My Thoughts on the Novel

Set in southern England during the Second World War, this novel draws you deep into a shadowy world where myth and reality are woven together with chilling precision. It’s part historical drama, part vampire novel in the classic Bram Stoker tradition, but with a fresh and unexpected twist.

Our heroine, Jane, is a young orphan girl who is sent away to boarding school for her safety amidst the chaos of war. But Jane is no ordinary schoolgirl. With lilac eyes and silver-white hair, she is a vampire coming of age. This is a story about self-discovery, heritage, and survival in a world that hides far more than bombs and political secrets.

As Jane begins to explore her identity and sexuality, she uncovers shocking truths about her family bloodline. Her ancestors are not only vampires, but also the infamous vampire hunters of legend. This duality creates a fascinating tension, placing Jane directly at the heart of a centuries-old conflict.

The author does a wonderful job of weaving folklore into fact. Vampire myths are interlaced with scientific reasoning and historical detail, which makes the narrative both intriguing and at times, a little overwhelming. I admit, I occasionally found myself lost among the many cultural references and threads of espionage—but that only added to the sense of mystery.

And then there’s the ending. Oh, the twist! It was hidden in plain sight the whole time, leaving me questioning the very boundaries of fiction and reality. Isn’t that the mark of a truly Gothic tale?

Jane Van Helsing is a vampire, proud of her heritage and striking in her appearance. But her legacy is complicated: she is also descended from Abraham Van Helsing, the most famous vampire hunter of them all. As the summer holidays wind down and the crisp whispers of autumn float on the breeze, it’s time to prepare our children – and ourselves – for the return to school. In our household, that transition is never rushed or rigid. We do it the witchy way – with intention, magic, and a little help from our favourite tools and rituals.

Whether your child is starting high school, moving up a year, or even preparing for GCSEs (like my elder daughter), it can be a stressful time for families. That’s why I like to create a calming, grounded environment at home to ease the shift from freedom to structure.

✹ Set the Energetic Tone

We begin our back-to-school preparations with a home cleanse. I burn sage or Palo Santo, set out my favourite crystals (rose quartz for emotional support, fluorite for focus), and invite peace and clarity into our space. You don’t have to be a practising witch to do this – just take a moment to clear your mind, breathe deeply, and say a simple intention like: “We welcome this new school year with calm, confidence, and curiosity.”

You might even get your children involved by letting them choose a crystal to keep in their pencil case or bag. It helps them feel safe and empowered as they step into the new term.

🎒 Practical Magic – With a Little Help from TGJones

đŸ‘» What Are Haunted Dolls?

A haunted doll, or spirit vessel, is an object—usually a doll—that is believed to house a spirit or energetic imprint. These dolls are often collected by paranormal investigators (like myself!), spiritualists, or curious folk who feel drawn to them.

Haunted dolls can arrive with loving, peaceful energy—or they may carry residual trauma, sadness, or mischief. Not every haunted doll is harmful, but it’s always wise to keep your energy clear and balanced when working with one.

🌕 Why Cleanse a Haunted Doll?

Just like we cleanse our crystals, sacred spaces, and even ourselves, haunted dolls need energetic care. Whether the spirit within is playful, protective, or confused, it’s important to create harmony in your home. Here’s why I cleanse my dolls regularly:

  • To remove stagnant or negative energy
  • To reset the energy before spirit communication sessions
  • To protect my children, pets, and home
  • To honour the spirit’s presence with respect and care

Cleansing doesn’t mean banishing or exorcising (unless that’s the intention). It’s about realignment, grounding, and clear communication.

🔼 How to Cleanse Haunted Dolls: My Method

Everyone has their own method of cleansing, but here’s what works for me—especially when I’m preparing for spirit communication or after attending a paranormal investigation with my dolls.

1. Set a Clear Intention

Before I begin, I state my intention aloud:

“I cleanse this doll of any energy that no longer serves the highest good. May only love and light remain.”

Intent is everything when it comes to spiritual work.

2. Use Smoke Cleansing

I pass each doll through the smoke of ethically sourced white sage, rosemary, or palo santo. If indoors, I make sure the space is well-ventilated. For a gentler cleanse, I often use incense sticks infused with lavender or frankincense.

3. Sound Cleansing

I use a singing bowl, bell, or tuning fork to break up heavy energy around the doll. Sound waves can reset and realign energy quickly.

4. Crystal Charging

After cleansing, I place the doll near a selenite wand or amethyst cluster overnight. Selenite is my go-to for purifying energy and encouraging peaceful vibrations.

5. Moonlight Recharge

During the full moon, I place my dolls by a window or on my altar to soak up lunar energy. This is especially effective if a doll feels “heavy” or overly active.

đŸ•Żïž Bonus Tip: Create a Protective Circle

If you’re performing spirit communication or using tools like a spirit box or dowsing rods, it’s wise to create a protective circle first. I use black tourmaline and a white candle, and I call on my spirit guides to assist. This keeps my energy grounded and protected throughout the session.

🌒 When Should You Cleanse Your Haunted Dolls?

Here are some signs it might be time for a cleanse:

My Review of “Concealing Evil” by L.J. Daniel

This is hands-down one of my favourite reads of the year so far — and yes, I might be a little obsessed with Clancy Kane. He’s an occult assassin trained since childhood by a shadowy organisation known as the Seven Legged Spiders. On paper, he’s cold, calculated, and utterly lethal. In reality
 well, he’s still those things, but the cracks in his armour reveal a more complex, conflicted man.

This book never lets up. The pace is relentless, the violence deliciously gruesome, and the dark humour slices through the tension like a well-aimed blade. The occult worldbuilding feels rich and believable — blood magic, sinister rituals, and a shadow-society pulling strings behind the scenes. There’s even the faintest spark of potential romance simmering beneath the chaos, and I can’t wait to see if it ignites in the next book.

If you enjoy fast-paced urban fantasy with a morally grey anti-hero, Concealing Evil delivers exactly that — with style.

About the Book

When a supernatural cult attempts to kill their own assassin, he must use all his skills to defend himself. Can he survive the nightmares they unleash while finding redemption?

However, if you don’t have any real plan or even talk about how those finances are to be handled, it can lead to major misunderstandings and tough times down the road.

As such, here, we’ll look at how you can be mindful about putting your money together.

Transparency Is A Must

Finances can be awkward, even a little embarrassing to talk about. However, it’s important to put everything on the table. Talk about your income, savings, debts, credit scores, as well as your spending habits. It’s about building trust as much as it is about numbers, and it makes sure that there are no surprises down the line. It also helps you be aware of circumstances you might have to navigate from now on. Honesty almost always helps improve your relationship, whereas secrets only tend to hurt.

Plan Your Budget Together

When you’re handling shared household expenses, you should ensure that you have a budget. Not only should the budget cover both daily essentials, discretionary spending, and savings, but you should have a clear idea of who contributes what. You may want to weigh it based on your relative earnings, but some couples prefer a straight 50/50 cut. If you do, however, the discrepancy in your remaining finances may need to be discussed so that resentment doesn’t build.

Consider A Joint Account

One of the more formal steps you can take to simplify your shared expenses is to create a joint account. Many couples open a joint bank account ot manage costs while maintaining separate accounts for personal spending. This hybrid approach balances unity and independence. Decide together how much each person will contribute and automate your deposits so that things are kept consistent, rather than leaving room for misunderstandings through late payments.

If you’re serious about your relationship and both are mature adults, then you should understand the need for some legal and financial protection. A cohabitation agreement can offer that for couples who aren’t married. This document outlines how assets, debts, and expenses will be handled if the relationship ends. It can also cover property rights, as well as potential inheritance, so you should find out more about the agreements from a family lawyer. They can make sure that you’re both on the same page in terms of your responsibilities and future plans.

Keep Checking In

Finances change and, as such, you should be ready to have a conversation about it on a regular basis. Having a monthly finances day where you look over spending, savings, and discuss any potential plans and changes can ensure that talking about money together becomes routine, rather than something you dread bringing up only when a potential problem rears its head.

Money is one of the most common causes of stress in a relationship, especially one that’s transitioning from one stage to the next. Take the tips above seriously so you can avoid that.

Lammas (or Lughnasadh) is the first of the harvest festivals in the Pagan Wheel of the Year, and it always brings a special energy to our home. This year, it was even more meaningful—because we celebrated my younger daughter’s twelfth birthday right in the heart of this golden, magical season.

As a family, we’ve always found creative ways to blend modern life with our spiritual path. Our Lammas celebrations are not overly elaborate, but they are heartfelt, and this year they took on a deeper resonance as my daughter grows into her teen years with her own blossoming sense of self.

✹ What is Lammas?

Lammas (1st August) marks the beginning of the grain harvest. The word itself comes from “Loaf Mass,” and it was traditionally a time when people baked bread from the first harvested grain and offered it in gratitude. In Pagan and Wiccan traditions, we celebrate the bounty of the Earth, give thanks for what we’ve gathered—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—and prepare for the waning of summer.

It’s a time of reflection, community, and gentle abundance. And for parents, it can be a beautiful moment to pause and acknowledge the growth within our children and ourselves.

đŸŒ» A Birthday Blessed by the Sun

This year, my daughter asked for two very specific birthday presents: a professional camera and Heartstopper merchandise. She’s diving into creative hobbies and expressing herself more freely than ever, and I couldn’t be prouder. I see her stepping into her identity with courage and curiosity—just as the Wheel turns and we enter the second half of the year, full of change and transformation.

We kept the birthday celebration low-key but meaningful. We gathered in our garden under the soft summer sun, lit a candle on a homemade cake, and gave thanks for the year that has passed. We spoke quiet blessings, made wishes, and toasted the occasion with a little bottle of mead (for the grown-ups, of course!).

Take a walk in nature and gather fallen leaves, feathers, flowers or herbs. Create a Lammas altar or seasonal centrepiece at home with your finds.

Each family member writes down one thing they’re thankful for and one goal or dream they’re working toward. These can be folded and placed in a jar or burned in a mini fire ceremony (safely, of course).

4. Make Sun Crafts

Craft sun wheels from twigs, or paint with warm yellows and oranges. These are great activities for younger kids and can also be adapted for older children with more creative flair.
