I read “My Brilliant Friend” for my local book club. Read on to see my thoughts and where you can buy the book.
My Review of “My Brilliant Friend”
I am sorry to say that this is another book club book that I didn’t enjoy. It seemed to take forever for me to read this one as I just couldn’t connect with the characters, and I found the overall story boring and lacking entertainment value. The one thing I did like about this novel was the descriptions of its location, and the social history that we can learn about Italy during the post-war the time period, but that was about it. I will not be reading the other books in this series.
About the Book
A modern masterpiece from one of Italy’s most acclaimed authors, “My Brilliant Friend” is a rich, intense, and generous-hearted story about two friends, Elena and Lila. Ferrante’s inimitable style lends itself perfectly to a meticulous portrait of these two women that is also the story of a nation and a touching meditation on the nature of friendship. Through the lives of these two women, Ferrante tells the story of a neighbourhood, a city, and a country as it is transformed in ways that, in turn, also transform the relationship between her two protagonists.
