Witchy Wednesday: When a Reiki Retreat Turns into a Ghostly Adventure

There’s something about North Wales that always stirs my witchy senses. Maybe it’s the ancient landscape, or the way history clings to every stone wall and shadowed copse of trees. Or maybe it’s just me, forever slipping between Reiki Master and ghost hunter depending on which way the wind blows.

Either way, as soon as I turned off the main road and approached our retreat venue, that familiar tingle crept up my spine… and I knew the spirits were waiting.

Witchy Wednesday: When a Reiki Retreat Turns into a Ghostly Adventure

When a Reiki Retreat Turns into a Ghostly Adventure

I was there for a peaceful weekend of healing energy with my lovely Reiki ladies—time to breathe, connect, meditate, and rest. But the house was only a short drive from Bodelwyddan Castle, where I had one of the most intense paranormal investigations of my life nearly twenty years ago. That whole region is steeped in memory for me: old manor houses, wooded lanes, and locations where I’ve stood in the dark with EMF meters and shivers of anticipation. So perhaps it’s no surprise that the moment I stepped out of the car, something shifted. I felt… home.

Haunted Before We Even Unpacked

The retreat house itself was a former nursing home, still very much looking the part—with wide corridors, locked doors from old staff rooms, and an abandoned Nurse’s office at the end of the first-floor hallway that did absolutely nothing to calm anyone’s imagination. Half the building was closed off and sublet to another business, so although we could hear movement behind interior doors, we never actually saw who (or what) was there.

One of my Reiki friends is terrified of ghosts (which always amuses me because she signed up for a retreat with me of all people!). She was decidedly unimpressed when the energy of the place made itself known before we even settled in. Me? I was delighted. Of course.

We discovered very quickly that the building was most definitely haunted—though not in a threatening or heavy way. More like layers of former residents, family members, nurses, and servants who simply… never left. And why should they? It was their home long before it became ours for the weekend.

Spirit Fingers, Gentle Tickles & Circle Work Energy

During meditations and circle work, several of us felt ghostly touches—little flicks, tickles, and brushes along our arms, legs, or shoulders. Not intrusive, not cold, just curious. A warm, playful energy circled the group whenever we connected deeply.

One presence in particular stands out: a little girl.

I sensed her during one of our standing self-care meditations. She felt about two or three years old, early 1900s perhaps—sweet, quiet, and shy at first. Then she reached for my hand. The energy was so gentle and so childlike that I instinctively shifted into “mum mode,” letting her nestle close if that made her feel safe.

After a while she skipped away, drifting across the room to one of the other ladies. We didn’t speak about it openly at first, but later several of us confessed to feeling a small hand or a light touch. That confirmed it for me: she was there, and she was comfortable with us.

The Upstairs… A Very Different Vibe

While my room on the ground floor was peaceful (and I had the deepest sleep I’ve had in months!), the first-floor bedrooms told a different story. Some of the ladies struggled to rest, feeling watched or unsettled—not frightened exactly, but restless.

The energy upstairs was heavier, more stagnant, almost like the building remembered routines, footsteps, and midnight rounds. The abandoned Nurse’s office didn’t help. And the locked interior doors leading to the sublet rooms created a sense of unseen presence just out of reach.

We suspect there may be a live-in caretaker somewhere on site. Or I may have seen a ghost through the window. Honestly, it could have gone either way.

A Retreat with a Paranormal Twist

Now, our Reiki teacher has firmly announced that we will not be returning to this venue (and after the first-floor experiences, the group wholeheartedly agrees!). It simply wasn’t suitable for the kind of retreat we intended. It looked beautiful online—one of those holiday-home listings that promises a warm, modern escape. In reality, it felt like we had stepped back in time, into a space still humming with old energy and memories.

But for me? It felt like the perfect blend of peaceful Reiki practice and paranormal adventure. I loved the soft whispers of the past, the playful spirit child, and the sense that we were being warmly observed by former residents who were delighted to have visitors again.

This Witchy Wednesday, I honour that experience—the blending of light and shadow, healing and haunting, past and present. Sometimes the most magical energy finds us in the most unexpected places.

And of course, the witch in me is already plotting a return to Bodelwyddan Castle…

🪶 Witchy Wednesday: Reiki Energy and Ancient Walls at Plas Coch

There is something very special about working with Reiki in a house that has stood for more than three hundred years. Last weekend, I attended a Reiki retreat with my teacher and fellow students at Plas Coch in St Asaph, North Wales — a beautiful red-brick manor that dates back to 1667. The name means “Red Hall” in Welsh, and its warm tones seem to glow even brighter when filled with Reiki energy.

As soon as we arrived, I felt the calm of the land settle around us. The air here is still, yet alive — a balance between the old and the new. We are surrounded by soft hills, ancient trees, and the gentle murmur of the River Elwy nearby. Inside, the creak of floorboards and the scent of wood polish remind us that generations have passed through these rooms before us.

Witchy Wednesday: Reiki Energy and Ancient Walls at Plas Coch

Reiki Energy and Ancient Walls at Plas Coch

During our meditations and group Reiki sessions, I could sense the house responding to our energy. It was as if the walls themselves sighed with relief, enjoying the renewal of loving, healing vibration after centuries of human experience. Some of us noticed subtle flickers of light or gentle temperature changes — natural for Reiki, but perhaps also a sign that Plas Coch’s resident spirits were curious about our work!

I find it deeply comforting to know that the universal life force energy we channel through Reiki transcends time. Whether we are in a modern apartment, a woodland glade, or a centuries-old manor house, Reiki harmonises with all that is. It flows through stone and timber just as easily as it flows through us.

As our retreat continued, I felt a deep sense of connection — to the Earth, to my companions, and to the unseen layers of history that surround us. Plas Coch reminds me that healing energy never fades; it only waits for us to remember how to listen.

✨ Closing Thought

If you ever find yourself in an ancient place, take a moment to breathe deeply, open your palms, and feel what lingers in the air. You might discover that the energy of the past is simply waiting to meet you halfway. 🌿

Free for all Friday: Stepping Into Christmas with Crafty Spirit!

Can you feel it? The festive season is tiptoeing closer, and I’m already humming Christmas tunes at work!

This week the Christmas playlist began in the discount store where I work as a store assistant, and let’s just say—I’ve decided to Step Into Christmas! (If you know which store I’m talking about, drop your guess in the comments—the clue is in the song!)

Free for all Friday: Stepping Into Christmas with Crafty Spirit! 🎄✨

Stepping Into Christmas with Crafty Spirit!

Last weekend I enjoyed a fabulous day out at the Creative Crafts Show at the NEC in Birmingham with my mum and my daughters. We somehow accidentally wandered into the Christmas Gifts Show and were completely swallowed up by tinsel, treats, and twinkling lights! It was a magical surprise. We browsed endless craft stalls, admired the incredible 3D printers, marvelled at the art installations, and picked up plenty of ideas for future projects. I stocked up on new paper supplies for my scrapbooks and treated myself to a few much-needed tools.

Christmas was everywhere at the show—festive yarn, sparkling decorations, handmade gifts, and gorgeous wrapping inspiration. The creative energy was contagious, and it inspired me to add a little personal touch to my own festive preparations this year.

✨ Unique Themes for Every Christmas Spirit

If, like me, you love adding handmade touches to your holiday season, personalised Christmas stamps are a beautiful and practical choice. These little treasures from Stamps Design 4U make every card, tag, and parcel feel extra special. Each stamp impression shows care and creativity, turning an ordinary card into something memorable.

They’re perfect for anyone who sends out lots of cards each year—once you have your own stamp, you can use it again and again, saving time while keeping each message personal. Even better, these stamps can become part of your family tradition, giving your festive post that same warm, familiar touch every year.

In our digital world, a hand-stamped card feels genuine and heartfelt. It’s a lovely way to show that you’ve put thought and love into every detail.

Personal Handmade Magic

So this weekend, as I sip my hot chocolate and plan my next batch of Christmas crafts, I’ll be thinking about all the little touches that make the season shine. Whether you’re creating cards, wrapping gifts, or decorating your home—let’s bring back that personal, handmade magic!

Witchy Wednesday: Reflecting Under the November Full Moon 🌕✨

Another turn of the wheel, another full moon rising — and what a year it has been!

As we step into the dark half of the year, I find myself craving quiet, introspection, and a little moonlit magic.

Reflecting Under the November Full Moon Witchy Wednesday pagan family pagan mom at SpookyMrsGreen.com spooky family lifestyle blog.
Witchy Wednesday: Reflecting Under the November Full Moon 🌕✨

Reflecting Under the November Full Moon

This November full moon is the perfect time for rest and renewal. After months of activity, travel, and connection, I feel ready to pause and honour the lessons I’ve gathered along the way. The energy of this moon feels deeply grounding — it calls us to look inward, to release what no longer serves us, and to nurture what truly matters.

For me, that means stepping back from the noise, lighting a few candles, and reconnecting with the witch within. It means honouring myself for all that I’ve achieved this year, even the small things that might have gone unnoticed in the rush of life.

Do you feel the same?

If you feel the same pull, here are a few gentle ways to work with the November full moon energy this week:

🌕 Reflect and release: Write down what you’ve carried this year that feels heavy or complete. Burn the list safely or bury it beneath the earth, symbolising release and closure.

🌿 Ground and centre: Work with earthy crystals like smoky quartz, hematite, or obsidian. Sit in meditation, feel your connection to the earth, and let the moonlight cleanse your energy.

🕯️ Honour yourself: Create a small ritual of self-appreciation. Light a candle, speak your own name aloud, and thank yourself for surviving, striving, and growing. You are your own magic.

💫 Dream and prepare: Use this quiet lunar energy to dream of what comes next. The dark months ahead are perfect for planning, spell weaving, and tending the seeds of your next transformation.

Beauty and Power in Darkness

As the November full moon shines bright, remember that even in darkness, there is beauty and power. Rest if you need to. Dream if you wish. And never forget — the witch’s light always shines within.

Blessed full moon, my friends. 🌕💜

Mummy Monday: The Dad Game Night Contract

Family game nights are back on the agenda this November as we settle into cosy evenings and festive fun. During our recent half-term break, my youngest daughter surprised us all with her creativity and humour — she wrote an official “Dad Game Night Contract” to keep the peace (and the laughter!) flowing. It turned our regular family competition into a night to remember!

From The Logo Game to Scream and Spot the Intro, there was plenty of fun, laughter, and a few dramatic defeats. Here’s how our family game night turned into one of our favourite holiday memories.

Colourful image of the Logo board game, Spot the Intro game and Scream the game for Mummy Monday blog post The Dad Game Night Contract at SpookyMrsGreen.com spooky family lifestyle blog.
Mummy Monday: The Dad Game Night Contract

The Dad Game Night Contract

Half-term holidays are always a bit chaotic in our house, but this October my youngest daughter outdid herself with a stroke of comic genius. In preparation for our family game night, she decided to create an official contract for her dad — complete with signature lines and a rule that if he got grumpy, the opposing team would move one step closer to victory! She even made him sign it before we began, and I have to say, watching her deliver the document with a serious face was absolutely hilarious. Even he had to smile at her initiative (and admit defeat before the first dice roll!).

We kicked off with The Logo Game, where I claimed victory — clearly, years of supermarket runs and online shopping have given me an edge when it comes to brand knowledge. Then came Scream, a fast-paced horror-themed app game that had us all jumping and laughing (and, ultimately, all dying!). Dad struggled with the tech element — perhaps that contract should have included a “no app complaints” clause! Finally, we finished with Spot the Intro, and this was Dad’s moment to shine. Being a musician, he easily outplayed us all, guessing every song before the rest of us had a chance.

Precious Moments

These little moments are so precious. Family game night has become an important ritual for our girls, giving us time together away from screens and distractions. With Dad working long hours most days, it’s often the only chance they get to spend proper quality time with him — and if that means enforcing a “No Grumps” clause, so be it!

Now that we’re heading into November, the girls are already making their Christmas wish list of new games to add to our growing collection. I can’t wait to see what they choose next — though I suspect Dad may be a bit wary of signing any more contracts before we start playing!

Free for All Friday: A Cursed Collection of Haunted Dolls by Fiona Dodwell – Review

As the Halloween season reaches its peak and the veil between worlds grows thin, it feels only fitting to spend some time in the company of our favourite haunted playthings… and I’m not talking about my own dolls this time!

This week, I’m thrilled to share my review of A Cursed Collection of Haunted Dolls by fellow paranormal investigator and author Fiona Dodwell.

Book cover for A Cursed Collection of Haunted Dolls by Fiona Dodwell reviewed by paranormal author Catherine Green at SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog.
Free for All Friday: A Cursed Collection of Haunted Dolls by Fiona Dodwell – Review 🎃 🕯️

My Review

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was a delightful distraction from the mundane day-to-day as I delved into the eerie world of famous haunted dolls from history. Fiona takes us on a fascinating journey through the origins of well-known urban myths, spooky legends, and even shares a few ghost stories inspired by dolls themselves.

The book strikes a perfect balance between research and storytelling — lighthearted yet chilling, and packed with paranormal trivia that will keep you turning the pages long into the night. Fiona’s voice feels warm and familiar, like chatting with a fellow investigator over a cup of tea after a night of ghost hunting. Her enthusiasm for the subject shines through every chapter, and her personal insight gives this book a truly human (and spooky) touch.

Whether you’re a collector, a paranormal enthusiast, or simply a fan of haunted tales, this book offers the perfect Halloween treat. I loved learning about both the infamous dolls (hello, Robert and Annabelle!) and some that were new to me, like Mandy and Okiku. It’s the kind of book that will have you side-eyeing your toy shelf for days afterwards… in the best possible way!

A Cursed Collection of Haunted Dolls is a delightfully upbeat yet spine-tingling read — ideal for Halloween and the long, dark winter nights to come.

About the Book

A Cursed Collection of Haunted Dolls by Fiona Dodwell
Silent Stares and Malevolent Whispers from Possessed Dolls

Robert. Annabelle. Peggy. The very names of these dolls can strike fear into your heart. Fiona presents a comprehensive collection of true-life cases of haunted dolls, including lesser-known ones such as Mandy and Okiku. She also explores the killer dolls that have inspired endless horror movies and books. To chill your spine even further, Fiona shares interviews with Child’s Play writer and director Don Mancini, actress Jennifer Tilly, Patti Negri of Ghost Adventures, Jayne Harris of Help! My House Is Haunted, and many more.

Creepy, addictive, and meticulously researched, this book takes paranormal enthusiasts on a thrilling journey into the dark and fascinating world of haunted dolls.

Witchy Wednesday: The Ancestors Whisper at Hallam Mill

Samhain is almost upon us, dear readers, and I can feel the ancestral pull growing stronger with every flicker of candlelight.

This is the season when the veil between worlds becomes whisper-thin, when the spirits draw close to offer guidance, wisdom, and perhaps a little mischief.

Witchy Wednesday: The Ancestors Whisper at Hallam Mill 🌙✨

The Ancestors Whisper at Hallam Mill

Last weekend, my ghostie girlies and I joined our friends, the Paranormal Penny Pinchers, for a séance at the legendary Hallam Mill in Stockport — one of those places where the atmosphere hums with unseen energy the moment you step inside. We went expecting to meet the resident ghosts that so many investigators have reported before us. But as is often the way with the spirit world, the evening took an unexpected turn…

When the lights dimmed and our circle began, the energy shifted dramatically. Instead of the building’s usual spectral tenants, a presence stepped forward that felt deeply personal — familiar, even. As we worked with our dowsing rods and spirit boxes, a voice came through that seemed to echo straight through my bones. I can’t explain it, but I knew this spirit wasn’t a stranger.

Ancestor from my Mother’s Side

The words were few, the sensations intense. My heart raced, and a sudden chill swept over me, yet I felt comforted rather than afraid. It seems that my visitor might be an ancestor from my mother’s side, a guide reaching through the veil to remind me of who I am and where I come from. There’s research to be done — names, old family stories, perhaps even a forgotten photograph tucked away in a dusty album.

My ghostie girlies were as intrigued as I was, watching the EMF meter flicker with excitement as our unseen guest lingered. We ended the session with gratitude, leaving offerings of love and light for all the spirits who joined us that night.

Prepare for Samhain

Now, as I prepare for Samhain and the family’s Halloween celebrations — costumes, sweets, and laughter aplenty — I also make time for quiet reflection. I’ll light a candle for my ancestors, especially the mysterious guide who made themselves known at Hallam Mill.

Perhaps they’ll visit again when the veil opens fully on All Hallows’ Eve.

Blessed be, and may your own spirit guides walk beside you this Samhain. 🌙✨
