What To Do In Sicily

If you think that Sicily is a sophisticated, relaxing, and culturally inspiring vacation spot, you’d be right. It may not be one for young families where attractions are concerned but it offers plenty when you want a holiday that totally rejuvenates you. There are plenty of things to do and see while you’re in Sicily.

If you’re planning a holiday there soon, you’ve come to the right place. Here are some of the wonderful things you can do while in Sicily.

Pixabay

Mount Etna

As one of the oldest and most active volcanoes in Europe, it’s no surprise that Mount Etna has frequent visitors. It’s a spectacle to behold and offers magnificent views in every direction. There are excursions to the Mount itself or there are trips to viewing points where you can see all that Mount Etna has to offer without having to physically climb it.

If you are planning to climb to the summit, be sure to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Pay attention to what your guide tells you so you remain safe throughout the trip.

Valle dei Templi

If you enjoy exploring history and culture, this is a must see. The temples are built in recognition of many Greek gods, including Hera, Hercules, and Zeus. You can take your time and walk through the site or there is the option of using electric scooters to zip through.

Some have compared the site to the Acropolis in Greece but the site isn’t quite as busy. Depending on what time of year you go to Sicily, you may find that you can walk through this site with very few other visitors.

Sicilian Villas

There are many Sicilian villas to choose from that will allow you to see the best of Sicily while relaxing in privacy. You can find the best luxury villas in Sicily on my-rental-homes.com. Whether you’re looking for a private pool, hot tub, or just somewhere that’s in reach of all the local attractions, you can personalize your experience.

It also helps to find a villa if a large group of you are traveling together. A villa offers everything that each person could want without having to make too many compromises.

Riserva Naturale Dello Zingaro

If sandy beaches and clear waters are what you’re looking for, Riserva Naturale Dello Zingaro is the place to be. There’s nothing better than taking time out on the beach but this place takes that to the next level. The waters are so clear and beautiful they’ll transcend you to another dimension.

Norman Palace

If you want to know more about the history of Sicily, Norman Palace is an ideal stop on your trip. This breathtaking building traces the history of Sicily from as far back as the twelve century. The Palatine Chapel is akin to the Sistine Chapel and you’ll get a sense of the culture through the beautifully designed architecture and artwork.

Pet Geneticists Visualized Dogs in 10,000 Years

Nature never stays the same. Birds, bugs, animals, humans, plants – every species evolves, adapting to the ever-changing environment with a single goal of survival.

These changes are not random, as evolution is an intricate process, influenced by a variety of factors, like natural selection, access to food, migration, crossbreeding, and the temperatures outside.

In 10,000 years, we as humans won’t look the same way either, so our looks are temporary on a historical scale. But this story is not about us.

Image of Marley the Staffy cross Pomeranian rescue dog and Nora the domestic short hair black cat lying a soft dog bed together. Text reads "Dog and Cat Mom @SpookyMrsGreen” with paw prints next to the text. Pet blogger UK. SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.

See Your Dog in 10,000 Years

Dogs. How do you imagine your four-pawed baby would look in 10,000 years? Will it be forever encased in some fabulous spacesuit, or will it have wings and a horn? A unicorn Golden Retriever – now, that’s an idea! These are just fantasies, of course, and we are here to talk about canine development from a scientific perspective.

Don’t worry, Basepaws vets and researchers have already done this work for you and visualized the future of dogs in line with the two major scenarios of the Earth’s future: Global Warming and the new Ice Age. Of course, we can’t discard the third option, that of the human-made Armageddon, but breeds would hardly matter then. Nothing would.

Neural networks became our time machine, and they did a great job we must say. Let’s have a closer look.

Scenario 1. Global Warming

Here’s what Dr. Ernie Ward, Veterinary Medical Lead at Basepaws, says about science behind the changes pictured below:

“Over the next few hundred to thousand years, global warming is predicted to create significant challenges for humans wishing to feed and care for dogs. This warming and resource scarcity will likely lead to a reduction in a dog’s body mass and size in an effort to meet physiological needs for food and water. Smaller dogs require less food, energy, and water, and smaller bodies are potentially easier to cool. In addition, reduced skin surface area may also protect dogs from harmful ultraviolet radiation effects.

Since there will be less need to keep a dog’s body warm, dogs will evolve towards less or almost no fur and light-coloured thin skin. Wider ears can help with thermoregulation, leading to dogs with relatively larger heads and ears than today’s mixed breeds. As climate change leads to increased exposure to UV light, many dogs’ eyes may become darker, recessed, and more hooded for extra sunlight protection. Many dogs may evolve to become more active at night or during cooler periods. Water scarcity may lead to changes in metabolism to conserve body water and allow dogs to go extended periods without rehydrating.”

So, this is how a Poodle, a Golden Retriever, a Greyhound, and a Pomeranian would look like 10,000 years down the road, if the global warming scenario takes place.

Artist depiction of a Poodle, a Golden Retriever, a Greyhound, and a Pomeranian in 10,000 years.

Scenario 2. Ice Age

Here’s what Dr. Ward has to say about the other scenario:

“While it’s easy to think that if our future is colder, we’d expect to see larger, furrier dogs, it may not be so straightforward. If a New Ice Age comes, keeping a healthy body temperature becomes a physiological priority for warm-blooded dogs. As you’d expect, evolution may create dogs with dense or thick fur and longer hair, often darker in colour, in an effort to preserve their core body temperature. Science is divided on whether colder temperatures would lead to larger or smaller canine bodies. We can expect dogs to evolve with more body fat to insulate against the cold and serve as an energy reservoir for maintaining body temperature. Dogs may adapt more wolf-like characteristics, potentially competing with humans for food and shelter. Future Ice Age dogs would need strong muscles for hunting and running, so we can expect to see some strong and well-muscled breeds.”

Sustainable Living: The Power of Choosing Products That Last

In a world inundated with fast-paced consumerism and disposable goods, the concept of buying products that are built to last might seem like a revolutionary idea. However, in recent years, there has been a growing movement toward sustainability and conscious consumerism.

One key player in this movement is Buy Me Once, an advocate for durable and long-lasting products. In this blog post, we’ll explore the importance of choosing products that stand the test of time and living more sustainably.

#WitchyWednesday Special Offers. Blog Header SpookyMrsGreen.com mindful parenting and modern pagan lifestyle blog.
#WitchyWednesday Special Offers

The Disposable Culture:

In the era of fast fashion and rapidly advancing technology, many products are designed with planned obsolescence, meaning they are intentionally made to have a limited lifespan. This culture of disposability not only puts a strain on our planet’s resources but also contributes to the growing issue of environmental pollution.

The Environmental Impact:

Every time we dispose of a product, we contribute to the environmental burden. From non-biodegradable plastics to electronic waste, the consequences of our throwaway culture are far-reaching. Choosing products that are made to last can significantly reduce the amount of waste we generate, leading to a positive impact on our environment.

The Buy Me Once Initiative:

Enter Buy Me Once, a platform dedicated to curating a selection of products designed for longevity. By partnering with brands that prioritize quality and durability, Buy Me Once is championing a shift away from the disposable culture. Their commitment to sustainability aligns with the growing demand for products that not only meet our needs but also leave a minimal ecological footprint.

Exclusive Offer: £5 Off Any £60 Order

As a reader of this blog, you have the opportunity to join the sustainable movement and make a difference in your own consumption habits. Our affiliate partner, Buy Me Once, is offering an exclusive discount of £5 off any £60 order. Simply use the code 5OFFPLEASE at checkout to take advantage of this special offer and start your journey toward more sustainable living.

The Benefits of Choosing Quality Over Quantity:

1. Cost-Effective in the Long Run: While the upfront cost of durable products might be higher, their longevity often translates to savings in the long run. Investing in quality items means fewer replacements and repairs, ultimately saving you money over time.

2. Reduced Environmental Footprint: Choosing products that last means fewer items end up in landfills. By minimizing waste, you contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.

3. Supporting Ethical Practices: Many brands that focus on durability also prioritize ethical production practices. By supporting these companies, you contribute to a more sustainable and ethical supply chain.

Small steps towards a sustainable future

In a world where consumer choices can have significant impacts on the environment, opting for products that are made to last is a small yet powerful step toward a more sustainable future. Buy Me Once, with its exclusive offer of £5 off any £60 order, provides an excellent opportunity to start making conscious choices that benefit both you and the planet. Let’s embrace the power of longevity and make a positive impact on our world—one durable purchase at a time.

Embracing Yule: A Pagan Celebration Rooted in Tradition

As the winter winds sweep across the land, bringing with them the chill of the season, many of us turn our thoughts toward festive celebrations and the warmth of the holiday season.

But did you know that long before the advent of Christmas, pagans were already revelling in their own winter festivities, centred around the sacred celebration of Yule?

In this #WitchyWednesday exploration, we’ll delve into the rich tapestry of pagan traditions that have woven their way through history, influencing how we celebrate today’s winter holidays. From Norse Winter Solstice traditions to Celtic folklore, and the significance of the Yule log, let’s unravel the threads that connect us to our ancient, earth-centred roots.

Norse Winter Solstice Traditions

Yule has its roots in the ancient Norse celebrations of the Winter Solstice, a time when the longest night gives way to the gradual return of the sun. The Norse believed that during this time, the Wild Hunt—a ghostly procession led by Odin himself—would traverse the sky, marking the transition between the old year and the new. To honour this celestial event, the Norse would feast, make offerings to their gods, and kindle bonfires to symbolize the returning light.

Incorporating Norse traditions into modern celebrations might involve creating a symbolic representation of the Wild Hunt, perhaps through artwork or decorations featuring Odin and his spectral entourage. Lighting candles or a bonfire can also pay homage to the ancient Norse practice of inviting the sun’s return.

Celtic Folklore and the Evergreen Connection

The Celts, too, had their own winter celebrations, deeply rooted in nature and the cycles of the earth. Evergreen plants, such as holly and ivy, were revered for their ability to thrive amidst winter’s harsh conditions, symbolizing resilience and the promise of renewal. The Druids, ancient Celtic priests, would bring evergreen boughs into their homes as a reminder that life endures even in the darkest times.

To honour this tradition, consider decorating your space with holly and ivy or crafting wreaths using these timeless symbols of vitality. Infuse your home with the earthy scents of evergreen, connecting with the ancient Celtic belief in the sacredness of the natural world.

The Yule Log: Symbol of Light and Unity

One of the most enduring symbols of Yule is the Yule log. In medieval times, families would select a large log, typically from a fruit-bearing tree, and burn it in the hearth. The Yule log symbolized the returning sun, and its ashes were believed to have protective and fertilizing properties for the land.

Incorporating the Yule log into your modern celebrations can be a powerful way to connect with the past. Consider crafting your own Yule log or, if you have a fireplace, burning a specially chosen log while reflecting on the significance of the season. Collecting the ashes and spreading them in your garden can be a symbolic act of fertility and growth, tying back to the ancient belief in the Yule log’s magical properties.

Modern Pagan Values for Festive Celebrations

As we explore these ancient traditions, it’s important to recognize that pagan values extend beyond specific rituals or symbols. Modern paganism often emphasizes a deep connection to nature, community, and the cycles of life. To incorporate these values into your festive celebrations, consider:

1. Sustainable Practices: Choose environmentally friendly decorations, minimize waste, and opt for locally sourced, organic products.

2. Community Engagement: Celebrate with friends and family, fostering a sense of community and togetherness.

3. Mindful Reflection: Take moments to connect with nature, whether through a winter walk, meditation, or simply pausing to appreciate the beauty of the season.

By embracing the ancient roots of Yule and infusing our modern celebrations with these timeless pagan values, we can create a holiday season that is not only festive but also deeply meaningful and connected to the earth. As we light our candles and kindle our Yule logs, let us remember the wisdom of our ancestors and celebrate the magic that resides in the turning of the seasons. Blessed Yule!

Signs of a Good Neighbour Revealed

New research has revealed as many as three quarters of Brits (70 percent) insist their community is closer than it ever has been before.

In fact, four in ten (40 percent) think the cost-of-living crisis has helped bring their community together, while 70 percent say they have grown closer due to the challenges of the last few years.

Signs of a Good Neighbour Revealed

The survey, carried out by retirement community, McCarthy Stone, has revealed a definitive list of signs you’re a good neighbour, with lending milk or sugar (35 percent), pet sitting (24 percent), bringing food when you’re sick (20 percent) and always saying hello (70 percent) making the list.

Checking your home when you’re on holiday (60 percent), signing for deliveries (55 percent) and alerting you to potential security issues in the area (43 percent), came high on the list.

While more modern signs include making a WhatsApp group for your street (14 percent) and sharing Netflix passwords (five percent), according to the poll of 2,000.

Overall, three quarters (73 percent) say they are friends with their neighbours, with one in three (30 percent) describing their neighbour as one of their best friends.

Chat to your Next-Door Neighbour

Brits chat to their next-door-neighbours on average 10 times per week, talking about the weather (57 percent), local news (50 percent), family life (41 percent), security (28 percent) and work (25 percent).

But despite 37 percent believing a good neighbour checks on elderly relatives, three quarters (75 percent) still worry about older people in their community.

A spokesperson for McCarthy Stone, which commissioned the poll to coincide with the launch of its new affordable shared ownership offering to help more older people to experience the benefits of Retirement Living, commented: “This research shows that Brits are rallying around their neighbours and sticking together.”

“Companionship and a sense of connection is incredibly important to our mental wellbeing at any age, but especially for older people who may be living on their own, or less mobile than they once were. This is exactly why we wanted to make our retirement communities more accessible to more of the nation’s retirees, through our affordable shared ownership scheme”.
