Marcus Arcabiasco, a money-saving expert at Bank Locations, has shared 5 tips that will help you save money and celebrate Halloween with all the spooky fun, but without the haunting expense. 

1. DIY, Pre-Loved and Last Year’s Costumes — Saving Around £45: Instead of splurging on store-bought costumes, get creative and make your own or wear what you wore a couple of years ago if you still have it. “Raid your closet for clothing and accessories that can be repurposed into Halloween outfits, before it’s too late. 

You can always find inspiration online and turn everyday items into fantastic costumes, saving you around £15-£20 per costume. For a family of three, brand new costumes could cost around £20 per costume meaning a bill of £60 for your family. By revamping old costumes or buying preloved options where a costume can start at around £5 on marketplaces like eBay.

You’re saving at least £45 using what you have and getting little essentials or buying something once owned,” says the expert. 

2. DIY Decor — Saving Around £20: Decorating your home for Halloween doesn’t have to be costly, but often does get expensive for those who can’t get enough of spooky trinkets. Look for budget-friendly options at discount stores, including thrift shops, or even your local dollar charity shop.

DIY decorations using materials you already have, like old bed sheets, mason jars, or last year’s decorations will help you save money.  By opting for thrifty décor, you can easily save £10-£20 on your budget,” says the expert. 

3. Party on Your Own Plot — Saving Around £30: Hosting a Halloween gathering? Make it a potluck event and entertaining your guests at home will save you money on venue fees. 

“You can ask your guests to bring a spooky dish or drink for the occasion. This not only eases the financial burden on the host but also allows everyone to contribute their favourite Halloween-themed foods. You can save at least £30 on food and beverages,” adds the expert. 

4. Don’t Overdo Treats — Saving Around £15: Don’t wait until the last minute to buy Halloween treats and be careful not to overdo it.

“Keep an eye out for early sales and bulk discounts at your local shops or look to places like Amazon where you can buy themed sweets in bigger quantities. You could also consider buying generic or store-brand treats, as they’re often more budget-friendly than name brands and save around £15,” the expert says.

5. Entertainment Expense — Saving Around £10: While haunted houses and spooky attractions are alluring, their tickets can be pricey and sometimes cost anywhere starting from £10.

“It’s best to opt for free or low-cost Halloween entertainment, such as watching horror movies at home, visiting local community events, or enjoying a spooky night in with friends. By limiting your entertainment expenses, you can save at least another £10,” the expert advises.
