#WitchyWednesday: Celebrating Lammas – The First Harvest Festival

Greetings, dear readers! As the wheel of the year turns, we find ourselves at Lammas, the First Harvest Festival. This sacred sabbat, falling on August 1st, marks the midpoint between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox. It’s a time to celebrate abundance, gratitude, and the bounties of Mother Earth.

Today, I’m excited to share some ideas and rituals for celebrating Lammas with you, especially as it’s extra special because it’s also my younger daughter’s birthday! Let’s dive into the magic and joy of Lammas.

Understanding Lammas

Lammas, also known as Lughnasadh, is a festival dedicated to the Celtic god Lugh, the god of light and craftsmanship. The name “Lammas” comes from the Old English “hlaf-mas,” meaning “loaf mass,” signifying the first wheat harvest of the season. Traditionally, people would bake a loaf of bread from the first grains and offer it as a token of thanks.

Ways to Celebrate Lammas

1. Baking Bread:

What better way to honour Lammas than by baking your own bread? This simple act connects us to the age-old tradition of celebrating the first harvest. You can make a classic wheat loaf or try something different like a sweet cornbread or a hearty rye. As you knead the dough, infuse it with your intentions and gratitude for the harvest.

2. Harvest Feast:

Celebrate with a meal that highlights the season’s bounty. Include fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains. A cornucopia centerpiece, filled with apples, berries, corn, and squashes, symbolizes the abundance of the harvest. Invite friends and family to join in, and make it a joyful, communal affair.

3. Gratitude Ritual:

Create a gratitude ritual to give thanks for the abundance in your life. Gather some natural items like leaves, flowers, and stones. Arrange them in a circle and light a candle in the center. As you meditate, reflect on the blessings you’ve received and set intentions for the upcoming season.

4. Nature Walk and Foraging:

Take a walk in nature to connect with the earth. Bring a basket and forage for wildflowers, herbs, and berries. These can be used to decorate your altar or as ingredients in your Lammas feast. This activity is also a wonderful way to teach children about the importance of respecting and honouring nature.

5. Crafting Corn Dollies:

Crafting corn dollies is a traditional Lammas activity. These small, symbolic figures made from straw or corn husks represent fertility and the spirit of the harvest. Create your own corn dolly and place it on your altar or in your home as a symbol of protection and abundance.

6. Birthday Magic:

Since Lammas coincides with my younger daughter’s birthday, we’ll be incorporating birthday magic into our celebrations. I could make a special Lammas-themed birthday cake, perhaps a honey cake or a fruit tart, adorned with seasonal fruits and flowers, but since I’m not a domestic goddess, I’ll go with a store bought one. Besides, she doesn’t like honey or fruit cake. We will celebrate Lammas in our own special way, with love and laughter at home. It’s a wonderful way to blend the celebration of the harvest with the joy of her birthday.

Incorporating Children in Lammas Celebrations

Including children in Lammas festivities can be both fun and educational. Here are some kid-friendly activities:

– Storytelling: Share myths and legends about Lugh, the Celtic god of light.

– Crafting: Create simple crafts like leaf rubbings, nature collages, or sun catchers using items found during your nature walk.

– Cooking: Involve them in baking bread or preparing the feast, teaching them about the ingredients and their significance.

Pause and appreciate the abundance in our lives

Lammas is a beautiful reminder to pause and appreciate the abundance in our lives. Whether through baking, feasting, crafting, or simply spending time in nature, there are countless ways to celebrate this first harvest festival. As we honour the earth’s bounty, let’s also take a moment to express our gratitude and set positive intentions for the seasons to come.

Wishing you all a blessed Lammas and a magical #WitchyWednesday!

Our Family Visit to the National Justice Museum

Are you interested in true crime stories and the workings of our justice system? Have you explored the National Justice Museum in Nottingham, UK? My family and I recently spent the day there at the request of our elder daughter when she saw a TikTok promoting the museum. It looked interesting, so we put it in our diary.

Read my review of a family day out to the National Justice Museum in Nottingham, UK.

Our family recently visited the National Justice Museum in Nottingham and had an incredible experience learning about the legal system and history. Review of the National Justice Museum

This place was fascinating! I was interested to visit since I love museums, and our family enjoy visiting different locations to learn about our social history. The National Justice Museum is certainly a fun family day out, despite the serious nature of its purpose. I know we should take crime seriously, but this museum manages to convey the serious and horrific nature of the justice system throughout British history while still providing an entertaining day out for the family.

My children are aged 13 and 10 and they both enjoyed their day at the museum. Some parts of it were sobering, and they were both struck by the exhibition about youth justice in the US and the stories we learned about young people incarcerated for life for crimes they committed as children. My younger daughter was especially upset to learn about young women having their babies in prison and I think it was important for both my girls to see what happens behind bars.

Court is in Session

Soon after we arrived at the National Justice Museum we were taken to court. They have a magnificent Victorian Court Room with a judge and a prosecutor that re-enact cases from historical records. My husband was called as a witness to a crime and had to stand up for the accused, another visitor to the museum, which we all found hilarious! Later that day my daughters and I returned to the court room, and I was called as a witness to prosecute the accused. It was a great way to learn about how justice was served in the old days, and my daughters came home and immediately set up their own court room in our living room and began holding trials based on what they had learned.

We were invited to walk down into the jail directly from the court room as so many prisoners had done in previous years, which was a strange experience. And then we entered the prison. We saw a fascinating display of case reports from different time periods, there were exhibitions of shackles and various implements that were used on prisoners, and a mixture of information boards and interactive displays. We also had the opportunity to stand in the stocks and take photos.

Women in Prison

As we walked through the prison, we could enter cells and see how they were furnished during past decades. There was a lot of information about famous crimes, the criminals involved, and the prosecutors, magistrates and prison reformers that have shaped our justice system over the years. I will add that there were a few prominent women prison reformers in British history, it wasn’t just the men running the show, but I think it was men that dominated the courtroom for a few centuries. There was a lot to take in and I couldn’t read all of the information as my children’s attention span didn’t last that long, but I think my husband made a good go of it while we went off exploring.

Below ground you can explore the medieval prison cells and there is an oubliette right in the centre of Nottingham, which I thought was incredible. We didn’t spend a lot of time down there as my younger daughter found it scary, but I was enthralled by the energy of the place and would have spent longer exploring if I was on my own. There are other cells to explore, including a debtors’ prison, the women’s quarters, laundry room, and other exhibitions. You can also pose for photos in a small room set up for the purpose at the turn of the century when photography was born. And outside in the yard you can view the gallows and see grave stones preserved from prisoners that were hanged in years past.

Transportation is in Order

There was a fascinating exhibition describing the process of transportation to Australia that was a popular form of punishment in the old days. You can walk through the rooms of a ship and learn about what food the prisoners were given, how they were treated on that long sea voyage, and how the crew and upper-class travellers would have found the journey. As we walked through the ship, we could feel it moving as though it were on the water, which I thought was a brilliant effect and very realistic. I did find it a bit disorientating, however, and couldn’t spend too long in there before I began to feel ill.

We learned a bit about what life was like in the colonies for the prisoners, including the work that they were forced to do, the conditions in which they lived, and what life was like for the people tasked with overseeing their punishment and making a new life in a strange country. I was sad to learn about animals that were made extinct by humans as a result of transportation, and I think this affected my children as well.

Learning about Forensic Investigation

Upstairs in the main rooms of the National Justice Museum we explored an exhibition about the birth of forensics. You can read about the scientists and police detectives that developed the criminal investigation process, read some stories from around the time of these developments, and interact with the displays. My younger daughter really liked the large autopsy table on which you can explore autopsies from previous murder cases to see how forensic science helped to solve the murder. It is basically a giant tablet made to look like an autopsy table and is in impressive piece of kit. I think it is a great educational device for our Gen X and Gen A kids.

We Highly Recommend the National Justice Museum

My family and I certainly recommend the National Justice Museum, although I will say that it might be tricky for disabled people to navigate. You can visit the upstairs exhibition easily enough and there is a lift, but some areas are uneven and dark. The café is a lovely venue and caters well for vegetarians, for which I was happy. It is an inclusive workplace, part of a scheme employing people that might otherwise struggle to find employment, and on a personal level my husband thought that this was a very good idea. We paid a fee for tickets to visit the museum, but we got a family ticket and I think it provided excellent value for money because we spent the whole day there, we learned a lot, and there were lots of opportunities for interaction and immersive learning. My daughters came home full of new information, and I think they might consider looking at the justice system as a career option as they progress through school.

Have you visited the National Justice Museum? What do you think of it? Or have you visited a similar museum in your local area? Please tell me in the comments. Happy #MummyMonday, my friends!

My Review of “Mortal Creatures of the Dead” by Simon Young

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, and I was excited to read an alternative werewolf story set in medieval Russia. Honestly, I was a little disappointed with the book. It did not feel authentically Russian to read and could have been set in medieval England, apart from the names of towns. I found it difficult to connect with the characters, but I did appreciate the strong female lead, and of course the werewolf story was fun. Oh, and I think my favourite character was the dog, Tsar! If you like classic monster stories, then I think you will enjoy this book.

About the Book

Although only a young woman Katherine is becoming a professional in her trade – hunting werewolves. The year is 1642. It’s cold in Russia and Royal Russian Lycanthropes are a problem. Desperate people pay highly for her skills and ferocity. She is rarely out of work. With her father injured she took on the last assignment alone, obsessed with wiping them out armed only with her wits, her hound, Tsar, and a ton of weapons. She has not killed them all yet. But then…

Witchy Wednesday: Embracing Moon Magic – A Guide to Harnessing Lunar Phases

Understanding the Lunar Phases

The moon cycles through eight distinct phases, each imbued with its unique energy. By working with these phases, you can tap into the natural rhythms of the universe to amplify your intentions. Here’s a brief overview of each phase and how you can harness its energy:

1. New Moon (or Dark Moon, as I prefer to call it) 🌑

   – Energy: New beginnings, setting intentions, planting seeds.

   – Ritual Ideas: Write down your goals and desires. Create a vision board or journal your intentions. This is a time for setting the foundation for future projects and dreams.

2. Waxing Crescent 🌒

   – Energy: Growth, development, building momentum.

   – Ritual Ideas: Focus on nurturing and expanding your intentions. Perform spells for progress and personal growth. Use this time to gather resources or information needed for your goals.

   – Energy: Decision-making, overcoming obstacles, taking action.

3. First Quarter 🌓

   – Ritual Ideas: Address any challenges or hurdles in your path. Perform rituals to boost confidence and courage. It’s a good time to evaluate your progress and make adjustments as needed.

4. Waxing Gibbous 🌔

   – Energy: Refinement, fine-tuning, increasing energy.

   – Ritual Ideas: Focus on refining your goals and working diligently towards them. Engage in activities that support growth and improvement. This is a period for enhancing and perfecting your work.

5. Full Moon 🌕

   – Energy: Completion, manifestation, illumination.

   – Ritual Ideas: Celebrate and give thanks for the abundance you’ve manifested. Perform rituals to release what no longer serves you and to bring closure to ongoing projects. The full moon is a powerful time for divination and deepening your spiritual insights.

6. Waning Gibbous 🌖

   – Energy: Gratitude, reflection, sharing.

   – Ritual Ideas: Reflect on your recent achievements and express gratitude. Share your abundance with others through acts of kindness or donations. Use this time to review and learn from your experiences.

7. Last Quarter 🌗

   – Energy: Release, letting go, forgiveness.

   – Ritual Ideas: Focus on releasing negative energy or situations that no longer serve you. Perform rituals for forgiveness and letting go. This is a time to clear out old patterns and make space for new beginnings.

8. Waning Crescent 🌘

   – Energy: Rest, introspection, preparation.

   – Ritual Ideas: Engage in quiet reflection and self-care. Use this time for meditation and preparing for the next cycle. This is a period for rest and rejuvenation before the new moon’s energy arrives.

July’s Full Moon Ritual

As we bask in the afterglow of July’s full moon, let’s take advantage of this powerful phase to set the stage for the upcoming lunar cycle. Here’s a simple ritual to help you harness the full moon’s energy:

1. Gather Your Tools: A journal, candles (preferably white or silver), a crystal (such as moonstone or clear quartz), and any items that represent your goals or desires. Try this book of Moon spells to help you on your quest.

2. Create Your Space: Find a quiet place where you can focus without interruptions. Light your candles and place your crystal in front of you.

3. Reflect and Release: Take a few moments to meditate on what you’ve accomplished and what you wish to let go of. Write down any thoughts or feelings that come up, especially those you wish to release.

4. Manifest and Celebrate: Write down your intentions or wishes for the upcoming cycle. Visualize them coming to fruition under the light of the full moon. Spend a few moments in gratitude for what you’ve achieved and the guidance you’ve received.

5. Close the Ritual: Extinguish your candles and thank the moon for its light and energy. Take your crystal with you as a reminder of the intentions you’ve set.

Embracing the Lunar Rhythms

Working with the moon’s phases offers a profound way to connect with natural rhythms and enhance your magical practices. By aligning your rituals with the lunar cycle, you can tap into the moon’s energy to manifest your desires, overcome obstacles, and create meaningful change in your life.

As we move forward from this full moon, remember to carry the lessons learned and the energy gained into the coming phases. Embrace the ebb and flow of lunar magic and let it guide you on your journey.

Until next time, may your path be illuminated by the moon’s gentle glow. 🌕✨

#MummyMonday: Mindful Parenting – Managing Screen Time During Summer Break

Hello, SpookyMrsGreen friends! Welcome to another #MummyMonday. Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s on every parent’s mind during the summer: managing screen time. With school out and the long summer days ahead, it’s a balancing act to keep our children entertained and engaged without letting them spend too much time on screens.

Let’s explore some mindful parenting strategies to ensure a healthy balance between screen time and outdoor activities this summer.

Image of a girl sitting on a sofa with a laptop. Image of an open book and a tree with children standing on the pages. Text reads, “Try Grafari for free. Affiliated with SpookyMrsGreen.com.” Grafari award-winning educational app for kids aged 6-10 from Constructor affiliated with SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.

The Screen Time Dilemma

In today’s digital age, screens are an integral part of our lives. From educational apps to video games, screens can be both a blessing and a challenge. While they offer educational content and entertainment, it’s essential to set boundaries to prevent excessive use. Here are some tips to help you manage your children’s screen time effectively.

Tips for Balancing Screen Time and Outdoor Activities

1. Set Clear Limits:

Establish daily screen time limits for your children. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than one hour per day of high-quality screen time for children aged 2 to 5, and consistent limits for older kids. Setting clear expectations helps children understand when it’s time to unplug.

2. Create a Schedule:

Design a daily schedule that includes specific times for screen use and outdoor activities. This structure helps children anticipate their day and look forward to both screen time and outdoor fun. Be sure to include meal times, reading time, and other activities in the schedule.

Encourage Outdoor Play:

Make outdoor activities a priority. Encourage your children to play in the garden, go for nature walks, or visit the local park. Outdoor play not only keeps them physically active but also stimulates their imagination and social skills.

4. Use Educational Apps:

When it’s time for screen use, opt for educational apps that promote learning and creativity. I’m excited to share that our affiliate partner, Constructor, offers two award-winning apps perfect for kids aged 6 to 10. You can enjoy a 3-day FREE trial of Calcularis and Grafari. These apps are designed to make learning fun and engaging, providing a productive use of screen time.

5. Family Time Activities:

Incorporate family activities that don’t involve screens. Board games, puzzles, and craft projects are excellent ways to spend quality time together. These activities foster family bonding and create lasting memories.

6. Be a Role Model:

Children often mimic their parents’ behavior. Demonstrate healthy screen habits by limiting your own screen time. Show them the value of engaging in offline activities and spending time outdoors.

7. Tech-Free Zones:

Designate certain areas of your home as tech-free zones, such as the dining room and bedrooms. This encourages mindful screen use and promotes better sleep and mealtime interactions.

Making the Most of Summer

Summer is a fantastic time to explore new hobbies and interests. Encourage your children to take up activities like gardening, bird watching, or even starting a summer journal. These activities can be both fun and educational, providing a rich, screen-free experience.

Managing Screen Time Doesn’t Have to be a Battle

Managing screen time during summer break doesn’t have to be a battle. By setting clear limits, encouraging outdoor play, and utilizing educational apps, you can create a balanced routine that benefits your children’s development and well-being. Don’t forget to take advantage of the 3-day FREE trials for Calcularis and Grafari to add an educational twist to their screen time. Here’s to a summer full of fun, learning, and mindful parenting!

How do you manage your children’s screen time during the summer? Share your tips and experiences in the comments below. Happy #MummyMonday!

#WitchyWednesday: Introduction to Crystal Healing – Which Stones to Start With

Welcome back to another enchanting #WitchyWednesday on SpookyMrsGreen.com! Today, we’re diving into the mystical world of crystal healing, a practice that has been a cornerstone of my spiritual journey for almost twenty years.

Crystals have been my companions through thick and thin, aiding in alleviating chronic pain, boosting self-confidence, and lifting my spirits during low times. Not to mention, their vibrant, sparkling presence adds a touch of magic to my home decor.

The Basics of Crystal Healing

Crystal healing is an ancient practice that harnesses the energy of crystals and gemstones to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Each crystal carries its unique vibration and frequency, which can interact with our own energy fields to help balance and heal. Whether you’re dealing with stress, seeking emotional clarity, or simply looking to bring more positivity into your life, there’s a crystal that can support you on your journey.

To get started with crystal healing, it’s essential to understand a few key principles:

1. Intention: Your thoughts and intentions play a crucial role in crystal healing. When you choose a crystal, set a clear intention for what you hope to achieve. When I am purchasing a crystal, I like to hold my hand above the selection and allow the energy to guide my hand to the crystal that I need to select. It isn’t always the shiniest, cleanest looking crystal that you need to work with!

2. Cleansing: Crystals absorb energy from their surroundings, so it’s important to cleanse them regularly. Methods include running them under water, placing them in sunlight or moonlight, or using smudging techniques with sage. I like to put them outside during a thunderstorm so they get a good cleanse, but that happens rarely in my corner of the UK. We have plenty of rain to do the job though.

3. Programming: After cleansing, hold your crystal and focus on your intention. This helps to “program” the crystal with your specific needs. Think about the challenges you are working to overcome, or maybe a situation that you need to resolve, and the crystal will pick up on that energy and connect with you.

4. Placement: You can carry crystals with you, place them in your home, or even wear them as jewellery to keep their energy close. I like to place them near my computer when I’m working, sometimes I will put them in the car, and I place them around the house to balance the energies of my family members.

Beginner Stones: Where to Start

When starting your journey with crystals, it’s best to begin with stones that are versatile and easy to work with. Here are a few recommendations:

1. Clear Quartz

Known as the “master healer,” clear quartz is incredibly versatile. It can be used for any condition and is known to amplify the energy of other crystals. Clear quartz helps to balance and harmonize your energy, bringing clarity and focus. I have lots of clear quartz in my house!

2. Amethyst

Amethyst is a beautiful purple stone that promotes calmness, balance, and peace. It’s excellent for meditation and helps to protect against negative energy. Amethyst can also aid in relieving stress and anxiety, making it a perfect companion for those challenging days. I have a beautiful amethyst lamp in my living room, and I love to hold my hands over it for an energy boost when I feel the need.

3. Rose Quartz

Rose quartz is the stone of unconditional love. It opens the heart chakra and promotes self-love, compassion, and emotional healing. This gentle pink stone is ideal for those seeking to enhance their relationships and foster a deeper connection with themselves. I am currently working with rose quartz to heal ancestral wounds relating to women. Its feminine energy is potent and cannot be underestimated.

4. Black Tourmaline

Black tourmaline is a powerful protective stone. It shields against negative energy, electromagnetic radiation, and psychic attacks. It’s a grounding stone that helps to bring a sense of stability and security. This is a good stone to keep near your computer and any devices that you regularly use.

My Favourite Crystals: A Personal Touch

Over the years, I have developed a deep connection with several crystals that have become my favourites. Let me introduce you to them:

Tigers Eye

Tigers Eye is a striking stone known for its bands of golden and brown hues. It’s a stone of protection and grounding, helping to release fear and anxiety. Tigers Eye enhances courage, strength, and personal power, making it an excellent stone for boosting self-confidence and self-esteem.

Clear Quartz

As mentioned earlier, clear quartz is a must-have in any crystal collection. Its ability to amplify energy and intentions makes it a powerful tool for manifesting your desires and enhancing your spiritual practice.

Amethyst

Amethyst’s calming and protective properties have been a constant source of comfort for me. Its soothing energy helps to alleviate stress and anxiety, while also promoting spiritual growth and intuition.

Red Jasper

Red jasper is a vibrant, earthy stone that provides strength and stamina. It’s known as a stone of endurance and nurturing, offering support during times of stress and providing a sense of stability. Red jasper also helps to stimulate creativity and bring your ideas to fruition. I worked with red jasper shortly before I got pregnant with my first child. Coincidence? I leave it with you to ponder, but I have my answer!

Embrace the Magic of Crystals

Whether you’re new to crystal healing or looking to expand your collection, these stones are a wonderful place to start. Remember, the key to working with crystals is to trust your intuition and choose the stones that resonate with you. Each crystal has its unique magic, ready to support and guide you on your journey.

Thank you for joining me on this #WitchyWednesday exploration of crystal healing. May your path be illuminated by the vibrant energy of these beautiful gems. Until next time, blessed be!
