If you’re a fan of twisty thrillers with a Gothic edge, The House of Hidden Secrets by C.E. Rose might just find its way onto your bookshelf.
I picked up this novel from a local author and was especially intrigued because the story is set in Cheshire, England – close to my own home. There’s always something special about recognising local landscapes woven into fiction.
My Thoughts on The House of Hidden Secrets
This book was an enjoyable read, although I did find myself struggling to fully connect with the main character, Serena. She is portrayed as a loving mother who, we discover, was once a strong, independent woman until life pulled her into the trap of an abusive relationship. When the story begins, Serena has escaped her abuser and is determined to rebuild her life, protect her young daughter, and stay hidden from the authorities.
Enter Ramsay Hall – a sprawling country estate where Serena takes up the position of housekeeper for widower Hayden Ramsay and his two adult sons. On the surface, it sounds like the beginning of a romantic fairy tale, but of course, this is a Gothic thriller, so appearances are deceiving.
While the plot itself is steady and, at times, predictable, there are moments that really shine. My favourite character is Hugh Ramsey, the misunderstood and volatile younger son. His complicated relationship with a childhood friend was particularly well written and left me with a lingering sadness long after I finished the book.
Overall, I’d describe this as a good holiday read – atmospheric, intriguing in parts, and perfect for readers who enjoy slow-burn family mysteries set in grand old houses.
About the Book
The imposing gates of Ramsay Hall yawned open. As Serena and 4-year-old Lana walked up the long driveway, little did they know the dark secrets that lay within.
When Serena Green accepted the role of housekeeper for wealthy widower Hayden Ramsay, she never imagined her new home would be Ramsay Hall, an ancient, sprawling mansion in Northern England.
Serena quickly becomes an integral part of the household, making friends with Hayden’s younger son Hugh, despite Jack, his older brother’s, coldness towards her and Lana.
But the hall’s beautiful exterior hides many ugly secrets. Though Serena and Jack begin to grow closer, she’s confused by his behaviour around Lana. What is he guilty of? And is there more to their mother’s death than the Ramsay men will admit, even to themselves?
As the harrowing past of Ramsay Hall unravels, Serena’s fresh start becomes a fresh horror. She fears for her and Lana’s safety, but what are the bleak secrets in Serena’s own past?
This house is built on a lifetime of lies… and the truth might just bring the walls crashing down.
A twisty, gripping and utterly unputdownable new thriller that fans of Lisa Jewell, C.L. Taylor and Mark Edwards will love.

Final Thoughts
While The House of Hidden Secrets isn’t the most unpredictable thriller I’ve read, it does have charm. The setting in Northern England gives it a moody, atmospheric quality, and readers who love old houses brimming with family secrets will find plenty to enjoy.
If you’re looking for a Gothic-style mystery with a domestic drama twist, this could be the next book to add to your summer holiday reading list.
