Preparing for Change as we approach Summer Solstice

We are approaching the Summer Solstice, the middle of the year, and once again time seems to be flying by at an ever-increasing speed. My mood seems to be quite changeable this week, probably due in part to pregnancy hormones.

I recently had a slight crisis about my spiritual journey, worrying that I was not doing everything I should be. I soon realised that there are no rules and regulations when you travel the shaman path. You do what feels right, honour the seasons and your friends and family, and it all follows naturally.

Preparing for Change as we approach Summer Solstice

This week my mood has turned to the sales of my books. I am still chasing the dream to become an international bestselling author. I also understand that I need to try some new approaches in the way that I market my books, in order to increase my chances of being seen by the right people at the right time. There are lots of little activities I can do, mainly online, to increase my readership and reach out to people. I also need help, and at the moment I am trying to figure out where that might come from.

Of course, the biggest change I am preparing for is the birth of my second child. The baby is due in July, and so now I am beginning to think about planning my workload so I can take time out to focus on my new baby while still showing attention to my toddler. I also need to sort out the more practical arrangements, such as fetching the newborn baby clothes down from our loft. That is a job for my husband on his next day off work! In the meantime I am having to listen to my body and get some rest, or as much as possible while I am at home being Mother and Housewife.

A funny time of year

It is a funny time of year, both exciting and a little sad. We say goodbye to people as they pass away, we meet new people as our journeys twist and turn, and we rethink our attitudes and assumptions about the lives that we lead. What is changing for you at this time? How do you feel about it? I am mainly feeling a kind of excited anticipation, because I know that my life is improving a little bit more every day. Be strong, be brave, and be happy!

For My Husband, Daniel Green

Today is my wedding anniversary. Yes, I am going to show some public affection for my husband!

Mr and Mrs Green on their wedding day at Chester Zoo

For My Husband, Daniel Green

I married Daniel Green on this date in 2010, at Oakfield House, Chester Zoo, and three years on we continue to grow from strength to strength. Our relationship began way back in late 2000, when we were just teenagers embarking on adulthood. We’ve had our trials and tests, but we got through them, and we will keep getting through whatever is thrown at us as the years progress.

I’m not given to flashy shows of emotion, and Daniel most certainly isn’t. But I am a writer, I have something to say, and so I am sharing on here. I love you, Daniel, and I couldn’t be happier in our marriage as we approach the birth of our second child. All those little domestic niggles just make for a more exciting ride! Happy Anniversary Daniel!

I need a Camper Van!

I have always loved camper vans. Especially the classic VW van that is commonly associated with hippies and free spirits. Hmm, wonder why I want one then?

My granddad acquired such a camper van when I was a teenager. It was beautiful, although it needed some repair work. My best friend and I wanted to decorate the van, and paint flowers all over it! Unfortunately, my granddad sold the van before either of us could pass our driving tests. He said it would have been too difficult to drive as a first car. Oh well!

I need a Camper Van!

Anyway, the dream has been kept alive in the recesses of my mind, and one day I intend to make it a reality. This intention was further compounded after our recent holiday to the Scottish Highlands. We passed so many people in camper vans who would just park up at the side of the road when they felt like it, and go off exploring. I love the idea of having that kind of freedom. I also decided it would be fun to do the End to End challenge from Lands’ End to John O’Groats in a camper van. It would be a darn sight easier than cycling the route, that‘s for sure!

Setting my intention to the Universe

At the moment I do not have sufficient finance to afford a camper van. I will do soon enough. My intention is out there to the Universe. My van is waiting for me, somewhere. I just have to find it. Unfortunately I don’t think a traditional VW camper van will be sufficient for my current needs. I could with something larger, that can fit two adults, two children and one crazy dog… Let us see what transpires.

I look forward to the day when I can pile the kids into the van and just drive off on a wild adventure around the UK!

#BookReview: “Urban Shaman” by Serge Kahili King

Recently I feel that my spiritual work has faded into the background of my life. This is mainly because I have been focusing my attention on being a mother, nurturing a baby, and working on my writing projects.

All of that didn’t stop me from feeling guilty, and even frustrated, about my lack of spiritual working. But what exactly does it mean to do spiritual work?

See my book review for “Urban Shaman” by Serge Kahili King and discover how it helped me back into connection with Spirit.

#BookReview Urban Shaman article by Catherine Green of SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.

What it Means to be a Shaman

I call myself a shaman in training. In truth, I suppose we never stop learning as we progress through our human lives, interacting with different people and situations, and taking away new perspectives and meaning from our activities. I am not currently following any formal training structure. I am merely being aware of my surroundings, picking up bits of information as and when I can, and reading up on different shaman practices and belief systems.

One book I am currently reading is “Urban Shaman” by Serge Kahili King, PHD. A friend bought me the book for my birthday earlier this year, and I was surprised and touched by her gesture. I understand that many people might struggle to understand how to behave around a person who practices shamanism, witchcraft and paganism when these are taboo subjects within the culture that we live. Fortunately for me, friends and family are supportive of my interests, and some are more interested to learn from what I have studied so far.

Yes, I am a shaman in Britain

Finally, I realise that yes, I am a shaman. Just because I don’t dress a certain way, carry various mystical implements, or actively practise rituals and ceremonies, does not mean I do not believe in this ancient system of life. A shaman is basically a healer. That is what we do. There are many different shaman systems of practice and belief that have been developed all around the world. I am currently reading about the Hawaiian tradition in “Urban Shaman,” and already I recognize a lot of the material as practices that I have been doing for years.

For now my life as a shaman revolves around my family. I have a toddler to care for, and a new baby on the way. I will both learn from my children, and teach them how to integrate and develop in the human world based on my own experiences and beliefs. I also have a husband who tends to overwork himself, so he needs some regular healing, albeit very subtle on my behalf! So there we go. I can stop being so hard on myself. When it comes to natural practices, there are no set rules and regulations. We do what feels natural, and we live in accordance to Mother Nature and the Great Spirit of life that exists all around the world.

My Review of “Urban Shaman” by Serge Kahili King

A friend bought me this book as a birthday gift, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. At the time I was concerned that my shaman activities were not progressing as they should, but now I feel calm, confident and filled with renewed enthusiasm about my life journey. If you are curious about what it is to be a shaman, then this is a good book to start with. It is easy to read, does not dictate a strict regime or spiritual practise, and gives you plenty to think about and explore in your own time. If you are already a practising shaman, this book serves as a useful resource for reference and alternative cultural practices.

End to End Cycle Ride: John O’Groats and we are Finished!

Well, my father-in-law and his friends successfully completed the End to End cycle ride from Lands’ End to John O’Groats. They cycled approximately 1015 miles up the length of England and Scotland, and the journey took them 14 days.

End to End Cycle Ride: John O’Groats and we are Finished!

I travelled up to the Scottish Highlands with my husband, daughter and mother-in-law to meet the team as they arrived. Our drive took around 11 hours (including rest stops) from Cheshire to Sutherland, and then a further 2 hours the next day taking us to John O’Groats. That alone was hard work, so I cannot imagine how tough it was on a bike, carrying your own luggage, and battling the extremes of weather that the men experienced.

One thing I can say, the long journey was worth it! We discovered the hidden treasures of Northern Scotland, including some fabulous sandy beaches and beautiful bright blue coves. Fortunately for us the sun came out for the weekend, the wind was mild, and we enjoyed some time wandering around the town of Thurso, along with some stops during our drive to take photos of the places we travelled through.

End to End Cycle Ride: Wild Scotland

End to End Cycle Ride: Wild Scotland

My father-in-law and his cycling buddies have done an amazing journey through torrential rain, hail and snow storms, and mostly high winds as they battled through Scotland to reach their end target of John O’Groats. It’s a far cry from Lands’ End in Cornwall, where their cycle ride began 2 weeks ago!

As they reach their final destination on the evening of Sunday 26th May 2013, we have travelled up (by car, nice and easy!) to share a celebratory meal and hear about their adventures.

Here is a snapshot of the journey through Scotland up as far as Glen Coe:

Getting Uncomfortable Now at Seven Months Pregnant

Just a short post today, in the interests of keeping a regular interaction over here. I am about to enter into the final 2 months of my pregnancy, and blimey am I feeling it!

During the past three days I have been experiencing Braxton Hicks, excruciating pain in the pelvic area, and my baby continues to roll and kick almost continually.

Getting Uncomfortable Now at Seven Months Pregnant

I love being pregnant despite the pain. I love feeling my baby move around in my stomach, I love watching the way my belly bounces up and down, and how it continually changes shape as my child stretches and wriggles around. What is most surprising, is just how different this pregnancy is compared to my first one. I do not remember my first baby being quite so active (although she certainly makes up for it now!). The experience is bizarre and fascinating.

Unfortunately, my writing schedule has faltered a little during the past week, because I have been exhausted and in pain, and have had to take time out to rest where possible. However, events are unfolding fast, and I am beginning to think I need to crack on with editing the two first draft manuscripts in my project pile, and I am still working on the novel in progress that has been abandoned by my Muse.

Holiday Diaries: Sundrum Castle Holiday Park, Scotland

I recently went on holiday with my daughter, my friend and her son for a week. We left our husbands at home, since neither would agree to arrange time off work!

It was a lovely holiday, and we packed a lot of activity into a few days. In fact, I need another holiday now just to recover! My 2 year-old daughter and her 3 year-old friend had great fun, and we were pleasantly surprised with the holiday park.

Sundrum Castle Holiday Park, Scotland

Sundrum Castle is operated by Parkdean Holidays and is situated in Ayrshire, roughly a ten minute drive to the town centre of Ayr and the adjacent sandy beach and extensive shoreline. We stayed in a caravan and it was many years since I had used such accommodation. In fact, I don’t think I had stayed in a caravan since I holidayed with my parents and siblings as a child! Anyway, our caravan was clean, spacious and very well equipped with everything we needed.

The holiday park is surrounded by woodland, and while we didn’t find time to explore the nature walks (mainly due to my rather heavily pregnant situation), it looked very enticing. There is also a wild animal trail. You can collect fact sheets and activity sheets from the reception office, and head off into the woods in search of animals and birds. The site is also very peaceful and tranquil since it is not located near to any busy roads or industrial areas. We enjoyed quiet nights and the beauty of the birds singing every morning.

Indoor swimming pool

There is an indoor swimming pool on site, with a flume that my friend and her son enjoyed using. There is a small but adequate amusement arcade, a decent restaurant and bar, a games room and outdoor adventure playground with adjacent patio seating for parents and carers. We made use of the small on site supermarket, and there is also a takeaway restaurant but we didn’t sample the food while we were there. Just outside the holiday park is a small town and a convenience store, fish and chip shop and pizza/curry takeaway shop.

All in all, I was very impressed with our holiday accommodation. The site was located ideally for quick access to the beach and a decent shopping centre. It was quiet and peaceful when we needed it, without feeling isolated from suburban life. There were enough facilities to keep us all occupied, and we found plenty of external places to visit that were within easy travelling distance. More to follow on those expeditions later.

The Liebster Award: I’ve Been Nominated!

I was pleasantly surprised this morning to find I had been nominated for the Liebster Award by my author friend and Prince of Horror, Alex Laybourne. Thank you Alex!

The Liebster Award for blogging at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
The Liebster Award for blogging

The Liebster Award: I’ve Been Nominated!

Apparently the rules of this award keep changing, so I will follow Alex’s instructions in this instance:

1. Answer this simple question
2. State 7 random facts about yourself
3. Recommend other bloggers for the award

The Question

Alex’s question was “If you could be killed by a movie serial killer, who would it be and why?”

Hmm, that’s a tough one, since I don’t really like the idea of being killed by a movie serial killer! Well, if it has to be done, can I be a little obscure and say I would choose David from The Lost Boys? The renegade vampire is definitely a serial killer, although maybe not an obvious one. And let’s face it, which hot-blooded female would not be charmed by Kiefer Sutherland in any incarnation? Ha!

7 Random Facts About Myself

I am pregnant with my second child.
I love dogs, especially my gorgeous Staffydoodle, Baxter.
My fourth novel has just been approved for publication.
I am just a little bit obsessed with the UK TV series Being Human.
I used to work in a theme park.
I am a redhead and proud of it!
I am a recently graduated ‘Big Sister’ role model for Girls Out Loud.

My Nominees

Cycling Phoenix
Haven’s Realm
Flossie Benton Rogers
Pearly Queen Notebook
Three, Six, Five Days of Life

Over to You

There we are! So, to my fellow nominees, I challenge you to share your random facts, nominate some blogs that you follow, and to answer this question: Do you prefer the beach, the mountains or the countryside during summer?

Thanks for playing!

A Journey to Recovery and the Big Bike Ride

Today I am sharing the story of someone close to me who I admire greatly. It is my father-in-law, Steven Green. He is a colourful and very loud character (and he will laugh at me for saying this!), he has lived an adventurous life that shows no sign of easing up, and now he is embarking on his greatest challenge to date.

In just one week’s time, on Monday 13th May 2013, Steve will set off on a 1000 mile cycle ride from Lands’ End in Cornwall, to John O’Groats in Scotland. Accompanied by his cycling companions Tom and Nick, he will travel the length of England and Scotland in the ultimate test of endurance and perseverance.

End-to-End Cycle Ride Challenge from Lands’ End to John O’Groats

A Journey to Recovery and the Big Bike Ride

The ride was initially organised as a charity event, although I am not sure that came to fruition for reasons beyond the cyclists’ control. However, the men decided they would continue with their plan, because they have been bitten by the cycling bug, it keeps them fit, and they enjoy their rides immensely. In 2012 they did the Coast to Coast cycle ride, travelling from St Bees in Cumbria across the width of England to Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire. In 2011 they cycled from Blackpool Tower in Lancashire to the Macmillan Hospice in Stoke-on-Trent.

What makes this epic cycle ride even more impressive is the fact that in January 2013, Steven was involved in a very serious road traffic accident. It was a quiet Sunday morning, one week before his granddaughter’s second birthday. He set of with his friends from the Cheadle Cycle Club, and they were heading out of town on a routine training ride. Steven had to stop at the roadside to repair a minor issue with his gears. He was hit from behind by a car travelling up the road. The female driver had not cleared her windscreen of frost and never saw the cyclists in front of her. Steven hit the windscreen and was thrown up in the air, landing in the ditch at the side of the road.

Shock phone call

Imagine my shock when I received the phone call from my sister-in-law later that day. I was at home with our daughter, and my husband was at work. My sister-in-law briefly told me what had happened and that she was at the local hospital emergency department with her mum and dad. She is a firefighter by profession, and when she received the phone call that Steven had been involved in an accident, she feared the worst, having witnessed things that she would rather not share with us on a personal level.

Steven had suffered extensive injuries, from which he is still recovering. The accident has forced him into early retirement from his job as a professional portrait and wedding photographer. He can no longer walk properly due to the injuries on his right leg, but with a lot of training and physiotherapy, he is able to cycle more easily. He has had to adapt his bike for the purpose, and can never cycle as quickly or effectively as he did before. He suffered injuries all over his body, and one of the worst ones was a fractured jaw. The result of that one is permanent numbness on one side of his face and he has a metal plate in his jaw.

I’m a proud daughter-in-law

I am writing this post to say well done Steve, I am extremely proud of you for overcoming your challenges, and I cannot wait to see you at the finish line in John O’Groats on 26th May. It goes without saying that your son, Daniel, is also very proud of you, and your granddaughter, Elliot, looks forward to taking her balance bike out with you later in the summer.

If you would like to see Steven’s story in more detail, read his blog, Cycling Phoenix.
