The Best Books To Get Your Kids Based On Their Age!

Reading is such an essential skill that all children should develop from a very young age. It’s never too early to teach your child to read, and the sooner they start seeing books and engaging with them, the earlier they start to develop their own literacy skills. Your child is unlikely to be able to properly read until they’re in second grade. At this point, they can read words and sentences independently, possibly even reading through entire books. They won’t be the most advanced books, but they’re still books!

Even so, most kids will begin to learn to read when they’re around two. Here, they can recite words, recognize letters on a page, and answer questions related to things that they see in books. Still, it won’t be until they’re in preschool before they start learning the alphabet and can really sound out words.

Throughout this process, you can help your children by giving them books to read – and by reading to them. Naturally, you need to have suitable books for their age range. Today, we’re going to go through the best types of books you should get for your kids depending on how old they are.

So, let’s find out:
Baby loves books! #MummyMonday Photo of Georgina Green daughter of Catherine Green at SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Baby loves books! #MummyMonday

Ages 0-3

What books should you be getting kids when they’re between 0 and 3? Obviously, in the early years, you are buying books to read to them. So, storybooks and nursery rhymes are all great things to read. Even if they don’t understand you in the first few months, the sound of your voice can soothe them and help them sleep.

As they get beyond their first birthday, reading to them becomes more significant. Again, storybooks help them, but you should also start buying picture books. Showing your baby pictures and interactive pop-up books can help them identify things and become more engaged. It’s the very early stages of their development, and it can help them spot things in real life that they’ve seen in books – like food, animals, etc.

By the time they get to around 2 or 3, you’re going to start sending them to nursery or pre-school. As such, you need to buy books that will help them lay the foundations of their reading skills. As mentioned in this article: Letter Recognition: How To Help Your Child Learn The Alphabet, alphabet books are great at this stage. These are the most basic kids’ books you can buy, teaching your children all the letters of the alphabet. As we said, this lays the foundations by getting them to recognize letters and understand the sounds they make. When they start to read words, they can sound them out based on the alphabet.

Ages 4-7

When your child passes their fourth birthday, they’ll be starting kindergarten. Therefore, it’s time to progress their books to things with a few more words in them. Here, you’re still looking at books that are largely illustrative. Don’t buy your kids any books that are full of writing with no pictures as they simply will not be engaged. They are not going to be able to read this much at this stage, so don’t force them to.

Instead, look for kid’s books that tell stories and have pictures to illustrate the text. Each page should have a couple of lines of text for your child to read, and they can use the pictures to help them figure out what’s going on. In essence, you’re easing your child into the process of reading, slowly but surely. Start with books that have a sentence per page for the younger ages, then build up and up. When they’re 7, they should have a firmer grasp of how to read, be able to string a few sentences together in a row and understand what they mean.

Ages 8-12

Now, you are getting to the point where your children really start to improve their ability to read. By the time a child is 12, they can read actual novels. We’re talking about things like Harry Potter and many other kids’ fictional books. This is where the illustrations get phased out, replaced by more and more text. When they’re 8 or 9, you might still get books with a few illustrations here and there, only there are paragraphs per page, rather than just a sentence or two.

Again, it follows the idea of gradually exposing your kids to more writing. When they get competent at reading illustrative books, you can get books that are full of writing. Be careful with your choices; start by picking books that have large writing on each page, so there’s technically less to read – and the larger letters are easier for kids to see and understand. Ideally, by the time your child leaves elementary school, they should be moving on to proper books. There should no longer be images on pages, and your child should be able to read through the whole book by themselves.

Ages 12+

At this point, things can really vary depending on what your kid enjoys reading. As just mentioned, they should be able to read proper books by now. It is a good idea to get them novels aimed at kids their age, just to be sure they’re reading things that are appropriate for them. As they get older, they’ll try more advanced books that are aimed at a more adult audience.

Ultimately, you need to buy books that are suitable for your kids depending on how old they are and how good their reading skills will be. Some parents want to speed up the learning process by getting books that are above the average reading level. For instance, when a child is 7, they buy books that are completely full of text and long paragraphs. Some kids can read these at this point, but most will be unable to. Let your children progress naturally by gradually being exposed to longer sentences, longer words, and more writing. Start with the picture books, phase out the images, and your child will learn to read at a good pace.

#ProductReview: Gift Hampers UK

I love receiving gift hampers, and I was delighted to be offered a gift hamper for review from Gift Hampers UK.

Read on to see what delicious treats I received and how I enjoyed them.

My Review for Gift Hampers UK

I received a vegetarian friendly gift hamper for review, which is perfect for my dietary preference. Gift Hampers UK offer something for everyone, including gluten free hampers, which is great for those friends or family members that are tricky to buy for. The vegetarian gift hamper I reviewed included a bottle of white wine, cheddar and cracked black pepper bites, luxury dark chocolate, luxury chocolate chip cookies, caramelized cashews, caramel coated popcorn (my husband loved this snack!), a breakfast tea gift and an afternoon tea gift.

All the treats were delicious, and I am being honest. I found the caramel popcorn a little sickly, but my husband ate the whole portion in one sitting. The wine is a nice Chardonnay which we found smooth and easy to drink. I am not a tea drinker, but I did enjoy the tea in this hamper. It is infused with herbs which gives it a nice taste and makes it a bit more special than you average daily brew.  The chocolate is by Love Cocoa, a James Cadbury company, so we know it is a heritage brand and it tastes delicious. It will last a while because you only need a few pieces of chocolate to satisfy your craving. The chocolate chip cookies didn’t last long at all and were a very tasty breakfast treat. And the extra mature cheddar and cracked black pepper bites were nice but perhaps a little too heavy on the cheese for my liking.

Pretty Packaging makes a Difference

I liked the presentation of my gift hamper. It came in a luxury box which is recyclable, wrapped in ribbon and with tissue paper inside. My kittens absolutely loved the polystyrene packaging and had great fun tipping it all over the floor and chasing it around. My dog enjoyed eating the packaging! This is the kind of hamper that would look lovely under your Christmas tree, if you didn’t have destructive pets. I would certainly gift one of these hampers to any of my friends or family members as a special treat. Perhaps you are looking for ideas for corporate gifts this year? A luxury gift would be ideal for that special client or as a reward for a good customer. There are lots of options available for corporate hampers so take a look and see what you can find.

Gift hampers are an ideal option for people who don’t like clutter. Once they have eaten the food they can recycle the packaging, and they enjoy a special treat with products that you don’t find in your local supermarket. Add Gift Hampers UK to your Christmas shopping list. You will be impressed!

#BookTalk: Witch vs Werewolf in “Love Redeems (A Redcliffe Novel)”

Happy Hump Day! Since we are so close to Halloween, I decided to share an excerpt from book 3 in the Redcliffe novels series, “Love Redeems.”

Jessica has embraced her heritage as a witch and is causing chaos in the werewolf pack, much to Danny Mason’s annoyance.

All are wearing black clothes and look mysterious. 3D book cover image for "Love Redeems (A Redcliffe Novel)" from the vampire and werewolf fantasy book series by LGBT fantasy book writer Catherine Green including phone and iPad download images for tablet, iPhone, and android book readers.

Excerpt from “Love Redeems (A Redcliffe Novel)” by Catherine Green

“Of course we frighten the alpha,” she said scornfully, in my mind, “He is but a wolf. We are far superior. Allow me to demonstrate.”

And she sprang forward without warning, heading straight for my body. I cried out, trying to move away from Danny and Simon, but I was too slow. My body convulsed as Suri merged her spirit with mine. I felt it happen, but I was powerless to react. I had no idea what I was dealing with. I was still just a witch in training. Opening my eyes, I turned slowly, searching for the alpha male. Danny was standing in the doorway, staring at me, his own power flaring, swirling around him in a delicious storm of turmoil. Licking my lips, I advanced upon him slowly, stalking my prey. My body felt lithe and supple, and while I still looked and walked like a human, I could feel a tail swishing behind me, and my muscles were that of the snow tiger. She was superimposed around my body, and both wolves could clearly see her.

“Jessica,” Danny said, shaking his head, “Jessica, please don’t do this. Send her away. Fight her.”
I laughed, and my voice sounded deep and throaty, ending in a growl.

“I do not want to send her away,” I said, “I want to embrace her power. She is my tiger. We work together.”

“You don’t mean that,” Danny replied, “Remember who I am.”
“You are the alpha male,” I said, “You are worthy of our attention.”

“Jessica,” Danny said, “I do not want to play with your tiger. I want you,” he paused, staring at me with glowing blue eyes, “Jessica, I want you.” He said again.

I hesitated, mulling over his words. Something stirred within me, a memory of another man who looked identical to the alpha. The other man was not a wolf. He was dead. I didn’t want a dead thing. I wanted heat, power, and life. I moved towards the alpha, my body preparing to pounce. My movements were smooth, agile and feline. I loved the way I moved, so graceful and delicate, so strong. I pounced.

#TheRedcliffeNovels Series

The Redcliffe novels series follow the adventures of bookshop owner Jessica Stone as she meets a man and falls in love, only to discover the hidden werewolf secrets of her close friends. That includes Simon Bunce, manager of the Ship Inn, who turns out to be lieutenant to the Redcliffe werewolf pack, and lover to the wolf alpha Danny Mason. He fights to protect his master from the ethereal animal familiar who threatens to claim their pack. Who knew the Cornish coast could be so deadly?

Sink your teeth into the captivating world of vampires and werewolves in Catherine Green’s LGBT fantasy series! Book 3, “Love Redeems (The Redcliffe Novels),” is a thrilling journey into love and redemption.

A Halloween Poem

It’s the spookiest week of the year and today I share with you a poem written by my 8-year-old daughter. She was inspired recently when I attended an online poetry class.

Tell us what you think of it in the comments!

#WitchyWednesday Happy Halloween! From SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
#WitchyWednesday Happy Halloween!

Halloween

Halloween is spooky

And very, very gloomy.

It’s got spiders

But no gliders

It is code black

Not cute pink

It is so dark

With no spark

Maybe you could make it bright

But not as bright as the daylight.

Choosing the Right High School

I cannot believe we have reached this milestone. It is time to apply for High School for our eldest daughter, who is now in her final year at Primary School. Excuse me while I cry in the corner for a minute.

#MummyMonday Choosing the Right High School by SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
#MummyMonday Choosing the Right High School

Choosing the Right High School

Ok, I’m back! Seriously, this is a huge deal for me. Back in the early 90s when I started high school, we simply went to the local school that we could walk to. There was no choice of neighbouring schools, we weren’t Catholic, my parents had no expectations of finding a school that was best for me and my siblings. How times have changed. We have been invited to school open evenings (pre- and post-Covid), we have pored over prospectuses, we have studied bus routes, and we have spoken to our friends about their experiences of choosing the right high school. It seems like a monumental task.

We are fortunate here in mid Cheshire to have several good schools within the catchment area. There is one in our town which is where we assumed we would send our children to. My husband and I both walked to school in our home town (he went to the rival Catholic school), he had a much better school experience than I did, and we felt that our local high school would be sufficient. Then we visited a girls’ high school in the nearby town and suddenly it wasn’t so clear. Our daughter loved it! We loved it. She will have to catch a bus and leave home earlier than she currently does, but she is excited about this new school possibility.

Single sex high school

The girls’ high school is a ten-minute drive from home and the bus goes right past our house on the route. It is a large school, much bigger than the one in our town that we previously thought we would be applying for. This high school is welcoming, modern, well equipped and seems to have something for everyone. I think it was the purpose-built dance studio and drama studio that clinched it for our daughter, but she fell in love. She can study dance or drama at GCSE level if she wants to. I never had that opportunity. She will have a business studies class as part of her curriculum. She has access to an engineering workshop where the girls are encouraged to explore STEM subjects, build electric cars, and be part of the future with design and technology.

My humiliating high school experiences

I still remember being humiliated in Year 9 by my electronics teacher because I struggled to understand a basic circuit board. He made me sit at my desk almost in tears after shouting at me in front of the whole class, and guess what, I lost interest in technology after that because I thought I wasn’t good enough. My high school experience was poor by comparison, and I was anxious about this transition for my daughter. I now feel more confident about our decision because I truly feel that she will be encouraged to develop her natural skills and talents and to learn new ones, which ultimately will give her confidence and capability to pursue whatever career she chooses in the future.

How was your experience of high school, and how did that inform your decision for your children? Please share in the comments.

#Review: Inflata Nation Manchester

My children love indoor play centres. They have spent many happy hours in the soft play, flinging themselves down slides and jumping in the ball pool. We missed our indoor fun during the pandemic.

I was very happy to be offered a visit to Inflata Nation Manchester in return for a review of our experience. Read on to see how we enjoyed our family day out.

#Review: Inflata Nation Manchester

Naturally my first concern was cleanliness and how many people would attend Inflata Nation. Kids carry germs and we know this, so how bad would it be in there with the threat of Covid-19 as well? I am pleased to report that the venue we visited in Manchester was clean and well organised. While it was busy, I could see that visitor numbers were being regulated, people were respectful of each other’s personal space, and we had lockers available to keep our belongings safe while we were on the bouncy castle.

I have visited Inflata Nation Manchester previously, but I didn’t go in the bouncy castle at the time because I didn’t want to go without my glasses. This time I was brave, and I went in. I am very glad that I did! There is something about a bouncy castle that brings out my inner child, and I was soon jumping along feeling like a 10-year-old again. Until I fell over and remembered I am nearly forty! I have not laughed so much in a long time because it was fun to fling myself around, falling over and bouncing off the sides without a care in the world.

My husband loves a bouncy castle

My husband loves a bouncy castle and he had great fun scrambling up and down slides, trying the big slide that our children didn’t like the look of, and bouncing so close to me and the girls that we kept falling over. He led us through the obstacle course, we played in the section with the spinning bouncy castle apparatus, we explored dark corners and we had fun in the ball pool. Our children loved the ball pool, especially when they found the tubes blowing out air that could suspend the balls as if by magic. That kept them entertained for a while.

We had to wear coloured wrist bands for our session that lasted for an hour. I think it was a good way to regulate numbers of people on the apparatus. An hour is certainly long enough for your average middle-aged parent and child combination. I couldn’t have coped with longer than that, but I think my children could have happily stayed on the bouncy castle all afternoon. They were incredibly thirsty after the session, so we enjoyed a cold slushie drink in the café afterwards. There is a choice of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, cakes and crisps available which is just what you need for an energy boost after a good bouncy castle session.

I recommend Inflata Nation

I certainly recommend Inflata Nation for families with active children, and the cost is reasonable. You can plan birthday parties in there as well. We have now booked another session at a different location, this time in Runcorn, and I can’t wait to embrace my inner child again!

Three Tips That Can Help Build Your Child’s Self-Esteem

As a parent, you want to do everything in your power to help your child have the best life possible. One of the most critical aspects of that is building their self-esteem. Healthy self-esteem can help them reach their goals and be successful in life, but many children struggle with this.

This blog post will discuss three tips that can help build your child’s self-esteem and give them all the tools they need for success!

Photo by Luna Lovegood from Pexels

#1. Give Your Child Responsibilities and Chores

You should help your child feel like they are contributing to the family and helping everyone out. This will give them a sense of purpose. They will feel important, and it is a great way to build their self-esteem. You can also encourage them by saying how proud you are of the work they did. This tip is less about making your child’s self-esteem, but more about getting them used to being responsible for specific tasks so that when they get older, they know what is expected of them in a job or school setting. Children who have learned how to be dependable at an early age tend to do better later in life because they have already developed these skills!

#2. Encourage Independence

As your child gets older, they may start to want more independence. This is a great thing! It would help if you encouraged this because it will help them be successful in life and achieve their goals. The way your child dresses and decides on a specific appearance is also increasing a sense of independence. For example, to find out how much do braces cost or that how much for that designer handbag. Asking for help when needed does not make someone weak; it shows that they are independent enough to know what they need and how to get there on their own. It can sometimes be hard for parents to let their children make some decisions on their own, but it is important to allow them the freedom and independence they need.

#3. Show Unconditional Love Every Day

When your child is feeling down or struggling, they should know that you love them no matter what. No matter how many mistakes they make in life, it does not mean that their parents will stop loving them. Only showing unconditional love when something terrible happens can give the impression to children that there are only certain times where they are loved and cared for; this isn’t true! It would be best if you let your child know how much you care about them and appreciate everything they do every day.

In conclusion, children need to be loved and cared for to build their self-esteem. As parents, it is your job to ensure that they are creating a strong sense of self so that when they get older, they will know how much you love them unconditionally!

Scary Supernatural Action in Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel) #TheRedcliffeNovels

It is the spookiest month of the year, and today I share a scary excerpt from my debut novel, Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel).

There is nothing gentle in my books. You have been warned!

“Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel)” Excerpt

Suddenly he was on his feet, so fast I didn’t see. He lunged at me and I screamed, jumping back as he grabbed for my neck. He fell to the floor and I backed up, finding myself pressed against the wall, staring at him in horror. He had tried to bite me! He wasn’t human. I couldn’t move; my body was frozen in fear as I watched Jack gather himself and stand up slowly. It wasn’t Jack that looked at me from those beautiful blue eyes. It was the monster from my dreams, and I screamed as he lunged at me again. I called his name, trying desperately to bring him back.

In a blur of movement someone pushed me away from Jack and put himself between us. It was Marcus. His eyes were glowing silver, his face white, and then he turned to Jack, restraining him, whispering to him. Jack went still in his arms and Marcus turned his head to me, looking very human again.

“Are you alright, Jessica?” he asked gently.
