Free for All Friday: Replica Swords & Armour for Your Inner Warrior

If you’ve spent any time with teenagers lately, you’ll know they have very specific interests—and my eldest daughter is currently obsessed with weapons.

Not in a worrying way, of course (well… maybe just a little when she starts naming them!), but in a passionate, historical-research-meets-fantasy-novelist kind of way. She’s utterly fascinated by swords, shields, and anything that resembles medieval or Roman battlefield gear.

Witchy Wednesday: A Little Moon Magic and a Surprise Spirit Encounter

Friday the 13th… a date that sends a shiver down many spines. But for me, it’s always felt like a day of mystical opportunity, especially when it falls so close to a full moon.

This year, Friday 13th felt extra potent, following the Strawberry Full Moon and riding high on summer’s lush, magical energy. So, with a day off work and a bit of time on my hands, I decided to share a little moon magic with my daughters.

Spooky image of Catherine and her daughter sitting in a magical circle with haunted dolls, candles, crystals, a salt circle, magical tools and spell crafting supplies. Witchy Wednesday: A Little Moon Magic and a Surprise Spirit Encounter at SpookyMrsGreen.com spooky family lifestyle blog.
Witchy Wednesday: A Little Moon Magic and a Surprise Spirit Encounter ✨ 😱

A Little Moon Magic and a Surprise Spirit Encounter

After school, I asked the girls if they fancied learning how to set up a magical energy circle for spell crafting. To my delight, they said yes! We gathered everything we needed for a powerful little ritual: candles, moon water (infused with home-grown strawberries from our garden 🌕🍓), crystals, salt, my crystal wand, and of course, my trusted spell book. It felt like a lovely way to ground ourselves and clear away any lingering tension as we called in abundance and good vibes for the weeks ahead.

My younger daughter, G, added a fun twist to the ritual. She insisted on including two of our newer haunted dolls in the circle. Without hesitation, she carefully placed them within the space as if they’d always belonged there. And, well… that’s when the energy shifted.

A Full-Blown Ghost Investigation

What began as a gentle spell soon turned into a full-blown ghost investigation! Let’s just say, attention spans were short, and the Spirit Talker app was soon active and pinging with phrases. I laughed, closed down the circle properly to respect the energies, and joined my two little investigators (and the dolls!) for an impromptu paranormal session right in our living room.

We brought out the Necrophonic app and started asking Spirit to speak. G believes her newest doll may be linked to someone from World War Two, and during our session, she heard the name “Nell.” We asked Nell to confirm her presence—and to our amazement, we clearly heard air raid sirens coming through the app on three separate occasions. The timing was uncanny.

Then Came Something Unexpected

Then came something unexpected—French voices. Were they connected to Nell? Could they be spirits from wartime Europe, perhaps travellers or soldiers? We aren’t sure yet, but it certainly opened up more questions. Our second doll, Betsy, stayed unusually quiet. Maybe she’s shy… or simply waiting for the right moment to speak.

What I love most about these sessions is sharing them with my daughters. They take the lead, ask intuitive questions, and genuinely feel the energy. It was such a fun and unexpected evening—starting with spellcraft and ending with a haunting twist! We’ll definitely work with Nell again and see what else she wants to share. As for Betsy, we’ll give her time. Spirits work in their own way.

Summer Solstice Just Around the Corner

With Summer Solstice just around the corner, who knows what magical energies will stir next? We’ll be ready, with our candles lit, crystals charged, and curious minds wide open.

Have you ever invited your haunted objects into your spellwork? Or had a ritual go off in an unexpected direction? I’d love to hear your stories! Let’s keep the witchy conversation flowing in the comments.

✨ Blessed be and spooky hugs from SpookyMrsGreen ✨

Mummy Monday: Supporting My LGBTQ+ Family with Love and Pride 🌈

As we find ourselves halfway through Pride Month, I feel it’s the perfect time to reflect on what it means to be a proud wife and mother in a family that embraces LGBTQ+ identities with love, openness, and ongoing growth.

Read my blog post to discover my family story where we cannot always be ourselves publicly but our light shines quietly within our safe space.

Image of a Pride rainbow and bisexual pride hearts with a silhouette of a family including mum, dad, girl and boy. Pride flag. Bisexual pride flag. Mummy Monday: Supporting My LGBTQ+ Family with Love and Pride at SpookyMrsGreen.com spooky family lifestyle blog.
Mummy Monday: Supporting My LGBTQ+ Family with Love and Pride 🌈

Supporting My LGBTQ+ Family

This journey hasn’t always been straightforward. My daughter is still young—just finishing her first year at high school—but she is already surrounded by a diverse and supportive group of LGBTQ+ friends. She attends the weekly Rainbow Club with pride, and I’ve watched her confidence blossom as she explores her identity, builds new friendships, and finds her voice in a world that often feels loud and complicated. I couldn’t be prouder of the kind, creative and compassionate young person she is becoming.

Then there is my husband—my partner of twenty-five years, and my husband of fifteen. His story is different. His journey through sexuality and identity has been quieter, lonelier, and much more internalised. He only came out to me several years into our marriage, and while it didn’t change the love between us, it did open up a whole new chapter of honesty, reflection, and healing.

He has carried the weight of societal expectations for most of his life—masking, hiding, conforming. Add to that the recent realisation that he is neurodivergent, and it becomes even clearer just how complex and brave his story really is. Autism can often blur the emotional landscape, making it difficult to express deep truths or even recognise them for yourself. I know now that he’s spent decades trying to understand how to fit into a world that never gave him the right tools.

We have so much more to learn about each other

We’re still figuring things out, and that’s okay. Love doesn’t come with a rulebook, and neither does marriage. What matters is that we are open, we are honest, and we are learning what he needs to be truly happy—whether that means redefining our relationship or reshaping our home life to better suit everyone’s emotional needs. He is not alone anymore. And neither am I.

Being an LGBTQ+ ally isn’t just about waving a rainbow flag once a year. It’s about listening. It’s about unlearning. It’s about loving without limits and supporting the people we care about as they evolve into their truest, most authentic selves. That includes our children, our partners, our friends—and even ourselves.

So this Mummy Monday, I want to send love to all the families like mine who are navigating their way through love, identity, and acceptance with courage and heart. Whether you’re out and proud, quietly questioning, or somewhere in between, you are valid. You are seen. You are loved.

🌕 Witchy Wednesday: Strawberry Full Moon Magic 🍓✨

Hello, my spooky friends! It’s Witchy Wednesday, and today we’re celebrating one of the sweetest and most magical full moons of the year — the Strawberry Full Moon.

Now, don’t get too excited — there won’t be actual strawberries hanging in the sky (though wouldn’t that be delightful?). The name comes from Native American and European traditions marking the time of year when strawberries are ripe for harvest. 🌾🍓

This year, the Strawberry Moon brings an extra special treat for us moon-gazers and witches. The full moon is appearing closer to the horizon than usual — meaning it will look larger and more golden when it first rises. This low-hanging moon is perfect for adding extra power to your full moon rituals and casting a warm glow over your spellwork.

🌕 Witchy Wednesday: Strawberry Full Moon Magic 🍓✨

Embracing the Magic of the Moment

I must confess… my crystal collection is looking a little dusty, and my altar could do with a proper cleanse. 😅 It seems my magical practice has gone a bit stagnant — life has been busy, and I’ve neglected those small, sacred moments that nourish the spirit.

So if you, like me, need a gentle nudge to reconnect with your magic, this is the perfect time! The Strawberry Full Moon is all about abundance, sweetness, and renewal — ideal energies for sweeping out the cobwebs (literal and metaphorical) and inviting fresh enchantment into your life. 🕯️✨

Full Moon Spell: Sweet Renewal Ritual

Here’s a simple spell you can try tonight under the Strawberry Full Moon:

You will need:

  • A white or pink candle
  • A bowl of water
  • A few drops of rose or strawberry oil (or fresh strawberry juice if you prefer)
  • Your favourite crystals (even if they’re dusty — we’ll sort that out!)
  • Pen and paper

The spell:

  1. Cleanse your space — light your candle and gently waft the flame near your crystals and your working area to symbolically clear away old energy. You can also speak aloud:
“I cleanse this space of all that is stale. I welcome fresh, flowing energy.”
  2. Place your bowl of water in the moonlight (by a window or outside if possible). Add the rose or strawberry oil.
  3. Write on your paper what you wish to renew or attract: fresh inspiration, renewed magical connection, love, abundance, joy — whatever speaks to you.
  4. Fold the paper and hold it over the bowl. Imagine the energy of the Strawberry Moon charging the water with vibrant, sweet magic. Say:
“By the light of the Strawberry Moon, I welcome sweet renewal. May this energy flow through me and my life.”
  5. Gently sprinkle a few drops of the moon-charged water onto your crystals and altar items to cleanse and reactivate them. You can also anoint yourself with the water for a personal blessing.
  6. Close your ritual by thanking the moon and extinguishing your candle.

A Little Witchy Reminder…

Remember, you don’t have to be perfect in your practice. The wheel of the year turns whether we show up with a grand ritual or a cup of tea under the stars. The key is to return, to reconnect — even if your crystals have gathered dust and your spell books are buried under life’s clutter. (I’m speaking from experience here! 😅)

So let’s embrace this beautiful Strawberry Full Moon together. Take a deep breath, sweep out that stagnant energy, and let’s reinvoke our magic. The moon is rising to meet us, large and glowing, full of possibilities.

Blessed Full Moon, my lovelies! 🌕🍓✨

Book Review: The Freiburg Cabinet by Thomas Charrington

Welcome back to another #FreeForAllFriday on SpookyMrsGreen! Today I’m diving into a rather intriguing novel that I’ve just finished reading — The Freiburg Cabinet by Thomas Charrington. If you’re in the mood for a slightly unconventional story centred around antiques, fraud, and a dash of romance, then this might just pique your interest.

I must admit, I had mixed feelings about this one.

Book cover for The Freiburg Cabinet by Thomas Charrington reviewed by paranormal author Catherine Green at SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog. Crime caper about antiques fraud in England and France.
Book Review: The Freiburg Cabinet by Thomas Charrington

First Impressions

To start with, this is quite a hefty book — although strangely, the paperback copy I received had no page numbers, which drove me a little mad! It’s hard to gauge your progress when you don’t know how many pages you’ve conquered. It also made it feel like more of a slog at times.

The story kicks off slowly, and I really had to push myself through the first few chapters. The initial characters didn’t particularly grab me — they felt like fairly stereotypical players, and I found it difficult to connect with them. For a while, I was worried I wouldn’t make it through the book at all!

Picking Up Pace

Thankfully, things started to shift when the action moved from England to France. I do love a good French chateau, and the setting added a certain charm that helped keep me turning the pages. At this point, the storyline began to take shape and offered more intrigue.

The strongest characters in the novel are undoubtedly Constanta, Tarquin, Petru, and the delightful dog, Percy. As the “good guys,” they naturally garnered the most attention and development. Meanwhile, the Russian businessman, Zoltan — supposedly the shady villain — ended up being surprisingly likeable! In fact, I found him one of the more interesting characters in the whole book.

The downside? There are a lot of characters involved. I found myself backtracking on several occasions just to keep track of who was doing what and why.

The Plot

At its core, The Freiburg Cabinet is a story about fraud in the world of antiques. It follows the creation of a fake cabinet, designed to mimic a legendary piece of furniture thought to have been lost during the French Revolution. The characters involved aim to sell this counterfeit for a small fortune — but as you might expect, things do not go according to plan.

Enter Zoltan’s revenge plot, sparked by betrayal from his former business partner. What follows is a tangled web of mistaken identity, innocent people getting caught in the crossfire, and plenty of twists to keep the reader guessing.

Final Thoughts

While I wouldn’t say this was an easy read — nor one I’d recommend to everyone — it does have its moments. If you’re fascinated by the world of antiques and the murky business of fake treasures, you’ll probably find it an interesting glimpse into that world. The subplot of romance adds a human touch to balance out the darker themes.

Personally, I struggled with the pacing and the sheer number of characters, but I did enjoy elements of the story, especially once it picked up speed.

Would I read it again? Probably not. Would I suggest it to someone with a passion for antique furniture and the hidden stories behind it? Absolutely!

Have you read The Freiburg Cabinet, or do you have any favourite novels set in the world of antiques and art fraud? Drop your recommendations in the comments — I’d love to hear them! 📚✨

Witchy Wednesday: A Love Lost, A Strength Found

This week, I’m celebrating what should be a joyous milestone—my fifteenth wedding anniversary. But instead of roses and celebrations, I’m reflecting on a love story that’s taken a turn. After twenty-five years together, the marriage that once felt unbreakable has been overshadowed by the harsh reality of life, love, and growth.

As I navigate this painful chapter, I’ve been asking myself some tough questions. What does love truly mean? How do we continue to evolve as individuals while still honouring the bonds we’ve built? And, most importantly, how do we reclaim our power when everything we once believed about love starts to unravel?

This Witchy Wednesday, I want to share my personal journey—a raw, real look at what happens when love fades, and self-love must take its place. Through it all, I’m finding strength, and magic, and learning how to lead by example for my daughters.

A Love Lost, A Strength Found

This week, I find myself reflecting on a milestone that should be filled with joy. It’s my fifteenth wedding anniversary with Daniel—my husband, my partner, my teenage sweetheart. Together, we’ve shared twenty-five years, and yet, the occasion feels bittersweet. It’s a day that marks love and loss all at once.

The truth is, our marriage is broken. There are no grand celebrations planned, no romantic dinner or surprise getaway. The love we once had has been overshadowed by life’s cruel twists—career demands, the invisible weight of my husband’s autism, and the shifting priorities that have slowly pulled us apart. His job takes precedence over everything, and I find myself no longer willing to wait for the affection and attention I need. In this space, I’ve had to face some hard truths about my own needs, desires, and future.

As a mother of two teenage girls, I know my role has evolved. I want to be a strong, empowered female role model for them—someone who stands up for herself and knows when to let go. Love is not about sacrifice at the expense of your own happiness, and it’s important they see that lesson. Even though this chapter feels painful, I am learning to put myself first. I am reclaiming my power and focusing on my career and passions.

This journey has not been easy

But let me not fool you—this journey has not been easy. There’s been heartache, frustration, and a lot of quiet nights where the questions seemed endless. Yet, there’s also been growth, strength, and clarity. Through it all, I’ve found solace in the magic I carry inside me—our ancestors’ wisdom, the strength of the moon, and the power of self-love.

So, to anyone reading this who may find themselves in a similar place, I want to offer a little magic, a reminder that you can choose to love yourself fiercely, no matter the circumstances. Below is a simple love spell for those moments when you need to reconnect with your heart and summon some self-love into your life.

A Self-Love Spell for New Beginnings

What you’ll need:

  • A pink candle (representing love)
  • A small rose quartz crystal (for self-love and healing)
  • Lavender (for calm and peace)
  • A small piece of paper and pen
  • Begin by lighting the pink candle and placing the rose quartz crystal in front of it.
  • Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and focus on the love within you. Reflect on the things you love about yourself—your strength, your resilience, your beauty, inside and out.
  • On the piece of paper, write down any thoughts or feelings that may be holding you back from loving yourself fully. This could be fear, doubt, or unresolved pain.
  • Sprinkle a little lavender over the paper as you say the following words:

“With love, I release the past,
I open my heart to love that will last.
From within, I reclaim my light,
May I walk in love both day and night.”

  • Fold the paper and hold it in your hands, feeling the energy of self-love fill you. Let the candle burn until you feel ready to extinguish it, knowing that you are deserving of all the love you seek.

Learn to let go

As we move through life, we learn to let go of the things that no longer serve us. This may mean walking away from something that once was beautiful but has become broken. And in the space of letting go, there is room for new beginnings—new love, new purpose, and above all, a deeper connection to our own magic.

May you find peace in your journey, just as I am finding mine.
