#WitchyWednesday: The Pagan Roots of Yule in Modern Christmas

As the nights grow longer and the air turns icy, we welcome the festive season—a time to brighten the dark days with warmth, joy, and community spirit. For those of us who embrace Pagan traditions, Yule is the perfect reminder of how ancient customs still shape modern celebrations of Christmas.

Today I want to discuss the Yule festival and how I celebrate Yule even though I still call it Christmas. I may not celebrate the Christian festival, but Christmas is important to me and my children as we spend time together making memories.

The Pagan Roots of Yule in Modern Christmas

Yule, the Winter Solstice festival, honours the rebirth of the sun and the return of longer days. Ancient Pagans celebrated by decorating evergreen trees—symbols of life enduring through winter—with candles, fruits, and offerings. Sound familiar? Today, we call it the Christmas tree, adorned with sparkling lights and ornaments, bringing magic into our homes.

For me, Christmas is more than presents and feasting. It’s a time to gather with loved ones, share warmth, and reflect on the year gone by. The act of lighting candles or stringing fairy lights echoes the Yule fire, kindled to chase away darkness and welcome hope for brighter days.

Our Celebrations have Evolved

Our celebrations have evolved, blending Christian and Pagan traditions. From decking halls with holly and ivy to exchanging gifts and feasting, these rituals connect us to our ancestors. Yet, the heart of it remains the same: creating joy, fostering togetherness, and holding space for rest before the renewal of spring.

This year, as I decorate my Yule tree and sip spiced mulled wine, I’ll remember the deeper meaning behind these traditions. Yule reminds us to cherish the light within, no matter how dark it gets outside. We have experienced many challenges this year within our family unit, and there will be more to come as we move into 2025 and beyond. But we have also enjoyed family adventures, visiting places we have not seen before. We will reflect on memories and our plans as we sit before the fire and admire our Christmas tree.
