#BookReview: “Verity” by Colleen Hoover

I am determined to keep up with my local book club this year, and today I share my review for Verity by Colleen Hoover.

#BookReview Verity by Colleen Hoover

My Review of “Verity”

This was my first Colleen Hoover novel and I read it for my local book club. Yes, I enjoyed it! The book deals with the dark side of the human mind and the nature of obsession and love, but you never quite know what is “real” and what is not. It kept me hooked but I didn’t get too emotionally involved. Perhaps as a writer I managed to stay detached, knowing that the protagonists were also writers (apart from Jeremy, and I still can’t decide what to think about him). Still, it was an entertaining read, and it gave me something new to think about.

About the Book

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

10 Spring Plants and Flowers ‘Dangerous’ for Your Pets

Spring is the season to head outdoors, explore scenic parks and woodlands for pops of lavender and cherry blossoms. But could the great outdoors be harbouring plants and flowers potentially toxic for your pets?

With early blooms spotted around the country already, this led Chris Ashton at The Sun Vegas to detail 10 common spring plants and flowers that are potentially dangerous for your pets, whilst extracting the most asked questions around the toxicity of each in case your pet were to touch or ingest one of these plants.

Image of Marley the Staffy cross Pomeranian rescue dog and Nora the domestic short hair black cat lying a soft dog bed together. Text reads "Dog and Cat Mom @SpookyMrsGreen” with paw prints next to the text. Pet blogger UK. SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.

Chris Ashton at The Sun Vegas comments:

“As the spring season brings new growth and colour to your local area, pet owners should be aware of the potential danger of certain flowers and take the necessary steps to protect their furry friends. Protect your pet and stay informed about your local spring plants – research what to look out for including the best areas when walking your pet free from hazardous shrubs and flowers. And remember if you are somewhere potentially dangerous, always keep your pet on a lead, so there’s still enjoyment from the great outdoors.”

Here are the top 10 common spring plants that are toxic for your pets:

Daffodils – 2,840 Total Average Monthly UK Searches

Daffodils contain toxins that can be harmful to pets if ingested. The bulbs and flowers of daffodils contain lycorine and other alkaloids which can cause gastrointestinal distress, excessive salivation, vomiting, and even death if ingested in large quantities.

Tulips – 1,580 Total Average Monthly UK Searches

Tulips contain a toxic substance called tulipalin A and B, which can cause digestive issues such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain in pets if ingested. In extreme cases, tulip poisoning can even lead to death.

Ivy – 1,560 Total Average Monthly UK Searches

Ivy is dangerous to pets because it contains a toxic sap that can cause skin irritation, vomiting, and difficulty breathing in pets. It can also cause contact dermatitis, which is an allergic reaction to the sap. Additionally, the leaves of ivy can contain calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause an intense burning sensation and swelling if ingested.

Bluebells – 970 Total Average Monthly UK Searches

Bluebells are poisonous to pets because they contain a toxic alkaloid called lycorine. This toxic alkaloid can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive salivation, and even death in some cases if ingested. Pets may also experience difficulty breathing and weakness if they come in contact with the plant.

Yew – 780 Total Average Monthly UK Searches

Yew trees are potentially dangerous to pets because they contain a toxic ingredient called taxine. If ingested, this chemical can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, and even death in some cases. For this reason, it is important to keep pets away from yew trees, especially if they are small or more prone to chewing on plants.

Hyacinths – 510 Total Average Monthly UK Searches

Hyacinths are a type of bulb plant that contain a compound called lycorine. This compound is a toxin that can be harmful to pets if ingested. It can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive salivation, and even death if the pet ingests enough of it.

Calla Lily – 370 Total Average Monthly UK Searches

Calla lilies contain calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation and burning to a pet’s mouth, throat, and digestive tract if ingested. The irritation can lead to vomiting, drooling, difficulty swallowing, and even breathing difficulty.

Azaleas – 340 Total Average Monthly UK Searches

Azaleas contain a toxin called grayanotoxin, which can be deadly to pets if ingested. This toxin affects the nervous system, causing vomiting, diarrhoea, increased salivation, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, it can cause coma and death.

Snowdrops – 320 Total Average Monthly UK Searches

Snowdrops contain a type of alkaloid called galantamine, which is toxic to pets if ingested in large amounts. Some animals may experience vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, and other severe health issues if they eat large amounts of the plant.

Crocus – 220 Total Average Monthly UK Searches

Crocus plants contain a toxin called colchicine that is toxic to pets if ingested. Ingesting even small amounts of the toxin can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, lethargy, and even death in some pets.

Methodology:

  • The Sun Vegas sought to uncover the most common spring plants and flowers that can be toxic to pets.
  • To do this, an analysis was conducted, having referred to Country Living and Hello Magazine to form a seed list of the most common spring plants that are toxic to pets.
  • To rank which spring plant is most toxic, The Sun Vegas utilised Google search volume in the UK which is an average per month, discovering the most commonly asked questions associated with each plant and flower.
  • Research was collected February 2023 and accurate as of then, and therefore subject to change.

#BookReview: “The Ultimate Book on Vocal Sound Healing” by Githa Ben-David

Have you experienced sound healing therapy? I have and it was fantastic!

Today I share a book review for “The Ultimate Book on Vocal Sound Healing” by Githa Ben-David.

My Review for “The Ultimate Book on Vocal Sound Healing” by Githa Ben-David

Have you experienced sound healing therapy? Has a particular sound, song or piece of music given you a strange feeling deep inside your body? Then I recommend that you read this book! It is aimed at people who want to practice sound healing professionally, and it offers descriptions, exercises and best practice suggestions based on the author’s knowledge and experience.

I enjoyed reading about scientific research and sound healing, and the psychology behind this ancient tool that we are all capable of utilising, but here in the western world have been conditioned to ignore in favour of expensive drug-based medical treatments. Read this and be enlightened!

About the Book

The concept of “The Ultimate Book on Vocal Sound Healing” is The Note from Heaven – a condition of bliss, where time disappears and the voice seems to sing you, rather than you sing the voice. The experience of surrendering to The Note from Heaven is overwhelming and leads the singer into a state of Oneness, where present, past and future merge together and energetic patterns and traumas can be transformed, and profound healings happen. Book I: The Note from Heaven – How to sing yourself into contact with Oneness. Book II: Regressive Cell-Singing – How to sing yourself free of traumas and change emotional programming. Book III: Sound Healing – How to sound-scan a fellow being with your voice, plus a Q&A with members from the White Brotherhood.

Keeping Your Life On Track When Going Through A Family Breakup

Breakups are never easy, but they are at their most painful when kids are involved. You will inevitably feel some guilt and question virtually every decision you make. However, it’s important to remember that splitting up isn’t something you’ve taken lightly. Deep down, you know that this is the right path.

Accepting this is the first step to ensuring that the breakup and subsequent transition to the next part of your life remains smooth. Here are some follow up days that will support your cause further still.

Get Expert Advice

Many couples try to split amicably without legal battles. However, going through a divorce when children are involved is very complex. Moreover, you need to protect yourself as well as the kids, which is why speaking to a family lawyer is advised. Otherwise, you could potentially leave yourself open to even greater stress and heartache.

Completing the process through official channels provides stability for you and your children. It’s not only about the financial outcomes. More importantly, it provides confirmation about living arrangements and custody. For the sake of your children, as well as your own, leaving this to chance simple isn’t wise.

Try To Promote Stability In Other Life Areas

Going through a breakup or divorce will naturally disrupt your home life and family life. Therefore, it’s crucial that you try to maintain stability elsewhere. For example, keeping your kids in school and maintaining your work schedule will have a positive impact. If nothing else, it shows that some aspects of your life are unchanged and under control.

Similarly, you should try to keep up your gym habits and let the kids continue to see their friends. When they can see that this life change won’t turn every aspect of their world upside down, the transition is easier for them. And as you start the next chapter in your lives, several aspects will already be in place.

Create New Memories

This part of your life will inevitably involve a lot of tears and trauma. However, you can still enjoy happy moments with your kids too. Fun family activities are still available to broken families. In some cases, you may be able to do this with both parents to show a united front. Most of the time, though, it makes sense to do this separately from your ex.

If your ex continues to take the kids out too, it will highlight that they can still have lots of fun. The only difference for them is that the activities will be split across two parts of their family. Either way, using positive experiences as a counterweight for the negative moments will make this time in your life a lot less traumatic.

Allow Yourself Time To Adjust

After going through a breakup, it will take time to fully adjust. You may need to enter a new home while the family dynamic will look a little different too. Do not punish yourselves if you face teething problems. And while you want to keep a positive mindset where possible, it’s OK to mourn the relationship.

Finally, do not rush into a new relationship. And if you do find love, try to keep things moving at a suitable pace. Introducing kids to a new partner so quickly could be quite disruptive, especially if it subsequently doesn’t last. When you respect this, as well as the other features mentioned, you can come out the other side of this situation in a better place.

What To Do When Your Business Has Impostor Syndrome?

Anyone that has taken a new job in a highly professional environment will know of the term, or at least the concept, named “Impostor Syndrome.” It’s not hard to see why this develops – when people around you are so sharp, so experienced and so good at their jobs, you might feel like the odd one out. Of course, this feeling tends to be rather illusory, because you might just have the wrong impression of everyone around you, or have fallen into the habit of downplaying your strengths.

Individually, this feeling can be manageable, even if it is a known issue. But what happens when you feel as though your business has the same issue? What if you feel insecure in your place within the market, or even able to present a stable competitive approach towards rivalling those in your market? After all, everyone you’re competing with would love nothing more than to deal with one less competitor.

In this way, a total and holistic approach towards inspecting your business is required. Let’s consider some steps you can follow to achieve the best outcome:

Pexels – CC0 License

Be Honest With Yourself – It Leads To Stability

The first step is always to conduct an honest self-assessment. Odds are, if you feel your business isn’t compatible with its perceived peers, you may have identified an issue without knowing it. This involves evaluating the company’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as identifying areas where the company may be underestimating its capabilities – it’s okay if you’re a small business for instance, but you need to be careful about the size of projects you take on. Companies should also consider their unique value proposition and how they differentiate themselves from competitors in the market.

This self-assessment can help companies build confidence in their abilities and identify areas for improvement. In other words – make everything objective and known. Don’t rely on vague feelings. This improves confidence, even if you’re relatively small in your market.

Earn Your Position, It Might Take Time

Building trust and credibility in the market is essential for overcoming impostor syndrome, like it is when you take a job personally. Companies should focus on delivering high-quality products and services, establishing strong relationships with customers and partners with goodwill always in mind, and providing transparent and honest communication.

By consistently delivering on promises and building those connections, companies can establish a consistent reputation. This slowly helps them build a client list, and in the long run, that helps them justify their presence.

Ask For Feedback, It Does Help

Seeking feedback from customers, partners, and sometimes even consultants can also help companies overcome a feeling of insecurity in the market. By encouraging feedback and listening to constructive criticism, companies can identify areas for improvement and gain a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses too. This might be a simple survey after you perform a job, or encouraging honest reviews on your social media pages. You might even hire an essential consultant service or brand known to cultivate the best services, like the Beyond Law Group. It all counts.

Companies can also leverage positive feedback and testimonials to build confidence and credibility with future clients. Ultimately, there are no shortcuts to this. Sometimes, the impostor syndrome only goes when you know you’ve earned your stripes. So, don’t think of this feeling as a punishment or obstacle, but an opportunity.

With this advice, you’re sure to avoid business impostor syndrome.

#BookReview: Q (Hardcover Edition) by Christina Dalcher

Today I share a review for a book I read for my local book club. Read on to see what I thought of Q by Christina Dalcher.

#BookReview Q by Christina Dalcher reviewed by Catherine Green at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
#BookReview Q by Christina Dalcher

My Review

I did not like this book, and yet I really enjoyed reading it. It is horrible because I can see the story beginning to unfold in real time, although I hope it never reaches that point. My daughters are similar ages to the children in the novel, and my emotions were well and truly tested. The subject and history of eugenics does interest me, and I have read a bit about it in the past, so I was interested to see where the story took me. This was a book club read and I do recommend it.

About the Book

Elena Fairchild is a teacher at one of the state’s new elite schools. Her daughters are exactly like her: beautiful, ambitious, and perfect. A good thing, since the recent mandate that’s swept the country is all about perfection.

Now everyone must undergo routine tests for their quotient, Q, and any children who don’t measure up are placed into new government schools. Instead, teachers can focus on the gifted.

Elena tells herself it’s not about eugenics, not really, but when one of her daughters scores lower than expected and is taken away, she intentionally fails her own test to go with her.

But what Elena discovers is far more terrifying than she ever imagined…

#BookReview: “Align: Living and Loving from the True Self” by Harmony Kwiker

My year has begun with a collection of self-help and inspirational books to review. Check out today’s book review for Align: Living and Loving from the True Self by Harmony Kwiker.

Book Review for Align: Living and Loving from the True Self by SpookyMrsGreen.com pagan lifestyle blog.
Book Review for Align: Living and Loving from the True Self

My Review

This book looks like a heavy read, but I got through it quite easily. It is written in a conversational tone that I found easy to follow, and the author imparts personal experiences to help describe the psychological profiles in the book. I enjoyed reading the book for its comparison between scientific and psychological factors of the human condition, and their connection to the spiritual and “other” world that we sometimes struggle to accept. There was some interesting information relating to childhood trauma that resonated with me, and I do feel that this book has enriched me and given me something to work with during my selfcare practice.

About the Book

‘She is the compassionate therapist and gifted spiritual teacher that we need to guide us on our journey through life. This book is a gift.’ Dr. Arielle Schwartz, author of The Post-Traumatic Growth Guidebook and The Complex PTSD Workbook.

There is a fundamental core within each of us where our true nature resides. Our learned patterns of relating to ourselves and the world cause us to get pulled off our center, coming out of alignment with our True Self. While these conditioned patterns were at one time useful, continuing to live from them prevents us from experiencing the ease and beauty of our own true nature. In this remarkable exploration of the human condition, Harmony Kwiker provides a clear and comprehensive map to rediscovering how to live and love from the True Self, including how to come back to wholeness by accessing your subtle energy body, how to embody your alignment in all of your relationships and how to explore sexual intimacy in a sacred way.
