Mummy Monday: Fangs, Fur and Fabulous – It’s Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈🐺🧛‍♀️

Hello, my spooky friends, and Happy Pride Month!

Here at SpookyMrsGreen HQ, we’re flying the rainbow flag high and proud – not just in celebration of my wonderful bisexual husband and our amazing bisexual daughter, but for all the glorious colours of the LGBTQ+ spectrum that shine so brightly in our home and in my books. 🌈

Mummy Monday: Fangs, Fur and Fabulous – It’s Pride Month!

Fangs, Fur and Fabulous

As a paranormal romance author, I’ve always believed that love is love – whether it’s between humans, vampires, werewolves, or the occasional ghost or witch. My characters don’t fit neatly into boxes, and neither do the people I love. That’s what makes life – and fiction – so deliciously unpredictable.

Let’s talk about Danny Mason. Our alpha werewolf. Brooding. Fierce. Loyal. Very, very conflicted. Because while he’s devoted to his lieutenant Simon Bunce – a man who has stood beside him through blood, battles, and betrayal – he’s also hopelessly in love with Jessica, his brother’s human girlfriend. Yes, that brother. Jack Mason. The vampire. You can see how this might cause just a tiny bit of tension in the pack… 😬

Danny and Simon’s bond runs deep, forged in a lifetime of service and unspoken desire. Their relationship is layered with tenderness and loyalty, a slow-burning love that simmers beneath the surface even as Danny’s heart pulls him in a different direction. And then Jessica arrives – bold, beautiful, completely unaware that she’s walking into the middle of a supernatural soap opera. The resulting chaos is intense, emotional, and, well, a little bit sexy.

Forbidden Lesbian Love

And let’s not forget Vampire of Blackpool, where things get even more complicated.

Here we meet Meredith Hanson, an ancient vampire with a tragic past and a tendency to leave a trail of bodies behind her when things get a little stressful. Enter Samantha Morris – a young witch with fire in her heart and magic in her veins. Their connection is instant, electric, and utterly forbidden. Vampires and witches don’t typically fall in love, let alone her kind of love. But Meredith and Samantha break the rules, because their love is stronger than fear, tradition, or vampire hunters stalking them in the shadows.

Love is Love

I write these stories because I want my daughters – and all readers – to see that love can bloom in the most unlikely places. That it’s okay to love differently. That the world is more magical when we embrace diversity, not hide from it. And yes, sometimes love is messy, chaotic, and even deadly when you’re a werewolf or a vampire, but isn’t that part of the fun?

So this Pride Month, I raise a glass of virtual vampire wine to all my readers – whether you’re human, fanged, furred, or fabulously magical. Let’s celebrate love in all its forms, and remember that the world (and the supernatural realm) is a much better place when we let everyone be their true, brilliant, beautiful selves.

With love, light, and just a hint of bloodlust,
Catherine xx

Witchy Wednesday: Harnessing New Moon Energy and Reiki for Radical Change

There is something quite magical about the New Moon, isn’t there? A hush falls across the sky, a sense of calm descends, and for a brief moment, we are gifted a cosmic blank slate.

This past week, I have truly felt the power of this lunar reset, and it’s sparked something within me—something bold, spontaneous, and just a little bit wild.

Harnessing New Moon Energy and Reiki for Radical Change

I’ve often spoken about my Reiki journey here on the blog, but today I want to share something deeply personal and incredibly empowering. Over the weekend, in a flurry of determination and energy, I did something I’ve been dreaming about for years—I booked a holiday abroad for myself and my children.

It might sound simple, even routine to some. But believe me, it was anything but. The financial hurdles, the emotional stress, the sheer logistics of planning a family trip as a solo parent—it all felt impossible for the longest time. And yet, in the aftermath of the New Moon, with my soul buzzing and my energy field positively glowing, I just did it. There was no fear. No hesitation. Just a deep, intuitive knowing that now was the time.

So how did this happen?

The answer, I believe, lies in the power of my Reiki self-care practice. Reiki isn’t just a healing tool. It’s not only for soothing physical aches or quieting the mind (although it does both beautifully). For me, Reiki is the spark that ignites my courage. It is the sacred discipline that keeps me grounded while allowing me to expand. It has become the secret ingredient behind every leap I take in life.

When I tune in and give myself Reiki—even just a few minutes a day—I reconnect with my deepest intentions. I calm the chaos of everyday life and allow space for clarity. And from that space, miracles start to flow. Booking a spontaneous holiday might seem unrelated to spiritual practice, but I know in my bones that this joyful decision was born from the energy I’ve been nurturing through Reiki.

Right now, I feel powerful. And not in a boastful, “I’ve got it all figured out” way. No—this is a softer, deeper power. The kind that says, “You’ve got this. You’re ready.” I feel more in alignment with my purpose, more connected to my children, and more open to whatever the Universe has in store.

And that brings me to my next manifestation: career transformation.

Just as I manifested our summer escape, I am now calling in better job prospects, more aligned opportunities, and the freedom to express my full potential through meaningful work. Yes, I’m sending out my CV. Yes, I’m applying in all the usual places. But I’m also doing something far more potent: I’m holding the vision. I’m doing the Reiki. I’m trusting the process.

Because here’s the truth—when you combine action with energetic alignment, you accelerate your journey. Reiki gives me the tools to stay balanced as I leap toward the unknown. It teaches me to trust my intuition, listen to my body, and honour my emotional needs. And I know that the more I care for my energy, the more magnetic I become to the life I desire.

If you’ve never tried Reiki before, I invite you to explore it. Start with curiosity. Set an intention. And let yourself feel what happens. You don’t need any experience or fancy equipment—just an open heart and a willingness to slow down and listen.

To help you begin, I’ve created some Reiki videos on my YouTube channel @SpookyMrsGreen, where I guide distance healing sessions and share insights from my own spiritual journey. These videos are designed for anyone, whether you’re brand new to energy work or simply seeking a moment of peace in your busy day.

Let this be your sign.

Whatever you’re dreaming of—whether it’s a new adventure, a new job, a new way of life—it’s not as far out of reach as it might seem. Start with energy. Start with intention. Use Reiki to help you reconnect with your truth. And then, when the inspiration strikes—leap.

Because sometimes, all it takes is one spontaneous decision to change everything.

🌑 Mummy Monday: Embracing the May New Moon in Gemini 🌬✨

It’s Mummy Monday again, and this week I’m pausing for a moment of cosmic reflection beneath the dark sky of the New Moon in Gemini, which arrives on Monday, 26th May 2025.

Now, let’s be honest — as busy mums, we don’t always have the luxury of long moon rituals or uninterrupted meditation. But the energy of the moon is always with us, and this one in particular offers a little gift that we can use in our everyday lives. Whether you’re navigating the school run, managing work deadlines, or negotiating peace treaties between siblings, the Gemini New Moon has something to teach us all.

🌑 Mummy Monday: Embracing the May New Moon in Gemini 🌬✨

🌚 What Does This New Moon Mean?

Gemini is an air sign ruled by Mercury, planet of communication, thought, and travel. This New Moon whispers, “Speak your truth. Think with clarity. Be curious.” It’s about starting a new cycle that invites us to embrace fresh ideas, learn something new, and perhaps talk about things we’ve been avoiding. Think of it as a reset button for your mind — especially helpful when life feels overwhelming or scattered.

If you’ve been feeling foggy or stuck in old patterns, now is the time to journal, plan, or have those honest chats — with yourself, your partner, or your children. Gemini energy is light, quick, and playful. Use it to reconnect with your inner spark, especially if you’ve been in ‘mum survival mode’ for too long.

🪶 Here’s What We Can Learn:

  • Communication is key – Whether it’s your toddler’s tantrums or a teen’s attitude, this moon encourages open, curious conversations without judgement.
  • Be flexible – Life doesn’t go to plan (especially with kids!). Gemini helps us loosen up, adapt, and even laugh at the chaos.
  • Make time for learning – Is there a book you’ve been meaning to read? A course you’d love to try? This is your nudge to start.
  • Reconnect socially – Arrange a playdate, call a friend, or just say hello to the mum you always see at the school gate.
  • Creative writing or journaling – Gemini thrives on self-expression. Even ten minutes before bed with your notebook can make a difference.

✨ New Moon Magic for Every Mummy

You don’t have to stay up all night or light a hundred candles (unless you want to!). Here’s a simple ritual you can do:

🖊 Grab a notebook and write down three intentions for the next month. Keep them simple and realistic.

💬 Speak them aloud – to yourself, the universe, or the cat!

🕯 Light a candle (if it’s safe to do so!) and take a few deep breaths. Imagine your intentions taking flight on the air.

🎧 Listen to a guided meditation or moon playlist while folding laundry or having a cuppa. Let that Gemini magic infuse your day.

💫 Mummy Moon Horoscopes – Quick & Spooky Style

A few bite-sized snippets just for fun – take what resonates, leave the rest!

  • Aries Mums – Speak up! Your voice matters at home and beyond.
  • Taurus Mums – A money idea or family budget tweak could save your sanity.
  • Gemini Mums – This is your moon! Let your vibrant self shine.
  • Cancer Mums – Rest and dream. You’re allowed to pause.
  • Leo Mums – Connect with your tribe. A mum-friend chat could lift your spirits.
  • Virgo Mums – Step into the spotlight! You’ve got ideas worth sharing.
  • Libra Mums – Book that weekend away (or at least daydream about it).
  • Scorpio Mums – Let go of emotional clutter. It’s time to lighten the load.
  • Sagittarius Mums – Relationships matter. Talk it out.
  • Capricorn Mums – Reset your routine – and remember you matter too.
  • Aquarius Mums – Be playful. Your creativity needs attention.
  • Pisces Mums – Make your home your sanctuary. Small changes, big impact.

This New Moon is here to remind us that we are not just mothers, partners, or workers – we are wise, curious, ever-evolving beings. We deserve the space to dream, to grow, and to start again. So, as the moon disappears from view tonight, I invite you to take a moment for yourself and whisper those intentions into the stillness.

We are magic, even when we’re knackered. 🌙💖

Witchy Wednesday: Ghosts, Chaos and Cold Cells at Shrewsbury Prison

A few weeks ago, we did something a little different. We took part in a junior ghost hunt at the infamous Shrewsbury Prison, deep in the heart of Shropshire. The building is rich with history and shadowed by dark tales of imprisonment, punishment, and paranormal activity.

It was the perfect setting for a spooky family adventure… or so we hoped.

Witchy Wednesday: Ghosts, Chaos and Cold Cells at Shrewsbury Prison

Ghosts, Chaos and Cold Cells at Shrewsbury Prison

This event was hosted by a well-known paranormal group and aimed at families with children, which sounded ideal for us. My daughters have grown up hearing about mummy’s ghost hunts, haunted dolls, and spirit talker sessions, so they were ready to experience it for themselves. But the reality, as often happens in witchy and worldly matters, didn’t quite match our expectations.

The prison was packed with other families — excited children, curious parents, and a lot of stomping feet echoing down the stone corridors. We had our EMF meter, dowsing rods, and the Spirit Talker app ready to go, but the energy was just too loud. Quite literally. The sheer volume of people made it difficult to connect with the space. My daughters and I did our best to explore and soak up the eerie atmosphere, but proper investigation work was pretty much impossible.

Fleeting Moments of Magic

Even so, there were a few moments of real magic. Standing alone (briefly!) in a cold prison cell, I felt a hush fall over me. The echo of the past pressed in against the walls. For just a second, I could imagine what it must have been like to live out your days in such a place — the silence, the despair, the isolation. That sensation alone was enough to make the whole trip worthwhile.

We also got to sit behind the prison warden’s desk, which delighted the little history nerd inside me. It felt powerful, like we were slipping into the roles of those who once kept order in such a grim, forgotten world. Sadly, I couldn’t stay in that room long, as my younger daughter became uneasy in the complete darkness — something I fully respect. Ghost hunting is not for everyone, and I admire her for recognising her limits.

In contrast, my older daughter loved it. She is already asking when we can go again and where our next investigation will be. It warms my heart to see her light up with curiosity and courage — a little witchy spark of her own glowing bright in the shadows.

A Spooky Experience

While the night didn’t deliver much in terms of spirit activity, it was still an experience. One that reminded me that ghost hunting isn’t always about the ghosts. Sometimes it’s about the people you’re with, the way the past brushes against the present, and the thrill of stepping into a forgotten world, even if just for a moment.

We likely won’t do another event with this particular company — it was too chaotic, too commercialised for our taste. But that’s all part of the journey, isn’t it? Finding what works for us, learning from each experience, and moving forward with more clarity.

Next time, I think we’ll return to a smaller, more intimate venue with a proper investigation setup. And who knows — maybe then the spirits will be ready to talk.

Until then, we’ll keep listening in the quiet moments, chasing the whispers in the dark… and celebrating every spooky step on the way.

Stay witchy,
Catherine 🖤

Mummy Monday: When Your Book Event Doesn’t Go to Plan (But Still Gives You Something Back)

Last weekend I attended the Leeds Steampunk Market at Calderdale Industrial Museum in Halifax — my first time trading at this particular event and, unfortunately, it didn’t quite go the way I hoped.

Let me be honest: from a business perspective, it was a poor decision on my part. The event had very low footfall, and I didn’t sell many books. I had hoped to meet enthusiastic readers, connect with fans of paranormal romance and urban fantasy, and grow my presence in the steampunk community. But instead, the hall was quiet. The conversations were sparse. And I found myself wondering whether I should have spent my Sunday elsewhere — resting, writing, or catching up on mum-life duties at home.

These things happen. It’s the reality of life as an indie author and entrepreneur. Sometimes we make last-minute decisions in the spirit of adventure, hoping they’ll bring success, only to be met with disappointment. As a working mum, these decisions carry extra weight. I had arranged pet care, packed the car, set up my table… all for a day that didn’t seem to deliver the returns I needed.

Photo of paranormal author Catherine Green at Leeds Steampunk Market in Halifax. SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog. Image of paranormal romance books, urban fantasy books, British vampires and werewolves.
Paranormal author Catherine Green at Leeds Steampunk Market in Halifax.

But here’s the twist: while it didn’t give me the sales or exposure I’d hoped for, it did offer something else.

Because even in a slow event, there’s always a story to tell. And there’s always someone to meet.

Throughout the day, I had lovely conversations with the people who did attend. I met another indie author who specialises in werewolf fiction, and we immediately bonded over our shared love of the paranormal and the ups and downs of self-publishing. I spoke with passionate creatives, kind event volunteers, and curious visitors who were drawn in by my spooky books. I didn’t find my adoring fans this time — but I did find kindred spirits. And that, in many ways, is just as valuable.

My daughters came with me, as they often do for these events, and they had a wonderful time exploring Calderdale Industrial Museum. If you’ve never been, it’s well worth a visit. The museum is full of fascinating industrial history, strange machines, and local character. We loved wandering through the different rooms, imagining what life was like during the industrial revolution, and discovering the stories behind the gears and pulleys. It turned a disappointing business day into a joyful family outing.

A Learning Curve

And so, despite the lack of book sales, I’m choosing to see this as a learning curve. It’s a reminder to plan more strategically. To ask more questions before booking an event. To balance my adventurous spirit with a little more practicality. But it’s also a reminder that networking is a slow burn — and connections made today might blossom into opportunities tomorrow.

We will definitely return to Halifax soon — this time purely for fun! And who knows? Maybe I’ll be back at a future event, armed with better insight and a few new stories to share.

For now, I’m returning to my desk (and my mum duties) with a little more humility, a fresh perspective, and a heart full of gratitude for the people I did meet. Not every event will be a success. But every experience teaches me something — about business, about people, and about myself.

Until next time,

Catherine x

Book Review: Spellbound Embrace by Astrid Morino – A Sweet and Sexy Supernatural Romance

As many of you know, I love discovering new paranormal romance authors, and I recently received a book that fits the bill rather nicely. Spellbound Embrace by Astrid Morino is a British paranormal romance novel that blends witchcraft, demon lore, and modern-day living into a deliciously steamy tale of forbidden love.

I read this book with the intention of reviewing it for my SpookyMrsGreen blog, and I’m glad I did—because while it has its imperfections, it also has a charm that kept me turning the pages.

Book cover for Spellbound Embrace by Astrid Morino reviewed by paranormal author Catherine Green at SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog. Sweet romance spicy romance romantasy paranormal romance.
Book Review: Spellbound Embrace by Astrid Morino

Book Review: Spellbound Embrace by Astrid Morino

At the heart of Spellbound Embrace is the passionate and magical relationship between a powerful witch and a demon king. These two supernatural beings have chosen to live in the human world, hidden in plain sight, pretending to be ordinary people while navigating their secret, magical identities. It’s a story of desire, power, and destiny—laced with intrigue, secrecy, and of course, some delightfully hot romance.

A Strong Premise with a Sexy Core

Let’s start with the good stuff. First and foremost, the romantic and sexual chemistry between the two leads is on point. Amelia and Harry make for a cute couple. If you’re a fan of steamy scenes with emotional tension and plenty of heat, then Spellbound Embrace delivers. The author clearly enjoys writing about intimate moments, and I must say, those scenes were some of the best parts of the novel. They were beautifully described, intense, and just the right side of spicy to keep me entertained without feeling overdone.

For those of us who enjoy our romance with a magical twist, this book does an admirable job of weaving in spells, supernatural politics, and ancient rivalries. I always appreciate a story where the paranormal isn’t just window dressing, but a vital part of the plot and character development. There’s a sense that these characters have histories and loyalties that go far beyond the pages of the book, and that made the world feel a little richer.

Room for a Little More Depth

That said, I did feel that certain elements of suspense and drama in the story could have been developed further. There were a few moments where a plot twist or dramatic event occurred, but the impact was dulled by vague descriptions or a lack of emotional build-up. One particular scene, which should have been a pivotal moment, passed by so quickly and quietly that I nearly missed its significance. It’s a shame, because with a bit more tension and a sharper focus on those dramatic beats, the story could have had a much stronger emotional punch.

Similarly, some aspects of the storytelling felt slightly exaggerated or inconsistent. For example, there’s a scene where the main characters board a flight to a location that, realistically, would have been a short drive away in the UK. It’s a small detail, but it pulled me out of the story for a moment and made me question the practicality of the plot. Perhaps I’m being a little too grounded, but I always notice these things—and I know some of you will, too!

A British Setting with Global Appeal

Despite these small critiques, I did genuinely enjoy reading Spellbound Embrace. The British setting added a unique flavour to the story, with the occasional regional reference and a tone that feels grounded in everyday life, even as it explores a world of demons and magic. I love seeing more UK-based paranormal romance novels—it’s something we need more of in the genre!

Astrid Morino clearly has a talent for crafting love stories with magical elements, and I look forward to seeing how her writing develops in future works. If she continues to refine her suspense and deepen the emotional stakes, I think she’ll become a favourite for many readers who love the blend of fantasy, romance, and heat.

Final Thoughts

In summary, Spellbound Embrace is a sweet and sexy paranormal romance that tickled my imagination and satisfied my craving for steamy scenes with supernatural flair. While it wasn’t perfect—and I would have liked a bit more edge to some of the drama—it still held my interest and gave me a few swoon-worthy moments along the way.

If you’re in the mood for a love story that mixes the mystical with the modern, and you enjoy a generous helping of spice with your romance, then this one might just be for you.

I’d love for you to check it out and support the author, so if you’re intrigued, please click here to buy the book.  And of course, let me know what you think! Have you read Spellbound Embrace? Do you enjoy stories about witches and demons in love? Leave me a comment or pop over to my Facebook page for a chat—I always love to hear from fellow paranormal romance fans.

Keep it spooky,

Catherine x

Witchy Wednesday: Speaking My Truth Beneath the Flower Moon

This Witchy Wednesday post is not like the others. It’s not about crystals or spells or haunted adventures (though those remain a comforting constant in my chaotic world).

Today, I write from a place of vulnerability. The Flower Moon has stirred something deep within me. I feel raw. I feel cracked open. I feel… awake.

Gentle image of Spring flowers and a full moon with a woman walking away. Text reads, “Flower moon awakening. Sometimes the truth blooms when you’re finally ready to face it.” Witchy Wednesday at SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog.
Witchy Wednesday: Speaking My Truth Beneath the Flower Moon

Speaking My Truth Beneath the Flower Moon

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know that I write often about life as a mother, a wife, a witch, and more recently, the everyday reality of living in a neurodiverse household. It’s been a journey of growth, pain, healing, and the occasional meme-worthy meltdown. But today, I’m ready to speak a truth I’ve avoided for too long—maybe because saying it out loud makes it real.

I have been married for fifteen years to a man I met when we were wild, passionate, and full of dreams. In those early days, we set the world on fire with our love. He was intense, magnetic, and completely devoted—and I thrived on the spark we shared. But over the years, life dulled the flame. Or perhaps it simply shifted, as all fires do.

We built a family. We built a life. We weathered some brutal storms—emotionally, financially, spiritually. We even separated for a while during the Covid pandemic, and we chose to reunite, believing we could rebuild something new. But the truth is, we didn’t rebuild. We just returned to the same dynamic, hoping for different results.

I am Growing into Something More

Now, under the bright light of the Flower Moon, I can finally see it clearly. I am no longer the same woman who fell in love all those years ago. And I don’t think I want to be. I am growing into something more—someone more.

And here is the truth that burns in my heart: I cannot emotionally support my autistic husband anymore.

He is a good man. He is a loving father. He has his own struggles and triumphs. But energetically, he is a vampire—and I have allowed him to feed off me for more than two decades. That might sound dramatic, but if you’re an empath, if you’re a witch, if you know, then you know. I have spent years draining myself to keep him afloat. And I can’t do it anymore.

He is Stuck in a Pattern of Fear

He is stuck in a pattern of fear. Fear of change. Fear of failure. Fear of freedom, even. He fixates on problems instead of seeking solutions. He resists rest. He resists joy. Holidays are too complicated. Hobbies are unnecessary distractions. And worst of all, my creative work—my books, my blog, my spiritual practice—is seen as fluff. Frivolous. Something to be tolerated rather than celebrated.

I need more than that.

I need someone who sees my magic and says, “Yes, more, please.” I need someone who lifts me, not someone who holds me down to keep the status quo. I need fire and passion and purpose—not just duty and routine.

I don’t Know what Comes Next

I don’t know what comes next. Our children need us both. And I don’t have all the answers. But I do know this: I need to speak my truth. Even if my voice trembles.

So, to my fellow witches, empaths, and weary warriors—I see you. I feel your struggle. If you are holding on too tightly to something that no longer feeds your soul, I invite you to breathe. Cry. Sing. Dance beneath the moon. And listen to what your soul is trying to tell you.

Today’s soundtrack to my soul?

🎵 “In the End” – Linkin Park (because sometimes, no matter how hard you try…)
🎵 “Wherever You Will Go” – The Calling (for the ache of all the what-ifs)
🎵 And a selection of Bon Jovi classics, because let’s be honest, Jon has always understood my heart. Today I’ve got “These Days,” “Dry County,” and “Keep the Faith” on repeat. Because somehow, even in the midst of grief and heartbreak, I still believe in love. I still believe in me.

This is not a goodbye. This is a beginning.
The Flower Moon has cracked me open, and I am ready to bloom.

With love and moonlight,

The Greatest Ever Literary Villains Revealed – New Study of Book Lovers

The Greatest Ever Literary Villains Revealed

But it was the crazed serial killer, Hannibal Lecter (33 percent), the brainchild of Thomas Harris, who has been crowned our top scoundrel, according to the poll of 2,000 book lovers, by Kindle Storyteller Award, a literary prize celebrating the UK’s best self-published story, with the winning author receiving a £20,000 prize.

Count Dracula (26 percent) from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula came second, followed by the iconic Captain Hook (20 percent) from James Barrie’s Peter Pan and Lady MacBeth (18 percent) from William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Other bad guys making an appearance include Sauron (17 percent) from The Lords of the Rings by JRR Tolkien, Pennywise (16 percent) from Stephen King’s IT, Voldemort (16 percent) from the Harry Potter books, Cruella De Vil (16 percent) from Dodie Smith’s 101 Dalmatians and the frightening Miss Trunchbull (15 percent) from Roald Dahl’s Matilda.

One in ten (12 percent) love the antics of Bill Sikes in Oliver Twist, while 11 percent can’t forget the images of Annie Wilkes in Stephen King’s Misery.

Rooting for the Bad Guy

Almost half (45 percent) love them so much that they always find themselves rooting for the bad guy in a novel, with one in three (32 percent) finding it easier to get hooked on a book when there is a villain.

In fact, villains make such an impact that 18 percent believe they have more in common with them and one in ten (11 percent) say their all-time favourite character is a bad guy.

A sixth (16 percent) think villains are often just ‘misunderstood’.

Brits clearly Love a Good Villain

Jen Barrett, UK KDP Manager commented: “From Shakespearean scoundrels to fantasy foes and kids’ book baddies, Brits clearly love a good villain just as much as their beloved heroes. That passion shines through in many of our Kindle Storyteller Award entries. Championing independent authors and exploring the brilliant characters they dream up is always a judging highlight—and we can’t wait to see what this year’s entries bring, villains or otherwise.”

Two thirds (61 percent) agree that strong characters – both good and bad – are central to a great novel.

Who Loves the Good Guys?

When it comes to good guys, 007 himself, James Bond (27 percent) is the nation’s favourite, along with the small but mighty Frodo (27 percent), wizard Harry Potter (24 percent) and forever young Peter Pan (22 percent).

Oliver Twist (20 percent), Sherlock Holmes (19 percent), Hannibal Lecter’s adversary, Clarice Starling (19 percent) and Aslan (18 percent) from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe are also our heroes.

It’s no surprise that a WHOPPING 94 percent think that books are the most moving art form and have the power to elicit emotion with 23 percent wanting a book to evoke strong emotions in them.

Our Love for Strong, Emotive Books

Our love of strong emotive books is so powerful that 82 percent have reread a book they love an average of seven times.

Three quarters (76 percent) percent describe themselves as an avid reader, with a third (33 percent) admitting that reading is their passion and it is one of life’s greatest pleasures (86 percent).

In fact, the average Brit reads four books a month, preferring to escape with fiction (64 percent) rather than non-fiction (36 percent).

Thrillers (35 percent), true crime (33 percent), mystery (31 percent), murder mystery (28 percent), historical (27 percent) and romance (26 percent) are the nations go-to genres, along with fantasy (25 percent) and autobiographies (21 percent).

We Love a bit of Bedtime Reading

Brits are most likely to delve into a novel in bed before going to sleep (57 percent), on the sofa in the living room (46 percent), on holiday (39 percent) and in the garden in the sun (38 percent).

Almost a third (29 percent) love reading on a long train journey, while 20 percent have their head down during their commute.

Join Me at Leeds Steampunk Market – Paranormal Adventure and Gothic Delights

I have some very exciting news to share! This weekend, I will be trading at the Leeds Steampunk Market for the very first time as Paranormal Author Catherine Green. It was a late entry for me, but as soon as the opportunity came up, I jumped at the chance to join this unique and wonderfully quirky event.

If you’re in or around West Yorkshire and love all things steampunk, gothic, and paranormal, then come along and join the fun. I’ll be there on Sunday only, but the event runs all weekend, so there’s plenty to see and do.

Meet Paranormal Author Catherine Green at Leeds Steampunk Market in Calderdale Industrial Museum in Halifax shared by SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog. Steampunk image with a tree, cogs, compass, spirals and old writing formulae.

A Paranormal Twist in a Steampunk World

The Leeds Steampunk Market isn’t your average craft fair or book stall. This is a fantastical celebration of Victorian-inspired creativity with a modern twist – the perfect setting for my paranormal and urban fantasy novels. Expect to find a diverse array of independent traders, artists, authors, and performers. The atmosphere is always vibrant, filled with top hats, corsets, pocket watches, mechanical contraptions, and more than a little eccentricity.

This year’s event takes place at the Calderdale Industrial Museum in Halifax, a location that oozes character and industrial heritage. It’s the perfect backdrop for steampunk storytelling and Gothic literature – right up my street!

As SpookyMrsGreen and an author of supernatural fiction, I feel right at home among this wonderfully weird and welcoming crowd.

Meet the Redcliffe Novels Series

At my stall, you’ll find my full Redcliffe novels series, set in a fictional Cornish seaside town that hides some very dark secrets beneath its picturesque surface. The stories follow the life of Jessica Stone, a bookshop owner who discovers the supernatural world through her entanglements with a vampire boyfriend and his identical twin brother – who just so happens to be the alpha werewolf of the Redcliffe pack.

The Redcliffe novels explore themes of love, lust, loyalty, and power. They feature vampires, werewolves, witches, and a touch of polyamorous romance as Jessica’s world spirals into the unknown. It’s a mix of Gothic atmosphere and urban fantasy with British charm and a distinctly coastal vibe.

Whether you’re discovering the series for the first time or looking to complete your collection, I’ll have all six books available to purchase. Come and chat with me about your favourite characters, ask questions, or simply share your love for paranormal romance – I’m always happy to connect with readers!

Don’t Miss My Vampire Hunters

Alongside the Redcliffe series, I will also have copies of my vampire hunter novels, including Vampire of Blackpool and Return of the Vampire Hunter. These stories are a little darker, a little more mysterious, and feature characters who operate on the edges of society – battling vampires in gritty British towns and cities.

I’m particularly excited to share some behind-the-scenes details about my next vampire hunter book, which is due for publication later this year. This new story features a vampire hunter from Yorkshire – a character I’m especially fond of because they bring a no-nonsense Northern energy to the world of supernatural investigation. I’ll be dropping some teasers on Sunday, so if you’re curious, come and ask me about it in person!

Haunted Dolls and Ghost Stories

You may also know me from my adventures in real-life paranormal investigation. I’ve been working with haunted dolls, communicating with spirits using dowsing rods, spirit boxes, and REM pods. Some of those tales may find their way into future fiction, but for now, I’ll be more than happy to share spooky stories with anyone brave enough to ask.

There’s something about events like this – the vintage clothing, the industrial setting, the buzz of creative energy – that lends itself beautifully to ghost stories. If you’re intrigued by the supernatural, I’d love to talk about it with you.

Why I Love Events Like This

For me, book signings and markets aren’t just about sales. They’re about connection. I love meeting people who enjoy paranormal fiction as much as I do, who want to chat about their favourite vampire films or who have a secret soft spot for the werewolf underdog. I’ve met some truly wonderful people at events like this, and I always come away feeling creatively inspired and energised.

And let’s be honest – any excuse to dress up in a velvet cloak and wear a corset is a win in my book!

Come and Say Hello – Just on Sunday!

Due to personal commitments, I can only trade on the Sunday, but I’m looking forward to a full, fun day of meeting readers and fellow spooky souls. I hope to attend a full weekend event soon – fingers crossed for later this year!

There will be so much to see and do – entertainment, shopping, talks, and demonstrations. Bring your curiosity, your steampunk attire, and your love for the unusual. This is more than a market – it’s a community, a celebration of creativity, and a place where the paranormal feels perfectly at home.

See you there?
