I frowned.

“Danny rules by fear,” I said, “Surely they don’t stay in the pack if this is how he treats them?”

 “It isn’t all bad, Jess,” Simon said quietly, “We like to play. Our bodies are strong and resilient, and sometimes we like to push the limits of what we can endure. It makes us stronger in battle.”

“But what about your minds?” I asked in wonder.

Simon smiled.

“Danny always makes it better afterwards,” he said, gazing past me at some memory, “You know that.”
