Merry Bookmas: My December Reading Stack 🎄📖

There is something deeply comforting about December. The darker evenings invite us to slow down, light a candle, wrap ourselves in blankets, and finally give in to the ever-growing pile of books that have been patiently waiting for their moment. And yes… my favourite subject has returned to the blog today: books.

It’s been a little while since I last shared a bookish post here on SpookyMrsGreen, but as the year winds down, it felt like the perfect time to revisit my reading life and share what’s currently filling my shelves, bedside table, and Kindle. Consider this my festive confession: I have a lot to read… and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Merry Bookmas: My December Reading Stack 🎄📖

What I’m Reading Right Now

At the moment, I’m immersed in Paper Trail by Lyndon Haynes, a gripping read that has quickly become my companion during stolen moments of quiet. It’s one of those books that lingers in the back of your mind when you’re away from it, which is always a good sign.

Meanwhile, my Kindle is quietly judging me from the side-lines, already queued with some powerful non-fiction. Next up are:

  • After the Injection: A Memoir of Survival and Resistance by Angeline Moyo
  • He Said He’s Sorry: Carving Through Insanity by Wayne Warrender

Both are intense, reflective reads that I know will require emotional space and time – the kind of books that make you pause, breathe, and process. December feels like the right moment for that kind of reading too.

Charity Shop Temptations (Because I Have No Self-Control)

Of course, no reading list would be complete without a few impulse buys… especially when charity shops are involved. I mean, I needed them, right?

One book I absolutely could not leave behind was Death Trap by Alexandra St Pierre. This dark bully paranormal romance comes with trigger warnings and a bold aesthetic that BookTok readers will instantly recognise and adore. The design alone is stunning – the kind of book that begs to be photographed, styled, and featured in reels and videos. I already know this one will be making an appearance on my social feeds, and I cannot wait to dive in.

I also added a couple of intriguing true crime titles to my collection:

  • Blood on the Tracks: A History of Railway Crime in Britain by David Brandon and Alan Brooke – a fascinatingly niche subject that immediately caught my attention.
  • The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold – a truly beautiful hardback edition that now sits proudly on my Gothic bookshelf. It feels like a book to be read slowly and respectfully, and it looks utterly perfect alongside my darker titles.

Whether you’re gifting a loved one, topping up your own reading pile, or simply enjoying the ritual of browsing books online with a cup of tea, it’s well worth a look.

Final Thoughts

December reading doesn’t need to be productive or goal-driven. Sometimes it’s about mood, curiosity, and indulgence – following your instincts down dark Gothic paths, into unsettling truths, or towards beautifully designed covers you just had to bring home.

My shelves may already be overflowing, but my heart is full.
Here’s to Merry Bookmas, cosy reading days, and stories waiting to be discovered. 🎄📚

Free for all Friday: Winter Wellness & Spooky Season Survival

The festive season has officially arrived, and wow—has it landed with a thud! The past couple of weeks in my retail job have been full-on, with our store transforming into a winter wonderland almost overnight. Christmas stock is flying out, the decorations are up, and the energy is wonderfully frantic… but my body is starting to tell me I’ve been pushing a little too hard.

To top it off, my daughter was off school poorly earlier this week, and I’ve been serving customers non-stop on the shop floor, handling cash, stock, baskets, trolleys… all of which I now realise could be carrying every winter germ known to mankind. Classic spooky mum life: monsters? No problem. Viruses? Terrifying!

So here I am, warming my hands around a mug of something herbal, acknowledging that yes—it’s time to prepare for winter viruses before they prepare themselves for me.

Taking Care of Ourselves This Season

As parents, as carers, as workers—and for many of us, as witches and magical beings navigating these darker months—we tend to put ourselves last. But winter asks something different from us. It invites us to slow down, to nourish, to protect our energy, to stay warm and well.

My plan for this weekend?
Rest. Hot tea. Gentle stretches. A cosy blanket. Maybe a touch of spell work for wellness and protection. And definitely a look at what I can stock in my winter wellness kit before the next wave of sniffles tries to take me down.

If you’re feeling the same, know you’re not alone. Let’s enter December as strong, healthy, magical beings—ready to embrace every twinkle of festive light and every shadowy winter night.

The December Supermoon over Cheshire: A Night of Clarity, Magic, and Moonlit Whispers

This Thursday, we will witness the final supermoon of the year — a powerful Cold Moon in Gemini glowing bright over our sleepy Cheshire landscape. And let me tell you, this one feels special. The Moon reaches her peak fullness at 23:14 UK time, but the magic begins long before that moment. By mid-afternoon she will rise over our horizon, swelling golden and heavy as she climbs into the dusk sky.

Here in Cheshire, we’re blessed with wide horizons and open sky. If you’ve ever stood on the canal path in Middlewich, or wandered along Nantwich Lake at twilight, you’ll know exactly how the light settles on the water. A supermoon amplifies that feeling tenfold. It’s a reminder that the year is coming to a close, and with it comes a rare moment of clarity — a breath before the deep winter stillness.

Spooky occult dark magic image December full moon magick supermoon magic. Witchy Wednesday pagan family pagan mom at SpookyMrsGreen.com spooky family lifestyle blog.
The December Supermoon over Cheshire: A Night of Clarity, Magic, and Moonlit Whispers

Why This Moon Matters

This full moon is in Gemini, the sign of communication, curiosity, truth-seeking, and storytelling. As a writer, witch, and ever-curious spirit, I can feel its energy humming already. This is a moon of messages, both spoken and unspoken. A moon that asks us to look at the stories we tell ourselves — and decide which ones we want to carry into 2026.

Coupled with the fact that this is a supermoon (the last of three in a row), the energy feels brighter, louder, and more insistent than usual. Whether you practise Reiki, witchcraft, spiritual healing, or simple mindful reflection, you may find emotions rising to the surface, thoughts feeling sharper, and conversation flowing more easily. Gemini does love a good chat.

A Cheshire Moon with Local Magic

If you’ve walked the lands around Beeston Castle, Alderley Edge, or Bickerton Hill, you’ll know there’s ancient energy woven into our local landscape. Leylines cross, stories linger, and spirits whisper through the trees. A supermoon casts a spectral glow over these places, stirring the old magic beneath our feet.

And yes — I will absolutely be out there with my journal, my crystals, and probably one or two of my haunted dolls soaking up the lunar energy!

Your December Supermoon Ritual

Here’s a simple ritual you can do from home, with or without a direct view of the moon:

Moonlit Story Release Ritual

  1. Light a candle — I recommend deep blue, silver, or white.
  2. Sit comfortably where you can feel the moonlight or imagine it surrounding you.
  3. Open your journal and write:
“What am I ready to release so I can welcome clarity into 2026?”
  4. Let your words flow freely — no editing, no judgement.
  5. When you’re done, send yourself a few minutes of Reiki (hands over the heart or throat work beautifully).
  6. Close your ritual by thanking the Moon, the land, and your own intuition for guiding you.

Tools and Treasures for This Moon

  • Crystals: sodalite, labradorite, clear quartz, blue lace agate
  • Divination tools: tarot decks, pendulums, runes
  • Spirit companions: haunted dolls, spirit boxes, or simple intuitive listening

A Final Thought

This is the perfect moment to pause, reflect, and honour the story of your year — the magic, the challenges, the growth, and the quiet moments in between. Let the Moon illuminate what you’re ready to let go of, and what you are ready to embrace as the wheel turns once more.

I’ll be moon-gazing here in Cheshire on Thursday night, whispering my intentions to the sky and preparing for a fresh year ahead. If you connect with the December supermoon too, I’d love to hear your experiences — share them on SpookyMrsGreen or tag me on Instagram.

Blessings,
Catherine x

Mummy Monday: Holding Ourselves Through the Struggle

Last week, as November drew to a close and the Christmas lights began to twinkle across the high street, I found myself sitting at home with an unexpected wave of anxiety rolling through my body. Normally, my husband and I are paid at different times — he receives his wages on a fixed date each month, while mine arrive every four weeks. But this time, our paydays landed on the same day, leaving us with a long stretch of financial limbo at the end of November.

And oh, how that final week hit hard.

Even now, standing at the start of December with a temporary sense of relief that there is money (finally) sitting in our bank accounts again, I can still feel the echo of those emotions. The reality is that the relief doesn’t last long. The bills are already lining up. The mortgage looms like a shadow. And the cost of simply living right now is exhausting.

Image of a woman experiencing anxiety and stress with a sad face emoji on her sweater. Mummy Monday Holding Ourselves Through the Struggle at SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog.
Mummy Monday: Holding Ourselves Through the Struggle 💚✨

Holding Ourselves Through the Struggle

Last week, the anxiety felt like a physical presence. My chest was tight, my hands were shaky, and I couldn’t understand at first why I felt so on edge. When I took a moment to check in with myself, the truth surfaced:
I was anxious about going food shopping.

Not because of the crowds or the cold, but because I genuinely didn’t know how much I could afford. I needed logs and coal to warm the living room. I needed groceries for the children. And I knew every penny had to come from the last fragile sliver of my overdraft.

My freelance work doesn’t stretch far enough, and my part-time retail job pays minimum wage. I am doing my best, and still it feels like we’re treading water in a rising tide. Our house needs repairs — a leaking front door, worn-out windows that let in more cold than they hold out — but those jobs keep getting pushed aside because survival always comes first.

And I know we are not the only family feeling this way.

Millennial parents across the UK are struggling.

We are trying to raise our children while juggling costs that rise faster than any of us can realistically keep up with — food, utilities, rent or mortgages, school needs, winter essentials. We want to give our children a future, yet half the time we can barely afford the present.

Today, on this first Mummy Monday of December, I want to hold space for that truth.
To acknowledge the fear, the weight, the exhaustion — and to recognise the strength it takes to keep going anyway.

If you have felt this financial pressure, the anxiety, the dread of simply checking your bank balance, please know this:

You are not alone. You are not failing. You are surviving something extremely hard.

From my Reiki heart to yours, I’m sending a gentle wave of warmth and grounding energy to anyone who needs it today. May it soften the tightness in your chest, ease the worry in your mind, and remind you that you are seen, valued, and supported.

If you want to share your experience — even just a sentence — please do so in the comments. This is a safe space. Let’s lift each other up as we move through December together, with honesty, compassion, and community.

You’re doing your best. And your best is enough.

With love, warmth, and Reiki energy,
Catherine

Witchy Wednesday: Should We Fear the Ouija Board — or Simply Respect It?

This week’s Witchy Wednesday topic bubbled up from a perfectly ordinary chat at work… the kind that suddenly takes a paranormal detour and reminds me why I love being me.

A colleague told me his ten-year-old daughter had been to a friend’s birthday sleepover. You know the sort: pizza, giggles, fluffy blankets — and apparently, a homemade Ouija board drawn on a sheet of paper.

Spooky image of a wooden Ouija Board spirit board spirit communication séance ghost hunting. Text reads, “Should We Fear the Ouija Board — or Simply Respect It?” Witchy Wednesday pagan family pagan mom at SpookyMrsGreen.com spooky family lifestyle blog.
Witchy Wednesday: Should We Fear the Ouija Board — or Simply Respect It?

Yes. The girls held a séance.

According to him, they “got results.” Now, whether that was spirit communication or the overactive imagination of excitable children fuelled by sugar and birthday cake, we may never know. But the twist came when one of the supervising adults — a notorious family prankster — decided to enhance the atmosphere by playing ghostly sounds from speakers outside the bedroom door.

Cue shrieks, hysteria, and mild parental panic.

While I personally find this hilarious (and would probably have done the same when my own girls were younger, but don’t tell them), my colleague was a little unsettled. He wondered whether “anything might have crept out of the void,” and whether his daughter was spiritually safe. I reassured him that he needn’t worry — but the conversation stayed with me.

Because once again, the humble Ouija board had stepped into the spotlight as a misunderstood, much-maligned tool of divination.

So today, let’s explore its history, uncover why it has such a frightening reputation, and remind ourselves that when used respectfully, it is just another doorway to the unseen.

A Brief — and Surprisingly Ordinary — History of the Ouija Board

Many people assume the Ouija board has ancient, occult origins… a sinister artefact passed down by witches and mediums from the dawn of time.

In truth, the modern Ouija board was invented in 1890 as a parlour game.

Yes, really.

The Spiritualist movement was booming, and people were fascinated with communicating with their loved ones who had passed. Entrepreneurs saw an opportunity, packaged the idea into a wooden board with letters, numbers, and a planchette — and sold it as wholesome family entertainment. It wasn’t considered dangerous. It wasn’t banned. It wasn’t whispered about in fear.

It was sold in toy shops, the same way we buy Monopoly or Scrabble today.

The “dark reputation” didn’t arrive until much later.

So How Did It Become the Tool of Horror Films?

Over the decades, the Western world’s cultural relationship with death and the supernatural shifted. Spiritualism faded. Fear-based storytelling grew. Hollywood stepped in to turn this simple communication tool into a portal for demons, possessions, and worst-case scenarios.

Then came The Exorcist (1973).

One teenage girl, a Ouija board, and suddenly mass panic. Overnight, the board went from quirky curiosity to the Devil’s hotline.

Never mind the decades of safe, uneventful use before that. The film cemented the board’s reputation in popular culture, and we’ve been undoing that knot ever since.

My Own Take — Respect, Curiosity, and a Dash of Common Sense

I’ve always been fascinated by Ouija boards. I don’t fear them. I don’t worship them. I see them as a tool, just like tarot cards, runes, or a pendulum.

I’ve taught my daughters how to use one responsibly:

  • Set your intention
  • Be respectful
  • Protect your energy
  • Stay grounded
  • Close the session properly

It’s not about inviting chaos — it’s about understanding the energetic nature of communication. Children at a sleepover almost certainly aren’t channelling ancient malevolent beings. More likely:

  • Their subconscious minds are doing the work
  • Their imaginations are running wild
  • The prankster outside the door is stirring the pot

(Honestly, I would’ve loved to have seen that scene unfold!)

But the conversation with my colleague highlighted something important:

Even in 2025, our culture still treats the Ouija board as taboo.

So Should You Be Worried If Your Child Tries One?

Generally… no.

Children experiment. They explore. They test boundaries. The homemade paper Ouija board has long been a rite of passage at sleepovers. While I always encourage respect when interacting with anything spiritual, I don’t believe a group of giggling ten-year-olds with a biro and a sheet of A4 are going to tear open the veil.

If anything, it’s an opportunity:

  • Teach them healthy curiosity
  • Teach them grounding and protection
  • Teach them that the paranormal is not something to fear — but something to approach responsibly

We do more harm by letting fear shape the narrative.

Final Thoughts: The Spirit World Isn’t the Monster — Our Own Stories Are

The Ouija board is only as powerful as the intention behind it.

The real danger comes from:

  • Fear
  • Misunderstanding
  • Media sensationalism
  • Adults with hidden speakers and a flair for theatrics

For me, Witchy Wednesday is all about shining a light on the unseen with honesty and curiosity. So if you or someone you know has questions about divination tools, intuition, or spiritual communication, remember:

Respect is key. Fear is optional. Curiosity is essential.

And ghostly sound effects should probably come with a warning label.

Witchy Wednesday: When a Reiki Retreat Turns into a Ghostly Adventure

There’s something about North Wales that always stirs my witchy senses. Maybe it’s the ancient landscape, or the way history clings to every stone wall and shadowed copse of trees. Or maybe it’s just me, forever slipping between Reiki Master and ghost hunter depending on which way the wind blows.

Either way, as soon as I turned off the main road and approached our retreat venue, that familiar tingle crept up my spine… and I knew the spirits were waiting.

Witchy Wednesday: When a Reiki Retreat Turns into a Ghostly Adventure

When a Reiki Retreat Turns into a Ghostly Adventure

I was there for a peaceful weekend of healing energy with my lovely Reiki ladies—time to breathe, connect, meditate, and rest. But the house was only a short drive from Bodelwyddan Castle, where I had one of the most intense paranormal investigations of my life nearly twenty years ago. That whole region is steeped in memory for me: old manor houses, wooded lanes, and locations where I’ve stood in the dark with EMF meters and shivers of anticipation. So perhaps it’s no surprise that the moment I stepped out of the car, something shifted. I felt… home.

Haunted Before We Even Unpacked

The retreat house itself was a former nursing home, still very much looking the part—with wide corridors, locked doors from old staff rooms, and an abandoned Nurse’s office at the end of the first-floor hallway that did absolutely nothing to calm anyone’s imagination. Half the building was closed off and sublet to another business, so although we could hear movement behind interior doors, we never actually saw who (or what) was there.

One of my Reiki friends is terrified of ghosts (which always amuses me because she signed up for a retreat with me of all people!). She was decidedly unimpressed when the energy of the place made itself known before we even settled in. Me? I was delighted. Of course.

We discovered very quickly that the building was most definitely haunted—though not in a threatening or heavy way. More like layers of former residents, family members, nurses, and servants who simply… never left. And why should they? It was their home long before it became ours for the weekend.

Spirit Fingers, Gentle Tickles & Circle Work Energy

During meditations and circle work, several of us felt ghostly touches—little flicks, tickles, and brushes along our arms, legs, or shoulders. Not intrusive, not cold, just curious. A warm, playful energy circled the group whenever we connected deeply.

One presence in particular stands out: a little girl.

I sensed her during one of our standing self-care meditations. She felt about two or three years old, early 1900s perhaps—sweet, quiet, and shy at first. Then she reached for my hand. The energy was so gentle and so childlike that I instinctively shifted into “mum mode,” letting her nestle close if that made her feel safe.

After a while she skipped away, drifting across the room to one of the other ladies. We didn’t speak about it openly at first, but later several of us confessed to feeling a small hand or a light touch. That confirmed it for me: she was there, and she was comfortable with us.

The Upstairs… A Very Different Vibe

While my room on the ground floor was peaceful (and I had the deepest sleep I’ve had in months!), the first-floor bedrooms told a different story. Some of the ladies struggled to rest, feeling watched or unsettled—not frightened exactly, but restless.

The energy upstairs was heavier, more stagnant, almost like the building remembered routines, footsteps, and midnight rounds. The abandoned Nurse’s office didn’t help. And the locked interior doors leading to the sublet rooms created a sense of unseen presence just out of reach.

We suspect there may be a live-in caretaker somewhere on site. Or I may have seen a ghost through the window. Honestly, it could have gone either way.

A Retreat with a Paranormal Twist

Now, our Reiki teacher has firmly announced that we will not be returning to this venue (and after the first-floor experiences, the group wholeheartedly agrees!). It simply wasn’t suitable for the kind of retreat we intended. It looked beautiful online—one of those holiday-home listings that promises a warm, modern escape. In reality, it felt like we had stepped back in time, into a space still humming with old energy and memories.

But for me? It felt like the perfect blend of peaceful Reiki practice and paranormal adventure. I loved the soft whispers of the past, the playful spirit child, and the sense that we were being warmly observed by former residents who were delighted to have visitors again.

This Witchy Wednesday, I honour that experience—the blending of light and shadow, healing and haunting, past and present. Sometimes the most magical energy finds us in the most unexpected places.

And of course, the witch in me is already plotting a return to Bodelwyddan Castle…
