Mummy Monday: Living with Rare Eye Disease and Chronic Pain

September is Pain Awareness Month, and today I want to share something a little more personal. Many of you know me as SpookyMrsGreen, the Pagan housewife, author, and blogger who writes about family life, ghost hunts, and Gothic adventures. But behind the scenes, I live with a rare eye disease that causes chronic pain every single day.

My Journey with Ocular Surface Disease

I recently participated in a clinical study exploring the patient experience of Ocular Surface Disease (OSD). The finished article has now been published, and I am one of the subjects referenced. You can read it here: Clinical Study on OSD.

My diagnoses include:

  • Dry Eye Disease (DED)
  • Neuropathic Corneal Pain (NCP)
  • And several related conditions not listed in the study.

On paper, “dry eyes” might sound minor, but the reality is far from it. These conditions cause constant burning, stinging, and nerve pain that can be completely debilitating. Imagine trying to work, look after your children, or even enjoy a family day out when your eyes feel like they are on fire.

Why This Matters

It is very hard to explain to the wider world that I live with a debilitating health condition. I often feel that because my illness is invisible, it is easily dismissed. People don’t always see the pain, the exhaustion, or the impact on my daily life.

This article goes some way towards validating my experience. To see my words, and those of others living with OSD, included in medical research feels important. It shows that our voices matter, and that the medical community is beginning to listen to patients like me.

Finding Strength as a Mum

As a mother, I push through the pain because I want my children to have a happy, full life. They know that some days I have to slow down, rest, or cancel plans when my eyes are too painful. And yet, through honesty and openness, I believe I am teaching them resilience, empathy, and the importance of looking after our health.

Pain Awareness Month reminds us that millions of people live with chronic pain conditions. Whether visible or invisible, their struggles are real. If you know someone who is dealing with pain, a little kindness and patience goes a long way.

Final Thoughts

I don’t usually write about my health in such detail, but it feels important to mark Pain Awareness Month with honesty. Living with chronic eye pain is part of my journey, and while it doesn’t define me, it does shape my daily life.

If you would like to understand more, you can read the published clinical study here: Clinical Study on OSD.

Free for all Friday | Dark London by Dr Drew Gray – Book Review

This week for Free-for-all Friday, I’m sharing my book review of Dark London by Dr Drew Gray – and what a deliciously Gothic treat it is! 🖤

I was kindly sent this beautiful hardback by the publisher, and from the moment it arrived, I was smitten. The cover design alone is an aesthetic delight, and it now sits proudly on my Gothic black bookshelf, nestled between Tarot cards and crystal skulls. This is one of those books that looks as good as it reads – a real showpiece for any spooky book collection.

Book cover for Dark London by Dr Drew Gray reviewed by paranormal author Catherine Green at SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog.
Dark London by Dr Drew Gray – Book Review

A Journey into London’s Shadowy Past

Dr Drew Gray is a social historian who specialises in the history of crime and punishment, and in Dark London he takes us deep into the city’s murky past. From crimes of passion to tales of grave robbing, gruesome murders, dens of iniquity, Victorian séances and haunted houses – London’s dark heart is revealed in over 100 chilling cases.

Some of the stories were familiar to me – you cannot love Gothic history and not stumble upon the Whitechapel horrors at some point – but there were plenty of new ones to discover. I particularly enjoyed the case of the London Burkers, whose ringleader confessed to stealing and selling nearly 1,000 bodies to eager 1830s anatomists. Grim, yet fascinating!

A Feast for the Eyes

What really makes this book stand out are the images scattered throughout. Victorian archive photographs, original prints, posters and paintings all bring the macabre history of London to life. It feels like stepping back in time, walking the gaslit streets, brushing shoulders with both the infamous and the forgotten.

Why You Should Read Dark London

If you enjoy exploring the occult, Gothic and criminal underbelly of history, this book is a must-read. It is packed with scandal, superstition and the kind of morbid tales that make you want to keep the lights on at night. Perfect for lovers of Gothic nonfiction, London history enthusiasts, and anyone who likes their bedtime reading with a side of the sinister.

Dr Drew Gray has curated a dark yet enthralling exploration of London’s hidden stories, and I thoroughly recommend adding this book to your collection.

✨ Have you read Dark London yet, or do you have another favourite Gothic history book? Let me know in the comments – I’m always looking for more spooky reads!

Witchy Wednesday | Do My Haunted Dolls Dislike Me?

As the summer holidays drew to a close, my daughter and I found ourselves shopping for back-to-school supplies. Among the pens, notebooks, and highlighters, we stumbled upon something far more exciting – another haunted doll to add to our ever-growing collection. She is a beautiful porcelain doll, still nestled in her own gift box, but with our shelves already crowded with spirited companions, she currently has no space to stand.

And so, she waits.

But here’s the curious part…

Spooky image of a porcelain doll haunted doll spooky doll. Text reads “Witchy Wednesday Do My Haunted Dolls Dislike Me?” UK pagan family pagan mom at SpookyMrsGreen.com spooky family lifestyle blog.
Witchy Wednesday | Do My Haunted Dolls Dislike Me? 🪆✨

Do My Haunted Dolls Dislike Me?

Recently, we’ve been attempting to communicate with our dolls, hoping to uncover more of their personalities and perhaps the spirits that linger with them. My daughter and her friend even held a spontaneous séance one evening – and, to my surprise, they had some success. The dolls seemed to stir, their energy shifting, subtle responses flickering through the room.

Yet, when I joined in, everything went mysteriously quiet.

Was it coincidence? Or something more?

My energy is too strong

I can’t help but wonder if my energy is too strong, or too different. Do I scare the dolls, or perhaps the spirits attached to them? Or do they simply prefer the youthful, open energy of teenagers over that of a middle-aged mother?

It’s a strange feeling, being the one left out of the conversation with your own haunted dolls! But that’s the thrill of paranormal exploration – nothing is predictable, and every experiment brings more questions than answers.

For now, our porcelain newcomer rests in her box, patiently waiting for the right moment to introduce herself. And perhaps, just perhaps, she will be the one to break the silence with me.

Witchy Tip: If you work with haunted objects, don’t be disheartened if they don’t respond straight away. Spirits are like people – they have preferences, moods, and boundaries. Sometimes, the right person at the right moment is needed to make a connection.

What do you think?

What do you think – do my dolls dislike me, or are they just waiting for the right time?

🔮 Share your thoughts in the comments – I’d love to hear your haunted object stories!

Mummy Monday | Back to School with a Warm Heart 💜

It’s 1st September already, and that can only mean one thing in the UK: it’s time to go back to school! My daughters are both a mix of happy and sad about it. They’ve had such a fun-filled summer holiday, and honestly, I’m feeling a little emotional myself as we get back into routine.

We’ve packed so many special memories into the past few weeks that it’s hard to know where to begin…

Mummy Monday | Back to School with a Warm Heart 💜 Warmies Keyring Product Review

Our Summer of Love and Adventure

This summer was one to remember. The highlight? A dream holiday to Skiathos, Greece, where we attended the beautiful seaside wedding of our close friends. It was our second family trip abroad and a truly magical experience that we will treasure forever.

The girls also spent a fun-packed week visiting their aunt, uncle, and young cousins. They had the best time exploring old castles and historic churches, running wild in soft play centres and outdoor adventure parks, and making the most of their childhood freedom. Back home, we enjoyed cosy movie nights, raucous board game battles, spontaneous shopping trips, and quiet, creative afternoons working on our family scrapbooks.

Yes, I’m a little exhausted. But in the best possible way! 😉

Why Summer Holidays Are Exhausting (And Magical) for Mums Like Me

Back to School – With a Little Help from Warmies

Now we’re preparing for the back to school routine here in the UK: early mornings, packed lunches, homework schedules, and all the big emotions that go with returning to the classroom.

My younger daughter, who just celebrated her 12th birthday, is starting her new school year with something extra special: a Warmies Sloth keyring that we were kindly sent to review. And let me tell you, this little cutie is a game changer.

As some of you may know, she lives with anxiety and struggles to settle at night. The first night she took her new sloth to bed, she reported back with a big smile and said that the soothing lavender scent and soft plush material really helped her drift off calmly. She now hangs the sloth on a pin board above her bed as a sleep aid and comforter.

But that’s not all! She also attaches it to her handbag during the day, and is super excited to take it to school this week and show her friends. It has already become a comforting companion through busy days and quiet nights.

If your child experiences anxiety, has sensory needs, or is neurodiverse, I highly recommend trying a Warmies keyring. They’re tactile, soothing, lightweight, and make the perfect portable comforter for school bags, car journeys, sleepovers – anywhere, really!

👉 Check out the Warmies Sloth Keyring here – it could make all the difference for your child this school year! Plus, get £5 off £20 spend with code: SUMMER5. Click here.

Easing Back into the School Routine – the Witchy Way

As we return to routine, I’m making space for a gentler rhythm. I’ve pulled out my planner, stocked up on herbal tea, and set the intention to embrace the change of season with grace. September always carries a back-to-school energy for adults too – a shift into focus, fresh goals, and new beginnings. I’m holding onto that warm summer joy and bringing it into the autumn months ahead.

So here’s to a smooth transition, a heartfelt goodbye to summer, and a hopeful welcome to the term ahead. We’ve got this, mums!

Have you tried Warmies products before? How are your little ones feeling about the new school year? Let me know in the comments or tag me on socials – I’d love to hear your stories!

Book Review: The House of Hidden Secrets by C.E. Rose

If you’re a fan of twisty thrillers with a Gothic edge, The House of Hidden Secrets by C.E. Rose might just find its way onto your bookshelf.

I picked up this novel from a local author and was especially intrigued because the story is set in Cheshire, England – close to my own home. There’s always something special about recognising local landscapes woven into fiction.

Book cover for The House of Hidden Secrets by C.E. Rose reviewed by paranormal author Catherine Green at SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog.
Book Review: The House of Hidden Secrets by C.E. Rose 🏰 📖

My Thoughts on The House of Hidden Secrets

This book was an enjoyable read, although I did find myself struggling to fully connect with the main character, Serena. She is portrayed as a loving mother who, we discover, was once a strong, independent woman until life pulled her into the trap of an abusive relationship. When the story begins, Serena has escaped her abuser and is determined to rebuild her life, protect her young daughter, and stay hidden from the authorities.

Enter Ramsay Hall – a sprawling country estate where Serena takes up the position of housekeeper for widower Hayden Ramsay and his two adult sons. On the surface, it sounds like the beginning of a romantic fairy tale, but of course, this is a Gothic thriller, so appearances are deceiving.

While the plot itself is steady and, at times, predictable, there are moments that really shine. My favourite character is Hugh Ramsey, the misunderstood and volatile younger son. His complicated relationship with a childhood friend was particularly well written and left me with a lingering sadness long after I finished the book.

Overall, I’d describe this as a good holiday read – atmospheric, intriguing in parts, and perfect for readers who enjoy slow-burn family mysteries set in grand old houses.

About the Book

The imposing gates of Ramsay Hall yawned open. As Serena and 4-year-old Lana walked up the long driveway, little did they know the dark secrets that lay within.

When Serena Green accepted the role of housekeeper for wealthy widower Hayden Ramsay, she never imagined her new home would be Ramsay Hall, an ancient, sprawling mansion in Northern England.

Serena quickly becomes an integral part of the household, making friends with Hayden’s younger son Hugh, despite Jack, his older brother’s, coldness towards her and Lana.

But the hall’s beautiful exterior hides many ugly secrets. Though Serena and Jack begin to grow closer, she’s confused by his behaviour around Lana. What is he guilty of? And is there more to their mother’s death than the Ramsay men will admit, even to themselves?

As the harrowing past of Ramsay Hall unravels, Serena’s fresh start becomes a fresh horror. She fears for her and Lana’s safety, but what are the bleak secrets in Serena’s own past?

This house is built on a lifetime of lies… and the truth might just bring the walls crashing down.

A twisty, gripping and utterly unputdownable new thriller that fans of Lisa Jewell, C.L. Taylor and Mark Edwards will love.

📚Buy the Book: Amazon; Waterstones; TG Jones; Bookshop.

Final Thoughts

While The House of Hidden Secrets isn’t the most unpredictable thriller I’ve read, it does have charm. The setting in Northern England gives it a moody, atmospheric quality, and readers who love old houses brimming with family secrets will find plenty to enjoy.

If you’re looking for a Gothic-style mystery with a domestic drama twist, this could be the next book to add to your summer holiday reading list.

Witchy Wednesday | Preparing for Mabon and the Autumn Equinox

As August draws to a close, I always feel the subtle shift in the air. The light lingers a little less each evening, the shadows stretch longer, and there’s a quiet whisper of change carried on the late-summer breeze. For me, this is the moment I begin preparing for Mabon, the Pagan festival of the Autumn Equinox. It’s a time of balance, of gathering the fruits of our labour, and of looking ahead to the darker months with gratitude and intention.

Of course, as a Gothic soul, I can’t help but feel the enchantment of this season. The evenings carry a romance all their own, a sense that magic lies just beyond the veil of twilight.

Witchy Wednesday | Preparing for Mabon and the Autumn Equinox 🍂✨

🌾 What is Mabon?

Mabon falls around the 21st–23rd of September, marking the Autumn Equinox when day and night are of equal length. In Pagan tradition, it is the second of the harvest festivals, a time to give thanks for abundance, share with others, and prepare for the colder months.

This celebration honours balance: light and dark, life and death, beginnings and endings. The energy of Mabon reminds us that everything exists in cycles. For those of us drawn to the Gothic, it feels like a liminal time when the veil between light and shadow grows thinner, inviting us to embrace both beauty and decay.

🔮 Witchy Ways to Celebrate Mabon

There are so many simple ways to honour this seasonal shift. Here are a few ideas to inspire you:

Candle magic – Light a candle at dusk and reflect on what you’re grateful for. As the flame burns, let it illuminate your intentions for the coming months.

Nature walks – Collect fallen leaves, conkers, or berries to create a natural altar at home. These tokens carry the energy of the season and remind us of nature’s cycles.

Kitchen witchery – Bake bread, apple pies, or blackberry crumbles using the fruits of the harvest. Infuse your cooking with love, gratitude, and intention.

Home energy – Decorate your space with autumnal colours—deep reds, burnt oranges, golden yellows—and welcome that cosy, protective energy into your home.

And if you’re like me, you may also call upon your spiritual companions—whether that’s guides, haunted objects, or ancestral energies—for protection and insight as we step into the darker half of the year.

🦇 Gothic Reads for Autumn Nights

For me, Mabon isn’t just about seasonal rituals—it’s also the perfect excuse to curl up with a haunting story as the nights draw in. If you’re looking to capture that Gothic mood, here are some recommendations:

📖 The Redcliffe Novels – My own series of vampires, werewolves, and Cornish seaside secrets. Perfect if you want passion, danger, and a hint of magic beneath the cliffs.

📖 The Darkness of Love – My Victorian vampire romance filled with lust, power, and Gothic decadence.

📖 Dracula by Bram Stoker – The classic that started it all, best revisited with candlelight and a storm outside.

📖 Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu – A Gothic vampire tale with sapphic undertones, deliciously atmospheric.

This is the season for Gothic reading—let the candlelight flicker, pour yourself a glass of something rich and dark, and surrender to the shadows.

🌙 Closing Thoughts

Mabon invites us to pause, to breathe, and to acknowledge both the light and the darkness in our lives. It is a festival of gratitude and preparation, a reminder that every ending carries the seed of a new beginning.

As I ready myself for the turning of the year, I find comfort in both the rituals of the season and the Gothic stories that mirror life’s eternal cycles.

✨ Will you welcome Mabon with gratitude, mystery, and a little Gothic magic of your own? Share your rituals and favourite autumn reads in the comments—I’d love to hear how you celebrate the equinox.

Pluckley has a reputation for being the most haunted village in the UK, with over a dozen reported ghosts. Free-for-all Friday | The Krafted Connex: This Summer’s Must-Have Travel Gadget

Summer holidays are the perfect time to escape the daily grind, but if you’re anything like me (and my family), you’ll know the stress of keeping everyone’s gadgets charged and ready to go. Between smartphones, tablets, headphones, cameras, and even the odd Nintendo Switch, we always end up with a tangled mess of cables in the bottom of the suitcase.

This year, however, I discovered a little lifesaver: The Krafted Connex.

Stylish image of The Krafted Connex: This Summer’s Must-Have Travel Gadget. Free for All Friday best witchy gifts UK pagan family pagan mom at SpookyMrsGreen.com spooky family lifestyle blog.
The Krafted Connex: This Summer’s Must-Have Travel Gadget 🌍🔌

What is Connex?

Connex is a pocket-sized, all-in-one connectivity solution designed to simplify life for anyone juggling multiple devices. Think of it as a Swiss Army knife for the 21st century traveller—one neat little gadget that replaces the bulky chargers and cables we usually drag around.

It’s compact, lightweight, and surprisingly stylish (I went for the jade green model, which feels very tactile in the hand). Best of all, it offers up to 8 charging and data transfer combinations, so whatever device you’re carrying, Connex has you covered.

Key Features That Impressed Me

  • Universal Compatibility – Whether it’s the latest smartphone or an older laptop, Connex works seamlessly with a wide range of devices. No more panicking when someone’s cable doesn’t fit!
  • Rapid Charging & Data Transfer – With advanced PD charging technology and USB-C capability, we could charge quickly in between sightseeing trips. That alone was worth its place in my suitcase.
  • Future-Ready Design – Connex includes both USB-A and USB-C inputs, making it perfect as iPhones and other devices move over to USB-C.
  • Travel-Friendly – It slipped easily into my holiday bag without taking up space.
  • Offline Data Transfer – This is a real bonus: Connex allows direct device-to-device transfers without Wi-Fi. Perfect if you don’t want to rely on cloud services when you’re travelling.

My Family’s Experience

On our recent summer holiday, the Connex was a game-changer. My daughters loved how quickly they could charge their phones before heading out again, and I appreciated the fact that I wasn’t lugging around three different chargers.

Now that we’re home, I’m still using it daily. The super-fast charging is a huge plus, and I honestly don’t think I’ll go back to my old tangle of wires.

Price and Availability

The Krafted Connex is available now in charcoal or jade directly from Kraftedtech.com for just £29.99. You can also get it from Amazon.

For that price, it’s an absolute must-have for families, frequent travellers, and anyone tired of wrestling with cables.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a reliable, compact, and stylish gadget that keeps the whole family’s tech running smoothly, I can’t recommend the Krafted Connex enough. It truly is this summer’s must-have travel accessory, and I can see it becoming a staple in our home for years to come.

Spooky Mrs Green’s Verdict: Practical, stylish, and family-approved!

My Thoughts on the Novel

Set in southern England during the Second World War, this novel draws you deep into a shadowy world where myth and reality are woven together with chilling precision. It’s part historical drama, part vampire novel in the classic Bram Stoker tradition, but with a fresh and unexpected twist.

Our heroine, Jane, is a young orphan girl who is sent away to boarding school for her safety amidst the chaos of war. But Jane is no ordinary schoolgirl. With lilac eyes and silver-white hair, she is a vampire coming of age. This is a story about self-discovery, heritage, and survival in a world that hides far more than bombs and political secrets.

As Jane begins to explore her identity and sexuality, she uncovers shocking truths about her family bloodline. Her ancestors are not only vampires, but also the infamous vampire hunters of legend. This duality creates a fascinating tension, placing Jane directly at the heart of a centuries-old conflict.

The author does a wonderful job of weaving folklore into fact. Vampire myths are interlaced with scientific reasoning and historical detail, which makes the narrative both intriguing and at times, a little overwhelming. I admit, I occasionally found myself lost among the many cultural references and threads of espionage—but that only added to the sense of mystery.

And then there’s the ending. Oh, the twist! It was hidden in plain sight the whole time, leaving me questioning the very boundaries of fiction and reality. Isn’t that the mark of a truly Gothic tale?

About the Book

Jane Van Helsing is a vampire, proud of her heritage and striking in her appearance. But her legacy is complicated: she is also descended from Abraham Van Helsing, the most famous vampire hunter of them all. Under the guidance of her beautiful aunt, Heleen Van Scheltinga, Jane is taught the ways of both vampires and men.

Against the backdrop of a Europe ravaged by war, Jane must learn to distinguish friend from foe. For in this world, vampires are hidden in plain sight, their intentions veiled in shadows. Who can be trusted? And who is waiting in the dark to betray her?

Jacob Van Helsing crafts an atmospheric and believable alternative history, where wartime secrets are not just political—they are supernatural.
