Lammas (or Lughnasadh) is the first of the harvest festivals in the Pagan Wheel of the Year, and it always brings a special energy to our home. This year, it was even more meaningful—because we celebrated my younger daughter’s twelfth birthday right in the heart of this golden, magical season.
As a family, we’ve always found creative ways to blend modern life with our spiritual path. Our Lammas celebrations are not overly elaborate, but they are heartfelt, and this year they took on a deeper resonance as my daughter grows into her teen years with her own blossoming sense of self.
✨ What is Lammas?
Lammas (1st August) marks the beginning of the grain harvest. The word itself comes from “Loaf Mass,” and it was traditionally a time when people baked bread from the first harvested grain and offered it in gratitude. In Pagan and Wiccan traditions, we celebrate the bounty of the Earth, give thanks for what we’ve gathered—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—and prepare for the waning of summer.
It’s a time of reflection, community, and gentle abundance. And for parents, it can be a beautiful moment to pause and acknowledge the growth within our children and ourselves.
🌻 A Birthday Blessed by the Sun
This year, my daughter asked for two very specific birthday presents: a professional camera and Heartstopper merchandise. She’s diving into creative hobbies and expressing herself more freely than ever, and I couldn’t be prouder. I see her stepping into her identity with courage and curiosity—just as the Wheel turns and we enter the second half of the year, full of change and transformation.
We kept the birthday celebration low-key but meaningful. We gathered in our garden under the soft summer sun, lit a candle on a homemade cake, and gave thanks for the year that has passed. We spoke quiet blessings, made wishes, and toasted the occasion with a little bottle of mead (for the grown-ups, of course!).
🛍️ Affiliate tip: If you’d like to try something a little different for your own Lammas celebration, the English Heritage Shop has a beautiful range of mead available right now. Mead is perfect for toasting the season or adding a historical flair to your festivities!
🍞 Simple Lammas Rituals for Families
If you’re looking for easy ways to honour Lammas with children or teens, here are some of our favourite traditions:
1. Bake Together
Bake a loaf of bread, some cupcakes, or even a simple fairy cake. As you mix the ingredients, talk about what each family member is grateful for, and what they’d like to ‘harvest’ in the months ahead.
2. Nature Walk and Foraging
Take a walk in nature and gather fallen leaves, feathers, flowers or herbs. Create a Lammas altar or seasonal centrepiece at home with your finds.
3. Write Gratitude Notes
Each family member writes down one thing they’re thankful for and one goal or dream they’re working toward. These can be folded and placed in a jar or burned in a mini fire ceremony (safely, of course).
4. Make Sun Crafts
Craft sun wheels from twigs, or paint with warm yellows and oranges. These are great activities for younger kids and can also be adapted for older children with more creative flair.
5. Offer a Birthday Blessing
If you have a family member with a Lammas birthday like we do, turn the celebration into a dual ritual—giving thanks for their growth and offering blessings for the year ahead.
🔥 Why Lammas Matters to Me
In a world that often feels rushed and digital, celebrating the Wheel of the Year grounds me. It offers a rhythm to family life that is both ancient and comforting. My daughters may not follow every tradition I do, but they understand the intention behind it: to honour the Earth, honour each other, and stay connected to the magic of everyday life.
Lammas, for me, is about holding space—for growth, for change, for gratitude. And when it coincides with a birthday, it feels like the universe gives us a little nod that we’re doing something right.
