I recently read ā€œDemon Copperheadā€ by Barbara Kingsolver for my local book club, and I borrowed the book from my local library.

My Review of Ā ā€œDemon Copperheadā€ by Barbara Kingsolver

Phew, what a tome! OK, so this is a retelling of “David Copperfield” by Charles Dickens. I haven’t read that one, but it is on my list. I enjoyed ā€œDemon Copperhead.ā€ The book hooked me in from the start and gave me a “Grapes of Wrath” vibe. There was some interesting and enlightening social history woven into the story and I could really identify with the characters even though I am British and have never been addicted to drugs. I suppose I identified with Mrs Peggot the most as she seemed like a kindred spirit!

Anyway, I fell in love with Demon as I read his story, and the book made me laugh more than it made me cry. I did get a little bit bored about halfway through the book and it seemed to drag, but then I reminded myself that this was the story of a boy’s childhood through to reaching 18 and it wasn’t going to be told in a few hundred pages. I am glad that I persevered and read it to the end.

Despite his tragic circumstances, Demon’s story does have a happy ending, at least as far as reaching adulthood goes. You like to think that he goes on to live a long and happy life. I enjoyed reading this book mostly, but it didn’t quite hit the deep spot in my heart.

For a generation growing up in this world, at the heart of the modern opioid crisis, addiction isn’t an abstraction, it’s neighbours, parents, and friends. ‘Family’ could mean love, or reluctant foster care. For Demon, born on the wrong side of luck, the affection and safety he craves is as remote as the ocean he dreams of seeing one day. The wonder is in how far he’s willing to travel to try and get there.

Suffused with truth, anger and compassion, Demon Copperhead is an epic tale of love, loss and everything in between.

My Review of Ant & Dec’s Limitless Win Board Game

It took us a while to work out how to play this game. My children and I havenā€™t watched the TV quiz show so that probably didnā€™t help, but we read the instructions and discovered that you can play the game using an app or just as an old-fashioned board game. We chose the latter.

Once we set up the game, we had to play a ā€œlife builderā€ round. This is where you answer questions on a timer and earn points for each correct answer. The points then transfer into lives that you use to play the main Limitless Win board game. It is easy to lose your lives and we had a couple of very short rounds of the game before we got the hang of how it works.

While it seemed a bit confusing and complicated, we did enjoy playing the game and I would recommend it for a group of adults. My daughters are teen and tween aged, so they struggled to answer some of the questions. I think I enjoyed the game more than they did, and I look forward to playing it with my husband one weekend soon.  

About the Game: Ant & Dec’s Limitless Win Board Game

Just like the TV show, this board game challenges players to climb the money ladder higher than their opponents by answering general knowledge trivia questions. Suitable for ages 8 and above, it’s the perfect way to bring family and friends together for a fun-filled game night.

A game of two stages

The game is divided into two stages: the Life Builder round and Stage Two.
