Witchy Wednesday: Family Ghost Hunting in Middlewich

Ghost hunting has long been a favourite pastime for paranormal enthusiasts, but what happens when you take it up as a family? My daughters and I have been exploring the unseen world together, using modern ghost-hunting apps and traditional spiritual tools to see what spirits might want to communicate with us.

Our latest adventure has led us to some intriguing patterns right here in our hometown of Middlewich, Cheshire.

A mysterious, foggy night-time scene in Middlewich, Cheshire, with an old canal and a historic stone bridge. Soft glowing orbs of light hover near the canal suggesting that ghosts lurk in the shadows at SpookyMrsGreen spooky family lifestyle blog.

Our Ghost Hunting Journey

After attending our first family ghost hunt, we were inspired to bring the experience home. We downloaded the Spirit Talker app on our phones and tablets, curious to see if we could pick up any messages from spirits. Over time, we noticed that certain words and phrases kept repeating—especially when we were close to home. One particularly interesting phrase was “Are you an investigator?”, which my daughter received twice in different sessions!

Other messages, such as “I don’t mean to scare you” and “I will protect you,” made us wonder whether we had a friendly spirit looking out for us. The responses seemed to change when we left Middlewich, suggesting that whatever we were communicating with might be tied to the town rather than our haunted dolls or personal energy.

Middlewich’s Haunted History

Middlewich is a historic town with roots going back to Roman times, and it has its share of ghostly legends. Some of the notable local hauntings include:

  • Chadwick Fields – Mysterious voices, footsteps, and slamming doors have been reported.
  • Hannah’s Walk – A spectral presence is believed to linger by the canal, especially on foggy days.
  • Mill Lane – People often feel watched near the old mill weir.
  • Mystery Wood – Strange occurrences and unexplained noises have led to tales of restless spirits.

Could one of these spirits be reaching out to us through the Spirit Talker app? Or is there another unknown entity trying to make contact? These are questions we continue to explore.

Family-Friendly Ghost Hunting Tips

If your family is curious about the paranormal, here are some safe and fun ways to begin your own ghost-hunting adventures:

  • Start with Research – Learn about your local area’s history and any reported hauntings. Knowing the background can help you understand potential spiritual encounters.
  • Use Simple Equipment – You don’t need fancy ghost-hunting gear. Try apps like Spirit Talker, an EMF meter, or even just a notepad to document experiences.
  • Be Respectful – Whether you believe in ghosts or not, always approach investigations with a respectful attitude. Spirits, if present, deserve kindness and patience.
  • Test for Patterns – If you receive repeated words or phrases, take notes and see if they relate to a specific place or historical event.
  • Trust Your Instincts – If a location or message makes you uncomfortable, leave the area or end the session. Ghost hunting should be an enjoyable experience, not a frightening one.
  • Have Fun and Stay Safe – Always investigate with a buddy (or in our case, as a family!), bring a torch if exploring at night, and never trespass on private property.
