My Review of  “The Buddhist CEO” by Thane Lawrie

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review. This was an interesting read, but I am confused about whether the book is a novel or a memoir. It is presented as a novel, but it reads very much like non-fiction. I could hear the author describing their experiences as I read the book. Now, that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of it and it was certainly something different to what I have read previously. This is the first Scottish novel I have read in a long time that doesn’t reference violence and/or drug use, so that in itself is refreshing. Not all Buddhists live on a mountain in an exotic country. Some live in a city in Scotland, and it is nice to hear their stories and relate to their experiences. If you are interested in Buddhism and how it applies to the business world then this book is for you. I enjoyed it, once I got over the initial confusion.

About the Book

Hamish’s chance encounter with a Buddhist monk has a profound effect on his life. He dreams of becoming a monk one day, but he loves his family deeply, and at work his compassionate leadership unexpectedly makes him CEO of a struggling nonprofit. Over the years, he strives to apply Buddhism to everything he does, often seeking peace, solitude, and everyday answers at a Buddhist monastery.

On the face of it, Hamish is successful, and satisfied with his efforts to square the material with the spiritual. But behind the scenes, staff plot against him, and mysterious physical symptoms force a spiritual reckoning. Is it possible for the Buddhist CEO to face these challenges and stay true to his core values and beliefs?

Should I get my Husband a Gift for Valentine’s Day?

Next week is Valentine’s Day, and I have decided that I want to celebrate the occasion. It will be a first in a very long time for my husband and me. But  now I have a dilemma. What can I get my husband for Valentine’s Day, and should I even bother to get him a gift if he doesn’t want to celebrate?

Join the conversation in my blog post, share your thoughts on whether we should celebrate Valentine’s Day over a decade into our marriage, and offer your suggestions on how to make it a memorable event.

Valentine’s Day: To Gift or Not to Gift? Join the conversation.

Should I get my Husband a Gift for Valentine’s Day?

This year I have decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day with my husband. He is not happy about my announcement. We have been married for nearly fourteen years, together for over twenty years, and decided several years ago that we wouldn’t bother with Valentine’s Day because it was “just another day.” But that’s the point. I think it is nice to have something to plan for, something to get excited about, something to take the mundanity out of everyday life and brighten up an otherwise dull week.

I don’t expect an extravagant gift or a special treat. It is just another work and school day for our family. But I would at least like the opportunity to spend time with my husband as a couple without needing to run the children to and from clubs, or get some shopping specifically for the house, or do a specific job relating to our family obligations. We need time for us to be alone, to be romantic, to be properly together. I just don’t know when that will happen. But I still want to get him a little gift, although I have no idea what that might be. At this rate it will probably be a packet of sweets, but hey, it’s the thought that counts, right? He loves his Haribo.

Valentine’s Day gift for your spouse

If you are struggling to choose a gift for your spouse this Valentine’s Day, check out my suggestions. I’m hoping to give myself some inspiration at the same time. Here’s to a romantic Valentine’s Day celebration (I hope)!

We can celebrate Valentine’s Day

That gave me a few ideas! My husband does enjoy his music and is still fond of CDs, so maybe I can add another to his collection. Or maybe I can look for something a bit different that I can’t discuss in a public place… Enjoy your Valentine’s Day celebrations, whatever they look like.

My Review of  “Ghosts, Monsters, and Demons of India” by Rakesh Khanna and J. Furcifer Bhairav

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review, and I will admit that I got excited when it landed at my door. The book is a tactile beauty with a gorgeous hardback cover and some grisly, gruesome, Gothic illustrations alongside the monster stories. I felt like one of the Winchester brothers or maybe a Grimm character, researching lore and learning about monsters, their origins, their habits, and where to find them. It was a perfect October read and very atmospheric on Halloween. I recommend this book for every monster hunter out there, every Supernatural fan, and anyone that appreciates traditional gruesome folklore.

About the Book

An illustrated guide to the folktales and real-life stories of the ghosts, monsters and demons of India, a culture famously rich in tradition and legends. Perfect for fans of Eli Roth’s Urban Legends and Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.

“I was not prepared for how deeply this book captivated me … Ghosts, Monsters, and Demons of India is exemplary of what a book can be, how it can operate. It’s a bridge across space, time, and language” —Robin Sloan, author of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore.

An encyclopaedia of evil entities and folkloric fiends from across India, from Ladakh to Kerala, Lakshadweep to Nagaland, Naraka to Tuchenkwaka, complete with 60 spooky illustrations. Inside this book you will find …Killer robots built with stolen Roman engineering technology that once guarded the relics of the Buddha. The ghost of a 21-year-old motorcyclist whose Enfield Bullet is venerated at a highway temple in Rajasthan. A Himalayan drum-playing spirit-teacher whose wife is a fearsome Yeti. Diabolical entities conjured into existence by the simultaneous deaths of seven tigers. Triple-rooted night-flying Vedic necromancers. Call-centre employees from beyond the grave. The dreaded Ngalei Ahmaw of Maraland, whose victims’ heads detach themselves from their bodies at night and go wandering in search of blood … AND MORE

#BookReview: “Healthy Models for Relationships” by Barbara Berger

My Review of  “Healthy Models for Relationships” by Barbara Berger

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review. This is a useful book for anyone who is conscious of the impact of words. I consider myself fairly well educated in how to speak to people, and I learned a lot from reading this book. The author explains basic psychology in a way that I can easily understand, she sets out examples of what she is talking about, and she left me thinking about how I respond to people and how I can improve my attitude for both personal advancement and to help other people. I recommend this book!

About the Book

What do healthy relationships look like? Most of the difficulties we face on a daily basis have to do with our relationships – be it with our partners, families, children, parents – or with our friends, neighbors or colleagues at work. This is why most of us really want to know how we can best get along with other people.

What do healthy couple relationships look like? What do healthy families look like? What are the characteristics of respectful, constructive conversations? How can we best navigate through the challenges we meet in our daily lives and disagree with our friends, colleagues and families in a respectful way without running away or going on the attack? Is it possible to speak respectfully and reach compromises which function for everyone involved? In short, what do healthy relationships look like?

Barbara Berger’s answer to these important questions are her Healthy Models which describe what healthy relationships look like in practice. The value of these Healthy Models is that when we have clear models of how healthy behavior looks, we can then compare our own relationships to these models and identify what is not working in our relationships. And this can be a big help because then we can begin to work to improve our relationships. The book is packed with practical techniques and exercises.

Embracing the Light: Imbolc Celebrations in the UK

Welcome to another enchanting #WitchyWednesday on SpookyMrsGreen.com! As we transition from the dark depths of winter to the promise of spring, we find ourselves celebrating Imbolc, a festival that marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

Imbolc, also known as Brigid’s Day, is a time to honour the goddess Brigid and welcome the first signs of spring.

Beautiful image of a tree standing in a field, transitioning from Winter to Spring. One side of the tree is bare and there is snow on the ground. One side of the tree is blooming with bright green leaves and the grass is green and vibrant in the field. Text reads, “Imbolc Blessings.” SpookyMrsGreen mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Imbolc Blessings, my pagan friends!

Imbolc in the UK

In the United Kingdom, Imbolc is celebrated with a blend of ancient Celtic traditions and modern pagan practices. As the earth begins to stir from its winter slumber, there is a palpable sense of anticipation for the warmer days ahead. Let’s explore how this magical festival is observed across the UK.

Brigid, the Hearth Goddess

Imbolc is strongly associated with Brigid, the Celtic goddess of fire, poetry, healing, and smithcraft. In the UK, many practitioners create a sacred space dedicated to Brigid at their hearth or altar. Offerings of grains, seeds, and candles are made, symbolizing the return of light and the fertility of the land.

Lighting the Fires

One of the most iconic traditions during Imbolc is the lighting of fires. In ancient times, communities would gather around bonfires to invoke the sun’s energy and purify the land. In the UK, you might find modern celebrants lighting candles or small bonfires, symbolizing the increasing power of the sun and its warmth returning to the earth.

Brigid’s Crosses

Crafting Brigid’s crosses is a popular Imbolc activity in the UK. These symbolic crosses are woven from straw or rushes and are believed to bring protection and blessings to the home. Many families and covens create these crosses together, infusing them with intentions for the coming season.

Spring Cleaning and Purification

Imbolc is a time for clearing away the stagnant energy of winter and making space for the vitality of spring. In the UK, this often translates into a thorough spring cleaning of homes and ritual spaces. Cleansing tools such as sage or juniper are used to purify the energy, preparing the space for the new growth that Imbolc heralds.

Planting Seeds of Intention

Just as farmers begin to prepare their fields for planting, witches and pagans in the UK take this time to plant seeds of intention for the year ahead. Whether it’s personal goals, creative projects, or spiritual aspirations, Imbolc is a potent time to set intentions and nurture them as they grow.

Imbolc Blessings!

As Imbolc arrives in the UK, we embrace the subtle shift from winter’s chill to the gentle embrace of spring. By honouring the goddess Brigid, lighting fires, and engaging in meaningful rituals, we welcome the returning light and the promise of renewal. May your Imbolc be filled with warmth, creativity, and the joyous anticipation of the season to come. Blessed be!

My Review of  “The Shadow of the Wind” by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

This is a book that I suggested for our local book club, and I was excited to read it. The blurb describes a “cemetery of forgotten books” and that instantly captures my attention and my imagination. I didn’t relate to the characters particularly but that might be because they are men, and the story is set in 20th century Spain which is not something I am familiar with. The story gave me an interesting history lesson about subjects that I would not ordinarily explore, so I am glad that I read the book for that reason. I also enjoyed the descriptions of architecture in Barcelona, especially the Gothic undertones. While the book didn’t quite live up to my expectations, I did enjoy it, and I do recommend that you read it.

About the Book

Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the ‘Cemetery of Lost Books’, a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles that have long gone out of print. To this library, a man brings his 10-year-old son Daniel one cold morning in 1945. Daniel is allowed to choose one book from the shelves and pulls out ‘The Shadow of the Wind’ by Julian Carax.

But as he grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find.

Then, one night, as he is wandering the old streets once more, Daniel is approached by a figure who reminds him of a character from the book, a character who turns out to be the devil. This man is tracking down every last copy of Carax’s work in order to burn them.

What begins as a case of literary curiosity turns into a race to find out the truth behind the life and death of Julian Carax and to save those he left behind…

A Guide to Raising Money-Savvy Kids at SpookyMrsGreen.com

The Digital Evolution of Financial Education

In today’s fast-paced world, the old-fashioned money jar has morphed into a digital playground of financial tools. As parents, it’s crucial to guide our children through the ever-evolving landscape of online banking, investing, and even the emergence of cryptocurrencies.

1. Digital Savings Accounts

Introduce your kids to the world of online savings accounts, such as apps like Moneybox. These platforms offer user-friendly interfaces and can be a fantastic way to teach your children about the basics of saving money in the digital era. Watch their excitement as they see their savings grow right on their screens.

2. The ABCs of Investing

Demystify the world of investing by explaining the concept of stocks and shares in a simple manner. Use relatable examples and, if you’re comfortable, involve your children in the process by letting them help choose a stock or share to invest in. This hands-on experience can be both educational and fun.

3. Cryptocurrency Exploration

As cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum become more mainstream, it’s essential to educate your kids about this alternative financial tool. Explain the basics of how cryptocurrencies work, their potential benefits, and the risks involved. Consider starting with a small investment in a kid-friendly cryptocurrency platform to make the learning process engaging.

4. Digital Budgeting Apps

Teach your children the art of budgeting with the help of digital budgeting apps. Apps like YNAB (You Need A Budget) or PocketGuard can provide a hands-on experience in managing expenses and setting financial goals. Make it a family activity to track spending and saving together.

5. Virtual Investment Simulators

Introduce your children to investment simulators or games that allow them to practice investing without real money. This virtual experience can build their confidence and understanding before they venture into actual investments.

As parents navigating the crypt of financial wisdom, let’s equip our kids with the tools to succeed in the digital age. Happy #MummyMonday, and may your financial ventures be as prosperous as your children’s futures! 💻💰

“Children’s Unexplained Experiences in a Post Materialist World: What Children Can Teach Us about the Mystery of Being Human” by Donna Maria Thomas

My Review of  “Children’s Unexplained Experiences in a Post Materialist World” by Donna Maria Thomas

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review. This book talks about how children experience the world and how we as adults should encourage them to express their experiences. I wish this had been around when I was a child. Having grown up being told that it is “just my imagination,” that what I saw wasn’t real, and that I had a vivid imagination, but I should focus on the real world, it is good to know that some adults do believe what children say (within reason).

I like to think that my own children are growing up with more confidence to describe their experiences and express how they feel about those experiences, and I found this book informative, interesting, and easy to read. The author is an academic and researcher who has taken time to thoroughly investigate her subject matter. She explored children that have psychic experiences, children that have near death experiences, and those that see the world differently, and she wrote about them clearly and concisely.

About the Book

Historically, children’s inexplicable experiences — from telepathy and conversing with deceased relatives to out-of-body or near-death experiences, and more — have been theorised through traditional scientific lenses that may not have the explanatory power to account for such experiences. In “Children’s Unexplained Experiences in a Post Materialist World,” Donna Thomas shares research that she and other scholars, past and present, have conducted with children and young people across the world.

By placing children’s unexplained experiences and views about reality in the contexts of culture, consciousness and the nature of self, this book offers a middleway for explaining these childhood experiences within post-materialist science and philosophy. Thomas suggests that children’s experiences could greatly contribute to a new paradigm for understanding the mystery of being human and the nature of reality.
