Mummy Monday: Caring for Your Family Garden This Autumn

As autumn settles in with its cooler days and golden leaves, it’s the perfect time to focus on preparing our gardens for the colder months ahead. Whether you have a sprawling garden or a small backyard space, autumn garden care can be a family affair, and it’s a great way to keep kids connected to nature, even as winter approaches.

Here are some simple, family-friendly tasks to get your garden ready for the changing season – and keep it beautiful all year round!

Caring for Your Family Garden This Autumn

1. Rake Up Leaves Together

Kids often love playing in piles of leaves, and it can be a productive part of garden care! Raking leaves helps keep the lawn healthy by allowing more sunlight to reach the grass. Plus, fallen leaves make an excellent base for compost. Create a leaf pile with the kids and add it to your compost bin to break down and nourish your garden beds.

2. Plant Bulbs for Spring

Autumn is the ideal time to plant bulbs that will bloom in spring. Choose flowers like tulips, daffodils, and crocuses, which can brighten up your garden after winter. This is an exciting activity for children—they’ll love seeing the flowers pop up as the weather warms! Have them help dig holes and gently place the bulbs, giving them a sense of responsibility and excitement for the future blooms.

3. Tidy Up Garden Beds

As a family, you can pull out any remaining summer plants that are past their prime. Show kids how to gently prune back shrubs and perennials and remove dead flowers or leaves. This helps keep pests and diseases at bay while giving the garden a fresh start for winter.

4. Set Up a Bird Feeder

Autumn is a great time to set up bird feeders or bird baths for the colder months, helping local wildlife through the winter. It’s also a fun way to introduce children to bird-watching and nature care, especially when it gets chilly outside. You can even make homemade bird feeders with pine cones, peanut butter, and birdseed—a fantastic hands-on project for kids!

5. Find Inspiration for Garden Projects

If you’re like me and always looking for fresh ideas to make your garden a family haven, you’ll love Garden Answers, a vibrant gardening magazine packed with expert advice, seasonal tips, and design inspiration. This autumn, they’re offering a fantastic deal—6 issues of Garden Answers for just £19.99! It’s a great way to get new ideas for garden layouts, plant combinations, and creative touches that keep your outdoor space beautiful all year round.

👉 Click here to grab this exclusive offer and make your autumn garden project even more exciting for the whole family!

6. Mulch the Garden Beds

Finally, add a layer of mulch to protect plants’ roots from the cold. Mulching helps conserve moisture and keeps the soil temperature steady, which is great for those tender perennials and bulbs you’ve planted. Kids can help spread mulch, and you can explain the benefits of protecting plants in winter.

Embrace the Seasonal Change as a Family

With these easy steps, caring for your garden this autumn can become a fun, bonding activity for your family. Spending time together outdoors is a great way to appreciate the beauty of each season. So, grab a pair of gloves, let the kids play in the leaves, and enjoy nurturing your family garden together!

My Family Holiday in Review: A Fabulous Stay in Spain

Hi folks! It has been a tough working week since we returned from our family holiday in Spain at half-term, and I really wish that I could go back and do it all again.

We enjoyed an all-inclusive package holiday at a family hotel resort in Benidorm with my in-laws (thanks to the bank of Mum and Dad for helping cash-strapped Millennials), we sampled the crazy nightlife (Star Wars will never be the same again!), and we relaxed on the beach.

Read my blog post for a detailed account of our first family holiday abroad in Benidorm, Spain.

My Family Holiday in Review: A Fabulous Stay in Spain

This was our first family holiday abroad, and it was extra special that our daughters had the opportunity to fly in a brand-new Jet2 plane. We visited the flight deck when we arrived at Alicante airport, and the pilots told us that the plane was only two weeks’ old, and they were having fun flying it. They encouraged our younger daughter to pursue her interest in planes and consider training to be a pilot, they showed her the control panel on the plane, and they were very friendly and supportive.

It was such a wonderful experience to see the joy on my daughter’s face when she approached the plane at Manchester Airport. She has waited all her life to fly, and we have spent many Sunday afternoons watching planes landing and taking off from a viewing spot in a Cheshire park near the airport. So, this day was a long time coming. And it was exciting for me, having not flown for fifteen years. I realised that I do enjoy travelling, and despite my worries about getting through airport security with my eye medication, the whole process was smooth and efficient.

Magic Rock Gardens

We stayed in an African themed hotel called Magic Rock Gardens, a huge twelve storey complex with pool facilities and easy access to the beach. Although the hotel sits on a hill, the walk to the beach is literally five minutes, and we could see the sea from our hotel room. It was a great location for convenience, having a pharmacy and grocery shop just across the road, McDonald’s and Burger King round the corner, and lots of seafront bars, cafes and entertainment venues.

The hotel was clean, spacious and welcoming, and it ran a smooth operation. While we did queue to get into the main restaurant most evenings, it was never for longer than ten minutes and we didn’t feel rushed when we ate. There was a good selection of food available, although I will say that it caters more for general meat eaters. Being vegetarian, I struggled a little bit, but there was a separate section for cooked vegetables and dishes that I was able to eat from. I did enjoy wine on tap with my meals!

Cool Pool Area

The hotel pool is in the shade for most of the day and is not heated, so we did find the water temperature hard to handle. However, I went in the pool on a warm day and had some fun with my daughters, so they were happy. I preferred to spend my time reading a book on the sun loungers next to the pool, sipping Tia Maria and Coke from the all-inclusive hotel bar. Ah, bliss!

We enjoyed lots of time on the beach and paddled in the sea, which was just the right temperature for me. Being a natural redhead, I don’t manage well during summer heat, which is why we booked our holiday for October. This was a much better climate for me, and I even indulged in a little sunbathing, although I was slathered in Factor 50 sun cream every day! My husband and I even found time alone to sit on a beach and reconnect with each other, which went a long way towards healing our marriage.

Exploring Old Benidorm

We had a nice time exploring Old Benidorm, wandering around the streets and browsing in the shops. My elder daughter finally found some clothes that she liked, having not been impressed with anything I showed her back home in the UK. She came home with a whole new wardrobe! We marvelled at the extensive views across the coastline, we saw the ruins of an old castle that were uncovered in 2019, we took in all the quirky buildings and ornate architecture, and we had lots of laughs together.

I want to Retire to Spain

I now understand why so many people from the UK decide to retire to Spain, and I even suggested it to my husband, which is something that has never crossed my mind before. We have agreed that we will return when we can save up the money for another holiday. It is important for our family’s emotional wellbeing, and now I am determined to plan so that we have adventures to look forward to when normal life becomes overwhelming.

Did you enjoy some time away from home during the school holiday? Share your adventures in the comments.

Witchy Wednesday: The Origins of Tarot Cards and Their Influence on Popular Culture

Welcome to another Witchy Wednesday, where we dive into the mystical and magical! Today, we’re exploring the origins of Tarot cards and their fascinating journey through history into popular culture.

The Tarot’s mysterious origins date back to the mid-15th century in Europe, where they were initially used as playing cards. It wasn’t until the late 18th century that Tarot began to evolve into a tool for divination and spiritual guidance. Over time, the Tarot became a vital part of many spiritual practices, helping seekers connect with their inner wisdom and the world around them.

Explore the origins of Tarot Cards and their Influence on popular culture at SpookyMrsGreen.com.

The Origins of Tarot Cards and Their Influence on Popular Culture

One of the most iconic Tarot decks is the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, which was first published in 1909. The creation of this deck was a collaboration between the occultist A.E. Waite and the talented illustrator Pamela Colman Smith. However, for years, only Waite and the publisher, Rider, were credited for the deck’s success. Pamela Colman Smith’s contributions were overlooked, and her name wasn’t added to the title until much later. She herself called it “a big task for a very small payment.”

Today, the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck remains one of the most popular and enduring decks used by Tarot readers worldwide. Its images are steeped in symbolism, making it a perfect deck for both beginners and experienced readers alike. If you want to celebrate Pamela Colman Smith’s magical work, why not check out this Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot T-shirt? It’s a great way to pay tribute to her incredible legacy, and right now, you can even get FREE socks with your purchase! Just use code: SOCKS at checkout.

Tarot in Popular Culture

Tarot has deeply influenced popular culture, appearing in movies, television shows, literature, and art. From the mysterious fortune-teller in Hollywood films to the deeply symbolic use of Tarot in shows like The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Penny Dreadful, Tarot’s appeal is timeless. The images on Tarot cards invite us to reflect on our own lives, and they offer endless inspiration for creatives of all kinds.

Want to learn more about the life of Pamela Colman Smith? Check out my book review of “The Queen of Wands: The Story of Pamela Colman Smith, the Artist Behind the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck” by Cat Willett. It’s a fascinating deep dive into her life and the legacy she left behind.

And if you’re feeling inspired, why not grab your own deck? The Original Rider Waite Tarot Deck is still available and remains a powerful tool for anyone on their spiritual journey.

Until next time, blessed be!

Starting a Movie Night Tradition

A movie night tradition is simply a commitment to gather and watch a film with your family once a week. It’s about creating a space where everyone can sit back, relax, and enjoy a shared experience.

More than just watching a movie, it’s a weekly ritual that can foster a sense of togetherness and encourage family bonding. By setting aside a specific night, you’re giving everyone something to look forward to—an opportunity to unwind together.

Why You Need a Movie Night Tradition

Having a movie night tradition can be one of the most enjoyable ways to connect with your family. Watching a movie together allows everyone to share in the same story, laugh at the same moments, and even shed a tear or two. Unlike endless TV shows or scripted reality series, a weekly movie is a special choice that helps your family avoid mindless entertainment. It offers a chance to escape into a story while leaving behind the buzz of daily life.

Over time, your family will look forward to it, and it can become a staple activity that builds memories. Whether you’re watching a thrilling action film, a classic comedy, or a family favourite, there’s always something to talk about when the credits roll.

How to Pick Your Movies

Choosing the right movie for your family night might seem like a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. There are a few ways to make this easier:

  • Look at Recommendations: Magazines like Empire often list timeless classics and must-watch films, providing great options for all ages. Checking out specialist magazines is a good way to find movies you might not consider otherwise, from old favourites to underrated gems.
  • Stay Up-to-Date on Releases: Many families enjoy watching recent releases. To do this, stay in tune with the latest films on streaming services such as Prime, Netflix, and Disney+.
  • Make it a Group Decision: Let everyone vote on movie suggestions to give everyone a say. By allowing family members to pitch ideas and participate in the selection process, you’re making the tradition inclusive and fair. And don’t be surprised if younger family members introduce you to films you wouldn’t normally consider!

Keeping the Movie Night Routine Alive While Travelling?

Life doesn’t always stick to the plan, and family trips or holidays can sometimes interrupt movie night. But should it? It’s up to you. Some families choose to adapt the tradition while travelling, while others take a break and resume when they’re back home.

If you decide to keep it going, a bit of preparation can help. Check if you have access to your favourite streaming platforms at your destination. Often, you may find your IP address is blocked, especially if you’ve signed up to streaming platforms in the UK and are travelling abroad. The good news is that you can learn how to reset IP address on iPhone with a VPN system. In other words, you can be abroad and still appear to be in the UK.

Starting a movie night tradition can feel like a small decision, but it brings everyone together in ways that few other routines can. From laughing at the same scenes to debating the plot twists, your family will bond over shared experiences and grow closer with each movie. Whether you choose to watch classics, new releases, or family picks, the value of spending time together each week is something that everyone will cherish.

Mummy Monday: Budget-Friendly Christmas Tips

As we approach the festive season, many families will be mindful of their spending due to the ongoing cost of living crisis in the UK. It’s possible to celebrate Christmas without stretching your finances.

Here are some tips to help you plan a budget-friendly holiday without missing out on the festivities.

Explore Budget Friendly Christmas Tips at SpookyMrsGreen.com.

Budget-Friendly Christmas Tips

1. Set a Budget and Stick to It

Before you start shopping, determine how much you can realistically spend on gifts, decorations, food, and other holiday expenses. This will help you avoid overspending and keep your finances in check.

2. Get Creative with Gifts

You don’t need to splurge on expensive gifts to show your loved ones you care. Consider giving homemade gifts, like baked treats or crafted items. Personalised gifts, such as a framed photo of a special moment, can also be thoughtful yet inexpensive.

3. Shop Smart

Take advantage of cashback opportunities while you shop. By joining Quidco, you can earn hundreds of pounds in cashback every year from over 4,500 retailers. This can significantly offset your holiday shopping costs. Join Quidco and start saving today!

4. Plan Your Meals Wisely

Food costs can add up quickly. Make a meal plan for Christmas Day and other holiday gatherings to avoid unnecessary purchases. Resist the urge to buy “just in case” snacks that often go uneaten. Instead, focus on a few delicious dishes that everyone will enjoy.

5. Host a Potluck

If you’re hosting family and friends, consider a potluck-style meal where each guest brings a dish. This not only shares the costs but also creates a diverse spread of food and can lead to a more enjoyable gathering.

6. DIY Decorations

Decorating doesn’t have to be expensive. Use decorations you already have or make your own with materials around the house. Get the kids involved by crafting ornaments or making homemade gift wrap. This adds a personal touch to your decor and gifts.

7. Consider a Secret Santa

Organising a Secret Santa can simplify gift-giving among family or friends. Set a reasonable price limit so everyone can participate without feeling pressured to overspend.

8. Be Smart with Loyalty Points and Discounts

Use any loyalty points you’ve accrued throughout the year to reduce your Christmas spending. Additionally, keep an eye out for online vouchers and discounts that can help you save on your purchases.

9. Start Early

If you can, begin your shopping early to take advantage of sales and avoid the last-minute rush. Make a list of what you need to keep track of your purchases and avoid duplicate gifts.

10. Focus on Experiences

Sometimes, the best gifts are experiences rather than physical items. Consider planning a family outing, a movie night, or a day of fun activities together instead of material gifts.

Christmas is for Making Happy Memories

By implementing these tips, you can enjoy a festive holiday season without the financial stress. Remember, Christmas is about spending time with loved ones and making memories, not about the price tags on gifts. Happy holidays!

Feel free to share your own budget-friendly tips in the comments, and let’s support each other in making this Christmas special!

Tips And Tricks To Boost Yourself Mentally And Physically

In today’s fast-paced world, maintaining both mental and physical well-being is crucial for leading a fulfilling and balanced life. Simple adjustments to daily routines can make a profound difference, helping you build resilience, increase energy, and boost overall happiness.

Here are some practical tips and tricks to elevate your mental and physical health.

1. Prioritise Quality Sleep

Sleep is fundamental to physical and mental health, as it allows the body to repair itself and the brain to process emotions. Aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. Creating a pre-sleep routine, such as dimming lights, avoiding screens, and engaging in relaxing activities, can signal to your body that it’s time to rest. Good sleep not only improves your mood but also enhances cognitive functions like memory and concentration.

2. Incorporate Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, are known to reduce stress and increase awareness of the present moment. Studies show that just 10 minutes of daily meditation can lower anxiety levels, increase focus, and promote a sense of calm. There are many free apps and online resources available to guide you through simple meditation exercises. Breathing exercises, in particular, are effective for grounding yourself in stressful situations and can be done anytime, anywhere.

3. Stay Physically Active

Regular exercise is one of the best ways to boost both mental and physical health. Physical activity releases endorphins, which are known to improve mood and reduce pain perception. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, like walking, cycling, or swimming, five times a week. Strength training and flexibility exercises, such as yoga, can also improve body function and lower stress levels. Find an activity you enjoy to keep you motivated and consistent in your routine.

4. Nourish Your Body with Balanced Nutrition

The food you consume has a direct impact on how you feel physically and mentally. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins provides the essential nutrients your body and brain need to function optimally. Reducing processed foods and sugar can improve energy levels and mood. Hydration is equally important, as even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue and irritability.

5. Consider Medical Cannabinoids

In recent years, medical cannabinoids have gained attention for their potential mental and physical health benefits. These compounds, derived from the cannabis plant, are sometimes used under medical supervision to alleviate chronic pain, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep. If considering this route, consult a healthcare provider to determine whether it may be suitable for you, as cannabinoids may interact with other medications or have side effects.

6. Practise Gratitude

Finally, practising gratitude can significantly improve mental health by shifting focus away from what is lacking. Take a few moments each day to acknowledge things you’re grateful for. This could be as simple as a warm cup of coffee, a compliment from a friend, or a moment of quiet. Keeping a gratitude journal can help reinforce positive thinking over time.

In Closing

Incorporating these practices into your daily life can help boost your mental and physical health. Remember, small, consistent changes often lead to the most sustainable improvements. Choose what resonates with you and gradually build a lifestyle that fosters well-being, resilience, and happiness.

Witchy Wednesday: Why Witches Love Halloween

Ah, Halloween! The most magical time of the year, when the veil between the worlds thins, and witches like me come alive (not literally, I promise)! 🎃✨

There’s something extra special about Halloween that sets a witch’s heart aflutter. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or simply witchy-curious, let me share a few reasons why we absolutely adore this spooky, sparkly holiday.

Happy Halloween spooky black cat sitting on a gravestone with the full moon behind.
Happy Halloween from SpookyMrsGreen!

Why Witches Love Halloween

First of all, it’s the atmosphere! Crisp autumn air, the crunch of leaves beneath our boots, and the glow of jack-o’-lanterns lighting up dark streets. There’s something enchanting about the fading sunlight and long shadows as they play tricks on the imagination. It feels like the earth is slowing down, asking us to pause, breathe, and connect with nature. And what better way to do that than by brewing a little mischief in the cauldron—or, let’s be real, sipping pumpkin spice lattes while pretending we’ve brewed them ourselves! ☕🧙‍♀️

Then, of course, there’s the magic. Witches love Halloween because it’s when our powers feel the most potent. The veil between the living and the spirit world is thinner, making it easier to commune with ancestors, spirits, and even cheeky familiars (hello, black cats 🐾). Whether we’re casting spells for protection, abundance, or simply a little self-love, Halloween offers the perfect energy to amplify our intentions.

We Love to Dress Up

And don’t forget the dressing up! Witches and Halloween go together like bat wings and broomsticks. It’s the one night of the year where everyone embraces their inner witch. Whether you’re donning a fabulous witch hat, dressing as your favourite supernatural being, or rocking a gothic glam look, Halloween lets us celebrate our uniqueness and the magic within. It’s an invitation to be bold, mysterious, and unapologetically ourselves—complete with glittery potions and a splash of sass. 💫🕸️

Most importantly, Halloween reminds us of our connection to the cycles of life, death, and rebirth. As we say goodbye to the harvest and prepare for the dark, introspective winter months, witches embrace this transition as a time for reflection and renewal. It’s a powerful time to set new intentions, let go of what no longer serves us, and prepare for a fresh start.

Let Your Inner Witch Shine

So, whether you’re gathering around the fire with your coven, lighting candles for your ancestors, or simply indulging in some spooky stories and candy corn, know that Halloween is the perfect time to let your inner witch shine. Witches love Halloween because it’s not just a celebration of the supernatural—it’s a celebration of ourselves and the magic we carry every day. 🖤🔮

Happy Halloween, my spooky friends! Let’s make this one bewitching. 🧙‍♀️✨

October is ADHD Awareness Month, and as a mum, it’s an important time to highlight something that many parents, especially mums of girls, might relate to.

For decades, ADHD has been seen as something that primarily affects boys. But did you know that many girls are being misdiagnosed, or worse, completely overlooked?

Raising ADHD Awareness for Our Girls

ADHD symptoms in girls often present differently than in boys. While boys might show hyperactivity and impulsiveness, girls tend to internalize their struggles, which can be mistaken for shyness or anxiety. This gender bias in medical research has meant that girls have had to fight much harder for their ADHD diagnosis, often facing years of frustration, confusion, and feeling like they don’t quite fit in. As parents, we need to be aware of this so that we can support our daughters and help them navigate these challenges.

ADHD Awareness is Increasing

The good news is that awareness is increasing, and it’s becoming easier to find the right support and resources for girls with ADHD. This ADHD Awareness Month, I’m excited to share that my affiliate partner, The Spark Company, has launched a fabulous collection to raise awareness and empower those with ADHD. Their NEW ADHD Awareness Collection features fun and cheeky designs that embrace the uniqueness of living with ADHD and encourage us to celebrate it!

Here are some of my favourites from the collection:

Continue the Conversation around ADHD

As mums, let’s continue the conversation around ADHD and push for better recognition and support, especially for our girls. Every bit of awareness helps break down those barriers and creates a more inclusive world for all children.

So, whether you’re raising a neurodiverse child, or just want to support the cause, check out the collection and wear your ADHD pride with style!

Happy Mummy Monday, and here’s to raising awareness and sparking change. 💜
