2020: The Year that Never Happened

Phew! We made it to the end of 2020. Well, some of us made it. My condolences to those who are grieving for loved ones lost to Covid this year. And those lost to other illness or accidents.

It has been a long and lonely year for me, as I finally realised that my marriage had collapsed during the first lockdown. I had to stay strong for my children, but I admit I did break down on regular occasions. I’m only human.

2020: The Year that Never Happened

My Reiki practice reached new heights this year. Despite the pressure of home schooling, training our rescue dog, redecorating the house (I started that in 2019 and refused to leave it until it was done), I kept up my practice because it was vital to my survival at the time. Were it not for Reiki and the regular Zoom meetings with my teacher and fellow students, I know I would have ended up in a very fragile situation. I am proud to have achieved my Reiki Master Practitioner and Teacher certification in Autumn 2020, and I look forward to developing my part-time business as we move into the new year.

Even though we spent most of the year at home, I feel we have been busy. My children and I tried to make the most of our time in lockdown. We tried homeschooling but they informed me in no uncertain terms that I am not a teacher, our home is not school, and they could not do their schoolwork in the same way. We settled for a bit of basic maths and English, lots of reading, occasional science projects, a bit of baking and a lot of creative crafts. When they returned to school it felt good to get back in routine but we are now are recovering from an exhausting Autumn term.

Life happens regardless

Life happens regardless of what goes on around us. My children and I have all dealt with minor health concerns throughout the year. We have argued, cuddled, shouted, and played together. We spent time with friends when it was allowed. We enjoyed canalside walks and outdoor coffee shop meetings. I made the most of time alone when they were back in school, and I have worked hard at my freelance businesses.

How did you find 2020? Were you busy at home, did you carry on as normal throughout, or did you completely change your lifestyle habits? Let’s share our stories…

Tarot Card Reading for New Year

Making sense of our situation as we move into 2021. Life, coronavirus, lockdown and everything else.

Today I bring you the Cross Tarot Spread, and a Tarot card reading with my Vampires Tarot of the Eternal Night card deck. These cards are beautiful, dark and desolate, but they are not all miserable and depressing. There is light in the darkness, as this reading foretells.

Vampires Tarot of the Eternal Night Tarot cards Tarot card reading on purple cloth SpookyMrsGreen.com pagan lifestyle blog.
Vampires Tarot of the Eternal Night

Tarot Card Reading for New Year

1, Yesterday: What led to the current situation

Eight of Swords – Bound. Solitude. This card shows something held captive against its will. There is a familiar feeling with this creature. We have been instructed to stay at home and save lives while the coronavirus pandemic worsens here in the UK. We have had a series of local lockdowns, various restrictive measures introduced in different counties, and a general feeling of abandonment and loneliness. We are forced into solitude, isolated by an invisible enemy. We feel angry and bitter.

2, Tomorrow: The Immediate Future

Ten of Swords – Dreams. We have all sacrificed something during 2020. Many of us had to postpone our dream holidays, wait to move house, or even move back in with parents and leave behind a life just started. Some have lost people they shared dreams with. Others have birthed new dreams during isolation. Some have let go of an old way of life to make way for a new one. Tomorrow is a better day.

3, What is hidden: Events or facts that you are not aware of

The Wheel of Fortune – Cycles. I got shivers when I studied this card. It has a personal message for me. There is a bigger picture here. As the wheel turns and we watch life pass us by, what do we learn? What have we learned during the pandemic? I choose not to worry about what may or may not happen. I believe that this is part of a cycle, and we humans will eventually learn about ourselves and the way we respond to situations. We don’t really know what is happening with the pandemic. We each have a personal experience. This is a vision quest, a chance to look within while we are separated from our fellow human beings, and to find ourselves in the truest sense.

4, What is known: Events or facts that you are aware of

The Sun – Happiness. We do know that the sun will rise again. Oddly enough, we have enjoyed a surprise fall of snow in the UK this week. Here in Cheshire we rarely have snow, and certainly not enough to play in. It landed just close enough to call this season a white Christmas, and it brought some cheer to our lives. Mother Nature knows what to do. We know that the pandemic will not last forever. It will continue to disrupt our lives in 2021, but we will learn to live with it. We smile, we make jokes, we see the brighter side in an otherwise dark situation. Live in the moment and cherish each precious memory and warm feeling.

5, The Path: The Tarot’s Advice

The Empress – Creation. Forget the wider world right now. Look within. Are you living from the heart, or the head, or both? If you are naturally creative, then unleash your gifts. Even if you don’t share them with the world, you will feel better for practicing your craft, whatever that might be. If you are naturally intellectual, then have some fun with it. Engage with your peers. Set the world to rights. Express yourself and the world will open up and feel a little less stifling.

6, The Truth: The Response

Seven of Pentacles – Reward. What are you working on right now? Perhaps you are a parent focused on supporting your children through the pandemic. Maybe you are involved in developing vaccines or treatments for today’s modern diseases. It might be difficult to see a reward for your hard work just yet but take satisfaction in the process. Each step is precious and moves your closer to your goal. Keep nurturing your dreams. Believe in yourself. Surround yourself with supportive people. Happy New Year!

Time Management; Writing a Book while Watching the Baby

Are you good at time management? I struggle with it, but somehow I managed to write a book while caring for a newborn baby. I am quite proud of my achievement!

Read my blog post to see how I launched my writing career as a new mother with parental responsibilities.

Writing a Book while Watching the Baby

I have a growing fan base after receiving several rave reviews for my debut paranormal romance novel Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel) I started work on the sequel, but got distracted with a separate novel entitled The Darkness of Love. This novel follows the origins of my secondary Redcliffe character, the vampire Marcus Scott. It took more work than I originally anticipated, although I can be forgiven since I started writing it when I was pregnant, and then of course, had to deal with childbirth and being a new mother.

I did not want to miss precious time with my baby as she grew, especially after all of the advice I had been given from other mums. But at some point, I had to accept that the writing career is my job. Yes, I do it for pleasure. I need to tell my stories, otherwise my head would explode. But I do want to earn a living from it and contribute financially to the household income. I dream about being a famous author, and I am still writing alongside all of my other distractions.

Time management for work and home

Another complication is the age-old task of housework. I do not understand how people manage it! That in itself is a full-time job, when you factor in all the grocery shopping, preparing food, cooking food, washing dishes, doing the laundry, and the actual cleaning. It’s just too much! I am no Stepford Wife. I will never have a spotless house. This is compounded by the presence of my children, my ‘filth wizard’ husband (reference to television comedy Black Books), and our crazy dog who likes to destroy soft toys.

I finally decided it was time to be strict. My elder daughter was a well-behaved baby and slept through the night from a young age. During that time, I would go to bed earlier and get up earlier, even as the mornings grew colder with the onslaught of winter. I decided to stop complaining about my jobs, stop mucking about daydreaming, and actually get down to the business of work. It is still a work in progress. I did write my second novel, and my third, fourth and fifth, with a few extras on the side. I am now working on my sixth Redcliffe novel while developing a professional lifestyle blog and a Reiki practitioner business. I have no time for any more babies!

Will the NHS Help Me?

I am feeling quite low with regards to my health. Earlier this year I decided to transfer my specialist treatment from Manchester Royal Eye Hospital to Mid Cheshire Hospitals, making it easier for me to travel to appointments.

I did this on the advice of one particular doctor who I saw with my young daughter when she was treated earlier this year. He genuinely took an interest in my rare genetic eye condition, and he wanted to be my doctor. So, I requested a transfer.

NHS Hospitals Manchester Royal Eye Hospital visited by Catherine Green at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
NHS Hospitals Manchester Royal Eye Hospital

Will the NHS Help Me?

Unfortunately, due to my mistake, I missed my first appointment with this doctor. I had requested to see him at my local hospital in Crewe, but I forgot that there is a hospital in Northwich under the same NHS trust, and the letter I received directed me to Northwich. I misread the letter and took myself off to the Crewe hospital. Whoops! At the time I laughed about it but now I regret my mistake. In my defence, I phoned the admissions department at Mid Cheshire Hospitals prior to the appointment, and they did not intervene when I mentioned the wrong hospital during the conversation, so I believe the letter hadn’t made it clear, especially for someone with an eye disorder that makes it difficult to read certain texts.

Anyway, I did see a doctor in the emergency eye clinic who at first appeared quite brusque but softened when she saw how bad my eyes really are. They are covered with scratches and scars, but this is not visible to the naked eye. She prescribed me some antibiotic ointment which helped and referred me for a follow-up appointment six weeks later. That happened early in December, and that is the reason why I now feel depressed and helpless regarding my medical care in the NHS.

The doctor I saw in December barely touched me during our consultation. I tried to explain my symptoms and what I believed needed to be done, and he dismissed me, saying it was something else and I should simply go home and use my overnight eye ointment during the day whenever it was convenient. Considering that I work from home using a computer every day, I have children that need transporting to and from school, and I have lots of other domestic and professional commitments, this is far from ideal. The appointment at Leighton Hospital on that particular day was a complete waste of my time. I came home and treated myself in my bedroom, like I have done for the past twenty years. And it hurts.

Symptoms of Stress

I experienced chest pain back in June that took me to A&E. The doctors couldn’t diagnose a problem at the time, but they were concerned about my rapid heartbeat. They decided not to admit me overnight due to the Covid risk and sent me home with vague suggestions to change my lifestyle. There was no follow-up from my GP except for a standard letter regarding a scan that I had. This chest pain happened again just before Christmas. It wasn’t as severe, but I found myself completely unable to contact my GP or to visit the local hospital because I just felt it was a waste of time and my children need me to be there after school.

Do I have mild depression? I have never been diagnosed with mental illness. Nobody ever made a fuss about my eye condition when I was a child, so I grew up with it being a normal part of my life. More recently I recognise just how much time I have spent dealing with my condition for all those years, alongside working, parenting, caring for family and other responsibilities. This year I would have visited my mum for regular care during the school holidays. She always makes me rest while she looks after the children. That didn’t happen due to the pandemic, and I think it has brought me down in my overall health. I am stressed because there is nobody here to step in and do something. My husband doesn’t care. We are now separated because of his lack of support. It’s just me and my children. And a distant NHS service that sometimes helps but mostly just patches me up in an emergency.

I think what I’m trying to say here is that we all need help from time to time. Many of us feel lonely, and I have exhausted myself trying to stay positive and be cheerful because my situation really isn’t that bad. My eye condition won’t kill me, but it hurts all the time. It is relentless. And I just want some empathy from those close by. I need support. And I don’t know where to find it.

What more can I say on this magical day? It has been a crazy year with the pandemic, the lockdowns, social distancing, and social change like we have never seen in our lifetime. Pubs were closed (some still are), social lives are severely restricted, visiting of family and friends has reduced to countryside or seaside walks with no indoor gatherings. What do we have to be cheerful about? We are here. We are alive. We have our health, our homes, our family and friends. Today I am celebrating Christmas with my daughters and dog, cuddling on the sofa, playing with our new toys, and eating lots of good food. What more could we need? Merry Christmas, everybody!

We Still Won’t Forget You, Grandad

Many people are grieving this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Others are grieving for lost loved ones, myself included.

Five years ago, I wrote the following words after the death of my Nanna H:

We Still Won’t Forget You, Grandad

We Still Won’t Forget You, Grandad

“As we approach Christmas this year, I find myself with mixed emotions. I am grieving for the very recent loss of my grandmother, who I was fortunate to have in my life for over thirty-three years. Her death was partly expected, but still very sudden, given that she spent time in hospital before her body succumbed to old age. She leaves behind my Grandad, her husband of nearly sixty years. He is disabled following a series of strokes, and my Nan was his carer at their home. While she was in hospital, he spent time in a nursing home, but now he has returned to their bungalow, alone. He thinks we will forget about him.”

Grandad died just before Christmas in 2017. His birthday was Christmas Eve, and when we were children, I remember big family gatherings every year as we celebrated birthdays and Christmas combined. Those memories are precious, and they are the reason why I love Christmas. Earlier this year my other Grandad died, just before the national lockdown in March. He had been ill for a long time and we didn’t expect him to make it through last Christmas, but he hung in. His military training must have assisted.

One remaining grandparent

Now only my Nanna G remains, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, albeit quietly at home in the socially distanced company of neighbours and some close family members. I was upset not to be with her, but we spoke on the phone and I will hopefully see her from a distance over Christmas. This is the first Christmas that Nan will spend alone in her long life. She has a large family, but some older family members and her beloved son have now passed on. Her dogs died during the pandemic and that ends another lifetime commitment. My Nan and Grandad rescued and nurtured many stray dogs over the years, including an emaciated abandoned pregnant crossbreed who was in an extremely poor state. They nursed Maggie back to health and she birthed all her puppies successfully. One became my sister’s dog and stayed with his mother at our grandparents’ house.

This Christmas might be small and quiet, but the memories are loud and busy in my mind. What are your memories of Christmas? How different does it look this year?

5 Simple Self-Care Routines for Improved Health and Wellbeing

Here are 5 simple self-care routines that you can practice at home to ensure good health and improve your physical wellbeing.

Healthy Balance Spirit Body Mind take care of your health by Catherine Green at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Healthy Balance Spirit Body Mind

5 Simple Self-Care Routines for Improved Health and Wellbeing

1, Drink water

This is such a simple practice and yet one that so many people overlook when they feel unwell. Water is freely available in the Western world, and yet we seem to favour hot drinks and fizzy pop. Try to drink a glass of water with your meals or balance your coffee intake with water throughout the day.

2, Deep breathing exercise

Stop what you are doing. Put down your phone or tablet. Close your eyes. Breathe in deeply, bringing the breath from as low down in your body as you can. Hold for a few seconds. And release. Repeat this a few times until you feel your body begin to relax. Your heart rate will slow down, your mind will slow down, and you will feel better.

3, Check your Hearing

It might sound obvious, but many people overlook the importance of ear care and eye care. You might like to consider booking an appointment with a specialist if you have struggled to hear properly recently or you feel that something isn’t quite right. Auris Ear Care can provide expert guidance to diagnose an ear infection or disorder.

4, Sleep Better

Many people struggle to sleep well. Try listening to soothing music as you fall asleep, perhaps a meditation playlist or relaxing sounds. I find our Alexa Echo Dot device very helpful when I’m struggling. Avoid eating and drinking unhealthy foods close to bedtime. Try to drink water at least an hour before you go to bed so that you can clear the toxins (make sure you go to the toilet!)

5, Eat more Mindfully

Be aware of the food you consume. I notice that when I eat more stodgy food such as bread and pasta it affects my bowel movements and leaves me feeling bloated and uncomfortable. It helps if you can balance your meals with lighter foods, more vegetables and fruit for nutrients, and try to eat less processed meals if possible. Balance and moderation are key here.

Tell me if you find these practices helpful and share your tips in the comments.

A Chronic Pain Christmas #spoonie

My eyes are bothering me again. The weather has turned stormy, and whenever we have strong wind, my Dry Eye Syndrome worsens. Whenever we have a dry spell, my Dry Eye Syndrome worsens. In fact, most of the weather extremes we have in the UK affect my eye condition one way or the other.

Mostly I just don’t make enough natural tears to protect my eyes, and I keep pulling out my eyelashes because they hurt. I have congenital distichiasis (ingrowing eyelashes).

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

A Chronic Pain Christmas

Pain has been a part of me for all my life. As a child I endured many medical procedures to remove ingrowing eyelashes, and as an adult they continued, along with some experimental surgery. The most extreme of these was eyelid rotation surgery on both eyes that I had twelve years ago. During the time since then I have been diagnosed with blepharitis and loads of other random eye complaints that I can’t even pronounce. Every time I visited the Royal Manchester Eye Hospital for a check-up, the doctor would mention something new, or something I hadn’t been informed about before. I am a medical mystery. And it hurts.

Some days the pain is so intense that I want to rip my eyes from their sockets just to make it stop. Other days I can barely keep my eye open because an eyelash is scratching the cornea, or my scars are inflamed, or something else is bothering me but I have no idea what it is. My vision will sometimes blur even after I use eyedrops to try and soothe the pain. And I use ointment every night, because if I don’t, my eyelids would stick together with crusty stuff and it would be even more painful to wake up with. Instead I wake up with a greasy face, unless all the ointment has been sucked into my skin overnight. I am a glamorous woman!

Meditation to relieve eye pain

The only thing that has helped relieve my pain in recent years is meditation, and more specifically, reiki energy healing. I have read stories about people who managed to cure their illness or disorder with energy healing, but so far that hasn’t happened to me. I went through a period of anger and unhappiness about this fact, until I realised that there is so much more to these situations. My condition is genetic. I was born with it, but I was only diagnosed at around the age of 2 when my brother presented with the same symptoms and my mum battled doctors to get some answers. Since then, I have only been treated to the best of medical science at a given time. This spans through the 1980s, 90s, 00s and to the present day. I have seen an increase in treatment options and products to help alleviate my eye pain during the past ten years.

Learning to work with reiki healing energy has helped to give me some perspective on my health. Outwardly I seem healthy and normal. You might wonder why I wear sunglasses in winter, or why I walk round the supermarket wearing them sometimes (I am super sensitive to light), but otherwise I appear normal. The doctors never made a fuss about my condition, and I never let it affect my lifestyle. I learned to drive, I worked full time jobs, I am a writer by profession, and I learned to work through the eye pain. Reiki helps me to relax, it calms my mind when the pain is particularly bad, and it offers a distraction from the physical disorder of my body. Reiki takes my mind and my spirit to another plane, where I feel nothing, and I don’t have to consciously think about anything. That is how it helps me. Thank you, reiki, and thank you, Great Spirit, for your support and guidance in an often-painful human world.

How To Prepare Your Children For Their First Pet Dog

So you’ve decided to get a pet dog for your family home, and you’re looking to get yourself prepared? There’s plenty to think about, and one of the most important things to do is to prepare your children.

To help you out, consider these five simple hints.

How To Prepare Your Children For Their First Pet Dog

1. Talk about responsibility

Before you bring home a new dog it’s vital to chat to your children about responsibility. Your kids will need to appreciate what it means to own an animal, and understand every duty that’s expected. Create a chore chart so that your children know when they will need to help with walking, feeding etc. At this stage, ensure that you ask them if they have any questions, and help them to learn as much as possible.

2. Ensure they know the rules

You’ll need to establish some ground rules to ensure that your kids know how they should treat the dog. Set rules for play time, so that both your children and the dog remain safe. Ensure they know what they can and cannot feed the dog. They must understand there are human certain foods which are toxic to dogs. Some dogs have sensitive stomachs and so may require a special brand such as Burgess Sensitive Dog Food.

With a clear set of rules, you’ll have peace of mind when leaving your kids alone with your new pet.

3 . A little practice

Perhaps this will be your kid’s first dog, or maybe even their first pet? In this case you’ll want to prepare them with a little bit of practice. Call up any friends who have doggies, and offer to look after their pooch for a day or so. When you’re pet sitting, allow your children to get to grips with all aspects of looking after the dog. They should practice the feeding, grooming, playing, and of course, walking. If you don’t have any ‘dog-parent’ friends, try the ‘Borrow My Dog’ application!

4. Training options

When you’re bringing a dog into your family home you’ll want to ensure that it’s well trained. You might want to hire a dog trainer, or you could train the dog yourself. To help you train your dog there are various dog training apps you might like to use including GoodPup, Dog Clicker and iTrainer Dog Whistle. All of these apps have a range of nifty features to support the training process.

5. Make the decision together

When you are choosing a new dog, it’s best to make the decision together as a family. Dogs all have different personalities, and you’ll want to choose an animal that is the right fit for your kids. Ensure that your kids get enough time to interact with the dogs. Most dog breeders will allow you to spend a good amount of time with each animal, particular charity centers like the Dogs Trust.

With these five simple tips, you’ll support your children to enjoy their time with their new pet.
