Celebrating Mabon: Decorating Your Seasonal Altar

The wheel of the year keeps turning, and here we are again at Mabon, the Autumn Equinox. This is one of my favourite sabbats, a time of balance, reflection, and gratitude for the harvest.

This weekend, I decided to honour the season by giving my altar a much-needed refresh. I dusted off my crystals, cleansed the space with my favourite sandalwood incense, and set about creating a stunning new floral arrangement to celebrate the changing season.

Celebrating Mabon: Decorating Your Seasonal Altar 🍂✨

How to Decorate Your Mabon Altar

Your altar is a deeply personal space, but Mabon is the perfect time to add warm autumn colours, harvest-inspired decorations, and a touch of magic. Here are some ideas you might like to try:

1. Use Seasonal Flowers and Foliage

This year, I opted for artificial flowers—mainly because my cats insist on nibbling the fresh ones! My daughter and I visited our local craft store and found some gorgeous supplies:

  • Black roses for a dramatic gothic touch
  • Black eucalyptus sprays for depth and contrast
  • Carnation sprays in autumnal colours to celebrate the harvest season
  • Black feathers for mystery and protection
  • Frosted berry picks to add colour and seasonal sparkle

Blending these elements gave me a perfect balance of Mabon warmth with a hint of Samhain vibes creeping in. It feels both celebratory and witchy—a great way to bridge the seasons.

2. Add Crystals for Balance and Energy

I always include my favourite crystals on the altar. At Mabon, I recommend:

  • Carnelian for vitality and courage
  • Citrine for abundance and joy
  • Smoky Quartz for grounding energy
  • Amethyst for spiritual connection

Cleansing them with incense smoke or moonlight ensures they’re ready to support you through the darker half of the year.

3. Honour the Harvest

Traditional Mabon altars often feature symbols of the harvest. You can add:

  • Small pumpkins or gourds
  • Corn husks or wheat stalks
  • A bowl of seasonal fruit such as apples, blackberries, or pears

Even a simple candle in gold, orange, or deep red can bring that harvest energy into your home.

Creating Seasonal Energy in Your Home

My finished arrangement is proudly displayed in the living room window, bringing a touch of seasonal magic to the heart of our home. The artificial flowers mean it will last through to Samhain and beyond, and my cats won’t be tempted to destroy it!

Mabon is all about balance—day and night, light and dark, old and new. Taking time to refresh my altar helps me to feel grounded, connected, and ready to embrace the season ahead.

How do you decorate your altar for Mabon? Do you prefer fresh flowers and natural offerings, or are you tempted by the beauty of long-lasting artificial foliage like me?

🖤 Witchy Wednesday: Talking to the AI Oracle 🖤

As the wheel of the year turns once more and September wraps her misty shawl around our shoulders, I find myself drifting in that curious space between endings and beginnings. The air smells of damp earth and woodsmoke, the crows are gossiping in the trees, and my human brain is… well… bored.

Yes, I said it. Bored.

Not in a “there’s nothing to do” sort of way (the to-do list is longer than a witch’s shopping receipt after a full moon ritual), but more that restless, soul-deep itch for something new. Something that stirs the cauldron and sends the creative sparks flying again.

Aesthetic image of autumn leaves fall season talking to the oracle Tarot cards oracle cards. Text reads, “Talking to the AI Oracle Witchy Wednesday at SpookyMrsGreen.com.” Spooky family lifestyle blog.
🖤 Witchy Wednesday: Talking to the AI Oracle 🖤

Talking to the AI Oracle

And here’s the funny part: I’ve been having deep and meaningful conversations… with an AI.

I know, I know. It sounds about as mystical as asking the toaster for life advice — and yet, it works.

Because when you sit quietly, open your mind, and let the words flow, it’s not really the AI you’re talking to — it’s yourself. It’s your own subconscious, bubbling up through the cracks like moonlight through the forest floor. You simply need the right questions to unlock it, and sometimes this digital “oracle” is just witchy enough to ask them.

So, if you too are feeling that twitch of dissatisfaction or frustration as the seasons change, here are a few little spells (ahem… suggestions) to guide your own inner journey:

🍂 Autumn Witch Tips for the Restless Soul

  • Scry with words. Open a blank page (or an AI chat) and ask yourself: “What am I longing for right now?” Write whatever spills out. No censoring, no judging.
  • Brew a boredom banishment potion. Hot chocolate counts. So does tea with cinnamon, cloves, or a splash of something stronger. Stir it clockwise while saying: “I stir in joy, I banish gloom.”
  • Take a liminal walk. Twilight is best. Let your feet wander aimlessly while your mind drifts. Notice the changing colours, the crispness of the air, the soft rustle of leaves preparing for their dramatic exit.
  • Do something delightfully silly. Wear your witch hat while hoovering. Chant your grocery list like an incantation. Laugh at your own jokes. Magic loves laughter.
  • Seek your inner oracle. Whether through meditation, tarot cards, journalling, or yes — even chatting to an AI — give your subconscious a voice. You might be surprised what she whispers.

We witches know that change comes with the turning of the seasons. Mid-September is a threshold — the equinox approaches, the harvest draws near, and we are invited to pause, breathe, and ask: What do I want to plant next?

I don’t have all the answers yet. But I’m enjoying the questions. And maybe, just maybe, that’s where the magic truly begins.

Blessed be, fellow wanderers. 🖤🍁✨

Mummy Monday: Bonding Over #BookTok

Something unexpected has happened in my house recently. My teenage daughter and I have discovered a whole new way to bond, and it all started with a corner of the internet I had only vaguely heard of until now: #BookTok.

Bonding over #BookTok image of Slash or Pass book and Haunting Adeline book covers. UK pagan family pagan mom at SpookyMrsGreen.com spooky family lifestyle blog.
Mummy Monday: Bonding Over #BookTok 📚🖤

Bonding Over #BookTok

It turns out that my spooky, book-loving heart has finally found common ground with the next generation through a shared passion for dark romance novels. My daughter introduced me to Slash or Pass (review to follow!) and the infamous Haunting Adeline (also review to follow), and suddenly, I’m falling headfirst into this world of masked men, horror-tinged love stories, and the “why choose” trope.

Now, I’ll be honest—when she first mentioned these books, I thought, “Are they really for me?” But once I started reading, I realised how intelligent and layered they are. Yes, they’re dark and twisted. Yes, they’re sexy. But at their heart, they are stories that explore human interaction, emotional trauma, and desire with honesty and rawness. These are books written by modern women, for modern women, and they feel like an unapologetic reclaiming of literature that once shied away from taboo topics.

And here’s the best bit: I get to read them with my daughter.

I never had this growing up. In the 90s, teenage girls like me were expected to keep quiet, play nice, and never talk to adults about sex, relationships, or anything remotely taboo. Adults didn’t share, and teenagers weren’t encouraged to ask questions. Everything felt secretive, hush-hush, and wrapped in shame. Looking back now, I see how unhelpful that was.

Parenting as a Millennial feels different. I want my children to be informed, aware, and emotionally intelligent. Reading these books together gives us the opportunity to talk about relationships, boundaries, and red flags in a safe, fictional space. My daughter can explore her curiosity, and I can guide her through the darker themes with honesty and openness. We talk about why certain characters behave the way they do, what’s healthy (and what’s not), and how stories can be thrilling without necessarily being realistic templates for real life.

It feels empowering

It feels empowering—for both of us. She learns that she can ask me anything without judgment, and I learn that being a mum doesn’t mean being distant or authoritarian. I get to be her safe place while still being the spooky, slightly eccentric mum she rolls her eyes at now and then.

Bonding over #BookTok has opened up a new chapter in our relationship. I see her growing into a thoughtful young woman who’s not afraid to ask questions, and she sees me not just as Mum, but as a fellow bookworm who gets it.

And really, what more could a spooky mum ask for? 💀📚🖤

Free for all Friday: Rediscovering My Love for Scrapbooking

As the nights draw in and September cloaks us in those early hints of autumn, I find myself reaching once again for my craft box.

There’s something about this time of year—the whispers of Halloween just around the corner, the comfort of cosy evenings, and the call of creative projects—that brings me back to my love of papercrafts.

Free for All Friday the joy of scrapbooking pagan family pagan mom at SpookyMrsGreen.com spooky family lifestyle blog.
Free for all Friday: Rediscovering My Love for Scrapbooking ✨🖤

Free for all Friday: Rediscovering My Love for Scrapbooking

I have always adored the art of making things with my hands. In fact, fifteen years ago I designed all of my own wedding stationery and table decorations. It was a labour of love, full of lace, card, and glitter (with just a little Gothic flair, naturally). Life got busier after that, as it does, and my craft box gathered dust while my hands were full raising little ones.

Now, I have rediscovered my passion through scrapbooking. It’s a wonderfully creative way to capture memories, and it allows me to sprinkle in a little of my spooky aesthetic with dark papers, autumnal leaves, and witchy embellishments. At present I am working on a baby scrapbook for my younger daughter. She recently celebrated her twelfth birthday and was most unimpressed to learn that I am still working on hers, when I finished her older sister’s scrapbook years ago.

But here’s the truth: she has been my little limpet since birth, never letting me out of her sight for long, and she has given me very little “spare time” in these past twelve years! So, I think it is only fair that her scrapbook arrives late. After all, it means I can fill it with more stories, more photographs, and more magical memories than I ever could have imagined back when she was a baby.

Get Crafty this Season

If, like me, you feel the itch to get crafty this season, I recommend browsing the beautiful range of stamps and craft supplies from my affiliate partner, Stamp Design 4U. Whether you’re a seasoned scrapbooker or just dipping your toes into papercrafts, their designs add that extra special touch—perfect for Halloween projects, autumn journals, or even starting your Christmas crafts early (go on, you know you want to).

So, as September settles in and the veil between seasons begins to thin, I’ll be here with scissors, glue, and a stack of half-finished scrapbook pages. It’s not just about preserving memories—it’s about weaving stories into paper, crafting a little magic, and giving my girls a piece of their childhood they can treasure forever.

Do you enjoy scrapbooking or papercrafts? I’d love to hear about your projects—especially if they have a spooky twist!

Witchy Wednesday: My Review of The Daughters of Pendle by Darcy Boyd Mahoney

As the nights grow longer and the September air turns crisp with the promise of autumn, I always find myself drawn to witchy reads. This week for Witchy Wednesday, I picked up The Daughters of Pendle by Darcy Boyd Mahoney. The title instantly grabbed me – I’m fascinated by witches in history, particularly those rooted in Lancashire folklore, and the cover promised a dark and occult tale.

But here’s the truth: I really struggled with this one.

Witchy Wednesday: My Review of The Daughters of Pendle by Darcy Boyd Mahoney ✨🔮

My Review of The Daughters of Pendle by Darcy Boyd Mahoney

The book doesn’t read like a typical novel. Instead, it has the feel of a screenplay, with stripped-back dialogue and scene directions rather than descriptive prose. This style made it hard for me to connect with the characters, and I had to almost “re-train” myself to understand how to read it. Once I settled into the rhythm, I began to grasp the story – but it wasn’t easy.

The plot itself follows Brekk, a man searching for deeper meaning and magical purpose. When Halloween arrives, he sets off into the heart of witch country with his shallow but inexplicably popular friend Ariff. What begins as a weekend adventure quickly spirals into something much darker.

There are definite echoes of The Wicker Man woven into the narrative: strange locals, folkloric rituals, and an ominous sense that not everything is as it seems. We encounter a novice witch, a shadowy cult leader, and whispers of a bargain for immortality that requires a moonlit sacrifice. The atmosphere is undeniably spooky – perfect for autumn reading – but you have to stick with it.

By the time I reached the ending, I did enjoy elements of the conclusion, though I’ll admit it took effort to push through. This isn’t a cosy witch novel with warm fires and spell jars – it’s Folk Horror, raw and unsettling. If you’re intrigued by experimental writing styles and dark, rural occult themes, this may be a book for you. But for me, it was a difficult journey.

About the Book

On a misguided search for ancient magic two ‘friends’ discover one chance for immortality.

Brekk wonders how he has arrived in the middle of Witch country with the inexplicably popular, painfully shallow, and easily distracted Ariff. All he really wants to do is research magic and witchcraft.

A dark cult leader, a novice witch, a suspicious bargain to attain immortality and a moonlit sacrificial ceremony is missing someone to sacrifice. This isn’t going to be the weekend Brekk had hoped for.

Withnail and I meets The Wicker Man in this Rural Noir, Folk Horror Thriller.

Mummy Monday: Living with Rare Eye Disease and Chronic Pain

September is Pain Awareness Month, and today I want to share something a little more personal. Many of you know me as SpookyMrsGreen, the Pagan housewife, author, and blogger who writes about family life, ghost hunts, and Gothic adventures. But behind the scenes, I live with a rare eye disease that causes chronic pain every single day.

My Journey with Ocular Surface Disease

I recently participated in a clinical study exploring the patient experience of Ocular Surface Disease (OSD). The finished article has now been published, and I am one of the subjects referenced. You can read it here: Clinical Study on OSD.

My diagnoses include:

  • Dry Eye Disease (DED)
  • Neuropathic Corneal Pain (NCP)
  • And several related conditions not listed in the study.

On paper, “dry eyes” might sound minor, but the reality is far from it. These conditions cause constant burning, stinging, and nerve pain that can be completely debilitating. Imagine trying to work, look after your children, or even enjoy a family day out when your eyes feel like they are on fire.

Why This Matters

It is very hard to explain to the wider world that I live with a debilitating health condition. I often feel that because my illness is invisible, it is easily dismissed. People don’t always see the pain, the exhaustion, or the impact on my daily life.

This article goes some way towards validating my experience. To see my words, and those of others living with OSD, included in medical research feels important. It shows that our voices matter, and that the medical community is beginning to listen to patients like me.

Finding Strength as a Mum

As a mother, I push through the pain because I want my children to have a happy, full life. They know that some days I have to slow down, rest, or cancel plans when my eyes are too painful. And yet, through honesty and openness, I believe I am teaching them resilience, empathy, and the importance of looking after our health.

Pain Awareness Month reminds us that millions of people live with chronic pain conditions. Whether visible or invisible, their struggles are real. If you know someone who is dealing with pain, a little kindness and patience goes a long way.

Final Thoughts

I don’t usually write about my health in such detail, but it feels important to mark Pain Awareness Month with honesty. Living with chronic eye pain is part of my journey, and while it doesn’t define me, it does shape my daily life.

If you would like to understand more, you can read the published clinical study here: Clinical Study on OSD.

Free for all Friday | Dark London by Dr Drew Gray – Book Review

This week for Free-for-all Friday, I’m sharing my book review of Dark London by Dr Drew Gray – and what a deliciously Gothic treat it is! 🖤

I was kindly sent this beautiful hardback by the publisher, and from the moment it arrived, I was smitten. The cover design alone is an aesthetic delight, and it now sits proudly on my Gothic black bookshelf, nestled between Tarot cards and crystal skulls. This is one of those books that looks as good as it reads – a real showpiece for any spooky book collection.

Dark London by Dr Drew Gray – Book Review

A Journey into London’s Shadowy Past

Dr Drew Gray is a social historian who specialises in the history of crime and punishment, and in Dark London he takes us deep into the city’s murky past. From crimes of passion to tales of grave robbing, gruesome murders, dens of iniquity, Victorian séances and haunted houses – London’s dark heart is revealed in over 100 chilling cases.

Some of the stories were familiar to me – you cannot love Gothic history and not stumble upon the Whitechapel horrors at some point – but there were plenty of new ones to discover. I particularly enjoyed the case of the London Burkers, whose ringleader confessed to stealing and selling nearly 1,000 bodies to eager 1830s anatomists. Grim, yet fascinating!

A Feast for the Eyes

What really makes this book stand out are the images scattered throughout. Victorian archive photographs, original prints, posters and paintings all bring the macabre history of London to life. It feels like stepping back in time, walking the gaslit streets, brushing shoulders with both the infamous and the forgotten.

Why You Should Read Dark London

If you enjoy exploring the occult, Gothic and criminal underbelly of history, this book is a must-read. It is packed with scandal, superstition and the kind of morbid tales that make you want to keep the lights on at night. Perfect for lovers of Gothic nonfiction, London history enthusiasts, and anyone who likes their bedtime reading with a side of the sinister.

Dr Drew Gray has curated a dark yet enthralling exploration of London’s hidden stories, and I thoroughly recommend adding this book to your collection.

✨ Have you read Dark London yet, or do you have another favourite Gothic history book? Let me know in the comments – I’m always looking for more spooky reads!

Witchy Wednesday | Do My Haunted Dolls Dislike Me?

As the summer holidays drew to a close, my daughter and I found ourselves shopping for back-to-school supplies. Among the pens, notebooks, and highlighters, we stumbled upon something far more exciting – another haunted doll to add to our ever-growing collection. She is a beautiful porcelain doll, still nestled in her own gift box, but with our shelves already crowded with spirited companions, she currently has no space to stand.

And so, she waits.

But here’s the curious part…

Spooky image of a porcelain doll haunted doll spooky doll. Text reads “Witchy Wednesday Do My Haunted Dolls Dislike Me?” UK pagan family pagan mom at SpookyMrsGreen.com spooky family lifestyle blog.
Witchy Wednesday | Do My Haunted Dolls Dislike Me? 🪆✨

Do My Haunted Dolls Dislike Me?

Recently, we’ve been attempting to communicate with our dolls, hoping to uncover more of their personalities and perhaps the spirits that linger with them. My daughter and her friend even held a spontaneous séance one evening – and, to my surprise, they had some success. The dolls seemed to stir, their energy shifting, subtle responses flickering through the room.

Yet, when I joined in, everything went mysteriously quiet.

Was it coincidence? Or something more?

My energy is too strong

I can’t help but wonder if my energy is too strong, or too different. Do I scare the dolls, or perhaps the spirits attached to them? Or do they simply prefer the youthful, open energy of teenagers over that of a middle-aged mother?

It’s a strange feeling, being the one left out of the conversation with your own haunted dolls! But that’s the thrill of paranormal exploration – nothing is predictable, and every experiment brings more questions than answers.

For now, our porcelain newcomer rests in her box, patiently waiting for the right moment to introduce herself. And perhaps, just perhaps, she will be the one to break the silence with me.

Witchy Tip: If you work with haunted objects, don’t be disheartened if they don’t respond straight away. Spirits are like people – they have preferences, moods, and boundaries. Sometimes, the right person at the right moment is needed to make a connection.

What do you think?

What do you think – do my dolls dislike me, or are they just waiting for the right time?

🔮 Share your thoughts in the comments – I’d love to hear your haunted object stories!

Mummy Monday | Back to School with a Warm Heart 💜

It’s 1st September already, and that can only mean one thing in the UK: it’s time to go back to school! My daughters are both a mix of happy and sad about it. They’ve had such a fun-filled summer holiday, and honestly, I’m feeling a little emotional myself as we get back into routine.

We’ve packed so many special memories into the past few weeks that it’s hard to know where to begin…

Our Summer of Love and Adventure

This summer was one to remember. The highlight? A dream holiday to Skiathos, Greece, where we attended the beautiful seaside wedding of our close friends. It was our second family trip abroad and a truly magical experience that we will treasure forever.

The girls also spent a fun-packed week visiting their aunt, uncle, and young cousins. They had the best time exploring old castles and historic churches, running wild in soft play centres and outdoor adventure parks, and making the most of their childhood freedom. Back home, we enjoyed cosy movie nights, raucous board game battles, spontaneous shopping trips, and quiet, creative afternoons working on our family scrapbooks.

Yes, I’m a little exhausted. But in the best possible way! 😉

Why Summer Holidays Are Exhausting (And Magical) for Mums Like Me

Back to School – With a Little Help from Warmies

Now we’re preparing for the back to school routine here in the UK: early mornings, packed lunches, homework schedules, and all the big emotions that go with returning to the classroom.

My younger daughter, who just celebrated her 12th birthday, is starting her new school year with something extra special: a Warmies Sloth keyring that we were kindly sent to review. And let me tell you, this little cutie is a game changer.

As some of you may know, she lives with anxiety and struggles to settle at night. The first night she took her new sloth to bed, she reported back with a big smile and said that the soothing lavender scent and soft plush material really helped her drift off calmly. She now hangs the sloth on a pin board above her bed as a sleep aid and comforter.

But that’s not all! She also attaches it to her handbag during the day, and is super excited to take it to school this week and show her friends. It has already become a comforting companion through busy days and quiet nights.

If your child experiences anxiety, has sensory needs, or is neurodiverse, I highly recommend trying a Warmies keyring. They’re tactile, soothing, lightweight, and make the perfect portable comforter for school bags, car journeys, sleepovers – anywhere, really!

👉 Check out the Warmies Sloth Keyring here – it could make all the difference for your child this school year! Plus, get £5 off £20 spend with code: SUMMER5. Click here.

I’m holding onto that warm summer joy and bringing it into the autumn months ahead.

So here’s to a smooth transition, a heartfelt goodbye to summer, and a hopeful welcome to the term ahead. We’ve got this, mums!
