Urban Fantasy is a fairly new sub-genre of novels that has emerged during the past ten years as reader preferences have evolved, and the traditional label of ‘horror,’ ‘romance’ or ‘fantasy’ no longer applies.
Another sub-genre that has gained popularity is that of Paranormal Romance, which is the main category into which I classify the Redcliffe novels LGBT fantasy book series for adults. They are also, however, perfectly suited to Urban Fantasy.
#AtoZChallenge Day 21: Urban Fantasy
The contemporary paranormal reader, usually female, generally aged between 18 and 35 (ish), wants to read stories featuring strong, romantic, female leads. During past decades women have been schooled and disciplined to be independent, to focus only on business, and to be feminists. There was no place for romance or romantic nonsense when a woman had a career to carve and a world to change.
Life isn’t that simple, however, and women do enjoy romance, love, and even sex! We have reclaimed our emotions, asserted our preferences, and now expect to find those elements replicated in our favourite novels and short stories. Urban fantasy allows for romance, passion and love, alongside adventure, drama and action. Love Hurts (A Redcliffe Novel) is a perfect example of this. It starts out fairly tame, reflecting the normal human life of a single woman.
Continuing into Love Kills (A Redcliffe Novel) and the urban fantasy element steps up a notch. Jessica discovers she is a witch, and sets about learning how to use her powers and protect herself from further harm. She has to become a protector, a saviour, and even a warrior in order to preserve the new life that opens up. The adventure concludes in Love Redeems (A Redcliffe Novel), but this is by no means the end of Jessica’s story. There will be more Redcliffe novels, and many more adventures to share.
Now I invite you to check out my fellow #atozchallenge bloggers. You will find some weird and wonderful articles, and we can all make new friends. See you tomorrow for the next letter in our #atozchallenge.
