Redcliffe is a fictional town, and the location for a series of novels set in Cornwall, England. I was bemused to learn that there is a real town of Redcliffe in Australia, and I only discovered this fact after the publication of my first book Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel). My fictional town is actually modelled on the seaside town of Looe, with a little influence from the fishing village Polperro. I decided to call it Redcliffe because it sounded romantic, and I could work a folklore element into the series.
Jessica Stone and Elizabeth Gormond moved to Redcliffe and bought the local bookshop about five years ago. They loved the seaside town, and it was a refreshing change to their home city of Manchester. Jessica feels a strange connection to Redcliffe, but she never understands what that is until she meets the Mason brothers. She subsequently discovers that her friends are keeping secrets, her local pub is not the refuge it previously was, and Redcliffe forest is a dangerous place to be alone.
Location is key throughout my Redcliffe novels. In Love Kills (A Redcliffe Novel), we follow Jessica as she experiences intense spiritual and magical changes up on the cliff top above the Ship Inn. She experiences visions and meets ghosts from her past out on the seafront, and she cannot even find solace on the busy town pier with its gaudy amusement arcades, fast food outlets, and chattering tourists.
I am fascinated by Redcliffe, and the town is very real to me, having been inside my head for such a long time. It brings together elements from all the holiday places I have visited in the UK, and throws in a few romantic ideals along the way. In the third novel Love Redeems (A Redcliffe Novel), Jessica steps outside the town on her adventures, but she always returns home in the end.
