Did you ever dream of being a pirate and finding buried treasure, enjoyed scavenger hunts as a kid or perhaps just love being outside getting some fresh air?

Metal detecting is a trending hobby, enjoyed by people of various ages and backgrounds, made even more popular by shows like “The Curse of Oak Island,” and others.  

Imagine my delight when I was invited to review the X-TERRA PRO treasure detector by Minelab. This is one serious piece of metal-detecting kit! Read my product review to see what I thought of the X-TERRA PRO from Minelab and if we can use it in the UK.

My Review of X-TERRA PRO from Minelab

I have never used a metal detector before, and I was very excited to get my hands on the X-TERRA PRO. My daughter (who fancies herself as a pirate) was also eager to join the fun and help me set up our new toy to play with in the garden. We were happy to discover that the X-TERRA PRO was very easy to assemble, and we had it ready to use within about ten minutes of opening the box. I downloaded a user manual from the website as per guidance from the enclosed product leaflet, and away we went. My daughter was off down the garden seeking buried treasure.

There are some cool features on the X-TERRA PRO. It is lightweight and easy to carry, even for a short person like me. You can adjust the height to suit you. There is a convenient hip rest to take the strain off your arm while holding the device. And then there is the tech. It took us a while to work out the different sounds and what they meant, and which setting was best for our garden, but we figured it out pretty quickly and had fun making noises with the metal detector. We brought it into the house and tried it out across the floor, chuckling when our cat followed the metal detector and tried to play with it.

The X-TERRA PRO has different settings depending on whether you are searching on a beach, in a field, or in a public park where it might detect discarded rubbish that you don’t want to dig up. It tells you how far down you might need to dig for the item it detects. It tells you the location of the item in relation to where you are holding the metal detector scanner. And it is waterproof to 5M, so it’s perfect for treasure hunting in the UK!

We didn’t find buried treasure 

Unfortunately, we learned that there is no hoard of Roman treasure in our garden as we had hoped. But we did find a necklace that one of my children left outside recently so that was a bonus. Now we need to take our X-TERRA PRO treasure detector out into the local land and see what we can discover. But therein lies the challenge. We can use a metal detector on beaches in the UK that are owned by the Crown, but not on beaches that are listed as Sites of Scientific Interest. We cannot use it on any public land without permission from the authorities, and the same naturally applies to private land. I found a useful website with tips about metal detecting in the UK, so I will explore our options.

I have learned that there is a local metal detecting group that hold regular meetings on Sundays where people can hunt for treasure on land where they have prior permission to dig, so I might try and join that group. We can go treasure hunting if we put our minds to it.
