My Review of “Mortal Creatures of the Dead” by Simon Young

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, and I was excited to read an alternative werewolf story set in medieval Russia. Honestly, I was a little disappointed with the book. It did not feel authentically Russian to read and could have been set in medieval England, apart from the names of towns. I found it difficult to connect with the characters, but I did appreciate the strong female lead, and of course the werewolf story was fun. Oh, and I think my favourite character was the dog, Tsar! If you like classic monster stories, then I think you will enjoy this book.

About the Book

Although only a young woman Katherine is becoming a professional in her trade – hunting werewolves. The year is 1642. It’s cold in Russia and Royal Russian Lycanthropes are a problem. Desperate people pay highly for her skills and ferocity. She is rarely out of work. With her father injured she took on the last assignment alone, obsessed with wiping them out armed only with her wits, her hound, Tsar, and a ton of weapons. She has not killed them all yet. But then…

Lost Seaside Memories Many Modern Kids haven’t Experienced

As many as 66 percent of the nation agree, a traditional day out at the seaside is a British institution, while nine in ten have fond memories of the beach from their childhoods. Yet, according to a new study of 2,000 parents by Cadbury Flake 99, as many as one in ten modern kids have never been to the seaside, while seven in ten mums and dads say they hardly ever take their kids to the beach. 

Among the classic childhood memories which could be lost for future generations, include walks along the pier (47 percent), digging massive holes in the sand (35 percent) and burying your mum or dad in the sand (13 percent). 

Souvenir shops (17 percent), donkey rides (20 percent) and playing  the arcades (41 percent) also made the list of most nostalgic memories modern kids are missing out on. 

Other memories include games of cricket on the beach (10 percent), men in socks and sandals (10 percent), putting your windbreaker up in the wind (9 percent) and frantically running away from seagulls (11 percent).

Yet half (51 percent) of modern parents wish they had more time to take their kids for some fresh sea air, according to the poll.

Cadbury Flake 99 is stepping in this August, to ensure families get their seaside fix, by partnering with First Bus to create two new bus routes that will run across the weekends of 10/11 and 17/18 August.

#WitchyWednesday: Introduction to Crystal Healing – Which Stones to Start With

Welcome back to another enchanting #WitchyWednesday on SpookyMrsGreen.com! Today, we’re diving into the mystical world of crystal healing, a practice that has been a cornerstone of my spiritual journey for almost twenty years.

Crystals have been my companions through thick and thin, aiding in alleviating chronic pain, boosting self-confidence, and lifting my spirits during low times. Not to mention, their vibrant, sparkling presence adds a touch of magic to my home decor.

The Basics of Crystal Healing

Crystal healing is an ancient practice that harnesses the energy of crystals and gemstones to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Each crystal carries its unique vibration and frequency, which can interact with our own energy fields to help balance and heal. Whether you’re dealing with stress, seeking emotional clarity, or simply looking to bring more positivity into your life, there’s a crystal that can support you on your journey.

To get started with crystal healing, it’s essential to understand a few key principles:

1. Intention: Your thoughts and intentions play a crucial role in crystal healing. When you choose a crystal, set a clear intention for what you hope to achieve. When I am purchasing a crystal, I like to hold my hand above the selection and allow the energy to guide my hand to the crystal that I need to select. It isn’t always the shiniest, cleanest looking crystal that you need to work with!

2. Cleansing: Crystals absorb energy from their surroundings, so it’s important to cleanse them regularly. Methods include running them under water, placing them in sunlight or moonlight, or using smudging techniques with sage. I like to put them outside during a thunderstorm so they get a good cleanse, but that happens rarely in my corner of the UK. We have plenty of rain to do the job though.

3. Programming: After cleansing, hold your crystal and focus on your intention. This helps to “program” the crystal with your specific needs. Think about the challenges you are working to overcome, or maybe a situation that you need to resolve, and the crystal will pick up on that energy and connect with you.

4. Placement: You can carry crystals with you, place them in your home, or even wear them as jewellery to keep their energy close. I like to place them near my computer when I’m working, sometimes I will put them in the car, and I place them around the house to balance the energies of my family members.

Beginner Stones: Where to Start

When starting your journey with crystals, it’s best to begin with stones that are versatile and easy to work with. Here are a few recommendations:

1. Clear Quartz

Known as the “master healer,” clear quartz is incredibly versatile. It can be used for any condition and is known to amplify the energy of other crystals. Clear quartz helps to balance and harmonize your energy, bringing clarity and focus. I have lots of clear quartz in my house!

2. Amethyst

Amethyst is a beautiful purple stone that promotes calmness, balance, and peace. It’s excellent for meditation and helps to protect against negative energy. Amethyst can also aid in relieving stress and anxiety, making it a perfect companion for those challenging days. I have a beautiful amethyst lamp in my living room, and I love to hold my hands over it for an energy boost when I feel the need.

3. Rose Quartz

Rose quartz is the stone of unconditional love. It opens the heart chakra and promotes self-love, compassion, and emotional healing. This gentle pink stone is ideal for those seeking to enhance their relationships and foster a deeper connection with themselves. I am currently working with rose quartz to heal ancestral wounds relating to women. Its feminine energy is potent and cannot be underestimated.

4. Black Tourmaline

Black tourmaline is a powerful protective stone. It shields against negative energy, electromagnetic radiation, and psychic attacks. It’s a grounding stone that helps to bring a sense of stability and security. This is a good stone to keep near your computer and any devices that you regularly use.

My Favourite Crystals: A Personal Touch

Over the years, I have developed a deep connection with several crystals that have become my favourites. Let me introduce you to them:

Tigers Eye

Tigers Eye is a striking stone known for its bands of golden and brown hues. It’s a stone of protection and grounding, helping to release fear and anxiety. Tigers Eye enhances courage, strength, and personal power, making it an excellent stone for boosting self-confidence and self-esteem.

Clear Quartz

As mentioned earlier, clear quartz is a must-have in any crystal collection. Its ability to amplify energy and intentions makes it a powerful tool for manifesting your desires and enhancing your spiritual practice.

Amethyst

Amethyst’s calming and protective properties have been a constant source of comfort for me. Its soothing energy helps to alleviate stress and anxiety, while also promoting spiritual growth and intuition.

Red Jasper

Red jasper is a vibrant, earthy stone that provides strength and stamina. It’s known as a stone of endurance and nurturing, offering support during times of stress and providing a sense of stability. Red jasper also helps to stimulate creativity and bring your ideas to fruition. I worked with red jasper shortly before I got pregnant with my first child. Coincidence? I leave it with you to ponder, but I have my answer!

Get Enough Sleep

One of the most important things you can do for your health is get enough sleep. This isn’t just about the quantity but the quality as well. For example, if you are staying in bed for the recommended time of six to eight hours but laying awake or tossing and turning for hours then this isn’t great sleep. You need to achieve solid sleep which means staying asleep for at least six hours to feel recharged. While you’re sleeping, your mind and body are busy repairing broken cells and muscles from previous days. It also gives your brain a moment to itself to chill out. If you are always getting broken sleep then this can’t be achieved and you will feel exhausted and irritable. 

Drink Enough Fluid

Water is also essential for great health. You may already know that you need to be drinking about eight glasses or two litres of water each day to achieve the optimum hydration levels. Throughout the day your body is losing water through sweat, breathing, and visiting the bathroom. You should be replacing this water, that’s why you should be aiming for those eight glasses. If you struggle with this then it may be worth investing in a special water bottle that specifies times you should be drinking and how much. 

Head Outside

Another thing you can do is head outside for some fresh air. It isn’t great for your health to be cooped up inside all the time. If you work from home then it can be tempting to finish work for the day and sit in front of the tv. However, if you went for a walk then this would give you a mental break from your surroundings. Alternatively, you could incorporate some exercise and go for a run in your local area or even park. Grab a bunch of friends and hit the town for some brunch, it doesn’t matter what you are doing as long as you are happy and enjoying it. When you have a great time, so does your mind and body. 

Change Your Diet

Take Supplements 

Finally, if you are not getting the right level of vitamins and nutrients you need from your diet then it might be worth looking into supplements. It might be helpful to take a multivitamin to ensure your body is getting everything it needs to function. If you need some extra help relaxing and unwinding during the day or at bedtime then it might be an idea to look into cbd oil.
