My Daughter the Unwitting Wigan FC Supporter

Yes, I know. I am a bad mother. My poor baby daughter is barely 1 year old, and she is being brainwashed into being a supporter for Wigan FC. It is very bad, and totally not my doing.

I cannot stand football. It is boring, I detest the media obsession with it, and I have never forgiven my husband for tricking me when we first started dating.

My Daughter the Unwitting Wigan FC Supporter

“Oh I don’t really like football,” Daniel blithely declared back in our younger days, “I’m more into heavy metal music.” he said. Phew! I could live with that. In fact, I was quite happy to  have a boyfriend who played lead guitar in a rock band. Oh, for those innocent young days!

Fast forward ten years or so, and the rock band is still going, although the line-up has altered slightly. And now I am resigned to the fact that my husband carries a season ticket for Wigan FC, and has done for the past four years. He sort of slipped in his football obsession as our relationship deepened, and now there is no going back.

Wigan FC Young Supporters Club

Anyway, what prompted this article, was a letter my baby daughter received in the mail yesterday. Apparently she is now a member of the Wigan FC Young Supporters Club. She received a copy of their magazine Team Latics. Oh dear.

The poor girl will be brainwashed before she can even talk properly. I only hope that her other granddad doesn’t start signing her up to the Stoke City FC Young Supporters Club, if there is such a thing. Or that her aunty resists the urge to introduce her to Manchester United (although poor Elliot does already own a football strip that I have buried in a drawer in her room). What is it with this football obsession? And when will it end?

Dreaming about Books and my personal Library

“There is a place, not far from here. It resides in my mind, a dream so near.”

My fellow UK based parents may recognise this line that I adapted from a popular children’s television show. I do love to play with words! The place in my mind is my personal library. It is a room where the walls are lined with books from floor to ceiling. The shelves are built of dark, antique wood, most probably bought at a rural antique centre that I enjoy visiting.

Dreaming about Books, and my personal Library

The only parts of my personal library that aren’t lined with books, are the space where there is a large open fireplace, and French windows leading out into my garden. At present this beautiful room is a figment of my imagination, or a part of my subconscious if you believe in realms beyond the physical. There is a thick patterned carpet on the floor, and it is red with a design I have not yet chosen.

Situated between the fireplace and the french windows is my desk. This is also an antique piece of furniture, with a comfortable office chair behind it. On the desk sits my laptop computer, and a pile of books that I am currently reading for both research and pleasure. There is also a pad of paper and a selection of pens. I always need something to write on at short notice.

Near the fireplace, in front of my bookshelves, is a comfortable sofa, probably a two-seater. I will curl up on this when I am not working. It is my sanctuary, my escape from the world. There is a floor lamp nearby, because I don’t really like bright overhead lighting. I prefer a room with shadows and a peaceful atmosphere.

Books up to the ceiling

The only other furniture I envision in my library is a stepladder propped against the bookshelves. Perhaps the room will fill up the more I imagine it. Maybe when it becomes a reality I will find more furniture and more space to utilize. I don’t know. The joy is in the imagining, or the manifestation.

Our mind is a powerful tool. Since I unlocked my creativity and allowed myself to explore the realms of my psyche, I have written 3 novels, several short stories, and numerous articles. I am now writing a fourth novel, and have outlines for three more. Busy times! Now, as soon as my book deal comes through, I will make my dream library a reality when we move house…

Love Hurts on Valentines Day

Does love hurt for you right now? Maybe love shouldn’t hurt on Valentines Day. It should be a beautiful celebration of our love for each other, whether we are  in long-term comfortable relationships, or shorter developing ones.

Read my blog post and join the conversation about whether Valentine’s Day is important and which relationships we should focus on in our personal lives.

Handcrafted Valentine's Day "Love" Card made by Catherine Green of SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Handcrafted Valentine’s Day “Love” Card made by Catherine Green

Love Hurts on Valentines Day

Personally I am not celebrating Valentines Day this year. My husband and I are busy developing our careers and raising a family, and we simply cannot afford an extravagant celebration. We barely have time to see each other these days. I am not sad about it, and our relationship is strong and secure. We accept that there are many years ahead for us to enjoy Valentines celebrations in romantic and indulgent ways.

I wonder how my characters in Love Hurts (The Redcliffe Novels) will celebrate Valentines Day? Without giving too much away, my protagonist Jessica Stone is an independent woman struggling to acknowledge that she has fallen in love. Jack Mason has his own reasons for not wanting or needing a relationship, but finds himself falling for Jessica against his will. As the old saying goes, we cannot help who we fall in love with. It happens, and we deal with it.

Back to Valentine’s Day

Back to the subject of Valentines Day. I am writing the third book in this opening trilogy for the Redcliffe novels series. It will not cover Valentines Day, because all the events happen at the end of summer, between August and October specifically. Perhaps I will write a short story about Jack and Jessica’s Valentines Day. It would certainly be an interesting exercise. There would be some tension with the local werewolves who are inadvertently involved, not to mention another vampire who keeps drawing Jessica’s attention. That is all I will say for now. I do not want to spoil your enjoyment of Love Hurts (The Redcliffe Novels).

Happy Valentines Day everyone!

The Writer Loves Books

OK, the title of this post is perhaps a little silly and I am stating the obvious. There cannot be a writer out there who does not love books, but I am open to comments if you can prove me wrong. Anyway, my point is that I love books. I have always loved books.

As a child, my mother taught me to read, and would take me to our local library every Saturday morning. I would step into that small one storey building full of excitement and happiness, and spend a few hours searching the shelves in the tiny children’s fiction section, picking out my allocated allowance of six books. I would then read them all within a few days, return the following weekend, and do the whole thing again. I loved it!

The Writer Loves Books

Now that I am officially a published author, I feel on top of the world. I have just finished writing my third book, and I immediately started writing a fourth. The words flowed effortlessly, the stories are buzzing round my head, and I am both excited and overwhelmed with it all. But that is only half of my situation. I have an enormous pile of books to be read. That is just the paperbacks, and a couple of hardbacks. On my new Kindle I have something like sixty books or more, including samples. And somehow I ended up back in our local library the other day, and came home with another five books to read. Talk about a sucker for punishment!

This obsessive behavior got me thinking. Perhaps I am addicted to books. I have to touch them, to feel the texture of their covers and smell the familiar library smell of the ones I borrow. Even on my Kindle, I like the sharp definition of text, and the neatly ordered electronic pages. I feel such excitement every time I pick up a book, whether it be fiction or non-fiction. The point is I will learn something from each story, and I will experience new people, new places, and new adventures. I love books. I am a bookaholic. Who’s with me?

Tarot Reading for Imbolc

As part of my celebration of the pagan festival of Imbolc, today I have done a short Tarot reading.

I asked for a message that was relevant to me at this time, and that would also resonate with people who are on a similar spiritual path as myself. That will be anyone who is currently finding their place in the world, who is perhaps trying something new, whether that be in their personal lives, their career, or even their family.

I drew two cards; one represents the recent months of winter and the other represents the coming months of spring.

Image of Gilded Tarot cards on a purple cloth. Text reads "Gilded Tarot Card Reading @SpookyMrsGreen." Gilded Tarot Card Reading by professional Tarot reader Catherine Green of SpookyMrsGreen.com pagan lifestyle blog.
Gilded Tarot Card Reading by Catherine Green

Tarot reading with the Gilded Tarot cards

The first Tarot card I drew was the Nine of Wands. I used the Gilded Tarot because that deck is really representative of my feelings at the moment. It is romantic, mythical and colourful. To me the images alone represent so much power and energy that I feel wonderful just handling the cards. The Nine of Wands tells me that we have been carrying a heavy burden of responsibility and repressive attitudes. Now we have crested the hill, which felt more like a mountain, and we have set down our baggage. We have picked out just one item that is of special importance.

Resting for a moment, we can take a breath and know that all the other burdens can wait. They might all clamour for our attention, and have so far taken a lot of energy and strength from us. Now we can take stock of our situation, and realise that those burdens are really not that important. They can wait, and they will wait. Our battle is over, and we can rest and prepare for the next phase of our journey. The sky is clearing, the storm clouds are blowing away, and the grass is green and fresh. Everything is waking up again, with renewed vigour and energy.

King of Cups

The second Tarot card I drew was the King of Cups. He represents a culmination of our endeavours. We have reached a temporary peace. Our accomplishments have manifested, and we are now resting easy and enjoying the results of our hard work. This phase is temporary only because we will eventually grow bored of it. Then we will strive for something else, a new adventure and a new challenge. For now we are comfortable and content, secure in our achievements.

Having embraced our dreams and actively fought to make them real, the King of Cups shows our rewards. We have our place of delicate beauty, built of our own hard work. But its very fragility reminds us that life is precious. We should appreciate what we have now, and enjoy it without guilt or worry. Our strength has been recognized and rewarded. Life is happy.

How to Celebrate the Pagan festival Imbolc

Today is Imbolc. It is a pagan festival with Northern roots, and this year I decided to formally celebrate it for the first time.

Having been on a spiritual journey for several years, I came to realise that I am pagan. Learning about the worship of gods and goddesses, and the power of our own inner strength and vitality, resonated with me deeply. So today I decided to honour those same gods and goddesses with my own personal celebration.

How to celebrate Imbolc as a pagan newbie

After speaking to other pagans with years of experience, and reading a lot about the subject in various places, the best way for me to celebrate Imbolc was quite a simple one. I lit a single white candle and stood it in a Himalayan rock salt holder. I love crystals, and they feature very prominently in my home. The candle has been burning all day (except when I went out – obviously I don’t want to burn the house down!) and the flame has been steady and strong throughout.

Alongside the lit candle I burned some incense. I chose aloe vera for its cleansing and rejuvenating properties. Imbolc is a festival of growth, fertility and rebirth. It represents the end of winter and the beginning of spring. This was all very relevant to me in my current situation in light of my recent landmark birthday, that of my daughter, and my husband and I both taking the next step on our respective career ladders. Sitting before the candle, which was placed on my altar among my crystals, power animals, and gifts, I meditated for a while.

A bracing canal walk for Imbolc

The weather today has been crisp, fresh and sunny. Although freezing cold, once you were out under the sun it didn’t feel so bad. I went out with my daughter and dog this morning, and took special notice of the bright blue sky above us, the fresh green grass on the verges, and the way the sunlight sparkled on frost particles in sheltered places. I was also very happy to see some fresh new blooms that looked like daffodils. It might be a little early in the season for them, but I always get excited when I see spring flowers growing.

As part of my meditation I drew out two Tarot cards and asked for a message for each that was relevant to Imbolc and my personal journey. The message is also for people who are on the same vibrational frequency as me at this time. That will be people who are discovering their own faith and spiritual paths, who are perhaps beginning a family, and those who are exploring their career options and trying something new and radical. To keep this post from rambling, you can see my Tarot reading separately.

Writing a good Redcliffe Novels Conclusion

For the last week I have been mentally preparing the conclusion for my latest Redcliffe novel Love Kills (The Redcliffe Novels). It follows the story of bookshop owner Jessica Stone as she comes to terms with the revelation that her lover is a vampire, his identical twin brother is a werewolf, and that she is a witch who must now learn to accept her heritage and embrace her newly discovered powers.

The story is set on the rugged coast in Cornwall, England, and I have a host of vampire and werewolf supporting characters, with a few humans and witches thrown in for good measure.

Image of a woman standing between two men who are partly in shadow. All are wearing black clothes and look mysterious. 3D book cover image for "Love Kills (A Redcliffe Novel)" from the vampire and werewolf fantasy book series by LGBT fantasy book writer Catherine Green including phone and iPad download images for tablet, iPhone, and android book readers.

Writing a good Redcliffe Novels Conclusion

The novel writing went very well until I reached the end. Then I began to struggle. I wanted to end the story at a point which leads easily into the third book in my Redcliffe series, but not so that it was too abrupt. While I was away on a short family holiday, I kept repeating the conclusion in my head, and every day it changed slightly. Tonight I finally managed to sit down and actually do the writing.

I was in for a surprise. Once I had settled my daughter in bed, I quickly became engrossed in my work. My fingers flew over the keys, the words appeared as if by magic on the computer before me. And my conclusion to Love Kills (The Redcliffe Novels) began to take shape with a surprisingly dramatic outcome. I still have a little more to write, and I have reached another brick wall of sorts.

But I’m not worried. After a good night’s sleep and a day of household chores, I have no doubt that my muse will be back on fine form tomorrow evening and I will write the perfect conclusion. Bring it on!

Phew, Crazy Birthday Weekend!

It has been a hectic couple of weeks. I have, unfortunately, neglected my writing slightly in favour of giving my house a good clean and preparing for my daughter’s first birthday party. But, it was worth it, because all our invited guests arrived on time (while the birthday girl was still asleep bless her), and we had a lovely party.

I had a wonderful surprise in the form of a beautiful birthday cake made specially for myself and my daughter, to celebrate her 1st birthday, and my 30th, which fell within two days of each other. My in-laws arranged it, and brought it round for the party. I was very touched and almost cried, but I held it together! Here is a picture, and this is my favourite wild animal:

Crazy Birthday Weekend!

Although I was exhausted from arranging everything, my friends and family were a huge help, for which I thank them greatly. I was also touched when my friends asked about my books and my current projects. They are genuinely interested, and are following my progress with lots of love and support, which is fantastic.

One friend in particular gave me a wonderful compliment, even though he probably doesn’t realise it. He said that when he read my novel Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel). it isn’t just a normal romance story. He told me that to him it has more activity, and more sub plots which kept his interest.

What really made me happy was when he told me he likened my book to the Hollywood film Avatar. He said that Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel), like Avatar, has a love story within it, but that isn’t the central theme and therefore it appeals to a greater audience. Now you, my writer friends, will understand exactly how ecstatic I am to hear that!

The Redcliffe Novels Trilogy Inspiration

This morning I felt a mild sense of panic when I realised that once I finish editing Love Kills (A Redcliffe Novel) and send it off to the publisher, I will then need to start writing the third Redcliffe book.

At the time it was only a vague idea in my head, sort of following on from the latest instalment that I just wrote. Determined not to be perturbed, I put the panic out of my mind and sent out a silent plea to my muse.

The Redcliffe Novels Trilogy Inspiration

After lunch I finally dragged myself away from the computer and decided to take myself, the baby and the dog out for our daily walk. The weather was beautiful. It was sunny and fairly mild for a January day in England. We strolled along by the canal, my daughter chattering away happily in her pushchair, the dog running off ahead exploring the undergrowth.

My mind wandered as I stared out at the water, and I admired the way the sunshine reflected in warm colours of orange, yellow, and even hints of blue on the gently rippling surface. There were no boats moored up in their usual spots, which surprised me, but then I remembered, it is winter. We continued on our walk, following the gentle sweep of the recently resurfaced towpath, and we didn’t encounter anybody else on our way.

Mentally writing the next book

And then it hit me. I was mentally organizing my current edit of Love Kills (A Redcliffe Novel), and then I started to think about what would happen next to Jessica Stone and Jack and Danny Mason. The story suddenly panned out in my head, clear and exciting and ready to be written. Hallelujah! My muse has spoken, and my prayers have been answered. As soon as Love Kills (A Redcliffe Novel) has been dispatched, I will get started on the next book, as yet untitled.

But that wasn’t all. I was in luck today, and it must have been the sunshine drawing out my inspiration. Not only did I mentally prepare the third Redcliffe book, but an idea for the fourth one started to grow as well.  And it sounds good! And then, to top it off, I came up with a plot for a completely separate novel featuring a character that appeared in another novel. She is a powerful and ancient vampire, and I now have a clear idea of where she came from, and how her story should be told.

A successful, productive walk

All in all, it was a very successful walk. I feel refreshed and invigorated to continue my work, the dog is happy after running round like a puppy and playing with sticks. And my daughter had some fresh air and a little stimulation as she saw the ducks, the water, and the beautiful countryside in which we live. Clearly I was brought to live in Middlewich by some sort of divine intervention!

If you haven’t yet read Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel), get it now for Kindle on special offer until the end of January!
