent in forms and payments for activities (I paid for forest school last week but forgot to send my permission slip, so the teacher met me at the door one morning!). I must ask the girls what homework they need to do and when. Oh, and most importantly, I must get them out of bed, dressed, fed and into school on time every day, and be available to collect them at home time.

4, Are they getting enough sleep? This is another big issue for my family. My younger daughter doesn’t like to sleep in a room on her own, and she is always too busy to rest, even when she’s poorly. My older daughter is reaching the age where she wants to sit up in bed and do her own thing, and I must learn to trust that she will get enough sleep for her body’s needs. We moved house a few years ago so that the girls could have their own bedrooms. We are now in the process of putting two beds in one room because of our younger daughter not wanting to be on her own. Whether this will work I don’t know, it is an experiment. Wish me luck, I really want my bed back to myself!

5, Should I limit their screen time? Wow, what a 21st century problem this is! I grew up in the 80s, so I did have video games and I do remember being addicted to our Sega Megadrive when I was a similar age to my children. Times have changed and now both girls have their own smartphones. My younger daughter has an old phone of mine that is only connected to Wi-Fi so she can play games and watch YouTube. My older daughter has her own phone number so she can stay in contact with friends and family members.

Since I use my phone, laptop, and Kindle a lot, who am I to judge how much screen time my children should have? I am a lot more relaxed about it since the pandemic as our ability to video call friends has been a lifesaver during those long, lonely months of lockdown. Then there was access to home-schooling, all online. I think ultimately, we need to accept devices as a way of life and an extension of who we are. Let’s try to be sensible and balanced about how we use them and what our children are exposed to.

Mum checklist for older children

Phew! There is a snapshot of the Mum checklist for children aged around 7-10 years. There are way more things that I do everyday but right now my brain has turned to mush, and I can’t remember. It’s a side effect of parenthood. Fellow parents, does this all look familiar to you? Please share your stories in the comments.

#BookReview: “Paranormal Warwickshire” by SC Skillman

Here is my review of “Paranormal Warwickshire” by S.C. Skillman:

#BookReview "Paranormal Warwickshire" by S.C. Skillman reviewed by LGBT fantasy book writer Catherine Green at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
#BookReview “Paranormal Warwickshire” by S.C. Skillman

#BookReview: “Paranormal Warwickshire” by SC Skillman

This is a delightful book that mixes local history with paranormal stories. The author describes local places of interest and includes snippets from Shakespeare plays at the beginning of each chapter as she connects the area with the famous playwright. There are eyewitness accounts of ghostly sightings, strange phenomena and other paranormal occurrences that leaves me wanting to visit the area again soon. This book belongs in every ghost hunter’s personal library!

About the Book

Warwickshire is a county stepped in the supernatural, as befits the county of Shakespeare and the many ghosts and spirits that he conjured up in his works.

The towns and village of Warwickshire, its castles, house, churches, theatres, inns and many other places both grand and everyday have rich and complex stories to tell of paranormal presences.

In this book author SC Skillman investigates the rich supernatural heritage of this county at the heart of England in places such as Guy’s Cliffe House, the Saxon Mill, Kenilworth Castle, Warwick Castle, St Mary’s Church in Warwick, Nash’s House in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and Stoneleigh Abbey, as well as in the towns of Rugby, Nuneaton and Leamington Spa.

She explores the spiritual resonance of each location, recounting the tales of paranormal activity associated with it and examining the reasons for this within the history of the place.

“Paranormal Warwickshire” takes the reader into the world of ghosts and spirits in the county, following their footsteps into the unknown. These tales of haunted places, supernatural happenings and shadowy presences will delight the ghost hunters and fascinate and intrigue everybody who knows Warwickshire.
