#BookReview Incy Wincy (Mal & Jackie Book 2) by R.J. Dark

Malachite Jones is a pretend psychic medium and an unwilling detective. He certainly doesn’t want anyone bringing him a missing persons case. Definitely not two.

When a body turns up he knows life is only going to get harder.

Incy wincy: A Malachite Jones and Jackie Singh Khattar Novel by R.J. Dark reviewed on SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Incy wincy: A Malachite Jones and Jackie Singh Khattar Novel by R.J. Dark

My Review

Yorkshire meets Hollywood with a dash of British cynicism thrown in for good measure.

This was a very interesting book and not my usual choice. It is the second in a series, but I had no difficulty recognising the characters as they were introduced. I think the story was set in Leeds or Sheffield, but it was never properly confirmed, and I don’t know either of those cities well enough to recognise some of the estates and areas that featured in the book. I did enjoy reading a book set in the North of England that was modern, that I could relate to, and that managed to combine Hollywood action with British reservedness, if that makes sense.

Jackie was an interesting character, who at first I disliked but in the end grew quite fond of, even recognising and understanding why he behaved the way that he did. Mal was a fairly regular character, and my one disappointment was that he didn’t display any obvious psychic skills during the story. I know he is faking it and that is made clear from the start, but still, he must have something that made him set up the business, surely?

Generally, I am glad I read this book, it had me gripped when the action kicked in, and it left me thinking about what happened for a while afterwards.

#BookReview: “Presents from the Past: Poetic Memories from Times Gone By” by Elliot Stanton

Presents from the Past: Nostalgic and wistful – new humour-infused poetry anthology makes the perfect rose-tinted spectacle read.

Elliot Stanton’s Presents from the Past takes a light-hearted and sentimental trip down memory lane as he shares fifty poems that have milestones and those all-important smaller moments from his life at their heart.

My Review of “Presents from the Past: Poetic Memories from Times Gone By” by Elliot Stanton

I enjoyed reading these poems and they did indeed take me down a nostalgic path. While I wasn’t as keen on the poems about attending football matches and collecting football stickers, I favoured the poems about sweet snacks and candy from the old days (1980s and 1990s), the reminiscence of computer games, VHS, taping songs from the radio and all those little things we did as children. This book certainly appeals to the older age group, 40 and up. I really liked a short poem called Coins from a Bygone Europe, with a clever little twist at the end. There is humour and nostalgia in abundance in these poems and they will make you smile and nod agreement as you read them.

Elliot Stanton’s Presents from the Past is a package of poetical delight

As the 51-year-old author shares some of the milestone moments and the smaller details of his life growing up in the seventies and eighties, this poetry anthology reminds us that our history is being created every day, but sometimes we need to stop and cherish what has gone before.

From the last day of term and school dinners to favourite snacks and eighties must-watch TV, these are eloquent memories that will strike a chord with all.

A perfect gift for all those embracing their sixth decade, Presents from the Past is a pertinent reminder to actually cherish the moment (and not just post it on social media) and to embrace the minutiae that make us whole.

Synopsis:

We all love a bit of nostalgia, and even unfortunate or infuriating events can become fond and well-loved memories over time. Presents From the Past is a humour-infused collection of fifty poems that I have created from such memories. Many of them are from childhood and have lived long in my consciousness, but some are a little more recent and have only just laid down roots in my mind.

This book features poetic reminiscences of such subjects as favourite bygone snacks and old TV programmes, the thrill of the last day of school and attending your first football match, teenage trips to the local cinema and memories of treasured family vacations.

I am confident that every reader will find something that resonates deeply, thus providing that warm, satisfying glow of nostalgia we often long for.

The author says:

Presents From the Past is a collection of 50 poems emerging from fond memories of my childhood, adolescence and young adulthood.

“Of course, my memories are not your memories, but I know each reader will find something that resonates with their own formative years. The theme is affectionate nostalgia, and the compositions project unabashed sentimentality, wistfulness, and touching humour.

“Whilst there are a couple of poems with ‘messages,’ my aim is purely to entertain and remind people of a more innocent and gentler time.”

About the author

Presents From the Past is Elliot Stanton’s seventh book and his second book of poetry, following, It Can’t Just Be Me.

Four of his previous books are humorous novels that all include various aspects of true-life events, but he decided he wanted to try something different this time. So, in the spring of 2019, he decided to write a series of Tales of the Unexpected–type stories and twelve months later, he’d written enough tales to create The Crimson Scarf and Other Short Stories.

During the pandemic lockdown in early 2021, he started writing short, humorous poems on the things seen and experienced. They culminated in two collections; It Can’t Just Be Me – Poetic Observations on Modern Life and Presents from The Past – Poetic Memories from Times Gone By.

Tips For Parents To End Off The School Year

It’s hard to believe that another school year is coming close. But, as a parent, you can do a few things to help your child transition from the school year to summer break. Here are a few tips.

Via Pexels

Reflect On The Past Year

Talk with your child about their favourite memories from the past school year. What were some of the highlights? What did they learn? This is a great time to reflect on all of their progress and the friendships they have formed.

Wrap Up The Formalities

Make sure you’ve taken care of all the paperwork and formalities required by the school. This includes returning textbooks, filling out any necessary forms, and paying any outstanding fees. One thing you shouldn’t forget about is organising the teacher gifts; this is a small but significant gesture.

Get Organised For Next Year

The end of the school year is also a great time to organise next year. This includes buying supplies, picking out a new backpack, and updating any vital contact information. The transition back to school in the fall will be much smoother by getting a head start on these things. In addition, it will allow you all to relax and enjoy the summer and not stress at the last minute about getting everything together.

Set Some Goals

The summer break is a great time to set some goals for the next school year. What does your child want to achieve? Whether getting straight A’s, making new friends, or becoming more involved in extracurricular activities, setting some goals will help them stay focused and motivated.

Create A Schedule

One of the best ways to avoid summertime boredom is to create a schedule. This doesn’t mean that every minute of every day needs to be planned out, but having a general idea of what activities will be taking place each day will help keep your child on track. Get their input on what they would like to do and include a mix of educational and fun activities.

Get Involved in Their Interests

Summer is a great time to explore your child’s interests. If they’re interested in learning more about a particular topic, look for books, movies, and activities that can help foster their love of learning. There are also plenty of summer camp options that focus on specific interests like sports, the arts, and technology.

If there is something your child is passionate about, whether it’s a sport, hobby, or activity, get involved in their interests and help them pursue them. This is a great way to bond with your child and teach them valuable life lessons.

Enjoy The Summer

Finally, make sure you enjoy the summer! This is a time for your child to relax and recharge. Encourage them to try new things, explore their interests, and have fun. Summer is a great time to create lasting memories with your family. So make the most of it!

The end of the school year is always a hectic time for parents. There’s a lot to do, from trying to tie up loose ends at school to getting organised for the summer. But by following these tips, you can help make the transition smoother for both you and your child. And before you know it, summer will be here!

Bella Novela by Charlotte Harrison-King introduces the deliciously vibrant and cinema loving Catherine Lish.  Discovering a neglected little girl on a beach in Mexico, Catherine has some big decisions to make. “Bella Novela” by Charlotte Harrison-King

A debut triumph, Bella Novela hooks you in from the start, and though published less than a month ago, it already has reviewers saying they need to read it again.

A rollercoaster of a read, Charlotte Harrison-King not only spoils her audience with effervescent characters but weaves a rainbow of emotions, quirkiness and accessible pop culture references throughout her plot which keeps the surprises and delight coming.

Offering a well-crafted narrative and pure escapism, Bella Novela is finding favour with both sexes and is a literary treasure well deserving of a top spot on this summer’s must-read list.

Synopsis:

“When floaty-dressed rock chick Catherine Lish encounters a neglected little girl on a beach in Mexico, she faces a dilemma. Should she just keep walking, continue her holiday and then return to her comfortable yet complicated life in England? Or will the cinema aficionado in her know a plot twist when she sees one and allow a random act of kindness to change the script of her life forever?

“Sun-kissed, twisty, and yearningly romantic, Bella Novela is a quirky international tale which reminds us that things are rarely what they seem on the surface.”

Awarded five-stars by Amazon readers, reviews include:

“Finding it incredibly hard to put down. Whether it’s the daily commute or sneaking a chapter in on your break, you’re going to find a lot of time to read this.” – Daniel

“If you’re looking for a good book to read by the pool, look no further. I laughed out loud at the witty writing-couldn’t put it down! Charlotte Harrison-King fills the pages with intrigue, humour, love, passion and turmoil…just genius.” – Miss Natalie Knutton

“I don’t read very often but the cover art grabbed my attention, so I gave it a go. It was so good; I just wish I hadn’t rushed it – might read it again! New favourite.” – Amazon Customer

“I’m not a big reader and I’m no expert but I just can’t stop thinking about the characters. Don’t want to spoil anything… but… wow. I honestly loved it. And the film and music references were great.” – Jack

“Bought it to read on the flights to and from and weekend away. I got so engrossed that I was reading it every chance I got and ended up missing my stop on the metro at one point. Found myself liking most of the characters and empathizing with them. It had me close to tears in parts and laughing out loud in others. Highly recommend.” – Scott

“Absolutely fabulous and would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to get sucked into a book! I read this in a matter of days and to be honest was sad when I had finished it. A great way to find a little escapism” – Abbey

“This book is pure class! The story is well structured and gripping. I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen next! Best thing I’ve read in years. I also loved the complexity of the characters. The writers style is unique and I’m really looking forward to future literary gems from her.” – Amazon Customer

Published by Four Parrots Publishing, “Bella Novela” is available in paperback (£11.99) and Kindle format (£2.99) on Amazon – Click here.

About the author:

Charlotte Harrison-King is from Derby, where she works for the NHS.

Anyone that knows Charlotte will testify that there are unmistakable traces of her personality throughout Bella Novela, and so an author biography will feel fairly unnecessary if you have already read the story.

From her film and media degree to the Jurassic Park posters she had on her walls as a child, her stratospheric anxiety levels, fondness for rock music and fear of iguanas – Bella Novela is a love letter to everything she loves and some things she loathes.  Whether you care to or not therefore, you will know this author intimately after reading her debut novel.

Top Tips For A Healthy Family Lifestyle

Following a healthy lifestyle is often easier said than done. After all, there is temptation everywhere – from fast-food restaurants to hitting that snooze alarm in the morning. However, these challenges become even more difficult when you’re trying to take care of your children’s health and your own.

While we should allow ourselves some indulgences from time to time, there are plenty of ways in which you can begin to develop healthier habits as a family.

Here are some top tips to get you started!

Top Tips For A Healthy Family Lifestyle

  • Experiment in the kitchen. One of the biggest misconceptions is the idea that healthy eating = boring. There are plenty of delicious recipes you can make that include healthy ingredients and will please even the fussiest eaters. For example, you could try out the family favorite slow cooker pot roast.
  • Minimize your impact. The next thing that may help influence the health of your lifestyle overall is your sustainable efforts. By reducing your impact on the world, making green changes to your lifestyle such as investing in electric car batteries and so on, and becoming more sustainable, it will help you to feel like you’re being healthier in the world overall.
  • Talk openly about how you feel. Taking care of your health means taking care of both the physical and mental aspects of your wellbeing. Thankfully, one way you can go about  demystifying and tackling stress and anxiety includes talking openly about how you are feeling. Children emulate their parents’ behaviours, so being open and honest yourself will encourage them to be more forthcoming when it comes to discussing difficult emotions and asking for help.
  • Start working out together. Regular exercise is not only a great way to get fit, but it also supports your mental wellbeing. As a result, you should strive to ensure the entire family stays as active as possible. One way you can achieve this goal is by finding a fun workout activity you can all do together. For example, you could go for a hike or a long walk in nature.
  • Focus on getting enough rest. Getting enough sleep is essential. The quality of sleep you receive impacts your mood and outlook, but it also has a significant impact on your health. Ensure that each member of your family has a night-time routine and goes to bed around the same time each night. This will subconsciously trick their brains into feeling tired around this time, making it easier to drift off. When your children are younger, you should naturally be stricter regarding their bedtime and take steps to ensure they drift off quickly. For example, you could read them a story or make sure they stay away from tech for an hour or so before sleeping.

Find fun ways to boost your mood. A healthy lifestyle doesn’t just mean eating your five a day; it also means being able to manage your stress and anxiety levels. As a result, you should also strive to incorporate plenty of mood-boosting activities into your schedule. For example, this is one of the many benefits of having a hobby, as they allow you to channel negative feelings and emotions into something infinitely more positive. You could also begin to practice meditation with your children. By introducing them to meditation and mindfulness at an early age, you will also be teaching them useful ways to regulate their emotions and find peace and calm in their daily lives.

Geomag Toy Review by SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Geomag Toy Review

Review #1: Geomag Super Color Magnetic Construction Set

E (age 11) – I like these sets because you can do a lot with them. The magnets are super strong, and the pieces are colourful and easy to work with, which I like. Plus, they come with a special case to store the pieces, so you don’t lose them. They are great for creating cool structures and shapes.

Review #2: Geomag Mechanics Loops and Turns Construction Set

G (age 8) – These sets are lots of fun to play with, and we have the same ones at school so I’m glad I have one at home to play with whenever I want to. The pieces are colourful and fun, and I like the shiny, strong magnets. This set was a little bit tricky for me to build with, but I had fun trying and I will have fun playing with it again at the weekend.

Geomag Mechanics Loops and Turns Construction Set – 130pc £34.99 from The Toy Shop

Mechanics Gravity Magnetic Track harnesses the invisible forces of magnetism and gravity through original and surprising means. The spheres inside the circuit are set in motion by an innovative magnetic cannon that uses the force of attraction of the accelerating magnet. The motion is provided by the invisible forces of Gravity and Magnetism, without using electricity or batteries.

What Mum thought of the play sets

I think these play sets are fantastic! They kept my girls entertained for a good couple of hours when we first opened them, and they even distracted the children from their devices and TV time, which is always a good thing. I like that the play sets are made from 100% recycled plastic, and that they are easy to store tidily. No more fiddly bits getting lost around the house! The play sets are affordable and come in different sizes and age ranges so you can easily find the best one for your child, or the child you are buying a gift for. They are great for developing coordination, imagination play and learning to follow instructions (they each come with a guidebook to get the children started). I highly recommend them.

The Only Wedding Glam Guide You Need

If you are getting married in 2022, there is a lot that needs to be considered. Not only do you need to sort out the guest list but you need to think about what you are going to be wearing, how you are going to have your hair, your make-up for the day, and so on.

When it comes to the glam side of getting married, it can feel quite overwhelming. After all, you want to make sure that you look your best. All eyes are going to be on you, and we’re sure you do not intend on getting married again in the future, so you want to make sure that you look your very best.

There is no need to panic, though, as we are here to help you with that. Below, we are going to provide you with all of the wedding glam information that you could possibly need in order to look and feel your best on your wedding day, just like you deserve!

Beauty hazards you must avoid in the weeks building up to your wedding

We are going to start off by taking a look at some of the things you should not do in the weeks building up to your wedding. For example, we definitely would not recommend that you change your hair to a completely new colour altogether. This is never a wise idea. You may not like the outcome, or the colour may not take to your hair in the way you had hoped. Yes, use the best products for shiny hair so your hair looks amazing but think twice before you completely change your look.

We also do not advise you to get your first ever wax in the months prior to your wedding. If you usually shave or use hair removal cream, for instance, getting your first wax before your special is not a wise idea. This is simply because you may have a reaction to it, causing your skin to appear red and lumpy. In fact, this applies to any sort of facial treatment, such as a chemical peel. If you have never tried the treatment in question before, we would advise having it done considerably in advance of your wedding as a trial run so you can see how your skin reacts.

We would also recommend that you try to limit your consumption of salt considerably in the build-up to your wedding. While this may seem like odd advice, there is a reason for it. Sodium can hold as much as 50x times its weight when it is in water. Therefore, you can shed some pounds and reduce any bloatedness you are feeling by limiting your salt intake. Plus, did you know that salt can also make your face look swollen?

Beauty hazards to avoid on your wedding day

Now that we have covered the time period leading up to your big day, we are going to focus on the day itself. You want everything to go as smoothly as possible, which is why preparation is key. We always recommend a make-up trial run so that you do not feel stressed or unhappy on your wedding morning.

It is also advisable to avoid getting a spray tan on the evening before your wedding. You do not want to have orange marks on your dress.

Another error we see a lot of people make is that they do their nails too early. You should try to leave your nails to a day or two before the wedding. If you get them done considerably in advance, they can end up getting chipped at the last moment.

There are also certain foods that can cause you to have a breakout. Chocolate is a prime example. While it may be tempting to have a chocolate bar because you are feeling stressed and worn out, it is important to think about your skin and the impact it could have.

Spend some time researching different wedding hair and makeup looks online

In addition to the mistakes that you need to avoid and the other pieces of advice that we have provided above, it is important to make sure you spend some time understanding what you really want from your hair and makeup on your wedding day. There are so many options available so it is really about considering what is going to fit in with the theme, what suits you, and ultimately, what you like!

The great thing about social media today is that it has made it easier than ever before to find great wedding hair and beauty suggestions. Pinterest and Instagram are great for this. You will also find some useful content on YouTube too. When you are assessing all of the different wedding looks, it is important to think about what they would look like on you, the style of dress you are wearing, and the look of the venue as a whole. After all, you want to make sure that everything ties together perfectly.

Make sure you book a hair and makeup trial

Most people book a professional hairdresser and makeup artist to handle their glam on their wedding morning. We recommend doing this so that you can sit back and enjoy yourself while someone else ensures you look your best.

However,  you should not leave it until the wedding day to discover whether or not you like the hair stylist and makeup artist in question. This is what wedding beauty trials are for. This gives you the ability to trial different looks so that you can decide on the best one for your special day. Moreover, if for some reason you do not like the hair stylist or wedding makeup artist in question, you will have plenty of time to find a different glam squad instead. After all, you should not have to compromise on your wedding day.

Still, it is vital to recognise that a trial is exactly that; a trial! Do not get upset or worried if you do not like the first hairstyle or makeup suggestion that is mentioned. Remember, the beautician and hair stylist are using this opportunity to get to know you as well so that they can determine what sort of look you want and get onto the same page as you ahead of your big day.

When you are looking for the ideal glam squad for your wedding day, make sure you take a look at images from brides they have beautified in the past. This will help you to get an idea of what to expect and whether or not their looks fit in with what you had in mind. It is also a good idea to take the time to read reviews that have been left by other people as well. After all, you want to make sure that the person in question is professional, friendly, and that they will arrive on time on your big day.

Final words on your wedding glam

So there you have it: everything you need to know about getting your wedding glam right. We hope that the tips and advice that we have provided you with above will help you when it comes to looking your very best on your wedding day. While you can go down the traditional route or look online for inspiration, it is important to remember that your wedding is all about you, and so it is vital to be true to yourself.

Make Working From Home Work For You

Your company may have taken the difficult decision to work from home indefinitely. If this is the case then you need to make sure you are prepared for this. It can seem daunting and a lonely prospect, especially if you are used to being surrounded by other employees.

Working from home may come easy to you, it could fit into your lifestyle better than working in an office. You don’t know until you try.

Find A Space

The first step in working from home is to find a suitable place within your home to work. This needs to be somewhere that you can get complete quiet and focus. It might be a spare room or a setup within an existing room. You might decide to convert your spare room into an office, this will be very handy as it means you can just shut the door at the end of the day. If you don’t have any spare room available to work then you can make it work, don’t panic. You might decide to use your kitchen or dining room table. If so, make sure you shut down and put everything away at the end of the day. This is so you can transition from work mode to home mode.

Get The Right Equipment

When it comes to working from home you need to make sure you have all the right equipment. You might have a job that involves a lot of files, if you only have hard copies then you will need somewhere to store these. If they are confidential files then you may need to invest in a lockable filing cabinet to store them in. You will also need to make sure you are comfortable, as working at a desk for eight hours can be a strain on your body.

Your business might let you order some office furniture seeing as they decided their staff would work from home. If this is the case then you will need a desk and a chair. You should ensure the chair has a high back that is adjustable to make sure there is no pressure put on your back or arms while typing. You may also be able to bring your laptop or PC home from the office to use at home, if so then this will be a lot easier to use as it will have all existing programmes on it. If not, there are second-hand laptops that you can buy, or you can use an existing one you have at home. Be sure to wipe it clean before you start using it. You can do it at home yourself or take it to a professional to service for you.

 Limit Distractions

Finally, when you work from home you will find yourself faced with many distractions. These can come in the form of the postman knocking on the door, or your own children running around the place. You must alert those close to you that you are working from home and can’t be disturbed. If you are located in a room then you might want to get a sign for the door to specify you are working. If you are located in the kitchen or dining room then a gentle reminder when you start work to be quiet will help.

6 Tips on Cryptocurrency and Why You Should Invest Your Money

The world has changed a lot during the past thirty years. With the growth of social media, the decline of high streets as the place to shop and increase in online shopping and conducting work and business on the internet, people are now considering what to do with their money.

Millennials are learning the best options for investing and growing their savings in a world where traditional banks are not always the better option for the millennial generation and younger people. High street banks no longer offer decent incentives to invest money in their savings accounts. Young people have less money to spend and want to invest wisely, perhaps helping them to buy a house or a car in the future. Here are 6 tips on why cryptocurrency is worth investing in, and why:

What is Cryptocurrency and why should I invest in it?

  • What is Cryptocurrency and why should I invest in it? Simply put, cryptocurrency is a digital coin. Imagine you have $1 USD or £1 GBP in your hand, and you want to put it in a money box to save. You could spend it online and  invest and profit from your Crypto, saving it in a digital money box on the internet. Many people believe that cryptocurrency could eventually replace physical money now that more consumers are buying products and services online. Think about how many times you pay for items using your bank card. Do you even spend “hard cash” these days? Cryptocurrency is just another version of money, and some businesses accept it as payment alongside traditional cash or debit card options.
  • Listen to podcasts for advice about money management and to learn about the cryptocurrency market. There are many different forms of cryptocurrency so it’s a good idea to learn about them before deciding which ones to invest your money in. Try the podcast ‘What Bitcoin Did’ or ‘Crypto 101.’ You can listen to these and others from experienced financial advisors that share their knowledge and experience with investing money and choosing which cryptocurrency to buy.
  • Watch educational videos on YouTube or Amazon Prime. Here is one channel to get you started: Money Talks. Our channel features content about cryptocurrency, business, the economy, and anything that can improve your financial education. We do our best to create content that is educational, informative, and entertaining. These videos are useful to watch when you have a spare ten minutes, and you can replay the parts that you might struggle with, or write down notes as you go along, to educate yourself on the importance of investing and choosing cryptocurrency.
  • Read books and articles about cryptocurrency and investing. There are lots of businesspeople who share their knowledge and wisdom about cryptocurrency. One such influencer is Michael Saylor who is a CEO and founder of digital intelligence company Micro Strategy. This guy knows what he is talking about! Learn from his experience and take what you need to go forward and grow your investments as you aim high.
  •  Look at your finances and see what improvements you can make. Maybe you have a savings account with a traditional high street bank, but it is not growing in the way that you would like. Banks can no longer offer good rates of interest so our money sits there doing nothing when it could be doubling, tripling, quadrupling and more in another location. Some people now have their pension set up in a stocks and shares product. This means that they invest a small amount of money each month into their pension account, and the company that hold it will invest that money into shares of other companies. This money will fluctuate as time goes on, but when the shares grow to a decent amount, the pay-out will come back to you. Cryptocurrency can work in just the same way, and you can invest in different cryptocurrency markets. You could even explore Bitcoin mining when you learn a bit more about the industry. There are lots of possibilities.
  •  Be open minded! It is natural to feel sceptical about all of this. Yes, we know that billionaire CEOs are investing in cryptocurrency and making lots of money in return. But they had a starting point, didn’t they, something way out the league of regular people. Well, they are regular people just like us. Why shouldn’t we give cryptocurrency a chance? Banks were created at some point in history, and someone invented coins and cash along the way. Cryptocurrency is the 21st century version of cash, and it can only grow as the years progress.
