What Gifts Would My Spooky Daughter Enjoy for Her Birthday?

As the wheel of the year turns, my teenage daughter approaches a milestone: her fourteenth birthday. This enchanting young lady is a delightful mix of sass and shadow, proudly embracing her self-proclaimed identity as a satanist. Yes, dear reader, we’re fully immersed in the Goth phase, and I couldn’t be more thrilled! As a Gothic soul myself, I welcome her quirky character and unique lifestyle choices with open arms and a hearty cackle.

Now, the pressing question arises: what gifts would befit such a splendidly spooky young woman? I’ve been brewing over this for weeks, scouring the web for inspiration while stealthily tucking away a few surprise treasures. Of course, I won’t reveal those here—some secrets must remain shrouded in mystery! But I couldn’t resist sharing a few dark delights that caught my eye. Perhaps you’ll find some inspiration, too.

A Gothic Library for the Brooding Bookworm

Books are always a safe haven for a Gothic heart, and I’ve unearthed some literary gems that are perfect for cultivating a macabre mind.

The Art of Gothic Living: Dark Décor for the Modern Macabre by Paul Gambino. Find it on Amazon. This book is a treasure trove of Gothic interior design inspiration. Perfect for a teenager dreaming of transforming her bedroom into a lair of shadows and intrigue.

Gothic Life: The Essential Guide to Macabre Style by Aurelio Voltaire. Find it on Amazon. Who better than Aurelio Voltaire, the Gothic maestro himself, to guide her on embracing the art of macabre fashion and living?

Gothic Imagery: Decorative Pages, Ephemera & Clipart to Cut & Collage by Helena Cooper. Find it on Amazon. For the creative soul, this collection of Gothic ephemera offers endless possibilities for collages, scrapbooks, or eerie room décor.

Memento Mori: The Art of Contemplating Death to Live a Better Life by Joanna Ebenstein. Find it on Amazon. A thoughtful and philosophical read, this book is ideal for a young Goth exploring the deeper meaning of life and death.

Beyond Books: Other Delightful Ideas

Books are just the beginning. My Amazon store is brimming with Gothic lifestyle accessories, holistic health treasures, and spooky family finds. From skeleton-print leggings to bat-shaped jewellery organisers, there’s no shortage of gifts to charm a dark-hearted teen. Visit my store for more inspiration: SpookyMrsGreen Amazon Store.

Celebrating Individuality

I revel in my daughter’s individuality and love watching her explore her identity. Each gift is more than an object; it’s an affirmation of her unique perspective and a celebration of her growing sense of self. After all, isn’t that what birthdays are all about? Whether she’s decorating her room with skull motifs, crafting collages with Gothic ephemera, or reading about the philosophy of death, each moment contributes to her journey as a wonderfully spooky soul.

What about you, dear readers? Do you have gift ideas for your Gothlings or stories of celebrating your quirky teens? Let’s swap notes and inspire each other! Share your thoughts in the comments below, and let’s keep the spooky spirit alive.

Until next time, keep it witchy and wonderful. Blessed be!

Spooky Ghost Hunting Adventures for Adults and Children

Hello ghost hunters, and happy #WitchyWednesday on this cold and frosty January day! How are you experiencing our cold snap here in the UK? How’s the weather in your corner of the world?

Winter is a good time to share ghost stories and reflect on our spooky experiences, so today that is precisely what I will do. I want to share my story of a Christmas ghost hunt at Ruthin Castle Hotel in North Wales last December. I had a fantastic and eerie adventure while scrying in a large mirror. Read my blog post to see what happened.

Ghost Hunter Catherine Green and her friends meet Karl Beattie and Stuart Torevell at Ruthin Castle Hotel Most Haunted Experience. Spooky Ghost Hunting Adventures for Adults and Children

My Christmas night out with friends was a ghost hunt. We attended a Most Haunted event which included a three-course meal, an introduction by Karl Beattie and Stuart Torevell, and an extensive ghost hunt inside Ruthin Castle Hotel. While it is a working hotel leaving us with some restrictions as to where we could investigate, we pretty much had freedom to explore all the nooks and crannies of the place.

I thoroughly enjoyed attending this event. The organisers greeted me like an old friend, and I quickly recognised that it is an extended family of ghost hunters that return to Most Haunted because it is familiar, professional and yet still feels intimate. We had time and space to explore the hotel’s most haunted room which has a strange, abandoned attic above it. I’ve never seen a hotel room set up like it! I suppose it was a suite back in the old days, since it has a small hallway with a separate doorway into the main bedroom and living area, a separate bathroom, and a stairwell leading up to the attic. That was a fascinating historical exploration, and my ghost hunting friends experienced some activity in the bathroom that they found exciting.

My Big Spooky Experience

My big spooky experience happened just inside the main bedroom. Having wandered between rooms observing a Ouija board sĂ©ance in the living area and my friends in the bathroom asking for responses from the ghosts, I returned to the bedroom and as I stepped through the door, I felt a strange presence around me. It was as though I was overcome by a powerful energy, and I knew it was a man. I felt like I wasn’t big enough and I needed to expand my physical form to be taller. I’m only 5’ tall and petite build, so it was a strange sensation.

I stared into the large mirror and tried to focus inwardly on the presence that connected to me. He spoke inside my mind, his voice booming and loud, “I AM RICHARD!” When I asked him for more information, he seemed vague and I think he struggled to hold a connection with me. He conveyed to me that he was a powerful man in life, and that he was used to being obeyed, but he wasn’t unpleasant. I felt that he might be a military man, and he wore a red jacket. I haven’t been able to corroborate any historical information since the event, but the experience itself was fascinating.

Scrying with Strange Effects

One of the lead investigators watched me scrying in the mirror and she noticed that my features seemed to morph and change. My face sagged, my glasses disappeared, and it looked as though I had blood around my mouth. She took some photos, and I was surprised to see my transformation in the reflection. There was definitely something trying to communicate, but I just couldn’t keep up the connection for too long. Still, it was fun!

Freaky Portrait in the Hotel

There are lots of old paintings and portraits at Ruthin Castle Hotel, but one caught our attention. We got chatting to some fellow investigators during our meal, and they told us about an experience at the same event in the previous year, where they checked photographs and discovered something spooky in the reflection of a painting. They took us to view the painting after the meal and we were amazed. When you observe the portrait, you see a man who appears to have a mark on his forehead that could be a bullet wound, or maybe just a smudge on the painting due to deterioration over time.

When you look at the same painting reflected in an adjacent mirror, you see the same man completely intact with no mark on his forehead. It is clean and fresh, and the mirror itself is nondescript and simply there for ornamental decoration. We were flabbergasted! I took photos of the painting and its reflection. What do you make of it?

Exciting Ghost Hunts Planned for 2025

I’m still riding high from my Most Haunted ghost hunt, and I’m excited to do another one later this year if I can fit it into my calendar. In the meantime, I have booked a junior ghost hunting event for my daughters in February. They will be investigating Hallam Mill in Stockport under supervision from an experienced ghost hunting team that we met at Paracon. It will be their first official ghost hunt, and they are very excited! I recently introduced them to Ouija board seances at home and they loved doing that.

After that I am excited to visit Newsham Park Hospital in Liverpool with my ghost hunting friends. It’s a location that I’ve known about for several years and I can’t wait to visit. While I haven’t booked anything official after that, I do intend to visit the Secret Bunker in Nantwich that has evaded me for the past fifteen years. Whenever I was booked to attend, something seemed to intervene and stop it from happening. Something spooky, perhaps?

Do you have any ghost stories to share or ghost hunting adventures planned soon? Share them in the comments and stay spooky!

How to Care for Your Husband and his Spiralling Mental Health

Hello, folks, and happy #MummyMonday! Today it is back to school for my daughters and back in routine for our family after what I can only describe as a flat Christmas holiday. My daughters enjoyed their time off and that’s the main thing, but my husband and I have struggled.

Let’s explore together how we navigate spiralling mental health in middle aged men, especially when they are late-diagnosed autistic and struggling to manage in a world that’s not set up to help them.

Image of two people with jigsaw pieces in their heads resembling complex mental health situations. How to care for your husband and his spiralling mental health middle aged autism diagnosis ADHD dyspraxia at SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog.

How to Care for Your Husband and his Spiralling Mental Health

My Husband is Autistic

My husband was diagnosed autistic in summer 2024 at the age of 42. He has struggled for his entire adult life, and I should know because I’ve been there with him. We got together when we were eighteen and despite attending separate universities hundreds of miles apart, we have mostly been around each other during that time. And yet, I never recognised his differences until we were married and had children.

I suppose my first major red flag was the way he responded when I got pregnant. He ran away and hid, metaphorically. I mean, he attended all the appointments that I required him to, he was there for the birth, he took paternity leave, but emotionally he disappeared. It was a hard lesson for me, and one that I had to relearn two years later when I had our second child. I felt completely alone and am basically a single parent.

Struggling to Cope with Work

Throughout our marriage we have struggled to maintain work-life balance. My husband is very much involved in his career to the point where he refuses to take annual leave, he doesn’t allow time off for medical appointments, he will do everything to make life more difficult for himself and his family. And I know he doesn’t do it intentionally. He cares too much about a business that doesn’t belong to him and a company that probably doesn’t value him like we do. But now he is stuck.

My husband is experiencing a big change of routine and a change of environment in the workplace, and he is losing control. He hates that. Everything is changing and he can’t do anything to stop it. And that means he is grumpy and irritable at home, he is exhausted all the time from putting in the hours and the energy at work, and he has no interest in life. I am seriously worried about it. But we have no help.

The NHS is Useless for Mental Health Support

It took about three years for my husband to receive his autism assessment once I managed to get him to our GP and request a referral. It took me ten years to get him to that point, and only after we had separated for a year, and I had to involve his mother in the process of reconciliation. We are still working on our marriage because it was badly damaged, and I don’t think it was ever healthy to begin with. We are at the mercy of the NHS for support, and they are not forthcoming. We are in limbo.

My husband was advised to seek a diagnosis of ADHD alongside being autistic, and he was told that he may have dyspraxia. I had to Google that one! He then had to return to his GP and request a referral for the ADHD diagnosis, but the NHS do not test for dyspraxia so that would be a private referral. He’s not ready to consider that one yet so we leave it hanging in the background.

For his referral for ADHD testing, he must fill out more online tick box forms, and he really struggles with personal admin tasks. I can’t do it for him because I am not his medical proxy, and he would need to visit our GP surgery and give his written consent. Since he works during all the time that the surgery is open and he refuses to take time off work for anything, you can see my frustration with the system.

Marital Counselling and Other Therapy Options

And then we broach the subject of therapy. We paid for private marital counselling for almost three years when our children were young, and it almost bankrupted us. We just about survived the process but eventually our counsellor reached the limit of what they could do to help, and they ended our sessions. My husband was not doing what we needed him to do, and now I understand why. This was way before I began to suspect he was autistic so at the time I assumed he just didn’t care enough about me and about our family. I was wrong. He cares very deeply, but he shows it in different ways.

My husband was advised to seek Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) by the professionals that diagnosed his autistic condition. Since then, he has waited for official confirmation that never came, he and I have chased both our GP surgery and the external company that provided the diagnosis, and he had to fill out more online forms and set up a video call meeting with someone that was supposed to help. They told him that he will be redirected to where he needs and now, we are waiting again.

We are Lost and Alone

The NHS is completely useless, and my autistic husband is left to research and chase possible therapy options, all the while working a middle-management full-time job with all its baggage. He earns the wage that pays the bills, and my job situation is a whole other story. Suffice to say that he cannot afford to quit his job or take time off sick. We do not qualify for any benefit support. Anything we do, we fund independently.

So, there we are, lost and alone. I am working hard as an unpaid carer who is now navigating the SEN referral route for our daughters through school. One of them has an undiagnosed eating disorder and the other is possibly autistic like her dad, but I can’t be sure. I am waiting for appointments and that can take around fifteen months. In the meantime, I am struggling as I try to care for my family. Deep, healing breath!

Mummy Monday: How to have a Happy New Year

Hello, folks, and happy #MummyMonday! I trust that you enjoyed a relaxing festive week and took time for yourself. I had three days off work and spent time with friends and family, caught up on sleep, and continue to rest in-between my shifts at the discount retail store where I work.

And now we are heading into 2025, how exciting! I must admit that this year I have been a little cold towards the Christmas season. Usually, the magic has me excited and brings out my inner child but this year I just felt tired and defeated by the world. It was a real struggle to keep cheerful for my children, and they noticed that my mood had changed. It was probably not our best Christmas, but it certainly wasn’t unpleasant.

Let’s explore how it feels when you simply do not enjoy the Christmas season, and you cannot bring yourself to be excited for New Year’s Eve when the whole world seems to be celebrating.

Colourful elegant blue and gold image saying Happy New Year 2025 at SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog.
Mummy Monday: How to have a Happy New Year.

How to have a Happy New Year

How do you feel today? I am ok. I am living with vertigo right now, and that was diagnosed in December. I have managed to continue working despite my GP offering to sign me off sick. I just didn’t feel ill enough to justify time off, especially when we are short staffed, and I knew that my colleagues needed my support. Instead, I have made time to rest at home when I’m not at work, channelling Reiki healing energy.

Typically, this has been my busiest Christmas season socially, with planned activities and events every weekend in the month before Christmas Day. But now we have finally spent a whole weekend at home without having to go anywhere or do anything, and that feels good. I am now looking forward to our family tradition of spending New Year’s Day at Talacre Beach in North Wales. It is a dog-friendly beach with a beautiful old lighthouse that captures my imagination, and my family and I feel so much better when we embrace the chilly sea air and walk along the beach. Then we spend an hour in the amusement arcade before a steady drive home. It’s all about the simple pleasures.

How do you feel?

We don’t all enjoy the chaos of Christmas and New Year. Many people struggle without their usual daily routine (like my husband), and it can leave then grumpy and irritable. Others may have trauma associated with the holidays, and they just want to get through the season. However you feel about celebrating Christmas and New Year, it is absolutely fine. If you want to continue as normal and not make a big fuss, do that. If you want to go all out, decorate your home, throw a party, indulge in treats, do that. This week for me is mostly about regular routine around my children being off school. And I am ok with that.

No Grand Plans for 2025

I have no grand plans for 2025. I know that I cannot force people to read my books, and I am not going to become a famous author overnight. It will most probably never happen in my lifetime. But I continue to write my books, to publish my books, and to attempt to share them at events and online. It makes me happy. There are challenges in my day job that I plan to address and try to improve my situation there. And we have ongoing challenges as a neurodiverse family. We will move slowly into 2025 and carry on as usual. Happy New Year!

A Christmas Poem by Georgina Green

Christmas is here

So Santa’s near

The elves are on their way

At your house they will stay.

Christmas is soon

You will hear merry tunes

Carollers knocking on doors

Singing carols dating back to the wars.

Christmas is coming

So times are loving

Family gatherings starting to happen

While Santa starts to get back in action.

It’s Christmas time

The bells will chime

As Christmas Day arrives

Presents become alive.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Merry Christmas everyone! Enjoy the festive season in whatever way you choose, or don’t celebrate it if that is your preference. Either way I send Yule blessings to you.

WitchyWednesday: Embracing the Winter Solstice in a Busy World

The Winter Solstice, also known as Yule, marks the longest night and the shortest day of the year. Traditionally, it was a time to retreat into the warmth of our homes, gather around the fire, and tell stories to keep our spirits high as winter storms raged outside. It was a moment to pause, reflect, and prepare for the gradual return of the light.

But in today’s modern world, many of us find ourselves caught in a whirlwind of activity during December. The demands of Christmas parties, family gatherings, gift shopping, and overtime at work often leave little room for rest. Read my blog post to see how you can make time for self-care during this busy season, especially if you are a retail worker like me.

Image of a robin sitting on snow covered branches with a pentagram image above. Text reads, “Merry Solstice www.spookymrsgreen.com.” Winter Solstice celebration at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Merry Solstice from SpookyMrsGreen!

Embracing the Winter Solstice in a Busy World

As a store assistant, this season has reached fever pitch for me. The days are long, the tasks relentless, and the holiday cheer can sometimes feel more like a weight than a joy. I’m not allowed to take holiday in December, so I’ve had to carefully plan my days off to ensure I have moments to breathe. This year, Winter Solstice will be my opportunity to pause, reconnect with my family, and nurture my own well-being before the final rush of Christmas.

Honouring the Solstice in a Busy Schedule

Even with our packed calendars, it is possible to carve out moments of solace and celebration for the Winter Solstice. Here are some ways we can honour this ancient tradition while managing modern demands:

1. Create Your Own Hearth

If you don’t have a literal fireplace, create a symbolic one. Light candles, dim the overhead lights, and gather with your loved ones to share stories or simply enjoy each other’s company. This small act can bring a sense of warmth and connection to your home, even in the midst of chaos.

2. Embrace the Darkness

The Winter Solstice is a time to honour the dark as much as the light. Use the long evening to slow down. Turn off screens and immerse yourself in a quiet activity, such as journaling, reading, or meditating. Reflect on the past year and set intentions for the months ahead.

3. Connect with Nature

Take a short walk outdoors, even if it’s just to your garden or a nearby park. Feel the crisp winter air, notice the bare branches, and acknowledge the natural cycle of rest and renewal. If you’re able, gather natural elements like pinecones or holly to decorate your home and bring the outside in.

4. Prioritise Rest

This one is crucial for anyone feeling burned out. Allow yourself permission to rest, even if it’s just for an hour. Turn off your alarm clock on your day off, take a nap, or curl up with a warm drink and a favourite film. Rest isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity.

5. Simplify Your Celebrations

If you feel overwhelmed by the pressure of hosting or attending elaborate Christmas gatherings, give yourself permission to simplify. Perhaps you can celebrate Yule with a simple meal, a small gift exchange, or a quiet evening with loved ones.

My Solstice Plan

This Winter Solstice, I plan to spend time with my family, reconnect with my husband, and allow myself to rest. The hustle and bustle of my work will still be there when the day ends, but for that brief window, I will focus on recovery. I’ll light candles, play some soothing music, and share a quiet meal with my loved ones. I’ll also take a moment to reflect on the year’s challenges and joys, setting my intentions for the brighter days ahead.

Encouragement for You

If you, too, are feeling the strain of the season, I encourage you to find your own ways to honour the Winter Solstice. Even small acts of mindfulness and rest can make a big difference. Remember, the solstice is a reminder that darkness eventually gives way to light. It’s a chance to pause, recharge, and embrace the beauty of stillness before the busyness of Christmas Day.

So, this WitchyWednesday, let’s celebrate the Solstice by slowing down and finding peace amidst the storm. Wishing you all a restful and magical Yule!

5 Must-Have Accessories for Outdoor Family Fun

Outdoor family adventures are a great way to bond, explore nature, and create lasting memories. Whether you are planning a quick weekend camping trip, an action-packed hike, or a picnic in the park, having the right gear can make a huge difference.

To make sure your next outing is successful, here are some must-have accessories that will help improve your experience and keep everybody happy and safe.

A Durable and Spacious Backpack

A reliable backpack is needed for any family adventure. It will help you carry all the necessities that you need for your outdoor adventures. Look for one with many different compartments so that you can organize water bottles, snacks, and first aid kits, as well as some personal items. Make sure you choose a backpack that has weather-resistant materials and comfortable padded straps to make carrying it easy during hikes or long walks. If you are heading out with younger children, you might want to think about getting a family-sized backpack that can accommodate all the extra equipment needed, like toys, nappies, or blankets.

Portable Seating and Dining Options

Comfort is definitely something that you need to think about when you are spending a day outdoors. Portable seating, such as foldable chairs or a small picnic blanket, can ensure that everybody has a comfortable place to sit down. Pair these with a sturdy, lightweight table or a nice picnic mat if you want to eat outdoors. Make sure that you look for gear that is easy to transport and clean, as this can help save you effort and time while keeping the family comfortable on your outdoor adventures. Portable dining solutions make picnics easier and more enjoyable and will mean that you can relax in style during your adventure.

Outdoor Games and Activities

No family outing is complete without having a few fun games involved. Pack items like soccer balls, Frisbees, or card games to keep children occupied, and for nature-focused activities, think about packing some binoculars or creating a scavenger hunt kit so that your kids can explore the outdoors. Make sure you tailor your choices to the destination you are visiting and that everybody stays engaged so you can make the most of your outdoor activities.

A Durable, Versatile Vehicle

This could arguably be one of the most important accessories for your outdoor family fun. A reliable vehicle will ensure that you can handle diverse terrains. A durable, versatile vehicle like the Mercedes Benz 4×4 is perfect for taking your family on outdoor adventures. It’s robust, has off-road capabilities, and has a spacious interior, meaning that it is designed to handle everything from mountain trails to sandy beaches. It provides you with plenty of space for gear, seating for the whole family, and the peace of mind that comes with driving a reliable vehicle. Whether you are hoping to go off-road or cruise along scenic highways, this car will give you a smooth and enjoyable ride.

Creating Great Memories

Family outdoor adventures are all about creating great memories and experiences. Having the right accessories can make the day run more smoothly and feel more enjoyable. From durable backpacks to outdoor games and a reliable vehicle, these essentials ensure that your adventure is not only comfortable and safe but also filled with fun.

Countless parents find this tricky, as they don’t want to outright ask what their kids want. Thankfully, you don’t need to struggle with it, no matter how old your teenagers are. A few particular picks could be more than worth the time and effort.

Gifts for Teenagers They Wouldn’t Roll Their Eyes At

1. Practical Phone

Teenagers always want the newest phone, and it’s easy to see why. While that mightn’t always be an option, it doesn’t mean you can’t get them a phone they’ll love. Focusing on something practical and relatively affordable can be more than worth it. You’ll have plenty of options, and you shouldn’t even need a loan to pay for them.

Reconditioned phones can be one of the better recommendations. These are quite affordable, and they’ll look and function just as well as a new one. Your teenagers mightn’t even realize it’s a second-hand phone. It’s a win-win for everyone, so there’s no reason not to consider it.

2. Skincare Set

Teenagers start looking after their appearance more and more as they get older. It could be worth leaning into that and encouraging them with it. One of the easiest ways you can do this is to pick them up a skincare set. While this shouldn’t be the only gift, it can certainly be a nice one to get.

It helps them look after themselves a little more, and they could start being more and more hygienic because of it. There are plenty of options out there, for men and women, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding the right one for your teenager.

3. New Console

Sometimes, it’s worth going out of your way to get your teenager a gift that’s relatively expensive. One of the more notable options for this is a new console. Your teenager could’ve already expressed an interest in getting a new one. You’ll have more than enough of a reason to go for it.

Even if your teenager hasn’t said something about it, it’s still worth considering. Think of the console they already have and see if there’s a newer version of it. You’ll end up getting them a gift they’ll end up using and loving for a few years, at least.

Keep Gift Giving Simple

Finding the perfect gifts for teenagers for your kids can often be complicated. They mightn’t be vocal about what they want, and you could struggle to think of something. This doesn’t need to be as tricky as you could think. More than a few gift ideas could stand out.

Not only will they be great picks, but your teenager should love them. You wouldn’t have to worry about whether or not it’ll be a great gift for your teenager. There’s no reason not to consider a few specific options.
