The Right Time
The question of when to start using deodorant doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all answer. It’s primarily dependent on your daughter’s individual needs and development. On average, girls may begin to experience these changes between the ages of 9 and 16, with some starting earlier or later. Keep an eye out for signs such as body odour or increased sweating and initiate a gentle conversation about personal hygiene.
Having “The Talk”
Approaching the topic of personal hygiene can be sensitive, but it’s essential to maintain open communication with your daughter. Emphasize that these changes are entirely normal and part of growing up. Share your own experiences, if you feel comfortable, to create a supportive atmosphere. Encourage her to embrace her unique journey and assure her that using deodorant is a standard practice for many teenagers.
Choosing the Right Product
When selecting a deodorant for your daughter, consider her skin sensitivity and personal preferences. Opt for a gentle, hypoallergenic formula to minimize the risk of irritation. As November draws to a close and the festive period begins, there’s a new batch of gardening tasks that need to be done to make sure that your garden is as healthy as it can be for the next growing season.

A good clean-up
One of the first tasks you’ll need to do before anything else is getting your garden into tip top shape to make every other task much easier! Leaf litter and other organic debris should be gathered and put into your compost bin, along with any plants that haven’t lasted through the autumn – as long as they didn’t succumb to any diseases.
This is also a good time to clean down patios and brickwork, ideally with a pressure washer if you have one but there’s nothing wrong with soapy water and some elbow grease. Doing this later on when the weather is colder can lead to ice, which obviously poses a health hazard, so it’s a job better done sooner rather than later. Patios and pathways that are left uncleaned for too long can accumulate dirt and moss that can make them much easier to slip on, so get them cleaned not only to have them looking fresher but for your own safety as well.

Pulling up and cutting back
Now that you’ve got a tidy garden and can see what you’re working with, you can start on your groundwork. Any perennials you have planted will need cutting back to the soil line, allowing the base of the plant to remain dormant until spring returns again while you add your cuttings to your compost bin. Any weeds will need to be pulled up by the roots, ensuring that no part of the plants are left in the soil. With most of your trees and shrubs also being bare, or at least devoid of most of their leaves, this can also be a great time to get pruning to keep them in shape. Not only does this promote healthy growth early next year, but also means that they’ll look their best!
Be ready for the weather
British weather isn’t exactly known for being the most pleasant, and the colder months only make this more apparent. If you can store your outdoor furniture inside, for example in a garage or shed, you’ll absolutely want to, as the damp conditions are ideal for promoting mould, rust, and all-round damage to your tables and chairs. If you don’t have anywhere to store them, invest in a good waterproof covering that you can securely fasten to try and keep the elements out as best you can.
It’s also worth picking up some horticultural fleeces for when colder weather and frost is forecast to minimise the damage done to your soil and the plants within. Late November is also a great time to put some mulch down on your beds, trapping in the last of the heat and moisture to keep your soil as healthy as possible and giving you less trouble – and work – when the weather warms back up!

Welcome, fellow dog lovers and pet enthusiasts, to SpookyMrsGreen.com! Today, I want to share a personal and, at times, challenging chapter of our lives as we care for our beloved rescue dog—a unique blend of Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Pomeranian.
Over the past six months, we’ve faced unexpected health struggles with our furry friend, leading us to adapt and redefine our lives to ensure his well-being. Unravelling the Mystery
Our journey began in April with mysterious bouts of pain in Marley’s lower back and hind legs. After an initial diagnosis of mild hip dysplasia, it became evident that there was more to the story. Our vet was concerned about the level of pain Marley was experiencing compared to the mild evidence of the condition that showed up in x-rays. She recommended that we put Marley onto a strict diet, reducing his food intake by one third, and keeping up a steady program of daily exercise. This seemed to work well up until November. A recent episode left Marley unable to walk, prompting a visit to the local pet hospital and an MRI scan, revealing a ruptured disc near his spinal column.
The Diagnosis
The MRI results painted a clearer picture—fluid compressing the spinal column, causing severe pain and affecting Marley’s nervous system. The recommended surgery to remove this fluid, unfortunately, comes with a hefty price tag that we, regrettably, cannot afford, even with pet insurance cover. Faced with this challenge, we had to explore alternative options for our dear canine companion.
Respite Care
Taking our vet’s advice to heart, we’ve embarked on a journey of respite care for our dog. This involves at least four weeks of confinement to his crate, with supervised visits to the garden for toileting purposes only. Our once-active and reactive dog must now refrain from running, jumping, climbing, or getting too excited—activities that could worsen his condition and most probably caused it in the first place. I am now seeking activities to relieve boredom for Marley that won’t involve too many treats or encourage him to jump around and get excited, which unfortunately is a natural element of his personality.

The Challenges Ahead
Navigating the rehabilitation process poses unique challenges, especially considering our dog’s reactive nature. Walking, a beloved activity for both Marley and me, will be put on hold for at least a couple of months. The vet has warned that similar issues may arise with other spinal discs, making it crucial for us to establish a new routine that accommodates his condition.
A New Normal
At six years old, our dog is effectively disabled, and our family is committed to providing him with the care and support he needs. No more steep hill climbs on our family walks, as we embrace a new normal that revolves around his well-being and recovery. I am exploring the possibility of using a dog pushchair, so if anyone has suggestions or advice, please share in the comments. Marley weighs around 17kg so it looks like we need to spend a decent amount of money to choose a pushchair that will accommodate him. My immediate challenge is to still do our annual family visit to Talacre Beach in North Wales on New Year’s Day. I’m hoping that we can take Marley with us as usual, but he won’t be able to walk, and he is too heavy to carry for longer than a few minutes, although I’m sure my husband would happily carry him anywhere he needs to go!
