How to Be with People

I have said before that we are human beings, not human doings. The trouble is, I don’t always practice what I preach. And this is an area where I am most certainly stumbling. I noticed the issue when I spent time with family members during recent weeks. I have been running around to meet with parents and in-laws, but not for social visits. There was always a reason, or a job that needed doing. It might have been that I was doing a reiki treatment for my mother-in-law. Or I was advising my mum during her house move. Or I was helping my dad to clear out my grandparents’ house.

These were all jobs, although you might say that they were not exactly difficult or stressful. Well, clearing my grandparents house is proving tough, but we expected that. It is nice to revisit old memories, however. My point is, that when I do meet up with family members, it is nearly always for a specific purpose, usually a job that needs doing. It has been a long time since we simply sat together in each other’s company. Well, ok, Christmas wasn’t that long ago, but it feels like it. What with our crazy house viewing schedule at the moment, the ongoing saga of bringing my father-in-law back from hospital care, and a dozen other nuances, we might be able to relax by summer… I hope!
