The Ethics of Fashion

Ethical fashion goes beyond just looking good; it’s about feeling good too. Small independent brands often operate on a smaller scale, allowing for greater control over the entire production process. From sourcing materials to manufacturing and distribution, ethical brands strive to minimize their environmental footprint and ensure fair treatment of workers.

By supporting these businesses, consumers contribute to a more sustainable and compassionate fashion industry. It’s a shift towards conscious consumerism, where each purchase becomes a step towards a better, more responsible world.

Smart spending: Finance Expert Reveals Top Tips about Christmas Budgeting

Have you begun your Christmas shopping? Perhaps you are putting it off because money is tight, and you can’t afford to take on more debt. How confident are people when it comes to speaking to their loved ones about setting a budget for Christmas gifts?

With the average Christmas budget per household said to be £642, it can be a sensitive and potentially awkward conversation at first. However, understanding your financial boundaries and that of those around you is key to ensuring everyone has a comfortable and enjoyable holiday season.

In this blog post I share advice from a money expert about how to talk to your loved ones about setting a limit to your Christmas gift shopping.

Top Tips for Spending Less this Christmas

Finance expert, Sarah Connelly, at Cashfloat has shared 10 ways to talk to your loved ones about setting a money limit this Christmas:

1. Choose the right time and place – Select a time when everyone involved is relaxed and not stressed, this might be a family meeting or a casual conversation over dinner. Make sure it’s a private setting, so everyone feels comfortable discussing their financial limits.

2. Be transparent and honest – Approach the conversation with honesty and transparency. Try to explain that you want to make sure everyone has a great Christmas without overspending and potentially creating financial stress in the aftermath.

3. Focus on the benefits – Highlight the advantages of setting a money limit, such as reducing financial strain, ensuring that everyone can participate, and fostering a spirit of sharing without financial pressure.

4. Listen to their concerns – Be open to hearing your loved ones’ concerns and preferences as they might have different ideas about what’s reasonable, and it’s important to listen to their perspectives. You may need to find a compromise that works for everyone.

5. Set clear guidelines – Be specific about the financial limit you propose. Discuss what the limit covers, such as gifts, decorations, and other holiday expenses, to make sure everyone understands the boundaries.

6. Create a budget – Encourage everyone to create a budget for Christmas spending and ensure this is the same for each person. This will help ensure that the money limit is adhered to and prevent anyone from feeling uncomfortable or left out.

7. Offer creative alternatives – Suggest alternative ways to celebrate the holidays that don’t involve spending money, such as homemade gifts or focusing on experiences rather than materialistic items.

8. Be flexible – Be willing to adjust the budget, if necessary, as circumstances can change, and it’s essential to be flexible and understanding of others’ financial situations as well as your own.

9. Respect each other’s choices – Understand that not everyone may agree with the idea of setting a budget, and that’s okay. Respect their choices and encourage them to participate in a way that feels comfortable for them.

10. Plan ahead – Start planning for Christmas early to avoid last-minute stress and overspending. By having a clear plan in place, this will help ensure everyone sticks to the agreed-upon limits, to enjoy a happy and memorable Christmas!

Have a Happy Christmas

Some people have already begun Christmas shopping, others will wait until they find the best Black Friday deals online. I tend to wait until late November, early December, but I always have a small budget for Christmas shopping since my wage as a writer is not generous and I simply cannot afford. My focus is always on our children first, then our niece and nephews, and then family and friends as much as my budget allows. Please share your Christmas money-saving tips in the comments and have a happy festive season!

The 20 Most Terrifying Jump Scares in Film History, According to Movie Buffs

Hooper finding a severed head in Jaws, Psycho’s shower scene, and Drew Barrymore seeing Ghostface for the first time in Scream – research reveals the 20 most terrifying moving jump scares.

20 Most Terrifying Jump Scares in Film History

Researchers quizzed the nation to reveal the biggest “jump scare” moments from our favourite films, with Hooper finding fishermen Ben Gardner’s boat (and his head) in the 1978 classic, Jaws taking the top spot, with 31 percent of the vote.

The shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 Psycho scooped second with 25 percent of the vote, while Dallas discovering the alien in an air shaft from Alien (18 percent) came third.

Carrie’s hand bursting out from her grave, in the 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s first novel (17 percent) and Drew Barrymore’s character, Casey seeing Ghostface for the first time in modern horror classic, Scream (17 percent) round off the top five in the list, which was released by Papa John’s, to celebrate their new Halloween shaped pizza, the Jack-o’-Lantern.

Other scenes to make the list, include Robbie’s clown doll coming to life in Poltergeist (16 percent), Pennywise coming out of the screen as the children watch an old scratchy film in scary movie, It (16 percent), Mills and Somerset discovering a body that isn’t quite dead in Se7en (12 percent) and the kitchen exploding in Paranormal Activity 2 (11 percent).

Modern Classics Make an Appearance

Modern classics also make an appearance in the top 20 with Beau’s noisy spaceship getting him taken by a monster (nine percent) in The Quiet Place and Cecilia pouring white paint from the attic and revealing the invisible man right in front of her in the 2020 film, The Invisible Man (seven percent).

Three quarters (73 percent) admit they end up jumping when they watch a scary movie, with one in three (36 percent) hiding behind a cushion to get through it. Modern Brits (18 to 29 years-old) are most on edge (82 percent), while over 60s (59 percent) are the most relaxed.

One in three (30 percent) say they grip their partner too hard, while 25 percent have ended up turning a film off because they were too freaked out. 21 percent have screamed so loud that their dog has jumped out of its skin.

We Love a Good Movie Scare!

Despite this, 66 percent thrive on being scared with one in three (32 percent) confessing they LOVE the jumpy bits in a movie. In contrast, a quarter (25 percent) hate them. Men are more likely to relish the scares (38 percent) compared to women (26 percent).

Almost half (47 percent) say that horror is their favourite genre, with women the biggest fans (85 percent compared to 82 percent for men).

Cardiff residents are the biggest horror fans in the UK, followed by London and Liverpool. Anyone wanting to avoid a scare should visit Cambridge, Bristol and Plymouth as they are the least likely to pop on a scary movie.

One in three (36 percent) like to snuggle down with their partner to watch a scary film, while a brave 18 percent prefer to watch them on their own.

Four in ten (38 percent) think there is nothing better than a take-away and a scary movie, with pizza (51 percent), Chinese (20 percent), burgers (15 percent) and curry (12 percent) are the top choices.

Pizza and Movie Time

A spokesperson for Papa Johns commented: “As pizza is revealed as the takeaway of choice to enjoy at home this Halloween (51%), we’re delighted to launch our limited-edition Jack-‘o-lantern pizza on the menu just in time for Halloween.”

Half (49 percent) love to give scares by jumping out in front of friends and family, however, one in five (15 percent) say their friends and family don’t find it funny.

Samhain: Honouring Ancestors in True Witch Tradition

Welcome, dear readers, to another enchanting journey into the world of witchcraft on SpookyMrsGreen. As the winds grow colder and the leaves fall from the trees, we approach the most magical time of the year, Samhain.

This ancient Celtic festival, celebrated from October 31st to November 1st, marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the dark half of the year. It’s a time when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest, and we can honour our ancestors in true witch tradition.

Image of a black cat sitting in a green Trick or Treat bowl on a tablecloth printed with colourful pumpkins, bats and spiders. There is a black cauldron on the table. Text reads, “Happy Halloween with @SpookyMrsGreen. Samhain blessings, my spooky friends!” SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
Happy Halloween with @spookymrsgreen

The History of Samhain

Samhain, pronounced “sow-in” or “sah-win,” has its roots in ancient Celtic traditions. The Celts believed that on this night, the boundaries between the living and the spirit world blurred, allowing spirits and ancestors to roam the earth. People lit bonfires and left out offerings to appease and welcome these visiting spirits. Samhain was a time for reflection, divination, and honouring those who had passed on.

Honouring Ancestors

As witches, Samhain holds a special place in our hearts. It’s a time to connect with our ancestors, seeking guidance and wisdom from those who came before us. Here are some ways to honour your ancestors during this sacred time:

1. Create an Ancestor Altar: Dedicate a space in your home for your ancestors. Place photos, mementos, or items that belonged to them on the altar. Light a white or black candle to symbolize their presence.

2. Offerings: Prepare a plate of their favourite foods and beverages as an offering. Leave it on your ancestor altar and share a meal with them. This is a beautiful way to connect and show respect.

3. Ancestor Meditation: Sit in a quiet, darkened room and meditate on your ancestors. Invite them into your thoughts and ask for guidance or protection. Trust your intuition and listen for their messages.

4. Divination: Use divination tools like tarot cards, scrying mirrors, or pendulums to seek guidance from your ancestors. Ask specific questions and be open to their answers.

5. Samhain Ritual: Perform a Samhain ritual to honour your ancestors. Light a candle for each ancestor you wish to remember and speak their names aloud. Express your gratitude for the wisdom and love they’ve bestowed upon you.

Witchy Traditions

Samhain is also a time for other witchy traditions. Here are a few ideas to enhance your celebration:

1. Divination: Use divination tools to gain insight into the coming year. Tarot readings, rune casting, and pendulum dowsing are popular choices.

2. Protection Spells: Create protective spells to ward off negative energies and unwanted spirits during this time when the veil is thin.

3. Bonfire Rituals: If you have access to a safe space for a bonfire, it can be a powerful way to connect with the spirit world. Dance around the fire, drum, and send your intentions to the universe.

4. Costumes: Dress in traditional witch attire or in costumes that honour your ancestors. This is a fun way to celebrate and connect with the spirit of Samhain.

Strengthen Our Connection

Samhain is a time of great power and magic in the world of witchcraft. By honouring our ancestors in true witch tradition, we not only pay our respects to those who came before us but also strengthen our connection to the spirit world. So, as the autumn winds whisper and the world takes on a darker, more mysterious hue, embrace the magic of Samhain and let your witchy practices light the way. Happy Samhain, dear readers, and may your celebrations be both enchanting and deeply meaningful.

One in Twenty Brits Believe their Office is Haunted

More than one in five Brits insist their house is haunted, while one in twenty believe there is a presence in their place of work, according to a new study.

Researchers surveyed the nation into all things paranormal, and discovered, as many as 69 percent believe ghosts, spirits and apparitions are real – and not just figments of our imagination.

In fact, according to the study, 38 percent are convinced they have seen something ghostly that unnerved them, with 51 percent of those insisting the presence was friendly.

Is Your House Haunted?

When it comes to their own homes, a fifth (21 percent) of respondents insist a spirit resides there, while one in ten (10 percent) believe a family member’s house is haunted.

More than one in 20 (6 percent), believe a neighbour’s house harbours a paranormal presence while the same number are adamant their office is haunted, and 4 percent even believe their car is haunted.

Additionally, 15 percent of Brits say they have woken in the middle of the night to see a ghostly figure sitting on the end of their bed, while 9 percent have felt a sudden or unexpected chill.

A further one in 20 (5 percent) insist they have been comforted by a presence or spirit.

New Supernatural Thriller

The survey was commissioned by Paramount+ to celebrate the launch of new supernatural thriller, The Burning Girls which is available to watch now.

Londoners (75 percent) are most likely to believe in the paranormal, followed by Mancunians (70 percent), while residents from Edinburgh (47 percent) and Cambridge (54 percent) are the least likely to believe.

The Burnings Girls sees Reverend Jack Brooks (Samantha Morton) and her daughter Flo (Ruby Stokes) move to the sleepy village of Chapel Croft, unaware of its dark secrets. After strong advice not to delve into the village’s past, Jack begins to question the disappearance of two teenage girls, who vanished thirty-years ago.

CJ Tudor, author of The Burning Girls and Executive Producer on the series, said: “I’ve always found belief in the supernatural interesting, and it’s intriguing that so many Brits are believers – with many claiming to have had their own experiences. The idea of things we don’t understand or there being something ‘other than this world’ will always fascinate people and draw them into stories which examine those beliefs.”

Do you Sleep with the Lights Off?

As many as 15 percent of those polled are routinely afraid to turn the lights off before going to bed, while 12 percent have walked a different route home at night to avoid walking past a spooky place or building.

The data also revealed 8 percent of Brits have been terrified to go to the loo on their own in someone else’s creepy house, whilst one in 10 (5 percent) have even dumped a partner because they thought where they lived was spooky.

Overall, as many as 30 percent believe the town they live in to be haunted, while 17 percent of those polled have been spooked by local ghost tales about where they live.

And according to the data, the nation’s passion for ghosts can even be seen in our TV and film choices with 69 percent admitting they love watching shows about the paranormal. Modern Brits (18 to 29 years old) are most likely to tune into a spooky show (77 percent) with over 60s, the least likely (57 percent).
